When Graves’ disease affects your eyes: Why early action matters

2025-06-30T06:01:01

(BPT) – Did you know that up to 40% of people with Graves’ disease may also develop Thyroid Eye Disease (TED)? Although related, TED and Graves’ disease are different conditions that require different treatments. Failing to recognize and treat TED can lead to serious eye complications — including double vision, eye bulging (proptosis), chronic pain and even vision impairment.

TED can progress rapidly, and without timely intervention, inflammation (redness and swelling) and scar tissue can form around the eyes causing damage. The longer TED goes untreated, the more likely serious damage can occur.

Because TED can progress independently of thyroid hormone levels, managing Graves’ disease alone may not be enough to prevent or treat eye symptoms. That’s why it’s essential for people living with Graves’ disease to stay alert to any eye changes, seek care from a TED Specialist at the first sign of symptoms, and advocate for a proper diagnosis and care. TED Specialists are often select ophthalmologists and endocrinologists, as well as oculoplastic surgeons and neuro-ophthalmologists, with experience treating TED.

Signs and Symptoms of TED

Some common signs and symptoms of TED are:

  • Bulging eyes
  • Double vision
  • Dry, gritty eyes
  • Red, swollen eyes and eyelids
  • Watery, teary eyes
  • Eye pain and eye pressure
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Retracted eyelids (your eyelids can’t close properly)

The Impact of TED

TED can impact people beyond physical symptoms. Changes in appearance — such as eye bulging — can affect a person’s emotional well-being. Christine Gustafson, who lives with TED and is the CEO of the TED Community Organization, shared, “Even if it was only just the physical appearance, it was enough to really disrupt my life.” She described how strangers would stare and people would whisper in public, leaving her feeling alienated. “You make a choice — either you go on with your life or you withdraw. And many people withdraw,” she said, but finding support from others in the autoimmune community and understanding how to self-advocate can make a difference.

The Importance of Self-Advocacy

The road to a TED diagnosis is not always straightforward. Many people spend months — or even years — seeking answers as they navigate a range of eye symptoms often confused with allergies, dry eye or even aging, leading to delays in receiving the appropriate diagnosis and care.

LaQuilla Harris, who lives with Graves’ disease and TED, met with four doctors before finding a team that understood her needs. Now, LaQuilla advocates for others to understand their risk. “I have struggled to manage my TED symptoms because they were undetected for so long. That’s why I want to ensure that others living with a thyroid condition such as Graves’ disease understand their risk and get the proper care they need.”

Tips to Be “TEDucated”

If you or a loved one lives with Graves’ disease, knowledge about TED is power.

  1. Know the signs and symptoms – Symptoms like eye bulging, double vision, grittiness or redness may be early indicators of TED. Be sure to observe and track your symptoms often and if you notice any changes, let your doctor know right away.
  2. Understand the connection – Graves’ disease and TED are related but separate autoimmune conditions. Even if your thyroid levels are stable, TED can progress independently, so it’s important to monitor your eye health continuously.
  3. Find the right care team – Unlike other eye doctors, TED Specialists have the right experience to provide the right care. TED Specialists are often select ophthalmologists, endocrinologists, oculoplastic surgeons and neuro-ophthalmologists with experience treating TED. It is important to work with a TED Specialist early on so you can build the best treatment plan for your eyes and avoid further damage to them.
  4. Advocate for yourself – If you’ve been diagnosed with Graves’ disease and notice any eye symptoms, ask your provider directly about TED and request a referral to a TED Specialist.
  5. Build your community – Getting TEDucated also means connecting with the wider autoimmune community for support and resources. If you have TED and/or a thyroid condition, like Graves’ disease, you aren’t alone. Educate your friends and family about your conditions and seek support groups online or in your community.

Beta cells 101: Explaining the role of beta cells in type 1 diabetes with Professor Beta T1D

2025-06-30T07:01:01

(BPT) – Sponsored by Sanofi

It’s an unfortunate reality that myths and misconceptions about type 1 diabetes (T1D) are widespread today, leading to significant awareness gaps that ultimately make it harder for people to understand their own risk of developing the disease. Consider this: While many believe that T1D is a juvenile disease, it can impact anyone at any age. Others think it begins only when symptoms appear, when in fact, the disease progresses gradually in stages over time.

These misconceptions extend to a root cause of the disease. T1D is not simply caused by a lack of insulin; it’s a result of the autoimmune response in which the body mistakenly attacks its own healthy beta cells. The destruction of beta cells is central to the development of Stage 3 T1D, which is why understanding beta-cell function is foundational to understanding the progression of T1D. Below, explore why beta cells are such a critical piece of the T1D progression puzzle.

The role of beta cells

Located in the pancreas, beta cells are responsible for insulin production, insulin storage, and the regulated release of insulin. Beta cells work to create glucose homeostasis (i.e., keeping blood glucose levels within a healthy range) and precisely respond to changes in the body’s metabolic status due to food intake and other factors. In T1D, an autoimmune-mediated response – likely initiated by a complex interplay of genetic susceptibility and environmental triggers – targets and destroys these insulin-producing beta cells.

Ongoing, underlying beta-cell destruction is a critical marker of progressive autoimmune T1D. This progression is what defines the stages of T1D. Beta cell destruction can begin as early as four to six years before clinical symptoms appear. In Stage 2 T1D, more damaged beta cells release autoantigens which causes T1D autoantibodies to develop in the blood in response to the autoimmune attack. T1D screening through a blood test can detect these autoantibodies early, potentially identifying T1D in its early stages – before symptoms even emerge.

As we continue to learn more about the unique role of beta cells in T1D, education around beta-cell function becomes critical. That’s where “Professor Beta T1D” comes in.

Meet Professor Beta T1D

To help demystify the science behind T1D and build a better understanding of beta-cell function, Sanofi created Professor Beta T1D – an animated, educational digital avatar dedicated to making beta-cell science more accessible and digestible. Professor Beta T1D’s goal is to highlight the unique impact of beta cells in T1D.

Professor Beta T1D is bringing his expertise to HCPs through social channels like X, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Professor Beta T1D is a healthy beta cell living his best life, seeking to keep calm and carry on in the face of T1D.

multi professor betas grouped together.

As an ambassador for the clusters of other beta cells, Professor Beta T1D is highly knowledgeable, but also frustrated, fighting to be heard before it’s too late. As a strong believer that there’s a “beta way to look at T1D,” there are two things Professor Beta T1D wants others to know about beta-cell function:

  1. Beta-cell function determines disease progression and an individual’s T1D journey. As measured by C-peptide, beta-cell function can indicate patients’ level of remaining beta-cell activity and help determine the extent of autoimmune T1D progression.
  2. Beta cells define clinical outcomes, because some functional beta cells are better than none! It has been observed that in T1D even low beta cell function can produce adequate endogenous insulin to maintain glycemic control.

Insights into how beta cells influence T1D are key to understanding disease progression and may help inform the development of novel disease management approaches. Learn more about beta-cell function on www.betawayt1d.com.

32% of Americans are swapping BBQ for pizza this July 4th

2025-06-30T09:01:01

(BPT) – ‘Za summer? More than 2 in 5 Gen Zers and Millennials (43%; 32% overall) are skipping traditional barbecues in favor of ordering pizza on Fourth of July — driven by the rising costs of hosting summer celebrations, according to new Empower research.

Key takeaways:

  • Independence and inflation: 68% of Americans say barbecues are noticeably more expensive to host this year, due to inflation (49%) and rising grocery costs (56%); 55% say tariffs will make holiday celebrations more expensive.
  • Stars, stripes and spending: Nearly 4 in 10 (38%) say they’ll spend more this year than last on Fourth of July festivities.
  • Shopping list red, white and blues: Close to half (49%) have noticed a change in the cost for the ingredients to host a barbecue.
  • Fourth and friends: To help cut back on expenses, 43% have asked their Fourth of July guests to bring something to the celebration, like food and drinks (49% Gen Zers, 52% of Millennials).
  • Party pass: 34% plan to skip Fourth of July celebrations altogether to save money.
  • In pursuit of happiness: Still, 65% are focused on enjoying the moment, and 58% plan to shop Fourth of July sales to stretch their dollar further.

Sizzling costs are cooling cookouts

Nearly 7 in 10 Americans (68%) say the cost of hosting cookouts and barbecues has noticeably increased this year, and half have felt the squeeze at the grocery store when buying ingredients for the grill (49%). More than 4 in 10 say they’ve delayed buying a new grill to save money (43%).

Inflation and rising grocery costs are top of mind, as 49% of Americans admit their summer celebration plans — including Fourth of July — have been directly impacted. And for 34%, the best way to save is to skip the party altogether.

Stars, stripes and spending

Some Americans are ready to celebrate big this Independence Day: nearly 4 in 10 (38%) say they’ll spend more this year than last on Fourth of July festivities — and it’s not just on fireworks. Biggest spending categories include:

  • 62% say food and drinks / groceries or takeout
  • 28% say fireworks or entertainment
  • 25% say hosting or attending a party
  • 20% say travel or gas
  • 14% say patriotic clothing and accessories

Celebrate smarter, not harder

Nearly two-thirds (65%) are focused on enjoying the moment, even if it means cutting back elsewhere. Though almost half (47%) aren’t worried about the costs of celebrating, 65% say they are prioritizing saving money.

Savvy strategies in play:

  • 43% are asking guests to pitch in by bringing food or drinks, rising to over half of Gen Z (49%) and Millennials (52%).
  • 58% are taking advantage of Fourth of July sales or promotions (64% of Millennials) to save money; in fact, 37% say they wait for deal days to make big-ticket buys like mattresses or appliances (49% Millennials vs 22% Boomers).
  • 19% are sticking close to home to avoid travel costs.
  • 15% are co-hosting celebrations to split expenses.

Debt, deals and decision fatigue

The balancing act between celebration and budgeting is real: More than 1 in 5 (22%) are even willing to go into debt to enjoy a full-blown holiday bash — rising to 36% among Millennials.

Most Americans (68%) are working to strike the right balance between having fun and staying frugal: 55% say they typically set a budget for holiday celebrations. Overall, close to 4 in 10 are skipping most celebrations this year due to cost (39%).

*ABOUT THE STUDY

Empower’s “July 4th Spending” study is based on online survey responses from 2,200 Americans ages 18+ fielded by a third-party panel provider from June 21 – 23, 2025. The survey is weighted to be nationally representative of U.S. adults.

5 ways to prioritize self-care during the busy summer months

2025-06-30T07:53:00

(BPT) – Summer brings fun in the sun and is often accompanied by packed schedules filled with travel, family gatherings and long days outdoors, making it easy to let wellness habits slip.

However, prioritizing self-care can make a big difference in how you feel and function so you can fully enjoy everything on your sunshine-filled schedule all season long. To help you out, Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner offers the following pro tips.

1. Refresh your space

When life feels chaotic, a cluttered space can make it worse. But you don’t have to overhaul everything. Start small! Pick one spot each week to tidy, like your car, work bag or fridge.

As part of the refresh, Blatner suggests adding something small to your daily spaces that sparks joy. It could be color, music or a meaningful item that reminds you to take care of yourself, even during the busiest days.

2. Unplug

It can be easy to mindlessly scroll on your phone or other devices. You don’t have to give up your electronics, but setting digital boundaries can help reduce your screen time. Schedule time in your day for screen-free outdoor time to reduce stress and soak up mood-boosting vitamin D.

3. Eat what makes you feel good

Focus on eating foods that taste good and make you feel nourished and happy. Blatner recommends keeping a feel-good fridge zone with pre-chopped veggies, hard-boiled eggs for grab-and-go protein, antioxidant-packed snacks like seasonal berries and infused water jars with herbs and citrus.

4. Make movement fun

Does the thought of hitting the gym or going on a run fill you with dread? Don’t force yourself to do an exercise you don’t enjoy. Instead of traditional workouts, embrace playful movement outdoors like paddleboarding, bike riding, beach volleyball or even dance classes to keep fitness fun and consistent.

5. Make a sweet, protein-packed snack

Satisfy your sweet tooth with a homemade treat made from high-quality ingredients like Blatner’s recipe for Protein Cookie Bites. They’re a deliciously crave-worthy yet nourishing snack to tackle those sweet cravings throughout your day.

These protein bites are made with Eggland’s Best eggs, so you can savor every bite knowing that these eggs contain 10 times more Vitamin E compared to ordinary eggs. This powerful antioxidant helps protect cells from oxidative stress, which is especially helpful during the hotter months when sun exposure increases.

EB eggs also have six times more Vitamin D compared to ordinary eggs, which supports bone health, immune function and mood regulation.

How to make an exciting grown-up lunch using healthy lunch box ideas

2025-06-27T13:37:00

(BPT) – By Kourtney Johnson, RD

If you’re like most people, you’re always open to new, healthy and quick lunch ideas for work. You might be looking for a more exciting, grown-up option than the same old PB and J every day, but you’re not sure which healthy lunch box ideas for adults are also easy to make and nutritious.

While there’s nothing wrong with a PB and J, it’s understandable if you don’t want to eat that every day. Continue reading to find out how to quickly pack a nutrient-dense, balanced meal using easy lunch box ideas!

What your lunch should include

While fruits and veggies are good for you, consuming a balanced meal goes beyond eating the rainbow.

It might be helpful to think of your lunch box as a plate. Using the MyPlate method, half should be filled with fruits and veggies, a fourth should have a protein source and the other quarter should have a carb-containing food. There are many choices you can add to each section of your plate.

Carb-containing options

Carbs are an important nutrient because they provide your body with the source of energy it prefers: glucose. Foods that contain carbs include Food For Life’s Sprouted Whole Grain bread, English muffins like the Sprouted Grain Flax variety and tortillas like these Sprouted Whole Grain ones. Fruit, starchy vegetables — potatoes, peas, corn and squash — milk, yogurt and dessert items also have carbs.

Complex vs. simple carbs

Carbohydrates come in different forms. Simple ones — also called simple sugars — have a different structure than complex carbs and are digested quickly. Complex carbs contain more nutrients such as fiber and take longer to digest. As a result, complex carbs keep you full for a longer amount of time and prevent blood sugar swings.

Sources of simple carbs include candy and baked goods. While they provide less nutrition than complex ones, you can still enjoy them in small amounts.

Complex carbs are found in foods like potatoes, apples, chickpeas, brown rice and whole grain bread products like those from Food For Life!

Varity of fruits, vegetables, protein and carbs

Protein-packed options

Foods that contain protein provide us with lasting energy, general good health and the ability to create new cells. You can find this nutrient in options like meat, fish, eggs, black beans, nut butters and legumes such as chickpeas.

Don’t forget about fiber

Plant-based foods like nuts, seeds, whole grains, fruits and vegetables provide you with fiber, which has many health benefits. It helps you feel more full for a longer period of time while adding bulk to your diet to improve digestion. Healthy lunch box ideas for adults include Food For Life’s Ezekiel Sprouted Whole Grain Bread, Ezekiel Sprouted Whole Grain English Muffins and Ezekiel Whole Grain Pocket Bread which all provide fiber.

Why it’s a good idea to pack your own lunch

Bringing your own lunch to work has a number of health benefits, but it doesn’t mean you need to do so every single day. Aiming to pack your lunch most days of the week is a good goal and allows you to:

  • Decrease your salt intake (Food For Life offers low-sodium options like this bread)
  • Eat reasonable portion sizes
  • Consume healthy fats (found in foods like nuts, seeds and olive oil)
  • Avoid excessive amounts of added sugars

In the long run, your body will thank you for eating food from home.

Healthy lunch box ideas for adults

The options for what to add to your midday meal are endless, but we’ve compiled a list of easy lunch box ideas you can enjoy using various Food For Life products.

Try the following sandwiches on Ezekiel Flax Sprouted Whole Grain Bread:

Healthy and quick lunch ideas for work don’t necessarily need to be on regular bread! Pocket Bread, English Muffins and tortillas also make a great base.

These easy lunch box ideas would pair well with:

  • Fresh fruit
  • Raw or cooked veggies
  • Cottage cheese
  • Popcorn
  • Yogurt
  • Baked chips
  • A sweet treat, such as dark chocolate or dates with peanut butter

Tips for saving time on packing your lunch

Life gets busy, and nobody wants to spend too much time preparing lunch for the next day. Keep these tips in mind so you can avoid spending a lot of time in the kitchen.

Plan ahead by cutting and washing your fruits and vegetables all at once. Keep them in small containers so you can grab and go throughout the week. Similarly, choose quick recipe ideas that can be made in 15 minutes or less.

Bringing leftovers is also a quick option, as all you need to do is put them in a container and add it to your lunch box the next morning.

Have fun with it

Food is a source of joy, and it’s important to find healthy and quick lunch box ideas for work that you actually like. At the same time, consuming a variety of nutrients is important, and following the MyPlate method as a guide will make it easier to do so.

Consider trying different recipes using Food For Life’s various products, and add different sides and sweet treats to your meal to keep lunch exciting.

How sprouted grains benefit gut health

2025-06-27T13:49:00

(BPT) – By Kourtney Johnson, RD

If you’re constantly looking for ways to improve your health, you’re in good company. With summer at our doorsteps and allergies and colds all around, you might be concerned about getting sick, or maybe you’re focused on preventing chronic conditions such as diabetes or heart disease.

We’ve heard for a long time that exercising regularly, getting adequate sleep and eating a variety of healthy foods make a big difference in preventing illness, but it goes a bit deeper than that. It turns out that bacteria in the gut is the foundation of health.

Gut health has been a hot topic in recent years, and for good reason. Many studies have been done to better understand the role of intestinal microbiota — which is made up of over one thousand microbial species — on health and disease in humans.

A change in the microbiota influences organ-related diseases, though the mechanism between the gut and organs still isn’t completely understood.

The variety of microbes in the gut is impacted by environmental factors, lifestyle, age and the foods you eat, with diet being one of the biggest influences.

Learn more about how the foods you eat, including sprouted grains, can help you have better gut health so you can stay healthy this summer and beyond!

How sprouted grains benefit gut health

Sprouted grains contain the bran, germ and endosperm. They’re recognized as whole grains so long as the sprout isn’t longer than the kernel and nutrients haven’t been removed, according to the Cereals and Grains Association.

Grains are sprouted by soaking them in water until they start growing a sprout. The water temperature, air temperature and the amount of time grains are allowed to sprout are all controlled. Once sprouting occurs, they’re drained and mixed together before being ground up. During the sprouting process, enzymes are released, and they break down protein and carbohydrates. This is why sprouted grains have increased digestibility.

One of the most important components of sprouted grains is the fiber, because it isn’t digested and can increase the variety of bacteria in the gut.

Research shows that people who follow the Mediterranean Diet — which is high in fiber from foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds — have an increased number of bacterial species (biodiversity) in their guts compared to people who follow a Western diet, which is significantly lower in fiber.

A table with various proteins, vegetables and fruits laid out.

You can easily increase your fiber intake by adding Food For Life bread, English muffins, cereal and tortillas to your eating pattern. We offer a variety of Ezekiel 4:9 sprouted grains products, including Cinnamon Raisin Whole Grain Bread, Flax Sprouted Whole Grain Cereal and Sprouted Whole Grain Bread.

Increased digestibility of sprouted grains

While the digestibility of sprouted grains is impacted by enzymes, phytate (AKA phytic acid) also plays a role. In grains, phytate is located in the bran with the majority of the phosphorus found in any one food bound to it. Iron and zinc absorption is impaired in the presence of phytate, which can increase your risk of being deficient in these minerals.

The sprouting process breaks down antinutrients like phytate while the amount of vitamins, antioxidants and fiber is higher, leading to better digestibility. This is just one of the benefits Food For Life products provide over other whole grains on the market.

Benefits of prebiotics on gut health

Sprouted grains, fruits and vegetables contain prebiotics, which benefit the gut microbiota by triggering the growth of healthy bacteria. They can also change the environment of the gut by making it less acidic, which alters the composition of the microbiota.

The impact of a healthy gut on your overall health

The gut microbiota ferments dietary fiber, which creates short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). These SCFAs regulate immune cell function by helping to train the immune system to tell the difference between good and bad microorganisms.

Having a variety of bacteria in your gut is associated with better health. For example, conditions like diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease and celiac disease have been seen in people with low diversity in gut bacteria.

Having a higher amount of different types of bacteria is thought to better protect against environmental influences since it increases the chance of your gut being able to compensate for certain bacteria that aren’t present.

Foods to eat to improve your gut microbiota

In addition to sprouted grains, there are many foods that promote a healthy gut.

To consume probiotics, which benefit gut health, you might consider adding yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut or kefir to your eating pattern.

A selection of spices, toppings, cream and cheeses

For prebiotics, garlic, onions, bananas and asparagus are good options.

Consider trying the following recipes, some of which would pair well with Food For Life products.

Where to find Food For Life’s sprouted grain products

Taking action to improve your gut health doesn’t need to be complicated. Adding fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains is an easy step to take while also increasing your chances of staying healthy.

If you’d like to add Food For Life’s products to your eating pattern so you can benefit from the improved digestibility of sprouted grains, use the store locator to find out where they’re available near you.

Quiz: How Much Do You Know About Whole Home Air?

2025-06-25T17:01:00

(BPT) – Choosing energy-efficient heating and cooling equipment, scheduling regular maintenance appointments and changing the furnace filter can all help contribute to a more comfortable and energy-efficient home. However, properly serviced equipment is not the only factor that contributes to a home’s comfort and energy efficiency. Going beyond the equipment to consider a “whole home” approach to caring for indoor air may help optimize a home’s energy efficiency and indoor comfort.

How much do you know about the non-equipment factors that can affect indoor air? The following quiz can help homeowners identify potential issues that can reduce energy efficiency and thermal comfort.

1. An HVAC technician should check the attic when making a service call or performing regular maintenance on heating and cooling equipment.

True. Issues in the attic — such as an insufficient level of attic insulation or problems with attic ductwork — can lead to inconsistent temperatures, reduced energy efficiency and other problems throughout the home. The EPA estimates that homeowners can save an average of up to 15% on heating and cooling costs (or an average of 11% on total energy costs) by air sealing their homes and adding insulation in attics, floors over crawl spaces and accessible basement rim joists1. An Owens Corning AirCare® Professional brings a “whole home” approach to caring for a home’s air. These professionals use the HVAC System Health Check, which includes 11 checkpoints to evaluate the home’s comfort system.

2. My home is only 15 years old and was built to code, so I don’t need to worry about energy efficiency.

False. Residential building codes in the U.S. are typically updated every three years but may vary by jurisdiction. It’s important to understand that building codes represent the minimum threshold for energy efficiency. Advances in building technology and equipment innovations continue to make homes more efficient compared to those built only a decade or so ago.

3. Insulation is already installed in my attic, so I’m covered.

False. A sufficient level of attic insulation is necessary to help regulate temperatures and avoid heat escaping from a home’s interior through the attic to the outdoors. Similarly, in the summer, attic insulation keeps hot attic air from migrating into cooler parts of the home. Recommendations for insulation levels vary by climate zone. An HVAC technician should check attic insulation levels when performing a maintenance visit or service call and can recommend a proper level.

4. Condensation in the attic is always a sign of a leaky roof.

False. Any moisture accumulating in the attic should be investigated. The presence of moisture may lead to problems ranging from corrosion on metal infrastructure or mold on equipment. And while it is important to ensure a home’s roof is not permitting moisture to enter, humidity in attic air may also lead to moisture issues. Attic insulation helps provide thermal comfort within a home by slowing thermal transmission through the ceiling as part of an insulating system. Be sure to seal the ceiling prior to insulating to prevent thermal loss by way of air movement.

5. A noticeable increase in dust inside a home may be a sign of ductwork issues.

True. Over time, connections in attic ductwork can loosen, allowing particulates in attic air to enter the ducts and be distributed throughout the home. Unusual smells or odors are another sign that attic air may be infiltrating the home.

6. Equipment that cycles on frequently is always a sign of an equipment issue.

False. Holes or penetrations in attic ductwork can allow heated or cooled air to escape into the attic, placing additional strain on properly operating equipment. Additional wear and tear may shorten the lifespan of a heating and cooling system.

Caring for a home’s indoor air should go beyond the equipment and consider how conditions in other parts of the home, including the attic, contribute to comfort and energy efficiency. An Owens Corning AirCare® Professional has the knowledge and tools to assess conditions in the attic — including insulation and ductwork — and bring a whole home approach to caring for indoor air. 5 hosting hacks to make summer entertaining effortless

2025-06-25T11:01:00

(BPT) – Whether you’re planning a big summer barbecue or just having friends over for burgers and a bonfire, summer entertaining should feel fun — not frantic. What’s the secret to keeping entertaining easier? Smart hosting is all about preparation. From savvy setups and quick clean-ups to thoughtful details guests will notice in between, a little planning goes a long way in creating a celebration that feels effortless — and totally memorable.

1. Set the mood

Choosing a fun theme for your party can instantly set the tone for a festive summer party — and it doesn’t have to be complicated! Keep it summery and easy. Whether you choose to go with tropical vibes, a garden party or an old-fashioned outdoor barbeque, all you need are a few on-theme decorations and a playlist to set the mood. You can also build your theme around a bold color like pink, using it in balloons, flowers or a pink lemonade stand to tie everything together in a fun and playful way.

2. Prep the food

Keep your party prep, serving and cleanup simple by creating a build-your-own bar with all the fixings for whatever you’re dishing out. You could set up a salad or taco bar, or a burger and sub sandwich station so guests can serve themselves and customize their meal. Just make sure to leave plenty of space on the table between the different fixings to avoid traffic jams!

3. Personalize it

Supply on-theme stickers or colorful food-safe markers at the flatware table with instructions for guests to label or decorate their dishes, cups and even cutlery to suit their personalities — helping everyone keep track of their cup and plate. This also makes cleanup a breeze, as you’re less likely to end up with abandoned plates and cups lying around everywhere.

4. Streamline cleanup

Set out clearly labeled containers for trash and recycling so guests can easily dispose of items. When it comes to stress-free hosting, Hefty has your back, with a range of sizes — including their new standout tall kitchen pink Ultra Strong with Fabuloso Watermelon Scent bags. With trusted strength, odor control and a playful pop of pink color, Hefty trash bags help you stay ready behind the scenes while keeping your space looking (and smelling) party ready.

Use the vibrant pink colored bags to help guests identify the correct containers by supplying a matching pink “Trash” sign to go with the new Hefty bags, and a green or blue “Recycling” sign for the recycling bin, so it’s clear where empty soda cans and bottles should go. Large yard? Set up two trash and recycling stations at opposite sides so guests can easily find them.

5. Leave everyone smiling

Gather a few fun on-theme party favors or treats in small bags for guests to take home with them as a souvenir of the occasion. Make them even more memorable by including something personal, like an instant photo you took when they arrived, or a handwritten note thanking them for their presence. A little thoughtful touch goes a long way!

Check out Hefty’s new fresh and fruity Fabuloso Watermelon scent in bold pink for a fun, stylish way to bring personality to everything from everyday cleaning needs to summer gatherings. The Hefty Ultra Strong with Fabuloso Watermelon Scent line is available in-store and online at major retailers nationwide.
