Understanding Myelosuppression: Big Implications for Small Cell Lung Cancer

2023-11-13T08:01:00

(BPT) – Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a rare disease in which cancerous cells form in the tissues of the lung, accounting for ~15% of all lung cancers.1 “Small cell” refers to the small, uniform nature of the cells under the microscope – contrary to non-small cell, where cells vary in both size and shape.

SCLC is typically categorized into two stages: limited stage and extensive stage, the latter describing cancers that have spread widely throughout the lung, to the other lung, to lymph nodes across the chest, or even to other parts of the body, such as the bone marrow. Because of the aggressive nature of the condition, 80-85% of patients are diagnosed with SCLC once it has reached this extensive-stage.2 With this, early detection and diagnosis can offer the best chance of successful treatment for people living with SCLC.

In recognition of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, let’s take a closer look to better understand the treatment journey of those living with SCLC.

Chemotherapy helps destroy the tumor, but also healthy bone marrow.

Because SCLC spreads quickly throughout the body, intravenous treatment such as chemotherapy remains a cornerstone of care; however, while chemotherapy works to destroy cancer cells, it does not have the ability to differentiate between cancer cells and healthy cells – ultimately damaging both.

One harmful side effect of chemotherapy is damage to the bone marrow – the parent source of multiple cell types, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. When the bone marrow is damaged, this results in low blood cell count, also known as myelosuppression.

Myelosuppression can have serious consequences.

Myelosuppression can put people at increased risk of infection, fatigue, and bleeding.3 To better understand its impact, it’s helpful to first understand the functions each of our cell-types play in supporting our bodies:

  • White blood cells are responsible for fighting infection, so when white blood cell counts are low – the scientific term is neutropenia – people are at a higher risk of infection;
  • Red blood cells carry oxygen around the body, so when red blood cell counts are low – also known as anemia – this can lead to feelings of weakness, fatigue, dizziness or difficulty breathing;
  • Platelets help clot blood, so with fewer platelets – called thrombocytopenia – there is a higher risk of bleeding or excessive bruising.

Having low blood cell counts or platelets can negatively impact people’s health and treatment, which can result in hospitalization, the need for blood transfusions or rescue interventions, as well as reduction in dose or delays in chemotherapy treatment.4,5 In fact, neutropenia and anemia are two of the top reasons people being treated with chemotherapy enter the emergency room or hospital.6

Mitigating myelosuppression is possible.

For people undergoing chemotherapy, traditional treatment options for myelosuppression often promote and replace cells that have been damaged or depleted due to the chemotherapy and aim to stimulate the recovery of damaged cells. These interventions are used with the goal of stimulating or replacing individual cell lineages after the damage from chemotherapy occurs and can include:

  • G-CSFs (Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor) are typically given to people who experience neutropenia (low white blood cell counts) after chemotherapy to help stimulate the body to produce more white blood cells (neutrophils) to protect against infection;
  • ESAs (Erythropoietin Stimulating Agent) are given to people who experience anemia after chemotherapy to stimulate the bone marrow to make red blood cells;
  • Red blood cell transfusions provide another option for people with anemia but can create other burdens for the patient including additional travel for appointments and procedures.
  • While there are no approved treatments for chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia, healthcare providers may consider platelet transfusions for people with low platelets.

Alternatively, some people with SCLC may have the option to receive treatment in advance of chemotherapy which may help reduce the negative effects of chemotherapy on bone marrow cells. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with SCLC, talk to your healthcare provider about your options. Let’s debunk 6 myths about the flu shot

2023-11-13T14:13:01

(BPT) – The seasons are changing and with winter comes, unfortunately, the flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests a flu vaccination is your best protection against influenza.

While flu is most serious for older Americans and individuals with certain chronic conditions, it can affect people of all ages. The CDC says the best way to protect yourself and your family is by getting a vaccine early. Flu vaccination is recommended for everyone, ages 6 months and up — with few exceptions.

“Annual flu shots can prevent you from missing work or an important event that you have been looking forward to attending,” said Dr. Donna O’Shea, chief medical officer of population health for UnitedHealthcare.

If you’re unsure whether the vaccine is right for you and your family, some important information may help cut through the confusion. Here are a few common myths and the facts that help disprove them:

Myth #1: Flu shots don’t really work

Facts: According to the CDC, the flu vaccine reduces the risk of the illness by between 40% and 60%. The vaccine’s effectiveness depends on multiple factors, including the amount of time between vaccination and exposure to the disease, your age and health status. Additionally, flu vaccinations can help protect people around you, especially when the vaccine is well matched to viruses circulating in a given year.

Myth #2: I got vaccinated last year, so I should be good for this year, too

Facts: The flu virus changes each year, so flu vaccines change as well. Plus, the body’s immune response to a flu vaccine declines over time, which is why the CDC advises yearly vaccination as the best option for protection.

Myth #3: I exercise and eat healthy food, so I don’t need to get vaccinated

Facts: It is true that being healthy may help you recover from illness more quickly, but it may not prevent you from getting or spreading the flu. Healthy people can be infected and spread the flu virus without showing symptoms.

Myth #4: I got the COVID-19 vaccine, so I can’t get the flu vaccine

Facts: The viruses are different, and so are the vaccines used to prevent them. There are no interactions between the vaccines, and both are recommended by the CDC to help maintain optimal health. Additionally, if you want to save a trip, you can get the flu vaccine and the COVID-19 vaccine or booster at the same time. Additional vaccines can be given at the same time you receive your influenza or COVID vaccinations.

Myth #5: The flu vaccine causes strong side effects

Facts: The side effects of the flu vaccine are generally mild. Some people may have soreness, redness or swelling where the shot was given, a low-grade fever or minor aches, but these issues are typically short-lived. The CDC stresses, because of how the vaccines are produced, you cannot get influenza from the flu shot or the nasal spray vaccine.

Myth #6: Getting the flu is not that serious

Facts: The flu illness can vary from mild to severe. When severe, it may result in hospitalization and even death. Reducing the risk of flu is especially important for these groups:

  • People who have certain medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes or chronic lung disease
  • People 65 and older
  • Pregnant women
  • Young children, especially those under 5 years old

Even for people outside of these groups, flu symptoms can disrupt work, school or social life for several weeks or more.

Now is the time to get a flu vaccine, which is considered preventive, and, in most cases, covered through employer-sponsored, individual, Medicare and Medicaid health plans. Vaccines are available through primary care physicians, convenience care clinics and most local pharmacies.

Prevent missing out on winter activities by getting caught up on vaccination.

How you can stay ahead of diabetes

2023-11-13T13:01:00

(BPT) – With diabetes on the rise, getting tested and establishing a healthy routine are more important than ever.

We’re facing a diabetes crisis in the United States. About 1 in 10 of us — nearly 37 million people — are living with diabetes, and another 96 million have prediabetes.[1] What’s more, 1 in 5 Americans with diabetes don’t know they have it.[2]

The high rate of diabetes in this country comes at a significant cost. If not well managed, diabetes can lead to many complications, including blindness, kidney failure, heart disease and more.[3] Diabetes also increases the risk of developing serious complications or being hospitalized with respiratory illnesses such as COVID-19 and the flu.[4],[5] People living with diabetes incur an average of $16,750 in medical expenses every year — more than double the typical cost of care for people without diabetes.[6]

Although these statistics can be daunting, the good news is there are many steps you can take to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes and avert the worst complications. And the first step is as simple as visiting your local Walgreens.

Diabetes Care at Walgreens

During Diabetes Awareness Month, Walgreens and its partners are offering free diabetes testing and complimentary education to help people know where they stand and take action to manage their condition. Head to participating locations throughout November to get a free A1C or blood glucose test. You can also tune into a virtual diabetes education session hosted by Village Medical Primary Care at Walgreens and receive complimentary education materials. Visit Walgreens.com/FreeDiabetesScreening to find participating locations.

Beyond Diabetes Awareness Month, pharmacists are a year-round resource for people living with or at risk of diabetes. Thousands of Walgreens pharmacists have undergone specialized diabetes training and can answer your questions and help you overcome hurdles in getting the care you need.

“While navigating diabetes can be complicated, the most important things you need to do are get tested regularly and develop a routine to manage your condition over time,” says Danielle James, PharmD, a Walgreens pharmacy manager in the Chicago area. “Your pharmacist can help you with both of those things, whether you have diabetes, prediabetes or an elevated risk for diabetes. This is the perfect time to start that conversation with your pharmacist.”

Testing and ongoing management look different for everyone, but they are both crucial to stay ahead of diabetes before it progresses or leads to complications. Here are the basics:

Testing

The American Diabetes Association recommends all adults ages 35 and older get screened for diabetes at least once every three years.[7] People living with diabetes also need to undergo regular testing to monitor their condition and adjust their care regimen as needed.

Blood sugar tests are the most common form of testing for diabetes, and there are several different types:

  • A1C testing measures your average blood sugar level over three months. This is the most common test to diagnose diabetes and monitor it over time to determine how well treatment is working.
  • Blood glucose testing measures your blood sugar at a single moment in time and can also be used to diagnose diabetes or determine your risk of developing it. For some blood glucose tests, you will need to fast overnight before your blood is drawn.
  • Blood sugar monitoring is typically performed at home by people living with diabetes to monitor and manage their condition daily. It can be done via finger pricks throughout the day or by wearing a device called a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), which measures blood glucose levels every few minutes.

Other important tests for people at risk for or living with diabetes include cholesterol and blood pressure tests, routine kidney screenings, and eye and foot exams.

Based on your condition, your Walgreens pharmacist can help you identify which types of testing you need and how often you need them.

Ongoing Management

Testing is just one piece of managing diabetes. Most people also need a routine that includes medications, lifestyle changes, and staying up to date on immunizations and other preventative health measures. Walgreens pharmacists are trained to help you with all of this. They can:

  • Teach you how to keep A1C and glucose levels on target and use testing tools such as CGMs and blood glucose meters
  • Share important information about your medications and help you stay on track with medications
  • Counsel you on managing your diet, physical activity and weight to improve health
  • Provide vaccinations for flu, COVID-19, RSV and other vaccine-preventable illnesses
  • Help you navigate insurance and find cost savings through tools such as Rx Savings Finder and Find Rx Coverage

“I encourage patients to take a holistic approach to managing diabetes because there are many factors that contribute to success,” says James. “Working with you and your doctor, we can help you make sense of all the information, adjustments and new habits you’ll need to embrace to keep your blood sugar in a healthy range and protect against complications. Together, we can help you develop and stick to a routine that will empower you to live your best life.”

Take the first step toward managing your diabetes or diabetes risk by visiting Walgreens. In addition to free testing and education, Walgreens is offering discounts throughout November on products to manage your diabetes. To stay protected against respiratory illnesses this winter, you can also schedule all your fall vaccinations during your visit at Walgreens.com/ScheduleVaccine.

Visit Walgreens.com/Diabetes (English) or Walgreens.com/DiabetesESP (Spanish) for more information on diabetes services at Walgreens during Diabetes Awareness Month and year-round.

Prepare your bathroom for holiday guests with 7 simple upgrades

2023-11-13T08:01:00

(BPT) – If you’re hosting guests this holiday season, there’s much to do to prepare. Decorating, baking, cooking and organizing entertainment are likely your priorities leading up to their arrival. However, don’t overlook a space that everyone will use multiple times a day: your bathroom!

Preparing your bathroom for guests is essential to making them feel welcome and comfortable, but you don’t have to completely renovate your bathroom. Instead, try these seven simple bathroom upgrades in prep for the holidays.

1. Mix textures to add visual appeal

Mixing textures, styles and colors for your bathroom’s décor is a simple but effective way to infuse your bathroom with warmth and character. Consider combining different materials like wood, glass and metals for visual appeal.

An easy way to do so is to switch out your bathroom’s hardware, such as cabinet handles and knobs, towel racks and shower curtain hooks. Don’t forget to incorporate opposing textures with soft towels, rugs and shower curtains for a cozy and luxurious atmosphere.

2. Wallpaper

You don’t have to paint your bathroom to change the color and look. Wallpaper is an affordable and easy way to freshen up your bathroom’s aesthetic while adding a touch of personality.

You can wallpaper the whole bathroom or focus on one accent wall. Look for patterned and/or textured wallpapers that draw the eye. Whether you use nature-inspired or bold modern patterns, wallpapering your bathroom is a simple upgrade and allows for future flexibility as trends change.

3. Upgrade sink faucet

A practical and visually appealing way to elevate your bathroom is to upgrade your bathroom sink faucet. Look for designs that complement your décor to enhance the space’s aesthetic appeal, but also improve your bathroom’s functionality.

The Stryke® Single Handle Pull-Down Bathroom Faucet is perfect for DIYers. This easy-to-install faucet makes quick work of cleaning toothpaste, dirt and small debris from your sink with a nimble pull-down spray wand, and is available in several finishes and features a subtly upturned spout and handles that radiate elegance.

Guests will appreciate the Delta MagnaTite® Docking, which uses a powerful integrated magnet to snap the faucet spray wand precisely into place, keeping it docked when not in use. The Lumicoat® Finish is also guaranteed to resist water spots and mineral buildup and easily wipes clean without the need for cleaners or chemicals, keeping your bathroom spotless, no matter how many people you’re entertaining!

4. Add a bidet

Adding a bidet is a convenient, thoughtful and hygienic improvement to your bathroom. It adds a sense of luxury, making guests feel pampered and elevating their bathroom experience.

You don’t have to install a whole separate system and fuss with plumbing. Modern bidet attachments and toilet seats are a simple and cost-effective way to bring this modern amenity to your bathroom. Take it to the next level by searching for bidets with adjustable water and temperature controls, heated seats and night lights.

5. Switch out your showerhead

Switching out your current showerhead with a newer model can transform showering from a daily necessity to a lavish, spa-like experience. Depending on the model, a new showerhead can easily remedy low water pressure. Paired with a handheld showerhead, it can even make cleaning the shower and tub easier than ever.

Perfect for a DIY upgrade, the Delta® ProClean 6-Setting Hand Shower is a powerful and practical addition to your shower. Guests will be impressed by the pause setting that gives them plenty of time for shaving, lathering and other shower tasks. They can easily restart the water with the same temperature as when they left off, providing a seamless showering experience while helping conserve water and most importantly, your hot water supply!

Best of all, this showerhead makes it easier to keep your shower and tile clean and reduce soap scum buildup with regular use, cleaning shower surfaces at least two times faster than standard sprays. The focused, ProCleanspray lets you easily clean hard-to-reach places without stepping in the shower.

6. Play around with lighting

You can adjust the mood and ambiance of your bathroom space by playing around with lighting. Create a relaxed atmosphere by installing adjustable lighting fixtures, like dimmer switches. Also, avoid bright white lighting. Focus on soft, warm colored LED lights for a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

Besides overhead lighting, think about adding night lights near the sink and toilet, if possible, so guests can find their way in the dark. This is especially helpful for holiday guests who may not be as familiar with your bathroom’s layout.

7. Improve storage

Improve or expand your bathroom storage to make it easy for you to stock and guests to access towels and toiletries. Look for space-efficient but well-organized cabinets to install. If you don’t have the space for a cabinet, you can easily install shelves and use stylish storage baskets to keep items organized and within reach.

These simple upgrades aren’t just for your guests. Think of these upgrades as holiday presents to yourself that you can enjoy year-round. Create a welcoming and comfortable bathroom space that your guests (and you) can appreciate this holiday season and beyond. Happy hosting!

5 tips for a healthier holiday season

2023-11-13T09:01:00

(BPT) – The holiday season is notorious for indulgent, heavy dishes that trade nutrition for taste. This year, however, we’re flipping the script by showcasing how to revamp classic recipes into healthier, yet equally scrumptious, options. By incorporating nutrient-dense ingredients, such as cauliflower, whole-grain bread, sweet potatoes and chopped vegetables, you can easily increase fiber and vitamins in your diet. Try these five swaps and enjoy your favorite holiday dishes with a healthier twist.

1. Swap out the spuds! One simple swap is trading starchy mashed potatoes for low-carb, vitamin-packed mashed cauliflower. Not only is cauliflower significantly lower in carbohydrates than potatoes, but it is also a great source of vitamin C, vitamin K and folate. The result is a creamy, delicious alternative to traditional mashed potatoes that will leave you feeling satisfied and nourished. It’s the perfect clean, healthy, grain-free and low-carb replacement for mashed potatoes. Our favorite mashed cauliflower to swap out for mashed potatoes is Kevin’s Natural Foods Mashed Cauliflower. It’s delicious, easy to prepare and only contains 8g of carbs per serving. Plus, it’s the perfect option for those following a low-carb or keto diet.

2. Upgrade your green bean casserole: Green bean casserole is a classic dish loved by many. However, the traditional recipe may not be the healthiest option since it usually involves canned soup and fried onions. Luckily, there are ways to make a healthier version of this beloved dish. One option is to use fresh green beans instead of canned ones. Fresh green beans are packed with nutrients and have a better texture than canned ones. Another way to make this dish healthier is to use homemade cream of mushroom soup. Homemade soup will have fewer preservatives and can be made with healthier ingredients. Additionally, you can swap the fried onions for crunchy almond slivers. By making these simple changes, you can transform the classic green bean casserole into a healthier and more nutritious dish that you can enjoy guilt-free.

3. Save time with ready-to-heat turkey gravy: Preparing a Thanksgiving feast can be a challenging task, especially when you have a long list of dishes to prepare. But with Kevin’s Natural Foods Turkey Gravy, you can save valuable time in the kitchen without compromising on taste or nutrition. Kevin’s ready-to-heat gravy is Certified Gluten-Free and made from only the finest, all-natural ingredients, eliminating the hassle of preparing a gravy from scratch. It’s the perfect complement to your turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing, making it a must-have for any holiday dinner. This delicious gravy is only available during the holiday season, so if you’re a true gravy enthusiast, we recommend buying a few extra and popping them in the freezer. That way, you can savor this delight all year round!

4. A healthier twist on sweet potatoes: Ditch the traditional marshmallow-filled sweet potatoes this year and try something new. If you don’t have much time to spare, pick up Kevin’s Natural Foods ready-to-heat Mashed Sweet Potatoes at your local grocery store. They are paleo-friendly, gluten-free and contain just five natural ingredients. This dish is a guaranteed hit with its creamy texture and natural sweetness, sure to keep the crowd coming back for seconds.

5. Stuffed with nutrients: One of the most popular holiday dishes is stuffing and it’s a great opportunity to include more fiber and nutrients into our meal. Instead of using white bread, try using whole-grain bread or even quinoa for a gluten-free option. Add in some chopped vegetables like carrots, celery, and onion for an extra boost of vitamins. To add some protein, mix in some cooked sausage or chopped nuts. And for a burst of flavor, add some dried cranberries or apricots. With these healthy swaps, we can enjoy a guilt-free and flavorful stuffing that will have everyone asking for seconds.

The holidays are a time to indulge, but that doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice our health and wellness. With these five healthy swaps, we can enjoy our favorite holiday dishes without feeling guilty. From cauliflower mashed potatoes to homemade green bean casserole and ready-to-heat turkey gravy, we can save time and still have a delicious feast. By incorporating more nutrient-dense ingredients into our dishes, like whole-grain bread, sweet potatoes, and chopped vegetables, we can add more fiber and vitamins to our plates. So this holiday season, let’s reinvent our classic recipes and create healthier, yet equally delicious versions.

3 key learnings from Chase for Business’ Make Your Move Summit to inspire business owners to make their next move in the year ahead

2023-11-13T08:01:00

(BPT) – More than three million small businesses were started in the first half of 2023, up nearly 6% from the first six months of 2022. While new business formation is thriving, business owners continue to face a number of challenges: Inflation (30%), hiring (17%), taxes (16%) and supply chain disruptions (16%) were all cited as top challenges for small business leaders in the Chase for Business’ Midyear Business Leaders Outlook survey.

“Business growth is strong and despite ongoing economic challenges, there’s plenty of opportunities for entrepreneurship across the country,” said Ben Walter, CEO of Chase for Business. “It’s important for business leaders to have a space to network and recognize their collective successes. It’s also equally important for them to find opportunities for continued education and moments of inspiration.”

To help entrepreneurs take on these challenges, Chase for Business held its inaugural Make Your Move Summit in Frisco, Texas from Nov. 1-3, bringing together more than 1,100 small business owners to provide them the tips and tools they need to move their business forward. The complimentary event gave attendees the opportunity to hear from notable speakers — like businessman and investor Mark Cuban, former WNBA MVP Sheryl Swoopes and Pro Football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith — enjoy educational breakout sessions and network with other local entrepreneurs.

Here are the three key takeaways from the Make Your Move Summit:

1. Happy Employees Lead to Happy Customers

Small business owners are still grappling with the tightest labor market in decades. They know engaged and committed employees are core to business survival — especially in today’s environment — with three in five (61%) business owners ranking keeping valued employees as the most important way to manage costs in an inflationary environment.

Bob Jordan, President & CEO of Southwest Airlines, shared the secret behind the airline’s oft-celebrated company culture, saying, “We start everything with our people. Happy people lead to happy customers.”

As that connection between healthy employees and happy customers has come into focus, business owners are responding with a renewed emphasis on establishing a positive company culture. They are focusing on mental health and stress management, with nearly 13% more business leaders reportedly offering mental health days since November 2022. More than half say they’ve tried to implement healthy habits to manage stress in their own lives.

2. Values are Hugely Important to New Age Consumers

While price is a major component of whether a purchase is made, consumers are increasingly paying more attention to the values of the businesses they choose to support. Business leaders recognize the importance of being purpose-driven, as 45% identified keeping their why top of mind as an important quality to cope with an inflationary environment.

Emma Grede, Serial Entrepreneur, CEO & Chairwoman of the Fifteen Percent Pledge, echoed that sentiment during her two sessions at the Make Your Move Summit. Appearing on behalf of Chase Ink, Grede talked to business owners about how she built her businesses by prioritizing accessibility and inclusivity, while also providing business owners with real-time feedback about understanding and articulating their why.

3. New Revenue Streams are Key to Combatting Inflation

Most business owners (70%) think rising costs are here to stay and recognize that combating inflation isn’t as simple as raising prices and cutting costs. In fact, they are finding new revenue streams and rethinking their brick-and-mortar strategy. More than one-third (36%) are reporting operations or sales outside of the United States, up from 28% last year. Similarly, the overall percentage of respondents who plan to add or increase physical locations due to growth rose 10% (45% in 2023 from 35% in 2022) while the percentage of respondents who plan to reduce their locations also increased from 15% in 2022 to 23% in the latest survey.

Several of the business leaders at the Make Your Move Summit highlighted the importance of transparency and authenticity, which was echoed by business leaders who cited honest and transparent communication with customers (58%) as the single most important quality needed to cope with the inflationary environment.

Chase for Business expects to host its second Make Your Move Summit in 2024. Visit chase.com/business for more information about the tools and resources available for business leaders, and to stay updated on the latest announcements surrounding next year’s Summit.

Game on: Sports can help level the playing field for women in business

2023-11-13T06:01:00

(BPT) – In the wake of an electrifying sports season with record-breaking viewership for the WNBA and landmark victories for women athletes globally, Deloitte released “The Impact of Sports on Women’s Professional Success,” new research that looks at the interplay between athletic experience and women’s professional accomplishments.

According to the survey, 85% of women who played sports say the skills they developed were important to success in their professional careers. With the women’s matches of the U.S. Open and the Women’s World Cup shattering viewership records, it’s an ideal time to take a look at the role sports can play in the development and success of women in business.

The intersection of sports and professional success

Sports can be a great training ground for the future. The research found that 91% of surveyed women in leadership roles attribute their success in business to their sports backgrounds.

The women surveyed said the skills they’ve developed playing sports include teamwork (69%) and leadership (41%), followed by managing stress and pressure (36%), problem-solving abilities (35%) and effective communication (34%).

And these skills aren’t just helping with home team victories, they’re setting women up to win in the workplace. The perceptions around the power of sports show an impressive 61% of all respondents agree that girls who engage in sports are likely to have successful careers.

Many roads lead to the top

Of course, playing sports is just one of many pathways where young girls can follow their interests and cultivate critical life skills. For instance, robotics or coding clubs may help sharpen abilities around logical reasoning and problem-solving, volunteer work can foster empathy, social awareness and the importance of giving back to one’s community, and the debate team and drama club may help with collaboration, confidence and public speaking.

The common thread, though, is the ability to gain the transferrable skills that are valued by many employers today.

The next generation of women leaders

The right environment to grow and develop new hobbies and skills could be integral to meeting current and future goals. When it comes to sports, clubs and activities, several factors, like an encouraging coach or motivational team captain, can make all the difference in one’s ability to excel.

Similarly, an empathetic and forward-thinking employer who champions women in the workplace can significantly impact opportunities for professional growth and development. An employer that values, empowers and intentionally invests in women professionals can help to create winning teams, leaders and companies.

Deloitte has fostered many firsts for women at work, starting in 1935 when Jennie Palen became the first woman to hold a managerial role at a lead accounting firm. She paved the way for all women professionals, as well as Deloitte’s first woman chair in 2003 and the first woman CEO of any Big Four organization in 2015. These are not just historical footnotes; they reflect a culture that is deeply committed to nurturing the professional growth of women.

“Deloitte has a longstanding history of supporting the advancement of women and we are proud of the invaluable contributions of the many women leaders in our organization. While progress has been made advancing women in society, we know there is more work to be done. Supporting the development of girls’ leadership skills throughout their youth will help prepare them to be our next generation of leaders,” said Jason Girzadas, CEO, Deloitte US.

Flourishing on and in your field

The data paints a vivid picture: sports can serve as a catalyst for women’s career success. And to increase the chances of winning the long game, a workplace that champions its women can help keep the momentum going and provide the environment to thrive.

The next time you walk past a school soccer field or see a flyer for the next coding competition, remember that these are more than just extracurriculars. They are foundational experiences, helping to shape the character and skill sets of the next generation of women leaders.

7 tips for navigating the college application journey

2023-11-13T05:01:00

(BPT) – With many moving parts and high stakes involved, it’s essential to approach college applications with a well-thought-out plan. From planning to budgeting to submitting your application, here are seven tips for navigating the typical college application process.

  1. Create a timeline for your college application. The college application journey requires meticulous planning and ample time for execution. When you begin applying, create a timeline with clear deadlines. This way, you’ll know when you need to finish each step and won’t get overwhelmed by the number of tasks ahead.
  2. Identify key milestones related to your applications. Some schools offer Early Decision or Early Action options, with different deadlines from the standard decision deadline. Set personal deadlines too for gathering recommendations, crafting your essays and submitting your transcripts. Leave room for hiccups too.
  3. Research your schools. Not all colleges are a perfect fit. That’s why it’s important to find a school that aligns with your academic, personal and career goals. Dive into what makes each institution unique and how it may line up with your values and interests. Explore their academic programs, extracurricular offerings, campus culture and location.
  4. Figure out your financial aid options. Note the cost of tuition as well as things like room and board, books and program fees. Look into whether the school offers scholarships, grants, financial aid or work-study opportunities. If you need additional funds to cover costs that federal student loans, scholarships and grants don’t cover, consider a private student loan from your trusted bank or credit union. Lenders like Navy Federal Credit Union, offer private student loans for a semester or the entire academic year up to the school-certified cost of attendance.
  5. Build a budget for your college applications. In most cases, there are costs involved, including school application fees, fees to send test scores and fees to send high school transcripts. Students and parents should identify a savings goal and set money aside just for the college application process. If you’re a low-income student, you may get waivers for both SAT/ACT testing and college applications. Military members and Veterans may also be eligible for application fee waivers. Ask your high school guidance counselor or college’s financial aid department if these waivers apply to you.
  6. Prepare your application to help you stand out. Colleges will look at your test scores and GPA, but they also want to know more about who you are as a student and professional. Extra application requirements, such as resumes and essays, showcase your skills and what makes you unique. Make sure you prepare for these important components of your college applications. This can also include passion projects, academic achievements and honors.
  7. Submit your application to the school. As your deadlines approach, double-check your applications for accuracy and ensure you have all the materials you need. For example, create a checklist that covers all your bases, such as proofreading your application, submitting test scores and paying any application fees. Once completed, submit your applications with confidence. Take pride in knowing you’ve put your best foot forward.

The college application process is an adventure, but with careful planning, you’ll find the perfect school that fits your goals for the future.

How today’s companies can encourage student engagement in STEM fields

2023-11-13T04:01:00

(BPT) – Did you know at least one quarter of today’s workers have occupations connected to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)? That equals approximately 35 million people, according to a National Science Foundation report from 2021. And the field keeps growing — while gradually becoming more diverse, although women and people of color are still underrepresented.

With the rapid evolution of technology in every aspect of life, from the Internet of Things and augmented reality to cloud computing, machine learning and AI, the need for more employees with STEM skills and knowledge is critical. U.S. companies face a workforce shortage crisis, especially those requiring a STEM background. Students from elementary school through higher education need encouragement to pursue these subjects to fill this dire need, and to help them ensure their own professional, personal and financial success in the future.

How companies benefit from involvement in education

Companies providing financial support, mentorships and creative approaches to engage students in STEM topics will reap the benefit of a better prepared future workforce. For example, State Farm Insurance has been a strong supporter of educational efforts for years, launching programs that bring the excitement of STEM learning to students nationwide.

The pervasiveness of technology today emphasizes how crucial STEM backgrounds are for a wide range of jobs — even those you may not think of as STEM related. Today’s insurance industry, for instance, involves detailed analysis of complex data which is supported using machine learning and AI, plus understanding the science behind weather, and being able to model trends and use satellite imagery to settle claims after a disaster. Skills in research and data analytics are crucial components in this field.

What State Farm is doing to encourage STEM education

To ensure that all students can excel at rigorous, relevant STEM learning and become successful employees in the future, State Farm has been building community relationships, engaging students in technology and providing mentoring opportunities to create awareness and excitement about IT careers.

One example of their many efforts is a recent weather balloon launch by State Farm Enterprise Technology mentors to send “Jake from State Farm” (in doll form) nearly 100,000 feet into space from the company’s park in Bloomington, Illinois. Participating students learned about the science behind meteorology and the tools used to predict and understand weather patterns.

The company has also initiated several programs encouraging girls and women to pursue STEM fields. Although women comprise nearly half the U.S. workforce, they only represent 27% of STEM workers, and are significantly underrepresented in STEM majors. To bridge this gap, State Farm supports groups and programs including:

Employee Resource Group (ERG) — Women and Technology provides technology and leadership-level connections, personal development and exposure for ERG members, connecting them with internal resources, role models and opportunities to build skills and develop professionally.

Educational Milestone — Girls Who Code offers an event at the State Farm Park Center in Atlanta office location, plus virtual opportunities, for girls to participate in a seven-week coding camp. Over 100 girls participated each summer over the last six years.

State Farm Tech Astra is an innovative program giving female students opportunities to explore the vast possibilities of STEM. For over a decade, State Farm has empowered more than 2,000 fifth through eighth grade girls to experience coding, robotic and engineering challenges in a safe, fun setting. Hundreds of State Farm employees volunteer time to support this program, which provides collaborative, inclusive events led by women and tailored to provide hands-on experiences in interactive small groups. The program recently expanded to include fifth through twelfth grade girls.

STEM Program in Schools — State Farm advocacy engages the community to promote IT in grades K-12 with local school districts. The company also provides charitable funds to support numerous STEM programs for young students run by colleges and universities.

Supporting STEM education can help provide a better future for students seeking high-paying, satisfying careers, and for businesses needing this talent to meet the demands of ever-evolving technology.
