Rare Diagnosis Reveals Surprising Link Between Mysterious Symptoms

2025-01-06T04:01:00

(BPT) – As he approached his 40th birthday, Andrew began experiencing strange symptoms — fatigue, bone pain and frequent trips to the bathroom. Though unsettling, “I didn’t think much of them and chalked the symptoms up to things that tend to happen in middle age,” recalls the attorney and father of three. “I felt like I was constantly experiencing a low-level allergic reaction: my skin was itchy, and my eyes were watery and itchy. I felt uncomfortable in my own skin.”

But when he began to develop unusual spots on his torso, his dermatologist recommended a biopsy and a few other tests. A few days later, his doctor called with a shocking diagnosis: a rare disease called indolent systemic mastocytosis, or ISM. “It was incredible to realize all these different symptoms were related,” says Andrew.

ISM is caused by the uncontrolled increase and activity of abnormal mast cells, which play an important role in immune responses. As the cells accumulate and activate in different parts of the body, the disease can cause chronic, potentially debilitating symptoms such as skin lesions, diarrhea, fatigue, bone pain and life-threatening anaphylaxis. Symptoms of ISM are often unpredictable and can be caused by a wide range of triggers including foods and beverages, odors and scents, temperature changes, exercise, stress and more.

In addition to the toll of his physical symptoms, the appearance of his skin spots began to have a negative impact on Andrew mentally. “It made me feel really self-conscious,” he remembers. “I didn’t like looking at them in the mirror, and I avoided taking my shirt off at the pool or beach — I lost some of my confidence.”

Because his dermatologist wasn’t familiar with ISM, Andrew and his wife Shannon found a specialist in Boston. Together, they flew across the country, from their home state of Oregon, in search of help.

Seeking symptom relief

With no approved ISM treatments at the time, Andrew’s plan before he saw a specialist focused solely on reactive care. “I was treating my symptoms with eye drops when my eyes felt itchy, antihistamines when I felt reactive, and antacids when my stomach was upset. Sometimes the medications worked, sometimes they didn’t. I never knew when to expect symptoms. It felt like a game of ‘whack-a-mole’ using various medications to manage the ever-changing and unpredictable symptoms.”

A terrifying experience

A few years after his consultation with an expert on ISM, Andrew was out “in the middle of nowhere” in Idaho on a rafting trip with family and friends, when he was stung by a wasp or bee. “I ended up experiencing anaphylaxis, and because I didn’t know I was allergic, I didn’t have an epinephrine injector. Everyone around me was panicking. Fortunately, my good friend who is a physician brought a medical kit, which included a vial of epinephrine. He injected me, and I believe he saved my life right there.”

“This was an incredibly scary episode for me, and for my family. I would say that was a wake-up call. I became much more interested in researching and exploring different treatment options for ISM that went beyond supportive care. I wanted to take a more proactive approach to my care.”

Targeting the underlying cause

Andrew was now seeing a hematologist who recommended a treatment that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved called AYVAKIT® (avapritinib) for adults with ISM. Andrew and his hematologist discussed the potential benefits and side effects of AYVAKIT and decided together that Andrew would try it.

AYVAKIT is a once daily pill that works by selectively targeting the KIT D816V mutation, the underlying cause of the disease in ~95% of patients with ISM which results in the overproduction and activation of abnormal mast cells. AYVAKIT is not recommended in people with low platelet counts (less than 50 X 109/L). AYVAKIT for ISM may cause serious side effects such as cognitive effects and skin sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity). AYVAKIT can have harmful effects on pregnancy and fertility as well as cause harm to the unborn baby. Talk to your healthcare provider for more information.

“I was encouraged to hear there was another option for me and hopeful that AYVAKIT could improve some of my most bothersome symptoms.”

‘Comfortable in my own skin’

Andrew started taking AYVAKIT in October of 2023. “I’m glad that I took the leap and decided to try AYVAKIT after talking it over with my doctor. Now I’m more than a year into treatment, and so far, I haven’t experienced cognitive side effects, which I was concerned would impact my work.”

While he still takes precautions on his family adventures rock climbing and skiing, Andrew has noticed changes in his ISM symptoms. “My skin spots are lighter and my tryptase (allergic reactive marker) levels are lower, which is reassuring to me. My spots are still there, and I occasionally feel fatigued, but overall though, I feel my symptoms are better. I feel comfortable in my own skin.”

“I would love to encourage other people with ISM to chart their own course and lean in to finding a solution. Everyone’s experience is going to be different, but there are solutions out there, you just have to find them. So do your own research, ask your own questions, and do what is right for you.”

Woman climbs Kilimanjaro after life-changing blood cancer diagnosis

2025-01-06T08:33:00

(BPT) – Sponsored by GSK

This is Allison’s personal multiple myeloma story, and others may be different. Allison is a paid spokesperson for GSK.

Allison’s Story

When the back pain, exhaustion and string of respiratory infections hit, Allison Freedman initially chalked it up to the price of a busy life. At age 42, the active mom of twins was fresh out of an MBA program and had just moved to Boulder, Colorado, to start a new job.

As she continued to feel worse and the pain became excruciating, she knew something was wrong. A CT scan revealed multiple broken vertebrae and ribs, and then she heard the words no one is ever prepared for: you have cancer.

A PET scan, bloodwork and bone marrow biopsy confirmed that it was multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer that forms in the bone marrow, weakening the bones and immune system[i].

Multiple myeloma is the second most common blood cancer in the US[ii], with more than 35,000 new cases diagnosed each year[iii].

While anyone can get multiple myeloma, it’s most common in people 65 and older, slightly more common in men than women and twice as common among Black Americans versus white[iv]. Freedman didn’t fit the typical profile at all, which made her diagnosis all the more surreal.

The Battle Begins

Freedman’s doctor told her that although there is no cure for multiple myeloma, there are treatments available[v]. She first underwent induction, or front-line therapy, before it was determined that she was a candidate for high dose chemotherapy followed by an autologous stem cell transplant to rebuild her bone marrow using her own healthy cells[vi].

After the transplant, her cancer went into remission, and she started maintenance therapy to help keep it from coming back. She continues regular care and monitoring by her oncology team. For any person diagnosed with multiple myeloma, this ongoing care and monitoring with your healthcare team is critical as the majority of patients see the cancer return following initial treatment success (known as a recurrence or relapse), or fail to respond to treatment altogether (known as refractory)[vii].

Through it all, Freedman devoted every ounce of her energy to making memories with her kids, who were eight years old at the time of her diagnosis.

“I started to see the value of things I had been rushing through,” Freedman said. “Parenting can be grueling, but suddenly I wanted every moment with my kids.”

Climbing Back to Life

Although Freedman’s cancer seemed to be at bay, she was still very weak, and the fractures had yet to heal. Despite all that, she had a strong drive to get back to her active lifestyle.

“It started with short walks, then longer ones. I missed being out in nature, so I pushed myself, bit by bit,” Freedman said.

Then, she heard about a group of multiple myeloma survivors and supporters who were climbing Mount Kilimanjaro — the tallest mountain in Africa — to raise awareness and money for the disease. The idea was daunting, but for Freedman, it wasn’t just about the physical challenge. It was about reclaiming her life. At age 50, after months of preparation, she found herself standing at the foot of the mountain, ready to begin her ascent.

The climb was brutal, but it was also healing.

“Getting to the top with this new community I’d found — it was one of the most powerful moments of my life,” Freedman said.

Moving Forward

After that experience, Freedman started sharing her story with the world so that she might help others to find their inner fortitude and imagine a future full of possibilities.

Her twins, now high school seniors, have grown up witnessing their mother’s incredible resilience.

“Their childhood has been shaped by having a mom with cancer,” Freedman said. “But I hope they’ve learned that even when life gets hard, you don’t give up. You put one foot in front of the other.”

Tips to ensure year-round comfort at home

2024-12-31T09:53:00

(BPT) – Transforming unused areas of a home into comfortable, functional spaces can be easier than one might think thanks to modern heating and cooling solutions. Whether it’s a sunroom that’s too cold to enjoy in the winter, a garage that turns into a sauna during the summer, or a basement that’s always chilly, the right systems can help create a comfortable environment in every corner of a home. These innovative solutions improve comfort while maximizing a home’s usability and value.

Following are tips on how homeowners can unlock the full potential of their home’s living space, making it enjoyable 365 days a year.

Transform a Sunroom into a Four-Seasons Retreat

Sunrooms offer a bright, inviting space, but they’re often underutilized due to extreme temperatures. Installing a ductless mini-split system provides efficient heating and cooling, making a sunroom comfortable no matter the season.

Mini-splits, such as a Friedrich® Floating Air Mini-Split System, are ideal for spaces without existing ductwork, offering an easy, non-invasive installation. These systems allow precise temperature control, ensuring the sunroom stays cozy in winter and cool in summer. Plus, its energy efficiency helps homeowners enjoy this space without worrying about high utility bills. Operating quietly, mini-splits let users relax or entertain without background noise disrupting the peace.

Turn the Garage into a Temperature-Controlled Bonus Space

Garages are often overlooked when it comes to heating and cooling, leaving them uncomfortable for extended use. Garages can serve as home gyms, workshops or extra storage. However, without proper heating and cooling, they’re often too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. Installing another ductless option like Floating Air Pro can combat that problem, converting a garage into a comfortable, climate-controlled space fit for year-round use.

Their advanced smart technology allows the user to set customized, true room-by-room comfort with individually controlled indoor options. Quiet and efficient, a mini-split transforms a garage into a functional extension of the home.

Enhance Basement Comfort with Zoned Systems

For any homeowner planning to upgrade their HVAC system, it’s the perfect time to think about the entire home — especially those spaces that are underutilized, like the basement. With the right heating and cooling solutions, every corner of the home can be comfortable and functional all year long, including areas that aren’t used every day.

Combining Rheem’s Heat Pump with an Air Handler can create a zoned system that offers tailored comfort while maximizing energy efficiency. Pair that system with the company’s EcoNet Smart Thermostat’s Zoning Solution to make it easy to condition the basement only when needed, which is ideal for spaces that are not used year-round. With a simple adjustment on the EcoNet Smart Thermostat, the master control for the zoning system, a homeowner can open a damper to direct airflow into the basement, ensuring it’s comfortable when occupied and conserving energy when it’s not.

By adding home solutions such as mini-splits, heat pumps and air handlers, homeowners can unlock a home’s full functionality and comfortably enjoy each room year-round.

End your year meaningfully with a gift that grows

2024-12-30T08:03:00

(BPT) – With one year coming to a close and another about to begin, this is the perfect time to reflect on how you’ve been blessed this year, as well as ways to best live your values going forward. For example, did you know a simple act of generosity today can grow to have a life-changing impact for a family in need in the new year? To mark the end of the year, consider giving a gift that keeps on giving — and growing — throughout the year ahead.

Three children holding two chickens and a goat.

Here are some ideas to help you celebrate the coming of a new year.

1. Give a gift that keeps on giving — and growing

To end your year in an impactful way, consider a donation to World Vision, a global Christian humanitarian organization that offers concrete, long-lasting support to families. One of the ways they carry this out is through life-changing gifts donated through World Vision’s Gift Catalog which features hundreds of items ranging from $10 to $15,000. No matter what you chose to give — whether it’s emergency food, clothing, school supplies or farm animals, your gift can grow in impact as it equips families with resources to rise above poverty and live fuller lives.

Girl holding a goat

For example, a donation of goats can make a life-changing difference for a family by providing a steady source of nutritious milk or meat — and income from selling their offspring. Or chickens, which offer a steady supply of eggs to help ensure consistent nutrition for children — and lead to more chickens that can be an income source in the future. With each passing day, these gifts can grow in impact to change lives for good!

And animals aren’t the only gifts that grow. A donation for a well can become a source of life for an entire community. Gifts supporting education are investments in a child’s future. Each gift — given in your name or in the name of a loved one — can support the health and well-being of children and families in need.

2. Read stories of surviving — and thriving

When World Vision launched a food security program in Cuchumatanes mountains of Guatemala, single mom Nicolasa and her two daughters were among those selected to participate. Nicolasa received piglets to raise, along with training that equipped her to start her own business.

“I was trained on how to save, how to set up a business, how to take advantage of investment and resources, and how to lead a normal life,” shares Nicolasa. “We did not imagine that we would have so much support from World Vision, but thank God, as you can see, this is the product.”

Nicolasa is hard at work raising 12 piglets, along with an additional four pigs that she uses for breeding. From the profits she’s saved from pig sales, she’s been able to build a sturdy house for her family.

This is only one story among many, and you have the opportunity to help another family like hers to not only survive, but thrive, through your generous gift, like the gift of animals. Read more about Nicolasa and other stories of growth at WorldVision.org.

3. Browse unique, artisan-made gifts for your loved ones any time of year

You can also make a difference by shopping the World Vision Gift Catalog for artisan-made gifts, including the handcrafted gifts featured by World Vision’s celebrity supporters. Consider giving to a friend or family member for a birthday or other occasion. For example, you could gift the “Wrapped in Peace” silk scarf featured by Melissa Joan Hart.

Donate to receive a handcrafted gift (for yourself or a loved one!), and your donation goes to the World Vision Fund. This fund helps meet critical needs today and tomorrow — equipping families and their communities with resources and tools to lift themselves out of poverty or recover from a disaster. You can browse a variety of beautiful items at Donate.WorldVision.org/gift-catalog.

4. Learn how World Vision reaches families worldwide

World Vision has a presences in nearly 100 countries, including the U.S., with nearly 75 years of experience working with communities, donors, partners and governments to empower vulnerable children living in the toughest places for better futures.

5. Share the blessings

After you’ve counted the blessings you and your family received over the holidays, consider giving a gift a family will never forget, an opportunity to transform their family’s future, truly expressing the meaning of the season. Learn more about the profound impact these gifts make, and how you can help, by visiting WorldVisionGifts.org.

6 ways to prioritize mental wellness this year

2024-12-30T07:01:00

(BPT) – The new year means resolutions, reflection and recharging. It’s a fresh start, a time when new, healthier habits seem possible. This year, along with eating healthier and exercising more, prioritize your mental wellness. Hit reset and take steps to clear your mind to feel focused, energized and ready to tackle the new year ahead.

Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner shares her top tips for achieving mental clarity and starting the year off with your best foot forward.

1. Declutter your space

You’d be surprised by how much an organized home and workspace matter to your psyche. As you clear that clutter, you’re clearing your mind, too. A neat and tidy home can reduce your stress.

Start small by tackling one drawer or surface at a time and consider donating or recycling items you no longer need to create a sense of accomplishment while helping others. A decluttered space also allows for easier cleaning and creates a more welcoming environment for yourself and others.

2. Unplug

Make a resolution to take a break from technology every now and then. Constant screen time, with the overwhelming amount of information coming at us every day, can lead to stress and anxiety. Breaks from technology give your mind time to recharge.

Begin by setting boundaries, such as designated “no-phone” zones like the dining table or bedroom, and experiment with “digital detox” days where you disconnect completely. Replace screen time with activities that nurture your well-being, like journaling, reading a book, or spending time with loved ones in person.

3. Connect with nature

While you’re unplugged, find some time to get outside, whether it’s a quiet moment in a park, walking the dog through your neighborhood or simply enjoying fresh air. Numerous studies show that people who spend even a small amount of time in green spaces have reduced anxiety, stress and depression.

4. Prioritize sleep

Unplugging and getting outside will help with your sleep, too. Establish a consistent bedtime routine that includes calming activities like reading or listening to soft music.

In order to get the best night’s sleep possible, avoid caffeine or heavy meals a few hours before bed to give your body the best chance at relaxation, create a sleep-friendly environment by keeping your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet and limit screen time at least an hour before bed.

5. Eat more foods that contain nutrients that will support brain function

Incorporating foods like eggs, fatty fish and whole grains that contain nutrients to support brain function and mood can also regulate your mental well-being. Eggland’s Best eggs are an excellent source of Vitamin B5, which helps maintain a healthy digestive system and assists the body in using other vitamins, especially Vitamin B2, which helps manage stress. Eggland’s Best eggs contain more than double the Vitamin B12 compared to ordinary eggs, providing a natural energy boost and keeping you energized and satisfied throughout the day.

6. Create a consistent morning routine

To make the most of your mornings in the new year, start with setting intentional habits, like light stretching, journaling or enjoying a nutritious breakfast like Eggland’s Best Mexican Frittata with Poblanos, Potatoes and Queso Fresco to fuel your brain for the day ahead.

Ingredients:

  • 8 Eggland’s Best eggs, large
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup chopped white onion
  • 2 poblano chiles (about 11 ounces), charred, sweated, peeled, stemmed, seeded and cut into 1-x-1/2-inch strips
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher or coarse sea salt, or to taste
  • 1 pound red potatoes, peeled, diced, cooked in salted boiling water for 5 minutes, and drained
  • Pinch of freshly ground black pepper, or to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 3/4 cup diced queso fresco (about 4 ounces)

Method:

1. Preheat the broiler.

2. Heat the oil in a 10- to 12-inch broiler proof skillet over medium heat until hot but not smoking. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and barely beginning to brown, six to eight minutes. Add the chiles and cook until they begin to brown lightly, about three minutes.

3. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl with a whisk or a fork, beat the eggs with the milk and 1/4 teaspoon of the salt until foamy.

4. Toss the potatoes into the onion mixture, stir in the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt, the pepper and allspice, and cook, stirring occasionally, until the potatoes are completely softened, about 6 to 8 minutes.

5. Pour the egg mixture on top of the potato mixture and stir gently as the eggs begin to cook along the edges and bottom of the pan, 2 to 3 minutes. Sprinkle the cheese on top.

6. Place the skillet under the broiler and broil until the frittata is puffed and lightly browned on top, 3 to 4 minutes. Remove from the oven, cut into wedges and serve, or let cool and serve at room temperature.

Happy New Year to all!

Resolutions for Your Ride: Preventive Maintenance Tops the List

2024-12-30T07:01:00

(BPT) – American drivers are turning over a new leaf when it comes to car care. Hankook Tire’s latest Gauge Index Survey highlights a renewed commitment to proactive vehicle maintenance and tire replacements, driven by a combined desire for increased preparedness and to protect long-term investments. With preventive maintenance leading 2025 driving vehicle resolutions, here are top goals when it comes to driving habits and priorities for the year ahead.

A Preventive Mindset Gains Traction

When it comes to New Year’s resolutions behind the wheel, increasing preventive maintenance (29%) tops the list of drivers’ 2025 car-related resolutions. This focus on proactive care underscores a growing awareness of the benefits, including reduced repair costs, enhanced vehicle safety, and longer car lifespans.

Generational differences, however, reveal varying priorities. Among Gen Z drivers, 26% place keeping their car interior clean at the top of their driving resolutions list, compared to just 18% who prioritize routine maintenance. This difference reflects how younger drivers may view their vehicles more as personal spaces and harbor a desire to keep it clean and comfortable.

Preparing for the Costs of Care

Though many resolve to increase preventive maintenance, only 1-in-4 drivers currently budget or save annually for car care expenses. Encouragingly, 18% plan to create a budget for the first time in 2025, signaling a shift toward financial preparedness.

Interestingly, older generations are less inclined to take a proactive approach to budgeting. Forty percent of Gen X drivers and 54% of Boomers say they don’t have a car maintenance budget but try to prepare for unexpected costs, compared to 29% and 30% of Gen Z and Millennial drivers.

Tires Remain a Top Priority for Vehicle Maintenance

Tires continue to be a major focus for drivers looking at maintenance plans in 2025, with 65% expecting to replace one or more tires in the coming year. When looking at what prompts drivers to replace their tires, reasons vary:

  • 28% of drivers replace tires when they see eroding tread, making it the leading cause across the board.
  • 22% of drivers replace tires when they feel it is affecting the vehicle’s handling, highlighting how performance concerns play a significant role in maintenance decisions.
  • Mechanic or dealer recommendations drive 14% of replacements, particularly among older generations. Older drivers rely more heavily on professional advice, as 23% of Boomers replace tires based on a mechanic or dealer’s recommendation, compared to 13% of Gen X, 13% of Gen Z, and just 8% of Millennials.

And drivers are prepared to pay when the time comes: 54% of drivers expect to spend up to $999 on new tires in 2025.

Routine Maintenance and Aftermarket Spending Trends

In addition to tires, 34% of drivers expect to spend $100-$499 on routine maintenance like oil changes and inspections in 2025. Meanwhile, a third (33%) of drivers anticipate spending over $1,000 on unexpected repairs, highlighting a perception that unplanned fixes can be more costly than routine maintenance. This contrast may help explain why preventive maintenance has become a higher priority for many drivers in 2025 as it’s a proactive approach to avoid unexpected and potentially expensive repairs.

Meanwhile, aftermarket upgrades like custom wheels, paint jobs, or interior enhancements remain a niche investment, with 33% of drivers opting out entirely. Among those who invest in enhancements, Millennials lead the way in high-value aftermarket spending, with 16% planning to spend $1,000-$2,499. This interest highlights Millennial drivers’ enthusiasm for personalization and style.

Key Takeaways for the 2025 Road

Hankook’s findings reveal drivers are embracing greater responsibility for their vehicles’ health. Drivers are showing a clear understanding that preventive maintenance, budgeting, and timely tire replacements are not just best practices but essential habits for safer, more efficient driving.

By making proactive car care a priority, drivers can reduce costly surprises and extend the lifespan of their vehicles. Tiremakers like Hankook are also stepping up to meet evolving consumer needs with products like the Weatherflex GT for year-round performance and the iON series for electric vehicles.

Mind the Gap: Six Tips to Assess Your Healthcare Coverage Before the New Year

2024-12-26T14:09:00

(BPT) – The new year is a good time to reset. From a fresh start on lifestyle choices, hobbies or pursuits, to the less exciting — but no less important — aspects of life, like memberships, contracts and even health insurance. Health insurance deductibles reset in the new year, so it’s a good idea to keep that in mind as you plan for healthcare expenses. Any changes made to your health insurance plan during open enrollment go into effect as well.

“Even if you spent hours researching your health plan before making a selection, there’s always a possibility for the occasional surprise once coverage kicks in, which is why it’s important to assess your healthcare coverage and address any gaps before January 1,” said Doug Armstrong, Vice President of Health Products and Services at AARP Services, Inc. “AARP members can take advantage of benefits available to them to help find the coverage and savings information they seek.”

1. Examine your vision coverage

Eye health is important to quality of life, both in terms of moving around safely and appreciating your surroundings. Regular eye exams with an ophthalmologist or optometrist can help make sure your vision is sharp while also monitoring for any issues. However, many health insurance plans don’t include vision coverage. If you do see a gap in your coverage, AARP members have access to information on vision insurance options that offer individual and family plans, featuring a large doctor network, savings on frames, lens enhancements, progressives and more.

2. Plan for prescriptions

While several health plans offer coverage for prescription drugs, discounts can vary, especially when it comes to different types of medication. AARP® Prescription Discounts Provided by Optum RX® can help with savings. This program offers a free prescription discount card that can be used at over 66,000 pharmacies nationwide for savings on FDA-approved medications. Additional benefits for AARP members include home delivery, deeper discounts on medications, coverage for dependents and more.

3. Confirm your primary care

With a new health insurance plan, you might find that your primary care physician is no longer in-network or that they no longer accept your insurance. Perhaps you have relocated and are in the market for a new doctor. Whatever the case, there’s no time like the present to search for a new primary care physician who meets your needs. If you’re on Medicare, Oak Street Health can be a great resource.

The only primary care provider to carry the AARP name, Oak Street Health provides primary care for adults on Medicare and focuses on prevention with personalized care to help keep you healthy — physically, mentally and socially. Benefits include same-day/next-day appointments where available, convenient locations, a dedicated care team and a 24/7 patient support line. AARP membership is not required to visit an Oak Street Health location.

4. Protect your smile

Optimal dental care includes daily brushing and flossing and a visit to the dentist every six months. During your visit, the dentist can monitor for and treat any issues, such as cavities or gum disease. However, not all plans include dental insurance, which means you might end up paying out of pocket for your cleaning and other procedures. To avoid that, take a look at your coverage. If needed, explore information on dental insurance options that offer individual or family coverage for the most common dental procedures. Dental insurance generally pays for regular check-ups, so many people who purchase protection will benefit from it immediately.

5. Clarify your hearing coverage

Hearing loss is a common age-related ailment. According to the National Institute on Aging, one-third of older adults have hearing loss, and the chance of developing hearing loss increases with age. Hearing aids can be an enormous help, improving socialization, boosting confidence and even helping to increase balance. However, many insurance plans do not include coverage for hearing aids.

AARP® Hearing Solutions™ provided by UnitedHealthcare® Hearing provides savings on hearing aids and hearing care. Members can save an average of $2,000 per pair on prescription hearing aids and 15% on accessories — no insurance needed. Plus receive a hearing exam and consultation at no cost and personalized support through a large nationwide network of hearing providers.

6. Consider physical therapy

Often, the only times that people consider whether their health insurance covers physical therapy is if they already participate in it or after the doctor has prescribed it. As we age, though, physical therapy can be a useful tool in improving balance or recovering from an injury or procedure to help you remain active. Fortunately, the question of coverage or finding an in-network location doesn’t have to derail you. AARP® Physical Therapy At Home™ by Luna accepts most insurances and Medicare and is available to members and non-members alike. Plus, Luna’s experts come to you, so you can receive quality care from the comfort of your home.

If you’re creating an end-of-year to-do list, consider adding an assessment of your healthcare coverage. After all, the best time to realize you have a gap in coverage is before you need it. To learn more about AARP member benefits, visit aarp.org/benefits.

Headed South for Winter? 5 Tips for Snowbirds About to Take Flight

2024-12-26T16:01:01

(BPT) – Every year, roughly 20-30% of older Americans head to warmer climates for the colder winter months. Snowbirds are often retirees on fixed incomes, though flexible work environments now provide more opportunities for anyone to spend several months escaping the chill. Whether on a fixed income or an empty nester with disposable income, consumers are interested in saving money where they can. With this in mind, snowbirds can look to their AARP membership to take advantage of relevant discounts and offerings as they fluff their feathers and get ready for takeoff.

From savory breakfast options while driving to your seasonal destination, to home and auto protection, and even resources to support mental and physical health, AARP member benefits offer deals and savings that will help snowbirds take flight this winter.

“Spending winters in warmer places has so many benefits that come with being able to be outside more often. Warmth and sunlight not only increase serotonin levels, which can result in more positive moods and a calm, focused mental outlook, but they also stimulate vitamin D production and may even boost immunity,” said Elvira Christiansen, Director of Retail and Loyalty for AARP Services. “An AARP membership makes it even better by offering savings as you plan your trip, as well as at many dining, entertainment and retail locations you will come across in your winter getaway destination, helping you to enjoy it to the fullest.”

1. Order Up

Road trips are often the preferred way to travel to a winter home for the flexibility of having a car once there. Whether your drive will have you behind the wheel for hours or days, you’ll want to make sure you have your meals planned out. Fill up with a tasty breakfast or lunch with a stop at Denny’s, which is easy to spot from most major highways.

AARP members can save when heading to Denny’s. With over 1,500 locations nationwide, members save 15% on everything from diner classics to breakfast items every day; maximum discount not to exceed $10. Restrictions apply.

2. Primary Care from Almost Anywhere

Feeling under the weather can put a damper on your winter travels, so it’s a good idea to make sure you can access quality healthcare even when you’re at your winter destination. If you are on Medicare, you can check whether there is an Oak Street Health primary care clinic near you. Oak Street Health, the only primary care provider to carry the AARP name, provides primary care for adults on Medicare and focuses on prevention with personalized care to help keep you healthy — physically, mentally and socially. Benefits include same-day/next-day appointments where available, convenient locations, a dedicated care team and a 24/7 patient support line. AARP membership is not required to visit an Oak Street Health clinic.

3. Wellness Checklist

Once you check off primary care needs for your winter destination, don’t overlook other priorities like maintaining your prescriptions and protecting your vision. Start by making sure your prescriptions are up to date before you head out of town. If you do need a refill while you’re away, you have access to a free prescription discount card from AARP® Prescription Discounts provided by Optum Rx® that can be used at over 66,000 pharmacies nationwide for savings on FDA-approved medications. You do not need to be an AARP member to take advantage of these benefits, though AARP members receive additional perks, including deeper discounts on medications, home delivery, coverage for your dependents and more.

If you’re having trouble with your vision, want to update your sunglass prescription, or simply want to maintain your annual visits to an optometrist or ophthalmologist while away, AARP members have access to information on vision insurance options that offer individual and family plans, featuring a large doctor network, savings on frames, lens enhancements, progressives and more.

4. Home (Safety) Away from Home

One thing that should always be a priority is keeping your home safe while you’re away for the winter. While Neighborhood Watch is always helpful, long periods away from a home require additional security systems. With an AARP membership, homeowners can secure their homes for less.

Members save 5% on monthly home security monitoring with ADT Home Security, which covers smart home security systems including intrusion monitoring, connected smoke and CO detection, and smart automation for video doorbells, security cameras and smart locks.

5. Pack Auto Coverage in Your Luggage

Driving south for the winter? Utilize AARP member benefits to save on auto care so you can road trip worry free. AARP members save up to 20% on annual membership fees for Allstate Roadside Assistance plans, which provides access to assistance for towing, jump-starts, tire changes, lockout assistance, fuel delivery and more. Allstate Roadside plan benefits can be used 24/7 in any car you drive, including rented and borrowed ones.

And, if you want to bring any personal items with you but don’t have room to squeeze them in your car, Budget Truck Rental has a variety of trucks for you to choose from. AARP members can save 20% on local or one-way truck rentals on Sunday through Thursday and 10% on Friday and Saturday, plus receive a $10-per-day Physical Damage Waiver.

Regardless of how you’re traveling or spending your winter months, AARP member benefits can help you maximize your budget while you prioritize the things that matter.

Looking to Up Your Fitness in the New Year? This Expert Says Tech Can Help

2024-12-26T01:01:00

(BPT) – From wearables to apps, New Year’s fitness resolutions are getting a tech boost that’s catching on, with T-Mobile customers spending 23% more time on average on fitness-related apps in the last year.

At midnight on New Year’s Eve, many make a familiar pledge: to get fit.

For the nearly half of all U.S. adults who make fitness-related resolutions, technology such as wearable devices and apps can be key to keeping this pledge, said A’Naja Newsome, Ph.D., a Researcher and Assistant Professor at the University of Central Florida who has written about fitness technology. Newsome also hosts a podcast, Strength in the Details, on which she talks about the impact of mental health, nutrition and leadership on strength training.

“Technology has really been adapted and modified to be appealing to a wide genre of exercisers,” Newsome said. “People just really have to prioritize what’s going to be important to them right now and invest in that.”

Your Goals, Your Way

There’s no one-size-fits-all for fitness technology. Start with an assessment of what you value and what your fitness goals are, Newsome says. Whether you’re planning to run an ultramarathon or signing up for your first gym membership, there’s something for everyone to keep their resolutions.

“We have so many of these wearable devices that can track things like heart rate, calories, steps and more,” Newsome said. “And then we have things like mobile apps where people can use paid or free services to track their daily physical activity behaviors.”

Beginners can start with mobile apps that come with quick and simple workouts — and if they value aesthetics, they can invest in wearables that also serve as a fashion piece, she says.

Physical activity tracking devices have historically been geared to sport-specific athletes, particularly in running and cycling. However, “we’re also seeing it expand to outdoor sports like hiking, climbing and swimming, and we’re even starting to see tech for things like flexibility and mobility training and special populations like pre- and postnatal individuals,” Newsome said.

The expansion of these technologies is leading to a shift back to basic fitness practices, she says, with a focus on everyday activities and movements such as time spent standing, daily steps, breathing and meditation rather than specific, structured exercise routines.

“Wearable technology now is telling us what is happening with the rest of our day,” Newsome said. “What is happening with our sleep? What is happening with our steps? What is happening with our sedentary behavior?”

The fitness technology market has grown as more people turn to apps to support their goals. Among T-Mobile customers, the average time spent per month using fitness-related apps — such as running, weight and fitness trackers — increased by 23% between 2023 and 2024.

And on America’s largest, fastest and most awarded 5G network, customers can get uninterrupted streaming for their workout videos and real-time data feeds on their performance.

Newsome said she expects the mobile apps and wearable device markets to continue to grow in 2025. The next frontier is integrating these technologies into healthcare in the future, allowing for more holistic treatment plans and monitoring capabilities, she added.

Make It Personal

Choosing new fitness technology is a personal decision based on individual values and priorities. Now, artificial intelligence is taking personalization even further by creating workout plans tailored to an individual’s unique data, Newsome said.

“AI is generating these customizable workouts for your home gym, for on-the-go, your travel, for those that are short on time,” she said. “That’s going to reach a demographic of people who maybe thought that they didn’t have the time to exercise or for those that just didn’t have the know-how to exercise.”

Wearable tech, mobile apps and AI can be even more supercharged with human input, Newsome said. She advised people to consult with an exercise professional or their medical provider before embarking on a new fitness regimen or making significant changes based on their wearable technology data.

Social support is the key factor in helping people change their behavior, she said, so supplement the benefits from wearable devices and mobile apps by seeking out peers and professionals. She also advises to not rely on technology so much that it creates a barrier to reaching your goals, like skipping a workout because your smart watch ran out of battery.

With all the innovations that promise to up performance and get people moving, there’s never been a better time to conquer your fitness goals. So as the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, remember: Fitness technology can give you a push, but the most important piece of equipment is your willpower, and all it takes is the first step. You’ve got this!

Unwrapping the retail shopping season

2024-12-24T05:01:00

(BPT) – With all the talk about the economy lately, how did the 2024 holiday shopping season shake out? Were people buying? If so, how did their spending compare to past years? What and where were they buying?

Visa dove into some analysis of the holiday season, via the Visa Retail Spend Monitor, from Visa Consulting & Analytics. The Retail Spend Monitor looks at total retail sales activity across all forms of payments, not just Visa. It uses a subset of Visa payments network data, which processes a staggering 234 billion transactions per year — that’s 639 million each day.

It found that, overall, during the seven-week period starting on November 1, retail spending in the U.S. increased by 4.8% from last year.

“This holiday shopping season, we’re seeing strong consumer confidence as people sought out in-store experiences — and went online — to purchase gifts and celebrate the holidays with friends and family. This spending growth demonstrates the adaptability of both consumers and retailers and the overall strength of the economy,” said Wayne Best, chief economist at Visa.

Here are some highlights of what the analysis found.

We’re going back to the mall… Out of total retail spend in the U.S., 77% was in store versus 23% online. This led total retail spend in stores to grow at a healthy rate of 4.1% (vs 1.6% last year).

…but we still love the convenience of online shopping. It’s so easy to buy what you need from the comfort of your home or office with just a few clicks. Online shopping increased by 7.1%, versus 10.3% last year. It’s not just about convenience, though. Shoppers like how easy it is to compare prices online and look for the best deals.

People still love their electronics… This sector of the retail market had a 4.2% growth rate vs. 2.8% last year. It was driven by new products, holiday deals and home entertainment technology.

…and always love their clothing and accessories. Did you unwrap a festive holiday sweater? You’re not alone. Clothes saw a 5% rise in sales, versus 2.4% last year.

We were nesting, too. Sales of building materials increased by 4.7%, versus a negative 3.9% last year. It means we were making our homes cozy for the holidays.

The whole world was shopping! Across the globe, holiday shoppers were spending. Brazil saw a 12.2% increase, while South Africa experienced 7.0% growth. Both regions enjoyed double-digit growth across all five merchant categories. The U.K. joined the festive cheer with a 2.3% rise, and Australia saw a 7.4% bump in overall spend.

Grinchy fraudsters were still at it. Fraudsters doubled down this year, with Visa reporting that it blocked nearly double the amount of suspected fraud this year versus 2023 during the weekend of Black Friday through Cyber Monday.

What does it all mean? It means people were spending with confidence, and their loved ones got some holiday cheer.
