Four benefits of bringing healthcare home

2025-08-28T14:31:00

(BPT) – There truly is no place like home. It is our haven, filled with our favorite things. It is comfortable and familiar. It makes sense, then, that receiving healthcare at home is sometimes viewed more positively than in a clinical setting.

While some procedures and screenings still need to be conducted elsewhere, increasingly, caregivers and those who receive care are looking to tap into the benefits of at-home care. Not only is it convenient, but it can also be more personalized and cost-effective. It also helps older adults maintain independence as they can manage scheduling without needing to arrange transportation.

Fortunately, there are a growing number of ways individuals can manage their healthcare needs, whether independently or with the help of a caregiver, from the comfort of home. AARP members can take advantage of member benefits that can help them bring healthcare home and even save money while doing so.

Stay healthy at home

Focusing on preventive care is a great step toward avoiding urgent off-site appointments with a physician. Regular visits with a primary care provider can help monitor for any issues and even help prevent future ailments.

Oak Street Health provides personalized care for older adults on Medicare, designed to help you stay healthy and independent. AARP members and non-members get same-day/next-day appointments where available, a dedicated care team, and a 24/7 patient support line. Oak Street Health has over 240 primary care doctor offices across 27 states.

Improve balance from your basement

Physical therapy can be an important part of recovery, overcoming an ongoing ailment or simply improving balance, flexibility or strength. For many older adults, scheduling physical therapy sessions might require coordinating with a family member or caregiver, especially if they are unable to drive.

Fortunately, AARP members and non-members alike can take advantage of physical therapy without leaving home through AARP® Physical Therapy At Home™ by Luna. Not only is it simple and convenient, but by receiving therapy in a personal setting, you’re more likely to continue doing the exercises on your own. It can feel easier to mirror your therapist’s instructions when the surroundings are the same, and you’re likely to feel more comfortable doing so than if the setting were to change. Most insurances and Medicare are accepted by Luna and a prescription may not be needed to start.

Confidently enjoy self-care

Some tools help make caring for yourself at home even easier. If you are on a complex medication regimen, tools like Hero Smart Pill Dispenser, which stores, sorts and dispenses up to a 90-day supply of 10 different medications, can keep you on track. The connected medication management app helps you manage medication routines, track your supply and understand your adherence. AARP members get exclusive savings on a Hero subscription.

Lifeline medical alert systems also allow you to be at home independently, without fear of what to do in an emergency. Lifeline systems connect you to a trained care specialist with just the press of a button. Members save 15% on medical alert service and get free shipping and activation. You can select the service option that fits your lifestyle and get fast, 24/7/365 access to help when you need it.

Look ahead to long-term care

For some, the ability to stay at home even when additional care becomes necessary is especially important. Long-term care coverage can help do just that, providing access to services that can help you meet medical and non-medical care needs if you are unable to manage them yourself. Reviewing information on long-term care options can help you prepare for the future with customized solutions to help protect your assets and lifestyle.

While every healthcare journey is different, the growing number of in-home options provides even greater flexibility in how to provide and receive care. To learn more about these and other ways to manage health at home, visit aarp.org/benefits.

How to select the right tankless electric water heater for any home

2025-08-29T12:03:00

(BPT) – Tankless electric water heaters are transforming the way households experience hot water by offering energy-efficient, space-saving solutions that deliver heated water on demand. These compact units can be up to 98% smaller than traditional storage water heaters. They may be installed in tight spaces or even mounted to a wall, freeing up valuable space while reducing energy consumption.

Selecting the right model requires preparation and research. Homeowners should consider key elements of their home’s design, including the number of occupants, bathrooms and hot water appliances — paired with overall water usage — to ensure the correct tankless electric water heater is installed.

Tip 1: Estimate household hot water demand

A critical first step is properly estimating the household’s hot water demand. A tankless electric water heater’s flow rate, measured in gallons per minute (GPM), determines its size. Calculating how many hot water GPMs the household typically uses is essential and is done by adding up the flow rates of fixtures, such as faucets and showers, that run at the same time.

After determining the GPM required to meet all the household’s simultaneous needs, the homeowner can choose the right size tankless electric water heater. For example, if someone uses the shower while two faucets are running, the home will need a tankless electric water heater with at least a 5 GPM capacity.

See infographic for an overview of product usage, sizing and geographic zones.

An infographic that is called

Another important consideration is the number of bathrooms and typical usage patterns of occupants. Larger families or homes with multiple bathrooms may require a higher-capacity unit, whereas smaller households can often rely on a more compact solution. For example, the Rheem RTEX and EcoSmart models under the Rheem® family of brands cater to a wide range of needs, from point-of-use (POU) units for single fixtures, to whole-home options designed to handle multiple fixtures concurrently.

Tip 2: Factor in regional climate

Groundwater temperatures vary across the country. In northern regions of the U.S., which tend to be colder, the ground water is also colder. This means that a higher temperature rise (difference between the ground water temperature and the desired output water temperature) is required compared to warmer southern areas.

For example, in southern areas where the groundwater temperature is 62° F, to reach a desired output water temperature of 105° F, the temperature rise would be 43° F. Whereas, in northern regions, if the groundwater temperature is 40° F to reach 105° F, the temperature rise is much higher at 65° F. The unit has to work harder to achieve this temperature.

For this reason, certain models will work well in southern climates, but a similar household in a northern region may need a larger tankless electric water heater to achieve the degree rise needed to meet household hot water requirements.

Tip 3: Account for water temperature and flow rate

Water temperature and flow rate are equally crucial when determining the appropriate tankless electric water heater size. Higher flow rates demand more powerful models to maintain consistent hot water output. Some residences may be accommodated by one whole-home unit, while others may require multiple point-of-use systems.

Tip 4: Evaluate electrical capacity

The home’s electrical capacity is another essential consideration when selecting a tankless electric water heater. For most homes, the average available amp service is either 100-, 200-, or 300-amps. While a 200-amp service panel typically suffices for average households, new construction, larger homes and high-demand systems may require a higher 300-amp service panel. Additionally, older homes with lower amp service may require an electric panel upgrade to meet the needs of a tankless electric water heater.

Higher-capacity tankless electric water heaters require more power, so be sure to assess the capability of the home’s electric service panel to accommodate additional circuit breakers before installation. Consult a licensed electrician or contractor to evaluate the home, circuit breaker size and wiring gauge to ensure the service panel can handle the load, prevent overloads and ensure a safe, efficient operation.

There are many benefits to tankless electric water heaters, including the ease of installation. Tankless electric models simplify installation by eliminating the need for venting, but sizing is key. If the unit is undersized, it may not fully meet demand during simultaneous water use. An oversized unit can lead to unnecessary energy consumption and higher utility costs.

Follow these tips and use a manufacturer’s guide, such as Rheem’s online sizing resource, to confidently select a tankless electric water heater model, then work with a professional to guarantee a safe and efficient installation for endless hot water and energy-efficient operation.

Top reasons why most Americans avoid getting their check-ups

2025-08-29T06:01:00

(BPT) – Did you know 90% of Americans put off check-ups or recommended screenings that could help identify and treat serious illness early? Aflac’s 2025 Wellness Matters Survey reveals what’s making Americans hesitate to get wellness exams — and who avoids them most.

Surprisingly, among Americans under 60, women were most likely to admit skipping their common recommended screenings: Gen Z women (68% versus 55% of Gen Z men); millennial women (63% versus 61% millennial men) and Gen X women (63% versus 54% Gen X men).

If you or a loved one are delaying taking care of your health, you’re not alone — but your inaction could result in increased costs, worse health outcomes, or even a shorter lifespan. The good news is, you can take steps today to help safeguard your health.

Barriers to care

The Wellness Matters Survey found an alarming 94% of Americans face barriers to getting recommended screenings. Across all generations, Americans delay health care because going to the doctor isn’t always easy — logistically or emotionally. Many people avoid appointments for practical reasons including cost, time and transportation, but emotional factors like fear of bad news or embarrassment also create obstacles:

  • Nearly half of Americans (48%) face logistical barriers including conflicts with work hours and challenges taking time off for appointments.
  • Nearly 40% have canceled or not scheduled a doctor’s appointment because the wait time was too long.
  • Americans have avoided these common screenings:
    • pap smear (33%)
    • prostate exam (32%)
    • colonoscopy (32%)
    • mammogram (31%)
    • blood test (31%)
    • full-body skin cancer exam (27%)
    • STD screening (22%)

Notably, millennials are most likely to avoid these overall screenings (62%), closely followed by Gen Z (61%):

  • Gen Z reports experiencing feelings of personal embarrassment and distrust or dislike of doctors (32%).
  • Embarrassment and fear of bad news prevents nearly 1 in 4 young women, particularly Gen Z, from getting on-time screenings.

Advantages of check-ups and screenings

Annual checkups with a primary care physician offer several benefits. They give your provider a baseline so changes can help identify health issues early, when they’re much more treatable. Wellness exams also offer opportunities to ask questions and alleviate concerns, which can be reassuring. Information from trained, experienced health care providers is more reliable and accurate than what you may find online about your concerns.

Waiting until you have a health crisis, then relying on urgent care or the emergency room, is also more costly than preventive care and timely management of health conditions. Many Americans (41%) — including Gen Z (51%) and millennials (54%) — primarily use urgent care or the emergency room for medical needs. Men (46%), African Americans (47%), Asian Americans (45%) and Hispanics (44%) are most likely to seek medical attention from urgent care or the emergency room.

Timely health screenings can ensure signs of illness — including cancer — are detected as early as possible, before you need to seek urgent care. Recent medical advances offer more effective treatments for a variety of cancers and other diseases, but they’re more successful when started as soon as possible. Finding and treating cancer and other diseases early is your best bet for improved health outcomes, and could actually save your life.

Tips to manage health screenings

If you’re unsure what screenings you need, or haven’t seen a doctor in years, contact your health insurer to learn what doctors or clinics near you are covered by your plan, and what screenings are covered.

  • Choose a primary care physician. Through your insurance network, find a practitioner located near you.
  • Learn about screenings recommended for your age, gender and family health history. Start at CDC.gov for basic information.
  • Keep a regular schedule by planning check-ups around your birthday, so you don’t forget.
  • Maximize appointments by writing down questions you have before going.
  • Plan ahead by adding recommended screening timelines to your calendar.

You can also encourage friends and loved ones to take care of their health by offering gentle reminders, expressing your concern for their well-being. In the Wellness Matters Survey, 73% said they feel the positive benefits of a thoughtful nudge about getting preventive care, with 83% of African Americans, 79% of Hispanics, 78% of Gen Z and 77% of millennials expressing thankfulness or a sense of relief that a friend or loved one urged them to go to the doctor.

Don’t wait for a health scare

Overall, the survey showed Americans know they should take a moment to schedule preventive care screenings or wellness visits, even though they delay it. For 65% of Americans, experiencing a health scare is what made them realize they need to be more proactive about their health. Unfortunately, many of those who believe they’ll be diagnosed with cancer are more likely to delay screenings (62% versus 42%).

Coverage matters

Understandably, employees consider benefits packages to be vital for their physical, financial and mental well-being during a time of increased worry about health care costs. In fact, the 2024-2025 Aflac WorkForces Report found a growing number of employees would consider leaving their jobs for better benefits, even with a pay cut. Supplemental insurance benefits are an important part of a comprehensive benefits package, with most employees seeing an increasing need for supplemental insurance to help mitigate fear of unexpected medical events, helping to anchor financial stability and increase peace of mind.

The future of flavor: Better-for-you beverages that don’t compromise

2025-08-28T08:01:00

(BPT) – When you reach for a beverage, what drives your decision? Is it health benefits, taste or both? If you’re like many consumers, a drink that only quenches your thirst or satisfies your sweet tooth isn’t enough. That’s why functional beverages and drinks that deliver great taste are on the rise.

Drinks that help your body function

While the name may not be familiar, you’ve probably seen or even tried functional beverages. These drinks offer health benefits like improved hydration, digestion and nutrition with functional ingredients like vitamins, minerals and probiotics. For example, PLEZi Nutrition, the public benefit company founded by former first lady Michelle Obama, focuses on creating beverages with vitamin C, fiber and potassium to provide nutrients your body needs but may not otherwise get enough of.

Consumer demand for functional drinks continues to grow. According to Zion Market Research, the functional beverage market was valued at $175.5 billion in 2022 and is predicted to grow at a compound annual rate of 8.6% through 2030, eventually reaching $339.6 billion.

One group that is leading the functional beverage trend is sports drinks. According to Innova Market Insights, sports drinks account for about two-thirds of functional beverage launches in the U.S. These sports drinks are designed to support performance, muscle recovery and electrolyte balance.

That said, sports drinks can have a lot of sugar, specifically added sugar. Added sugars are those added during food and drink processing, and do not include naturally occurring sugars found in milk, fruits and vegetables. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), consuming too many added sugars can contribute to obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and other health problems.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends limiting calories from added sugars to less than 10% of total calories per day. So, if you consume 2,000 per day, you should aim to eat or drink less than 200 calories or 50 grams of added sugars per day.

This presents a problem, though: According to the same dietary guidelines, a 12-ounce serving of a sports drink has 97 calories or 20 grams of added sugar, representing over 40% of the recommended daily added sugars intake.

Many consumers are realizing the negative impacts of too many added sugars and want beverages that help them reduce their average intake. As a result, many companies are now creating functional sports drinks without as much added sugar.

Smiling girl sitting on a couch holding 5 cans of PLEZi close to her.

This past year, PLEZi Nutrition launched PLEZi Hydration, which has no added sugar* and half the sugar of the leading sports drink.* Co-created with four-time NBA Champion, Stephen Curry, and culinary entrepreneur, Ayesha Curry, the sports drink stands out among the competition because it also offers nutritional ingredients — twice the electrolytes and seven times the potassium compared to leading regular sports drinks,** and vitamin C for immune health and muscle repair.

It’s not surprising that the Currys have partnered with PLEZi. Many of the couple’s endeavors, including their work through their Eat.Learn.Play Foundation, centers on supporting underserved communities through access to healthy foods, movement and sport. PLEZi’s own nutritional standards are overseen by their Kitchen Cabinet, the company’s board of advisors in key areas like nutrition and public health.

This is just one example of how beverage brands are not only listening to consumers’ desire to reduce sugar intake but are also moving toward better-for-you and functional ingredients.

A taste that doesn’t compromise

Even with better nutritional value, functional beverages are nothing without flavor — and consumers agree.

According to a beverage flavor trends report from Innova, the demand for innovative beverage flavors is on the rise, with consumers increasingly favoring exciting and functional drinks that deliver on taste without compromising health goals.

More specifically, consumers want a taste rooted in nature. Another Innova report found that a quarter of consumers are prioritizing natural flavors made from real ingredients. This finding marks a shift toward cleaner formulations that reduce sugar while preserving sweetness, meeting demand for natural and familiar sweet solutions.

Creating a beverage that tastes good and is good for you sounds like a tall order, but it is possible. This is where brands like PLEZi can fill the gap. With no artificial colors, dyes or sweeteners and less sugar**, the company’s Hydration drink — as well as its healthier soda alternative PLEZi FiZZ*** — delivers bold flavors to meet consumers’ tastes while also delivering on wellness demands.

The future of function and flavor is one and the same. As consumers demand drinks that work as hard as they do, beverage companies have a prime opportunity to not only meet but exceed expectations with creativity and health in mind.

Feeding Preemies Better: How Advances in NICU Nutrition Have Been Helping Babies Thrive

2025-08-28T08:05:00

(BPT) – If your baby is born prematurely, you’re suddenly navigating a world of specialized care, unfamiliar terms, and important decisions. But there’s good news. One of the most significant advances in preemie care over the past 19 years is how these babies are fed — and it’s making a measurable difference in their health outcomes.

For premature babies born weighing less than 2.75 pounds, nutrition plays a critical role in their growth and development. These preterm newborns need more calories and protein than breastmilk alone can provide. That’s why hospitals add something called a “fortifier” to breastmilk to provide the extra nutrition needed to support healthy growth.

What many parents don’t realize is that not all fortifiers are the same.

Not All Fortifiers Are Truly Breastmilk-Based

In the U.S., every product labeled “human milk fortifier” is made from cow milk — except one. A company called Prolacta Bioscience offers the only fortifier made from 100% breastmilk, free from cow milk.

This difference matters. Fortifiers made from 100% breastmilk are designed specifically for premature babies and are being used in NICUs across the country to support better outcomes, fewer complications, and shorter hospital stays.

When used as part of an exclusive breastmilk diet, these fortifiers and formulas are:

What Parents Can Do

If your baby is born weighing less than 2.75 pounds and is in the NICU, be a strong advocate for your baby’s care. Here are a few ways to stay informed and involved:

  • Understand that early nutrition choices can affect your baby’s immediate and long-term growth and development
  • Tell your NICU care team you only want your baby to receive 100% breastmilk, including Prolacta’s fortifiers made from 100% breastmilk, not cow milk products (be aware that most products labeled “human milk fortifier” are actually made from cow milk)
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions or request more information

Every Drop Counts

Premature babies need extra nutritional support to grow. Parents who understand their options are better equipped to make informed choices alongside their baby’s care team.

If you have questions about NICU nutrition or want to learn more about breastmilk-based fortifiers, you can speak with a member of Prolacta’s Parent Support team at 1.888.413.9885 or visit the parent education page.

Understanding your options can help you feel more confident, more informed, and more empowered — even during one of the most challenging times in your parenting journey.

Bidet 101: Everything You Need to Know About This Modern Bathroom Upgrade

2025-08-28T08:01:00

(BPT) – Your phone can control your thermostat, your fridge sends you grocery alerts … but your toilet? Still stuck in 1995. It’s time for an upgrade — and no, it doesn’t involve knocking down any walls. Bringing your bathroom into the 21st century and adding a touch of luxury to your experience doesn’t take a $25,000 remodel — just one smart addition.

If it feels like bidets are suddenly everywhere, you’re not imagining it. While bidets are common in Europe and Asia, and they’re even legally required in most Italian homes, many Americans don’t know what a bidet looks like. But that has been changing quickly in recent years. Through online reviews and social media buzz, more people are discovering that using a stream of water instead of just toilet paper isn’t strange — it’s smart.

Whether you’re bidet-curious or still skeptical, this guide will break down the basics — what a bidet does, why it’s catching on across the U.S. and how modern bidet seats like Coway’s Bidetmega 400S and 500S are changing the way people think about personal hygiene.

What exactly is a bidet, and how does it work?

A bidet is a bathroom fixture or toilet attachment for cleansing. It sprays a stream of water for cleansing after you go to the bathroom, not unlike a water fountain. The name comes from an old French word that meant “pony,” since users of the original bidets had to straddle the device in a way that looked a bit like riding a horse.

While traditional bidets resembled low sinks that sat next to toilets, modern bidets are much more integrated and technologically advanced. Today’s electric bidet seats have come a long way from the French pony days, and they can be easily added to the toilet you already have. Now, a bidet seat attaches to your toilet and connects directly to your home’s fresh water supply through a simple T-valve, which ensures that the water it sprays is separate from that of the toilet bowl.

Why is a bidet a must-have amenity?

A bidet not only elevates your bathroom design, but it also provides physical, financial and sanitary benefits. Bidets improve health and wellness because they’re more hygienic than the alternative. Bidets can also help people with mobility issues due to aging or physical disabilities, or temporary challenges that occur postpartum or after surgery. Homeowners love that bidets prevent common plumbing problems caused by flushing lots of toilet paper or wipes.

Does using a bidet feel different from wiping with toilet paper alone?

Using a bidet is a gentle and refreshing experience that only takes a few seconds. You can still use a bit of toilet paper, though some bidets even have air dryers.

Modern electric bidet seats are specifically designed with your comfort in mind, with tech-driven features and adjustable settings that enable you to personalize your experience. Coway’s Bidetmega 400S and Bidetmega 500S, for example, feature a three-stage wash that automatically varies the angles and water pressure to remove residue, plus customizable user profiles with memory settings that remember your preferences.

Are bidets safe and hygienic?

Bidets are very safe and incredibly hygienic. The water they spray comes from the same clean source as the water you use to brush your teeth or wash your face. Keeping a bidet clean can also be very simple. Many of the latest bidets are designed with hygienic features like a self-cleaning nozzle, antimicrobial materials and coatings, and germ-killing UV lights.

Do I need to hire a pricey plumber to install a bidet?

Bidet seats are easy to install directly onto your existing toilet. Just measure your toilet to determine if it is elongated or round, then match your bidet to that shape. You only need basic tools and about 30 minutes — no plumber necessary. Upgrading your bathroom has never been simpler!

What cutting-edge features do the most technologically advanced bidets have these days?

Bidet installed on toilet

Today’s smart bidets don’t just clean you — they clean themselves, adapt to your comfort, save energy and improve safety, compared to basic or old-school models. Coway’s most advanced Bidetmega models include features that provide a more hygienic, personalized, convenient and eco-friendly user experience than the average bidet.

For those who prioritize cleanliness and hygiene:

  • The auto-cleaning nozzle and bacteria-eliminating UV light, plus WaterShield™ misting spray, prevent toilet bowl germs
  • Integrated carbon deodorizer and auto-close lid contain air particles

For those who value personalized comfort:

  • Three-stage gentle wash setting with i-wave technology allows for customized water pressure, motion and spray patterns
  • Adjustable nozzle position, seat warmth, built-in dryer, water temperature and water pressure offer unparalleled comfort
  • User profiles save your personalized settings

For those who seek practical convenience:

  • Nightlight for easy midnight bathroom visits
  • Wireless remote with docking station or wall mount for convenience
  • Tankless design instantly heats only the water you need, with no waste
  • Eco Mode reduces energy use when idle and decreases seat temperature to prevent overheating

Renew and recharge: The rise of the adult gap year

2025-08-26T08:01:00

(BPT) – Gap years are historically associated with recent high school or college graduates who seek to explore and recharge before life’s demands take over. But, who says there is a set age for this experience? If you’re craving adventure, purpose and a pause from the nine-to-five hustle, it might be time to consider taking an adult gap year — or just a month or two — to discover the benefits of tapping out. More than 80% of U.S. workers experience workplace stress and over half say it impacts their home life. With burnout on the rise, an adult time-out could make a world of difference emotionally, physically and spiritually.

“We’re seeing more people prioritize their work-life balance and nowadays, the standard week or two of vacation is no longer cutting it to return to the office truly restored,” said AARP Services Director of Travel Steve Guilday.

Whether it’s planned way in advance or a spur of the moment decision, an AARP membership can help you save throughout your open-ended journey. “No matter how long your extended leave lasts, an AARP membership offers a way to help you plan smarter and save more when taking a break from the daily grind,” said Guilday.

Max out the experience, not your credit card

Taking extended time off to combat burnout, pursue a passion, travel or all of the above, requires careful consideration of finances and your career, plus a plan on how to make the most of your time off. AARP members get exclusive deals, seasonal offers and special savings by booking through the AARP Travel Center Powered by Expedia, including a $50 gift card of your choice when you book any flight package. For a limited time, members can take advantage of 9 curated trips created specially for AARP members to experience the joy of travel with the perfect mix of city life and coastal tranquility. For those bringing a furry friend along for the ride, make it easy when you stay at thousands of pet-friendly hotels, such as La Quinta® by Wyndham and Baymont® by Wyndham. AARP members save 20% off the standard rate when booking at least seven days in advance and selecting the “Pay Now & Save, Non-Refundable” option. Or, you can save 10% off the standard rate and get flexible booking when you select the “AARP Members: Save 10%” rate.

If your plans are taking you abroad, make sure to double-check that all your travel documents are up-to-date. While you can travel up to six months before its expiration date, many countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay. If your passport needs to be renewed, even expediting it can take two to three weeks, so begin the process with enough time in advance. AARP members and their families can save 15% on expedited U.S. passport and travel visa services through RushMyPassport. This perk offers expedited options for all passport types and customer support to simplify the process of obtaining travel documents.

Plan your adventure, choose your route

A grown-up gap year not only affords the opportunity to see new places and meet new faces, but it gives you the time to do so at your own leisure and pace. Explore the scenic routes and add in a spontaneous stop or two by choosing to explore destinations through a road trip adventure. In fact, if you’re a road warrior then consider the centennial anniversary of U.S. Route 66, the Mother Road of the United States, next year and travel across eight states. With an AARP membership, save up to 35% off base rates with Avis and Budget when choosing the Pay Now option at reservation or up to 30% off when you choose to Pay Later at the pickup counter. Plus, members receive a 3% credit to apply to future rentals, a free upgrade on compact through full-size car class bookings (subject to availability) and an additional driver at no extra cost.

For additional savings while on the road, link your AARP membership with your Exxon Mobil Rewards+™ account to earn extra points on everyday purchases like fuel, car washes and convenience store items, plus 2x the points on fuel on member days. AARP members who are new to the Exxon Mobil Rewards+ program also get a 500-point welcome bonus after their first fill-up. Every 100 points equals $1 in savings redeemable on fuel, car washes or store items. Use the Exxon Mobil Rewards+™ app or your phone number and PIN at the pump once linked.

Secure yourself and your home while you explore

Even with everything planned and seemingly perfectly prepped, unexpected issues can come up back at home while you’re miles away. Don’t leave the protection of your home up to chance: AARP members can save 5% on monthly 24/7 ADT Professional Monitoring. ADT offers customizable security to fit your unique needs, and this special member offer is combinable with their other smart home security promotions. Some restrictions apply.

Accidents and injuries can happen. Most travel medical coverage will only get you to the “nearest adequate” facility. If you prefer to be treated at a hospital at home, to get you back on your feet, look into an air medical transport membership like Medjet. As an AARP member, you can save up to 20% on MedjetAssist memberships which cover medical transfers, including all transport costs, when you’re more than 150 miles from your home. Their MedjetHorizon adds worldwide crisis response benefits, including security evacuation if necessary.

Taking extended time off doesn’t mean you have to feel the pinch once you’re back home thanks to an AARP membership. To learn more about additional discounts for AARP members, visit AARP.ORG/SAVE.

New study: Americans have $500 in emergency savings

2025-08-25T09:01:00

(BPT) – The median emergency savings for Americans is $500, according to new Empower research. The size of the safety net varies by generation, with Boomers saving a median of $2,000 — five times that of Gen Z’s reserves of $400. One-third of Americans (32%) don’t have an emergency savings fund and 29% say they can’t afford an unexpected expense over $400.

Half of Americans admit they’re stressed about their current level of emergency savings (50%) and recognize the importance of a safety net. Some 75% of Americans agree emergency savings are essential for financial security and 64% say it’s a financial priority for them.

Emergency savings are top of mind — and a moving target

The majority of Americans (64%) say growing their emergency savings is a financial priority right now — even if they’re still finding their financial footing. So where do things stand?

The median emergency savings balance for Americans:

  • Overall: $500
  • Gen Z: $400
  • Millennials: $300
  • Gen X: $500
  • Boomers: $2,000

A third (30%) do not believe they could handle unexpected expenses that could arise in the year ahead. Close to 1 in 5 Americans say their savings would cover less than a month of expenses (18%).

The majority (63%) say the rising cost of living has made it harder to build or maintain emergency savings, and 35% say the economy and tariffs have caused them to increase their contributions. More than half (58%) say saving for emergencies feels “almost impossible” with how expensive everything is right now.

In the past year, many have faced unplanned financial events including:

  • Car repairs (26%)
  • Medical bills (24%)
  • Home repairs (19%)
  • Job loss or income reduction (14%)
  • Pet emergency (11%)

Nearly two-thirds (64%) of Americans say emergency savings are a financial priority for them in 2025. Some 17% contribute to their fund monthly as part of their budget, and 31% say they’ve added to their savings in the past month.

Stress meets strategy

Most take a “better safe than sorry” approach to emergency savings and want to put away as much as possible (39%), with half (52%) wishing they had started saving sooner. Close to 1 in 5 are more modest, saving up “just enough to sleep at night” (17%), while 13% are opportunity cost conscious — they balance emergency savings with other investments.

But the study reveals awareness and momentum: Nearly half (48%) believe their emergency savings will grow over the next year:

  • 20% add to their fund sporadically when they have extra money
  • 12% have set up automatic monthly contributions

What gets in the way?

Nearly a quarter (23%) say they maintain the same emergency savings approach regardless of economic conditions, though Americans cite several common roadblocks to saving for a rainy day:

  • 39% say inflation and rising prices are the top barrier
  • 35% point to high monthly expenses
  • 32% say their income is too low or irregular
  • 22% prioritize paying off debt first

Close to half (46%) say their emergency savings account has less money compared to a year ago and more than 2 in 5 (42%) say their savings wouldn’t help them if they lost their job today. Some 40% say they can count on their family to help if something goes wrong financially.

Where do Americans keep their safety nets?

Around 37% of Americans store their emergency saving fund in a regular savings account. A quarter use a checking account (23%). Nearly 1 in 5 keep emergency cash at home (19%) — a figure that rises to 27% among Gen Z.

Only 16% have set a specific goal of saving six months of expenses. But the lack of a precise number isn’t stopping people from trying. In fact, 41% don’t have a target at all — but they’re putting away money as they go.

Generational check-in

  • Gen Z: 25% say they don’t have emergency savings yet, but a notable 33% have worked with a financial professional to help them get started.
  • Millennials: Nearly 3 in 10 have consulted an advisor about emergency savings, and they’re increasingly focused on building long-term security.
  • Gen X: The most likely generation to say they couldn’t afford an unexpected $400 expense (35%).
  • Boomers: Feel they could handle an emergency expense over $10,000.

A roadmap for resilience

When asked what would make the biggest difference in their ability to save more, respondents pointed to:

  • Higher income (48%)
  • Lower monthly expenses (37%)
  • Lower inflation or more stable prices (36%)
  • Ability to pay off debt first (27%)
  • Better tools and smarter automation (9%)

Safety net snapshot

Americans are expecting the unexpected, and many are seeking advice: More than 1 in 4 people (26%) have worked with a financial professional to plan for emergencies, including 33% of Gen Zers and 29% of Millennials.

Methodology:

Empower’s “The Safety Net” study is based on online survey responses from 2,202 Americans ages 18+ fielded by a third-party panel provider from June 3-5, 2025. The survey is weighted to be nationally representative of U.S. adults.

Home cooking celebrated in new ‘Superman: The Official Cookbook’

2025-08-22T12:01:00

(BPT) – Ever wonder what kind of food Superman grew up on? Wonder no more. Continuing a Kent Family tradition, Martha has put together an heirloom cookbook full of Clark’s favorite dishes, with help from his friends and colleagues. Together, they’ve recreated the beef bourguignon and ketchup from Lois and Clark’s first date, Cyborg’s lucky game day potato skins and J’onn’s Chocos. Martha even recreated Plurb, which she hears is wonderfully awful. She wasn’t quite ready to taste that one herself.

In “Superman: The Official Cookbook: Recipes from Smallville to the Hall of Justice and Beyond” you’ll be fully steeped in DC Comics lore courtesy of the authors, comics writer Jermaine McLaughlin and recipe developer and food stylist Elena Craig.

Each chapter revisits iconic moments in Superman’s life, sorted by various places he’s called home: from Smallville and Metropolis to the Hall of Justice and the Fortress of Solitude. The recipes are appropriate for every skill level, with step-by-step instructions, accessible ingredients and deliciously vivid food photography, making this book ideal for home cooks of all stripes.

From custom cover artwork to gorgeous food photography and fun tidbits about your favorite characters, this cookbook was crafted with fans at its heart.

Want a sneak peek? Here are three recipes to bring out the superhero in every home cook.

Argo City Salad
Yield: 6 servings

Martha says: “I designed this family-style salad for you to share with your cousin, Kara, whenever she visits. Kryptonian meals are hard to replicate on Earth, but tend to be nutrient-packed for efficiency, and Kara’s assured me this salad does a nice job of reminding her of life in Argo City.”

Salad:
2 cups sugar snap peas
1 English cucumber
4 small rainbow carrots, scrubbed
5 green onions
1 cup Sungold tomatoes, halved
1 15-ounce can chickpeas, drained, aquafaba reserved
1 avocado, peeled, pitted and diced
1 tablespoon lime juice
6 cups mixed salad greens
2 blood oranges, sliced, peeled and pithed

Dressing:
1 cup aquafaba
1 tablespoon lime juice
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1 ripe avocado, peeled and pitted
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup olive oil
Freshly ground black pepper

Special tools:
Blender
Large platter

To make the salad: Trim the ends of the snap peas, cut them into 1/2-inch pieces, and add them to a large bowl. Cut the cucumber in half lengthwise, use a small spoon to scrape out the seeds, and slice on an angle. Add to the bowl. Thinly slice the carrots and the white and light green parts of the green onion and add them to the bowl. Add tomatoes and drained chickpeas. Add the avocado and lime juice and stir gently to mix. Set aside.

To make the dressing: Add the aquafaba, lime juice, salt, garlic powder and onion powder to the pitcher of a blender. Run the blender on high speed until the mixture is thick, opaque, and has almost doubled in size, 1-2 minutes. Stop the blender and add the avocado and apple cider vinegar. Run the blender on high again until the mixture is completely smooth. With the blender on medium-low, slowly add oil through the hole in the lid until incorporated. Taste, add black pepper, and adjust seasoning as desired.

To assemble the salad: Arrange the salad greens on a large platter. Place the mixed vegetables down the center of the platter. Scatter the orange rounds over the salad. Drizzle with the dressing and serve with the rest of the dressing on the side. Leftover dressing can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Black and White Tea Sandwiches
Yield: 18 sandwiches

Apparently, this dish helped welcome Damian Wayne into the family. Alfred insists these black and white tea sandwiches helped convince Damian to put down his sword and indulge in some friendly conversation.

Cucumber Sandwiches:
1/2 English cucumber
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon finely snipped chives
1/2 cup cream cheese spread
6 slices dark rye or black bread

Chocolate Orange Sandwiches:
1/3 cup chocolate hazelnut spread or favorite chocolate spread, divided
6 slices white bread
2 tablespoons orange marmalade, divided

Special tools:
Box grater
Fine-mesh strainer
1 1/2-by-4-inch bat-shaped cookie cutter
Paring knife
2-inch round cookie cutter

To make the cucumber sandwiches: Peel the cucumber, slice it in half lengthwise, and use a small spoon to scrape out the seeds. Using the largest hole on a box grater, shred cucumber into a medium bowl and then combine it with the salt. Transfer cucumber to a fine-mesh strainer placed over the bowl, weight it down with a bowl or plate, and leave it to drain for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, give the cucumber a press with your hands to release any remaining liquid, discard the liquid, and add the cucumber back to the bowl. Add the chives and cream cheese to the bowl and mix until thoroughly combined.

Divide the mixture among 3 slices of the bread, then top each with the remaining slices. Use the cookie cutter to cut three bats out of each sandwich. With an intricate shape like the bat, a small paring knife is helpful to complete the cuts. Arrange on a plate loosely covered with paper towel and refrigerate while making the chocolate sandwiches.

To make the chocolate sandwiches: Spread a thin layer of chocolate spread on each piece of bread, about 1 tablespoon for each slice. Spread a thin layer of orange marmalade on half of the bread pieces, about 1 1/2 teaspoons each. Top with the other bread slices and use circle cookie cutter to cut 3 circles from each sandwich.

Daily Cream Donuts

Daily Cream Donuts
Yield: 10 donuts

It’s not often that a newspaper gets its own signature donut. When the Metropolis Chamber of Commerce held an open competition to find the best Daily Planet–themed dessert, this dish won in a landslide.

Pastry cream filling:
1/3 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons cornstarch
4 egg yolks
1 1/4 cups milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla paste

Dough:
3/4 cup whole milk
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, divided
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
2 1/2 teaspoons quick-rise yeast
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla paste
2 quarts canola or peanut oil for brushing and deep-frying

Chocolate glaze:
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
1 1/4 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup bittersweet chocolate chips, melted
4-6 tablespoons hot water, plus more as needed

Vanilla glaze:
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
5 tablespoons hot water, plus more as needed

Special tools:
Hand mixer
Instant-read thermometer
Stand mixer with paddle attachment
3-inch round biscuit cutter
Deep fryer or Dutch oven
Deep-frying thermometer
Pastry bag fitted with a large writing tip

To make the pastry cream filling: Add the granulated sugar, flour, cornstarch and egg yolks to a large bowl. Whisk with hand mixer on high speed until thick and pale, about 2 minutes. Set aside.

In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, bring milk to a simmer. Slowly pour about one-third of the milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly. Return the egg mixture to the remaining milk in the pan and continue cooking over medium-low heat, whisking and scraping the bottom and edges of the pot to prevent burning. Once the mixture starts to bubble, cook about 1 minute more until it thickens noticeably. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla paste. Transfer to an airtight container, pressing a piece of wax or parchment paper onto the surface and refrigerate until needed. The pastry cream must be completely chilled before filling the donuts.

To make the dough: In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the milk and butter and heat, stirring, until butter has melted and the mixture is hot but not boiling (about 125F on a thermometer). Remove from the heat.

Fit stand mixer with the paddle attachment. In the mixing bowl, combine 2 1/2 cups of the flour, granulated sugar, salt and yeast and beat on low speed to mix. Add the hot milk mixture, increase speed to medium, and beat until well blended. Add the eggs and vanilla paste and beat until fully incorporated, about 2 minutes. Add the remaining 3/4 cup flour and beat until the dough is well blended and smooth, about 1 minute longer. The dough will not pull away from the sides of the bowl and will still be somewhat sticky.

Line a baking sheet with wax paper and brush the paper with oil. Fit a second baking sheet with a wire rack or line it with paper towels. On a generously floured work surface, roll out the dough into a circle 10 inches in diameter and 1/2 inch thick. Using a 3-inch round biscuit cutter, cut out as many donuts as possible. Transfer the donuts to the oiled paper. Gather up the donut scraps and repeat rolling and cutting. Cover donuts with a clean kitchen towel and let rise until soft and puffy, about 30 minutes.

Pour oil to a depth of 2 inches into a deep fryer or Dutch oven and warm over medium-high heat until it reads between 320 and 325F on a deep-frying thermometer. Carefully lower 1 or 2 donuts into the hot oil and fry until dark golden, about 1 1/2 minutes. Turn donuts over and fry until dark golden on the second side, about 1 minute longer. Transfer to the wire rack baking sheet. Repeat to fry the remaining donuts, allowing the oil to return to between 320 and 325F between batches.

Once the donuts are cool, fill a pastry bag, fitted with large writing tip, with the pastry cream. Use a chopstick to poke a hole in the side of each donut, sticking it in about halfway across. Fill each well with pastry cream until you see the center puff slightly.

To make the chocolate glaze: Combine the butter, powdered sugar and melted chocolate in a medium bowl, whisking until combined. Add hot water until you have a glaze that is still thick but ribbons off the spoon. Glaze each donut by dipping the top into the glaze and letting the excess drip back into the bowl. Set on a baking sheet. When all the donuts have been glazed, let them set up for 10 minutes before moving on to the vanilla glaze.

To make the vanilla glaze: In a small bowl, mix together the butter, powdered sugar and vanilla. Add the hot water until you have a glaze that is still thick but ribbons off the spoon. Place the vanilla glaze into a squeeze bottle with a fine tip or a pastry bag fitted with a small writing tip. Pipe the globe grid onto each donut. Allow to set for 10 minutes before serving.

The donuts are best served day of, but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

Time to get cooking! From Jimmy Olsen’s go-to food truck gyro wrap to Oliver Queen’s spicy chili, not to mention Martha’s own award-winning apple pie, these meals combine one-of-a-kind design with comfort-food flavors so you’ll feel at home, wherever you might hang your cape.
