Why porcelain countertops and extra-large slabs are wonderful design elements

2023-09-18T08:01:00

(BPT) – Today’s homeowners want to use materials in their homes that fit their busy lifestyles. Porcelain countertops and extra-large slabs meet this need perfectly as they are beautiful, durable, very low-maintenance and affordable. Porcelain slabs can be used on many surfaces, including countertops, floors, walls, fireplaces, vanities, backsplashes, shower walls, tub surrounds and even exterior flooring and cladding. They bring the stunning on-trend colors and patterns of marble, slate and other natural stones, as well as modern concrete looks, to a space while still standing up to real-life activity.

Daltile, America’s leading porcelain tile and countertop provider, knows how porcelain slabs can transform a home from fine to fab. Check out its eight reasons you should consider using porcelain slabs in your next home design venture.

1. Luxury at an attainable price

Porcelain slabs are a great solution for designs that require a high-end look on a budget. They easily bring the scale and style of natural stone slabs to projects where real stone, like marble, might be cost- or installation-prohibitive. Thanks to modern technology, the industry’s top manufacturers can create realistic designs that make it hard to tell the difference between porcelain slabs and the natural materials they emulate.

2 Stops bacteria in its tracks

In today’s “germ-aware” world, you’ll want a surface that is durable and easily cleanable. Porcelain slabs are up to the task. Not only are they easy to clean, but they’re also resistant to the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew. Regular, basic cleaning with water and mild soap is all you need. Also, if you use professional cleaning services, you can rest at ease knowing your porcelain will not be damaged.

3. Easy to install

A porcelain countertop can be installed right over your existing countertop. No demolition needed!

4. Powerful design impact

One of the hottest trends in interior design is using seamless, continuous design to create style and luxury. This design trend is easy to achieve with extra-large porcelain slabs. They add powerful design impact whether you use it for a single installation, a floor-to-wall-to-countertop continuum or even book-matched for a stunning feature wall.

5. Perfect for kitchen islands

A kitchen island is a useful and eye-catching feature in any kitchen. Porcelain slabs create beautiful kitchen islands with minimal or no seams. A porcelain slab island can also withstand the wear and tear of busy family life and frequent entertaining. For example, Daltile’s Panoramic Porcelain Surfaces line is heat resistant, so you can set hot pans and pots on its surface. It’s also water- and stain-resistant, so your porcelain kitchen island will look good for years to come.

6. Ideal for a master bathroom oasis

Master bathrooms act as an oasis in a chaotic, kid-friendly home or as an escape from today’s stressful, fast-paced world. That’s why many new home constructions and renovations focus on turning master bedrooms into personal retreats. Opt for porcelain slabs to create a seamless design with wrap-around luxury in your bedroom.

7. Solid base for super shower

The “Super Shower” has also become a must for many homeowners. This luxurious shower features various amenities like rain showers, multiple showerheads and digital water temperature controls. Here again, porcelain slabs offer a seamless design that flows across several surfaces (floors to walls to countertops), creating luxury and elegance.

8. Fitting for exterior spaces

Porcelain slabs aren’t limited to interior designs. They’re also an excellent material for outdoor spaces for relaxing and entertaining, including outdoor bars, kitchens and beautiful sitting areas. With porcelain, you can enjoy the same high level of sophisticated indoor design style but in the great outdoors.

A guide to the great outdoors: Must-have gear for first-time campers

2023-09-18T02:01:00

(BPT) – Camping for the first time can be an exciting adventure! Spending time outdoors provides a much-needed break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. You can get away from the city and recharge while enjoying the beauty of nature.

However, you’ll need the right gear to ensure you have a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Whether heading into the wilderness or staying at a campsite, here are five must-have items every first-time camper should have.

1. Shelter

Think of your shelter as your home away from home in the great outdoors. First, you’ll need a durable, weather-resistant tent big enough to accommodate you and your camping buddies. Make sure to practice setting up the tent at home before your trip to avoid any mishaps that can delay setting up camp.

Also, consider purchasing a pop-up canopy to provide shade and protection from rain over a picnic table while you cook, eat or play games. In a pinch, you can use a rope to string a tarp between two trees to create cover.

2. Lighting

When the sun sets, you’ll need a reliable light source to continue to share stories late into the night with your camping companions or illuminate your tent as you wind down. That’s why it’s important to pack lighting gear like headlamps, lanterns and flashlights.

Choose products like ELECOM NESTOUT Outdoor Gear rugged, compact and lightweight dimmable lanterns and flashlights. Inspired by traditional camping equipment, the Lamp-1 lantern is designed for harsh environments and is water- and dust-resistant. The soft, diffused, warm light is perfect for getting cozy and provides wide light coverage, so you feel like you’re gathered around a small fire.

While a lantern provides 360 degrees of illumination, you’ll also need a flashlight like the dimmable NESTOUT Flash-1 for focused light in one area. By using the included mini tripod to set it up on the ground or hanging it from your rope or tent, you can create visibility to and from your tent or campsite at night. The lights are custom accessories that attach to the NESTOUT Outdoor Battery power bank to provide portable light sources wherever you go.

3. Power

Disconnecting from the digital world is often one of the best parts of the camping experience. However, you’ll still want access to a power source to recharge your headlamps, lanterns, flashlights, cameras and cellphone. Add a battery power bank or solar charger to your packing list so you aren’t caught in the wilderness with no way to charge your electronics.

A battery power bank like the heavy-duty, waterproof, shock-proof NESTOUT Outdoor Battery offers fast-charging PD via USB-C. The stylish power pack looks like an old-school water bottle but contains lithium-ion batteries that deliver up to 20 watts to rapidly charge most electronics.

You can also opt for a portable solar charger, perfect for hiking or backpacking. NESTOUT Solar-1 foldable solar chargers are lightweight and use high-quality SunPower Maxeon cells with conversion efficiency of up to 24%. The dual USB-A ports offer wide device compatibility and allow you to charge two devices simultaneously. The attached digital ammeter allows you to monitor the amount of solar energy being collected and transferred to your devices. The solar panels have a built-in pouch for storing cables and small items and adjustable stands to find the perfect angle to maximize sun exposure.

4. Bug deterrents

Ward off unwanted guests by packing bug deterrents to keep mosquitoes, flies and other insects off you and away from your campsite. Insect repellents like citronella candles, bug-proof clothing and bug spray allow you to enjoy the outdoors without bites and stings. You can also use mesh screens or netting on your tent or canopy so you can eat, cook and relax in peace.

5. Cooking items

Cooking outdoors isn’t too different from cooking at home, but you will need the right gear. For cooking, invest in a sturdy camping stove, cookware set, and lightweight and compact utensils for easy transport.

While you can cook over a fire, you’ll need a camping stove if it’s raining or you can’t light a fire during wildfire season. You’ll also need durable pans, pots and a kettle to cook over a stove or fire. Remember to buy nonstick cookware for easy cooking and cleanup. In addition to stainless steel or plastic plates, you’ll want utensils like spoons, forks, knives, ladles and spatulas.

As you continue to go camping, you may need to add or replace gear to suit your camping preferences and specific trip needs. However, with these essential items, you’re sure to have a fantastic first camping experience. Happy camping!

4 ways to embrace the modern industrial design trend on a budget

2023-09-16T05:01:00

(BPT) – If you like exposed brick, neutral colors, metal accents, glass and concrete, you’re probably a big fan of modern industrial design. By starting with a few details, it’s easier than you think to integrate this on-trend aesthetic into your home décor — without breaking the bank.

Try these ideas for incorporating industrial elements into your home.

Have a light bulb moment

Whether you use Edison-style light bulbs as string lights or swap out some of your regular bulbs, the exposed filaments of these bulbs instantly transport you to the early industrial age. Today’s Edison-style LED bulbs come in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit a wide range of fixtures.

Enter the neutral zone

A coat of paint easily transforms any room’s appearance. For the industrial aesthetic, choose a monochromatic look using white, black, gray or brown, then add a few accents like light fixtures, art or vases that use metal, brick, glass or wood.

Put the pedal to the metal

Switching out drawer and cabinet hardware with mixed metals is another quick and easy way to emphasize the industrial feel. Opt for matte black and brushed metals to create visual interest.

Set it in concrete

Creating a concrete countertop is a simple project to undertake — and easy on the wallet. Concrete countertops are also not just for kitchens anymore. You can create a concrete countertop for a bathroom, living room, outdoor kitchen, entryway — if you can imagine it, you can make it.

Concrete is very versatile, so you can create a one-of-a-kind statement piece as a simple weekend project. All you’ll need is Quikrete® Concrete Countertop Mix and a base. You could build your own base like this iron bar table, or repurpose something you already own or find at a thrift store. Because concrete is endlessly customizable, Quikrete Concrete Countertop Mix can transform an entry table, patio island or coffee table into a signature masterpiece. Whatever you build will be extremely durable and practical — while also enhancing your modern industrial look.

Here are basic instructions for creating a concrete countertop for your home:

Safety first: Before beginning any concrete project, make sure you have proper safety gear like eye protection and waterproof gloves.

1. Determine the dimensions of the countertop. If it will serve as a bar, make sure it extends at least 6 inches beyond the base to allow room for stools.

2. Build the countertop forms. Design and construct the forms in multiple sections to allow for the weight of the concrete. For example, if you’re creating a concrete countertop for an entry table, build forms from 3/4″ melamine-coated particle board by screwing four 1.5″ strips to a base sheet according to the countertop dimensions. Another advantage of smaller sections is that if they’re less than 4′ rebar is not required.

3. Apply a bead of silicone caulk in the seams of the forms. Then smooth with a caulk tool or your fingertip to give the countertop a smooth edge.

4. Mix the Quikrete Concrete Countertop Mix by following the directions on the bag. Then pour into the forms in two 1″ layers. If necessary, place metal rebar or wire mesh between the two layers for additional strength.

5. Overfill the forms slightly before pulling a 2×4 in a sawing motion over the surface several times in each direction. This process, known as screeding, will level what will be the underside of the countertop.

6. Consolidate the mix and remove air voids by tapping the forms with a rubber mallet or vibrating with an orbital sander without the pad.

7. Remove the forms after 18 hours. Once each countertop section is removed from the forms, smooth the edges with fine sandpaper.
Note: Although you have to wait a few days before the countertop fully forms with many concrete mixes, Quikrete’s Concrete Countertop Mix doesn’t have to sit for more than a day.

8. With the help of another person, place the newly formed countertop pieces on top of the base. If your countertop project requires any hardware or appliance installation, make sure you follow the manufacturer instructions.

9. Seal your concrete countertops with Quikrete Acrylic Concrete Cure & Seal to protect them from stain-causing contaminants like dirt, oil and grease.

Pro tip: To customize your concrete countertop, add liquid cement colors during the mixing process and stain the surface. You can also fill air holes with Polyblend Non-Sanded Grout from Custom Building Products.

Tips to make home modifications for independence

2023-09-15T12:13:00

(BPT) – Being safe and comfortable at home is a large part of living well. Home modifications and repairs can help everyone prevent accidents and maintain an independent lifestyle, especially older adults and people with disabilities.

Many older adults prefer to live in their own homes for as long as possible, but too often don’t think about whether a home can adapt to their needs as they age. Making improvements before they are needed is a good way to ensure that a home is ready for aging in place. Forward-thinking improvements can also prevent falls, which often result in the need for long-term care.

Changes can be made to improve both the accessibility and adaptability of a home. Accessibility improvements involve tasks like widening doorways and lowering countertop heights for someone who uses a wheelchair. Adaptability changes, such as adding grab bars in bathrooms, are improvements to assist people for whom strength and balance may have become a challenge. These changes can usually be made without a major redesign or full-blown renovation.

You can get started making your home ready for long-term living by conducting a top-to-bottom assessment.

Home assessment

Before making any changes, look at the entire home. Keep in mind items that may be needed now as well as in the future. This checklist can help identify areas that might need improvement. Everyone has different needs, but in general, a “no” answer may be cause for action.

  • Are exterior walkways and entrances well-lit?
  • Is there a step-free entrance to the home?
  • Are entrance doors easy to lock, unlock, open and close?
  • Does the main floor include a kitchen, bedroom and full bathroom?
  • Are doorways wide enough for someone using a wheelchair, walker or service animal?
  • Is wall-to-wall carpeting secure and in good condition (flat, not bunched up)?
  • Are area rugs secured to the floor with non-slip padding?
  • Are walkways free from obstructions and hazards like cords and furniture?
  • Do stairways have sturdy handrails on both sides?
  • Can bathroom and kitchen cabinets be easily reached?
  • Is there a step-free shower entrance?
  • Are grab bars available near the shower and toilet?
  • Do bathtubs and showers have non-slip mats, adhesive strips or slip-free floors?
  • Will smoke detectors provide visual as well as audio alerts?
  • Are telephones easily accessible on all floors?

6 key steps for planning a kitchen remodel

2023-09-15T09:01:00

(BPT) – Designing your dream kitchen is an exciting endeavor, but it requires careful planning and consideration. Follow these six essential steps to ensure you create a kitchen that perfectly fits your lifestyle and needs.

  1. Assess your lifestyle: Consider how you use your kitchen. Are you an avid cook? Is it a family gathering space? Do you often host large groups? Understanding your lifestyle will help guide your design choices.
  2. Evaluate your existing kitchen: Take a close look at your current kitchen. Identify what you love and what needs improvement. Think about storage, prep surfaces, and any changes you want to make.
  3. Set your budget: Determine a realistic budget for your project. Prioritize your needs over wants, but leave room for upgrades and extra touches that catch your eye.
  4. Select the right professional: Trust the expertise of a professional who communicates well and understands your vision. A skilled designer can bring your ideas to life and guide you through the process.
  5. Plan smartly: Measure your kitchen’s size and consider infrastructure concerns like electrical and plumbing. Focus on workflow and customize storage solutions to fit your family’s daily living.
  6. Avoid common mistakes: Stay away from overloading with cabinets, ensure sufficient counter space, and invest in quality materials for critical areas like cabinets and countertops.

Remember to be patient throughout the process and manage your expectations. Renovating can be stressful, but the end result will be worth it. Take your time and make thoughtful decisions, even if it means leaving some décor choices for later.

Finishing touches for your dream kitchen

To truly transform your kitchen, pay attention to these key finishing touches:

  • Lighting: Mix different types of lighting for various purposes. Use ambient lighting for mood, task lighting for meal preparation, and decorative lighting for the island and dining table.
  • Barstools: Select comfortable and stylish barstools, ensuring enough space between them for easy movement.
  • Hardware: Choose cabinet and drawer knobs and pulls that match your kitchen’s style and size.
  • Sinks/faucets: Consider modern features like pull-down spray nozzles, touchless or tap technology, and semi-professional functionality for added convenience.
  • Essentials: Install under-cabinet lighting for countertop work areas, backsplashes for the sink and range, and sufficient electrical outlets, including USB ports for family tech.

By following these steps and incorporating these finishing touches, you’ll create a kitchen that not only looks stunning but also functions perfectly for your lifestyle. The Power of Self-Advocacy in Pompe Disease

2023-09-14T23:01:00

(BPT) – When Amy was trying to get back in shape after giving birth to her second child, she noticed lower back pain and core weakness she was struggling to re-strengthen. After numerous attempts at physical therapy and consulting with numerous doctors, she finally met with a neurologist and received a diagnosis of Late-Onset Pompe Disease (LOPD), a rare, genetic disorder which causes progressive weakness and can affect the major muscle groups used for breathing and mobility.

Amy’s self-advocacy and motivation to understand what was happening to her body has helped her to keep moving forward day by day, while living with a rare disease, with the help and support of her family, friends and care team. In fact, living with a rare disease may not be as rare as you would think – affecting one in 10 Americans, there are more than 7,000 known rare diseases in the U.S.

Here are some tips to ensure you too are proactively prioritizing your health, listening to your body and getting checked out by a doctor if you are experiencing symptoms such as shortness of breath, trouble eating or chewing or difficultly walking.

  • Listen to Your Body: As someone who exercised regularly, Amy immediately took notice of her fatigue and difficulties when exercising. Speaking with physicians from multiple disciplines, eventually including a neurologist, helped lead her toward a Pompe diagnosis.
  • Communicate Your Needs: While at work as a physician’s assistant, a job that often requires being on your feet for many hours, Amy takes breaks when needed, and remains mindful of how she is feeling throughout the day. These adjustments in her schedule have helped Amy to continue working and be there for her own patients. Similar to Amy, it is important to let others know when you need help and support if you are experiencing a challenging moment.
  • Work With Your Doctor to Monitor Your Progress: Two months after her Pompe diagnosis, Amy began an enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) regimen every two weeks and visited her doctor every six months to monitor progress. In between those appointments, Amy paid close attention to her body to inform her doctor on any changes, helping ensure she maintained the muscle function she had for as long as possible. Taking note of any new symptoms also helped her make the most of her conversations with her doctor, and as a result, better-informed care decisions.
  • Understand Your Options: When diagnosed with a rare disease, knowledge is power. Making the effort to familiarize oneself with rare diseases, symptoms and resources could be key to a diagnosis and proper treatment. Even though Amy was stable on the treatment she was using, she stayed up-to-date on scientific innovations. A year after beginning her initial ERT, Amy learned about NEXVIAZYME (avalglucosidase alfa-ngpt), a monotherapy for LOPD given every two weeks. After talking it through with her doctor, she decided to change her treatment. By keeping an open dialogue with her physician and advocating for herself, Amy was able to take the best next step for her to manage her LOPD.

Like Amy and her journey, remaining persistent and curious is a critical part of one’s journey. “I hope my story helps other people. At the end of the day, everybody has something they’re dealing with. But we will get through it, if we use each other for support,” said Amy, who is being treated with NEXVIAZYME for her LOPD.

For those living with Pompe disease, it is essential to continuously speak to your healthcare provider about ways to support the management of the disease. Being informed of Pompe disease, its signs and symptoms and potential treatment options are all key to helping advocate for yourself or a loved one. If you are currently living with LOPD and on an enzyme replacement therapy, but your symptoms are worsening or you are unable to do the things you want to do, talk to your doctor to see if NEXVIAZYME could be a treatment option for your late-onset Pompe disease management.

Patient stories reflect the real-life experiences of persons diagnosed with LOPD who have been prescribed NEXVIAZYME. However, individual experiences may vary. Patient stories are not necessarily representative of what another person using NEXVIAZYME may experience.

This patient was compensated for their time in creating this content.

INDICATION

NEXVIAZYME (avalglucosidase alfa-ngpt) is used for the treatment of patients 1 year of age and older with late-onset Pompe disease [lysosomal acid alpha-glucosidase (GAA) deficiency].

A simple guide to living a more plant-based lifestyle

2023-09-14T10:27:00

(BPT) – Whether you’re seeking a better approach to your diet, a more environmentally conscious lifestyle or both, you’re in good company. Last year’s plant-based food market in the U.S. totaled $8 billion, up 7% from 2021 — and interest in plant-forward eating is not slowing down. Whatever your reasons for wanting to make this change, you probably have questions. Do you want to go vegan, or just vegetarian? Can you add a few more plant-based foods to your day and reap the benefits?

“A diet centered around fruits, vegetables and other plant-based foods can deliver nutrients your body uses for energy while avoiding many of the drawbacks associated with eating meat,” said Dr. Luigi Gratton, M.D., M.P.H. and vice president of Training for Herbalife. “Eating whole fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and grains is beneficial because they contain a plethora of nutrients that support healthy function across all bodily systems.”

Although any effort to incorporate more plant-based foods into your routine offers benefits, it may be difficult to do all at once. To make lasting change, experts recommend taking one step at a time. New ways of shopping, cooking and eating take getting used to — as does adjusting to new flavors and textures.

What is a plant-based lifestyle?

“Plant-based” means you primarily eat food derived from plants. This is similar to the term “plant-forward,” emphasizing whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, seeds and nuts — but not limiting you to those foods. Versions of plant-based diets include:

Vegetarian: You abstain from eating animal products including meat, poultry or fish. Vegetarians consider it acceptable to eat animal by-products, such as milk and eggs, if the animals are kept in adequate conditions.

Vegan: In the strictest version of the plant-based approach, you eliminate any food of animal origin. In addition to avoiding meat and seafood, vegans also avoid dairy products, eggs and honey. Vegan foods never contain byproducts of animal agriculture like lard, whey or gelatin.

Flexitarian: An alternative to vegetarian, flexitarians focus on fruits, veggies, whole grains, legumes and nuts, but occasionally include meat, poultry, fish or eggs. When incorporating meat, flexitarians choose organic, free-range, pasture-raised or grass-fed beef, chicken or turkey. This is a great option if you’re just starting to experiment with a plant-based lifestyle.

How do you know you’re getting enough nutrients?

One question for anyone considering going vegetarian or vegan is whether they’ll get enough protein and other nutrients for optimal health. Beyond seeking plant-based forms of protein like beans and legumes, nuts and seeds, iron-rich tofu and spinach, and whole grains like quinoa, you can add supplements to support your well-being with plant-based certified products like those from the Herbalife V Line.

“While following a plant-based lifestyle can be a very healthy way of eating, it may be tough to meet all your goals. For example, vegans seek good options to increase or meet their protein goals, including supplementation,” said Gratton. “Plant-based certified products like the shakes in the Herbalife V line can help you hit your macro target while taking out the guesswork of plant-based living.”

The product line offers four plant-based certified products to help simplify plant-based nutrition:

Plant-based Protein Shakes: Available in classic and chocolate flavors, their 20 grams of protein (pea, pumpkin seeds and chia) satisfies hunger, reduces food cravings, maintains lean muscle tone, sustains energy and promotes healthy skin. The shakes are also a source of non-heme iron.
Greens Booster: Formulated with special blends derived from organic fruits, vegetables, superfood powders and green tea, this is an easy way to add more fruit and vegetable ingredients to your daily routine.
Immune Support: Contains vitamins C, D and zinc to help balance and support daily immune health.*
Digestive Support: Oat and guar fibers support a healthy gut, digestion and regularity.*

Herbalife V products are backed by science and rigorously tested for quality. All products are certified USDA Organic, non-GMO-verified, Kosher, as well as Plant-based and Vegan by FoodChain ID. They’re formulated with no soy or dairy, with no artificial sweeteners or flavors. Herbalife V is available in the U.S. and Puerto Rico exclusively through Herbalife independent distributors. Learn more at Herbalife.com/herbalifev.

Ready to get started? Begin adding one plant-based meal per day, then slowly increase to three a day over the course of a month or two. Before you know it, you’ll be following a plant-forward lifestyle. Making one small change at a time can help improve your daily diet and overall wellness.

From idea to reality: How AWS’ new program aims to kickstart your startup journey

2023-09-14T10:03:00

(BPT) – Founding a startup is a thrilling and ambitious undertaking full of excitement and buoyed by the promise of innovation. However, when embarking on the entrepreneurial journey, startup founders face many barriers and challenges in getting their ideas off the ground.

While many of today’s accelerator programs provide new startups with valuable mentorship and funding opportunities, most require them to have a minimum viable product (MVP) from the get-go in order to qualify. This requirement has left a gap in the market, leaving many would-be innovators in the early part of their startup journey adrift without support or guidance.

Building the next wave of innovation

To fill this gap, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched Build, a new global program designed to support entrepreneurs early on in their journey to build, refine and launch innovative cloud-based applications. AWS will select up to 500 startup founders worldwide to participate in its 10-week virtual program, where they will receive both technical and leadership guidance, as well as learn how to best leverage the flexibility and scalability of AWS’ tech stack to launch their MVP.

AWS has been a partner to some of the greatest startups today — from Uber to Airbnb — and it understands that success takes more than just a great idea, it also requires the right tools, expert advice and supportive partners. Over the past 15 years, AWS has helped more startups launch, build and succeed than any other cloud provider. By launching AWS Build, the company hopes to help elevate startups solving today’s complex problems with new, innovative solutions.

“AWS Build was designed to support founders at the earliest stages of their startup journey, helping them turn their ideas into innovative products,” said Howard Wright, Vice President and Global Head of Startups at AWS. “Our goal is to help usher in a new generation of startups that are leveraging the power of the AWS cloud in new ways, and to help them get their fundamentals right, so they can be ready to scale.”

Created to support your dream

AWS Build is designed to teach startup founders the fundamentals so they can build their MVP right at the very beginning. Over 10 weeks, participants will learn technical fundamentals to incorporate the most advanced cloud technologies into their applications.

Participants will also understand how to make strategic decisions related to product development, monetization of their idea, where to find and when to use beta customers, and other relevant themes to successfully launch their products.

There are many benefits to joining the program. Its fully-online and largely self-paced curriculum includes weekly live virtual engagements, such as technical office hours with AWS solutions architecture experts, business-led “Ask Me Anything” sessions with investors and industry leaders and peer-to-peer networking events. Best of all, selected startups will receive up to $2,000 in AWS credits to help them build their products and services in the cloud.

After the program concludes, founders will join the AWS Build community to collaborate with peers and technical experts as they scale their products. Also, applicants may be eligible to apply to other credit packages up to $100,000 as they continue their cloud journey, as well as benefit from partner offerings through AWS Activate.

Get ready to build

If you have an innovative idea and need insights, technical guidance and community to grow your startup, consider applying for AWS Build. Applications for the program will be accepted until Sept. 22, 2023. Startups can apply and find more details about Build at AWS.Amazon.com/Startups/Accelerators/Build.

1. Don’t overthink your outfits. Keep the color palette simple, but cohesive. Mix textures and don’t be afraid to throw in a pattern.

2. Make sure your kids’ shoes are comfy so everyone is happy!

3. Don’t plan on outfit changes, but bring a backup for each child — just in case.

4. For locations, look for natural light, symmetry and a variety.

5. Try to capture both in portrait mode and live mode in each location.

6. If you don’t have a photographer or a tripod, use everyday objects in your car to prop up your phone. (A sneaker works great!)

7. Always turn on live photo on your phone (except when in portrait mode) as it gives you flexibility to choose a different key photo if someone’s eyes are closed.

8. Shoot with the light from behind.

9. Use the zoom-out feature to capture wide angles and dramatic landscapes.

10. In between photos capture videos of your little ones. Be sure to get down low and up-close with them.

Bonus Tip: Bring snacks — for the adults, too!

Photo-Worthy Spots

The Pumpkin Patch There’s no shortage of these around town, and not only do they provide the perfect afternoon activity of browsing for the perfect pumpkin, but you can also take your pumpkins home to carve them closer to Halloween. Make sure to dress your little ones in festive attire, like this 2-Piece Toddler Set or this sweet Baby’s First Halloween set, both on sale for up to 40% off, so you can snap adorable pics of them sitting by the pumpkins.

Apple Picking Nothing says, “It’s fall!” like apple picking. And it’s easy to make a full day of fun out of this activity. Find a family-friendly orchard near your home, pack a picnic to enjoy after your apple picking, and you’re all set to go! Don’t forget to dress the fam in coordinating outfits! *See tips above.* These sweet styles from Carter’s would be perfect for your little boy and girl:

Hayride A hayride is perfect for young children, and fun for parents, too! Spend some time walking around (there’s likely to be a corn maze to check out!) before your ride, and be sure to book your ride during golden hour, that perfect time snapping photos right before the sun sets, for the best photos. Don’t forget to score incredible deals on your little one’s favorite denim up to 50% off.

Pro Tip: Keep your video camera running to capture the entire ride through your child’s eyes. There are guaranteed to be moments you’ll never want to forget.

Baby Classic OshKosh Overalls

Baby Knit-Like Denim Hickory Stripe Overalls

Baby Heart Print Denim Overalls

Baby Pull-On Knit Denim Pants

Whether you’re looking for an organized activity like the ones above, or just heading out to check out the fall foliage, never leave home without your camera. (It doesn’t have to be fancy!) Keep in mind where the “best” photo spot is while you’re out and about. Is there a cute sign at the pumpkin patch? Or a place to sit your little on a patch of pumpkins? Maybe it’s a decorated haystack at the corn maze. Keep your eyes peeled and don’t be afraid to take pictures in multiple locations — trust us, you’re going to treasure these for years to come!

IPO 101: What to Know About Investing In An IPO

2023-09-13T14:07:00

(BPT) – With the boom in retail trading over the last few years, one area may be new to a lot of investors: investing in an Initial Public Offering (IPO). IPOs have been fairly scarce the last several years and traditionally have not been available for everyday investors, so many may not know what is involved in investing in them.

Here are things every investor should know about investing in IPOs:

What is an IPO?

An IPO, or initial public offering, refers to privately owned companies selling shares of the business to the general public for the first time. Companies choose to do this for a mix of reasons, including to boost a company’s profile, bring prestige to the management team, and raise cash that can be used for expanding the business.

Once a company has completed their IPO, their company will trade company shares on a stock exchange for any investor to invest in, and the stock price will be subject to market forces driving it up or down.

Deciding if an IPO Investment Is Right For You

If you have the option to invest in an IPO, you should do so only after having conducted your own due diligence and considering whether or not this fits in your investment strategy. The SEC states that “being well informed is critical in deciding whether to invest. Therefore, it is important to review the prospectus and ask questions when researching an IPO.”

SoFi, for instance, offers robust educational resources available to any investors to better understand different investment vehicles, including IPO investing, and how you can best determine your personal investment strategy.

Understanding IPO Investing vs. Buying Shares on Listing Day

The IPO price is the price at which shares of a company are set before they are sold on a stock exchange. As soon as markets open and the stock is actively traded, that price begins to go up or down depending on consumer demand, which is known as the opening price.

Investing in an IPO means you are buying in at the IPO price versus buying the opening price or any other price the day or days after the stock debuts on a stock exchange.

Indication of Interest & Share Allocation

If you are interested in IPO investing, you will have to go through a few steps before being able to buy into the pre-listing price. When a company is preparing their IPO, there will be an indication of interest period for investors where you will request the number of shares you would like to buy. An indication of interest is similar to making a reservation – you are holding your place in line and will be contacted by the brokerage firm you invest with to confirm your intent once the deal is live and firm orders can be received.

Oftentimes there is a lot of pent-up interest to invest in private companies, so usually you may receive fewer shares than you originally requested, and depending on that level of interest, the IPO price per share could go up or down.

Either way, once your allocation has been made, your brokerage firm will communicate how many shares you will receive and what the final price per share will be to ensure you’d still like to purchase the shares you requested before executing any trades.

Where to Invest in IPOs

Traditionally, IPOs have been primarily for institutional investors and high-net worth individuals, but increasingly companies are considering everyday investors a part of their IPO strategy and setting aside shares to be allocated to these traders.

SoFi Invest¹ offers IPO trading² to those with SoFi Active Invest accounts, and there are no account minimums required to participate plus no commissions or fees on IPO trades. As a SoFi Invest member, you simply need to view your Invest account, look to see what IPOs are available and answer a few questions to see if this investment is right for you. From there, you only need to indicate how many shares you’re interested in and keep an eye out for updates and alerts on your share allocation.
