Purchasing your first car? Here are 5 tips for first-time car buyers

2023-10-10T04:01:00

(BPT) – If you ask anyone you know about purchasing their first car, chances are they’ll be able to recount every detail (good or bad) about the car and the process of how they got those keys into their hands. Purchasing a car is oftentimes one of the first major decisions for young adults.

That said, car buying can be a daunting task, especially if you aren’t familiar with the process or are overwhelmed by the current auto market. Here are five tips to help you navigate getting behind the wheel of your new car with ease:

1. Take an in-depth look at your finances.

The sticker price of the car is not the only cost you should factor into your budget. Other costs, such as dealership and registration fees, insurance, taxes and just general maintenance, play a big part in your overall affordability of a vehicle. With all of this in mind, you can better figure out how much you’ll need to finance the vehicle. There are many tools online to help you get a clearer picture of your budget. For example, Navy Federal Credit Union has online calculators on its website to help members get a sense for what their monthly payments could be, compare loan terms and more.

2. Differentiate between your wants and needs.

With all of this in mind, you’ll need to list out your wants and needs in a vehicle. Create a list of non-negotiable items (e.g., number of seats, safety features, rear camera) and another list of nice-to-have features (e.g., keyless entry, navigation system, heated seats). Try to resist add-ons you weren’t already planning to get.

With so many vehicles and options to choose from, listing out must-haves and nice-to-haves can help you to avoid overspending while also making sure you get everything that you need out of the vehicle.

3. Look at funding options.

With the prices of both new and used vehicles on the rise, most people will need an auto loan. See what’s available in the market — comparing rates and financial options from a dealership and your trusted bank or credit union. Shop around to find the best rate possible. Financial institutions, such as Navy Federal, offer great rates and even pre-approved loans, so you can walk into a dealership with a check in hand just like a cash buyer. On top of that, getting pre-approved gives you more negotiating power since you’ll know exactly how much you can reasonably afford to pay each month for your vehicle.

4. Negotiate price before mentioning trade-in.

If you are looking to get a new car and have a vehicle to trade in, negotiate the selling price of the new car first. Don’t even mention to the dealer that you have a trade-in until after they draw up a buyer’s order for the new vehicle and you see everything you are paying for in total.

If you were to tell them about your trade-in, oftentimes dealers will pad the value of your trade-in to make you think you are getting a better deal than you really are. Then, they will adjust the sales price of the new car to be higher than if you didn’t have a trade-in. Make sure to negotiate each separately so one doesn’t have a negative influence over the other.

5. Doing your homework gives you purchasing power.

Before making any major financial decision, like buying a car, always do your research. Online resources can be helpful for determining a car’s value along with listing safety features and recalls and giving honest dealership reviews so that you have all the information available in your back pocket.

When you’re armed with expert knowledge and take the time to prepare, you position yourself to get the best deal possible.

Understanding the different kinds of health coverage that may be available to you

2023-10-09T14:15:00

(BPT) – When you are looking for a plan to cover your health care needs, and perhaps those of your loved ones, it can be confusing to know what your options are and what you might be eligible for. And there could be a lot of factors that come into play, such as how old you are, where you live and your level of income.

But the good news is, no matter your circumstances, there’s a health plan that can work for you. Access to affordable health care coverage is more attainable than you might think. If you have questions about the different types of coverage being offered and who might be eligible, here’s a quick guide to help.

Employer-based coverage: For the 54% of Americans with employer-provided coverage, many employers set aside a 2- to 3-week period between September and December when their employees can select health benefits for the following year. A lot can change in a year, so if you have employer-based coverage, consider whether your current benefits are still meeting you and your family’s needs and see what plan changes your employer has made in the options offered. If you are unsure about your options, check with your employer.

Medicare: This is a federal program that provides health insurance for people 65 years and older, with certain exceptions for those younger than 65. There are several types, or “parts” of Medicare.

  • Parts A (hospital insurance) and B (medical insurance) are considered Original Medicare.
  • Part C is what’s also known as Medicare Advantage and combines Parts A and B and usually includes prescription drug coverage. These plans often also offer additional benefits such as dental, vision and fitness.
  • Part D plans are stand-alone plans that help pay for prescription drugs. Part D plans may be added with Original Medicare and/or a Medicare supplement insurance plan, as well as with certain Medicare Advantage plans that don’t include prescription drug coverage.
  • Medicare supplement insurance plans, also known as Medigap plans, help pay some of the out-of-pocket costs not paid by Original Medicare.

For more information about Medicare, visit MedicareMadeClear.com.

Medicaid: This is a federal health insurance program that is managed by each state, so the eligibility requirements (such as income level) may differ from state to state. Medicaid plans can also provide access to care for pregnant women, children, eligible low-income adults and people with disabilities. Medicaid plans cover things like hospital stays, doctor visits, and nursing home care. Often it includes things like prescription drug coverage, dental care and more. Check with your state plan to find out if you’re eligible and what that specific plan covers. Or visit MedicaidHelper.com.

Dual Special Needs Plans: Some people are eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. In this case, they are also able to have what’s called a Dual Special Needs plan, or D-SNP. It combines features of both programs, but also can contain benefits that are exclusive to dual plans, such as credits for healthy food and help with utilities. These plans are administered by each state.

Other Special Needs Plans include:

  • Chronic Special Needs Plans (C-SNPs) for people living with severe or disabling chronic conditions
  • Institutional Special Needs Plans (I-SNPs) for people who live in a skilled nursing facility
  • Institutional-Equivalent Special Needs Plans (IE-SNPs) for people who live in a contracted assisted living facility and need the same kind of care as those who live in a skilled nursing facility

UnitedHealthcare Individual & Family ACA Marketplace plans: These plans are available on the Health Insurance Marketplace, also called the Exchange. This is where Affordable Care Act (ACA) health care plans are sold, offering affordable coverage, sometimes at low- to no-cost, for you and your family. These are health plans people can buy on their own. If you do not have health insurance through a job, Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), or another source, an Individual and Family Plan may be a good alternative for you. To learn about UnitedHealthcare’s Individual and Family Plans or to see if they’re available in your state, visit UHCExchange.com.

This time of year is when many people are choosing their health care coverage for the coming year. For people with coverage from their employer, open enrollment typically happens for two weeks sometime between September and December. Medicare members can enroll or make changes to coverage from Oct. 15-Dec. 7. Most selections made will take effect on Jan. 1.

How One Veteran’s Motto of ‘Never Quit’ Helped Him Through Prostate Cancer Treatment and Urinary Incontinence

2023-10-09T12:01:00

(BPT) – Steve Cooper, an 18-year military veteran and successful businessman, was 41 years old when he received a devastating diagnosis of stage four prostate cancer and was given just months to live. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in American men, behind skin cancer.[1] While prostate cancer is typically treated successfully when found early, Steve’s cancer was diagnosed in an advanced stage.[2]

“My personal motto is ‘Never Quit’ and after hearing about my prognosis, my training and discipline from years in the U.S. Army immediately kicked in,” said Steve. “I truly believe that keeping my focus on staying physically active helped me keep my mind off this disease and ultimately, get through treatment.”

Steve first underwent a prostatectomy — an operation to remove part or all of the prostate gland — followed by radiation, chemotherapy and anti-hormone therapy. While this approach led to Steve’s remission, in the years following his treatment he began to struggle with urinary incontinence. Men who have a prostatectomy experience bladder leakage in the first few weeks after their procedure, and about 10% report urinary incontinence to be a significant problem a year or more after their procedure.[3],[4]

As his bladder leakage worsened, Steve had to begin wearing adult diapers. Beyond feeling uncomfortable and embarrassed, he stopped many of the physical and daily activities that had defined his life up to that point.

“As devastating as my cancer diagnosis was, my struggle with bladder leakage was worse,” Steve recalled. “I wanted to be active, but I didn’t want to change in a locker room anymore. I stopped dating because of the embarrassment of wearing diapers. My life was falling apart.”

Steve realized he needed to do something to regain control of his life and spoke with his doctor about his options. Together they decided on an implantable device called the AMS 800™ Artificial Urinary Sphincter (AUS). The AMS 800 AUS is entirely contained within the body. A cuff gently squeezes the urethra closed and prevents urine leakage.[5]

Soon after having the artificial urinary sphincter implanted, he was able to ditch the diapers. For Steve, it was like a weight had been lifted. He was able to feel like himself again without the constant fear of bladder leakage. Steve began dating again, met his future wife, and even competed in a half Ironman race in Hawaii nearly two years following the procedure.

“It’s sometimes hard for people to understand the impact of incontinence on so many aspects of daily life if they haven’t experienced it themselves,” Steve shared. “I find myself telling people that the day I married my wife was the best day of my life, but the day I received my implant was a close second!”

Several years later, Steve remains active and is cancer-free. His current mission is to help veterans receive the care and benefits they’ve earned and raise awareness about prostate cancer treatment and its side effects, including urinary incontinence.

As with any medical procedure, there are risks and benefits involved with the AMS 800 AUS, and it’s important for patients to talk with their doctor to determine an appropriate treatment approach for them. To learn more about the AMS 800 AUS, visit www.FixIncontinence.com/AMS800.

Some risks include, but are not limited to, device malfunction or failure, which may require revision surgery, wearing away/loss of tissue (device/tissue erosion), inability to urinate (urinary retention), infection and postoperative pain.[5] Safety information, as well as a complete list of potential side effects associated with the AMS 800 AUS, can be found online at: www.FixIncontinence.com/risks.

Stay on the lookout for spooky pests this season: A homeowner’s guide

2023-10-09T09:03:00

(BPT) – Fall is a widely adored season — with pumpkin-themed drinks and treats, apple orchard visits, trick or treating and spooky haunted houses, it’s safe to say fall is full of festivities!

Unfortunately, fall isn’t all fun and games. Dropping temperatures and fresh foliage on the ground create a perfect environment for spooky critters. According to a new survey, nearly half of Americans experience increased bugs and pests in their home during the autumn and winter seasons. Contrary to what 48% of Americans believe, even a clean home isn’t pest-proof, which means there may be unwanted visitors lurking just out of sight.

In preparation for “spooky season,” TruGreen®, the nation’s leading lawn care provider whose services also include pest control, compiled a list of bugs and pests that homeowners should look out for to protect their homes from these unwanted visitors.

Beware of these spooky critters

Although bugs are mostly harmless, encountering them indoors can be scary — and not in a fun way. TruGreen’s survey found that the most common pests homeowners find inside and out of the home are beetles, centipedes and cockroaches. Surprisingly, despite the widely believed myth that people swallow eight spiders in their lifetime, spiders aren’t as feared as other bugs and pests. But, they can still be a problematic pest for homeowners.

3 steps you can take to prevent any extra scares

To prevent your home from becoming a real-life horror story, take these steps to prepare and protect your home from unwanted bugs and pests this spooky season:

  1. Check for cracks and openings outside your home. To prevent bugs and other pests from entering your home, make sure to close any openings that you spot on your home’s exterior. Pests can take shelter in the warmth of your home by sneaking through cracks around entryways, windows and doors. Consider a professional service like TruGreen’s Perimeter Pest Control that guards your home against unwanted critters and helps keep them out.
  1. Be mindful of your “spooky season” lawn décor. It’s important to note that some Halloween décor choices may attract pests to your yard and home. Take precautionary action by choosing lightweight décor items, moving your decorations around throughout the season, or placing them on the patio instead of on the grass to prevent pests or lawn damage. If you decide to scatter real pumpkins around your outdoor space, make sure to place them in a cool, dry area to prevent mold and rot — both of which serve as welcome signs for pests. Similarly, be sure to keep your lawn and decorations as dry as possible since standing water can attract unwanted bugs.
  1. Don’t be afraid to call a professional. If you encounter unwanted pests this season, you don’t have to waste your valuable time trying to scare them off by yourself. Professional experience and resources can prevent unexpected scares from bugs and pests in your home, so that you can focus on enjoying autumn.

Just call or buy online to get TruGreen’s experts to help maintain your outdoor living space for a spooky, fun, and worry-free spooky season.

It’s almost game time: 5 tips for a winning tailgate party

2023-10-09T07:31:00

(BPT) – Your favorite time of year — football season! — has finally arrived, and it’s time to huddle up and get ready for your best-ever tailgate party. No matter how well your favorite team does this year, you can count on having a blast if you follow these tips to enjoy all the pre-game action with your family and friends.

1. Tighten up your game plan

While it may sound fun to just get everyone together and fly by the seat of your pants, the truth is a good game plan goes a long way to ensuring everyone has an epic time. Well before the big day, spend some time checking items like:

  • The weather forecast: This can help you not only decide how many layers you might need to wear, but also whether to pack extra ice and cold drinks or some thermoses of hot cider and cocoa!
  • Stadium rules: Make sure you know the rules and regulations, and share them with your team. Know what’s permitted to bring to the venue, how early you can arrive before the game (the earlier, the better!) — and scope out a parking lot map to pick some prime real estate, ideally with a little shade.
  • Draft players: Assign friends to help out by bringing more food, ice, coolers, extra napkins and wipes, plastic bags, etc. — as long as people know their assignments, you’ll have enough of everything you need.
  • Your lineup: Counting how many people are coming can help you make decisions about food and drink quantities, plus the right amounts of plates, cups and silverware.

2. Satisfy their appetites

You can make it super easy for yourself — and please the whole crew — by putting HORMEL GATHERINGS® Party Trays at the top of your tailgate party shopping list. Whether you choose the Honey Ham and Turkey Party Tray or the Hard Salami and Pepperoni Party Tray, you’ll have the most convenient collection of tasty, satisfying snacks to please everyone at your tailgate party. HORMEL GATHERINGS® Trays are versatile and delicious for any occasion, and they’re made with premium meats and cheeses the whole gang will love.

Even better, they’re the epitome of easy entertaining, because they’re ready to eat and easy to serve, requiring no cooking, cutting or assembling — just open a tray and enjoy. You can pair them with your favorite bread, fruits, veggies, dips or sauces to create endless combinations. They’re also available in different sizes and varieties to suit different needs and preferences. From small snack trays to large party trays, from classic meat and cheese trays to supreme trays with olives — packing a few of these in your tailgate cooler will guarantee your day is a hit.

3. Quench their thirst

Be sure you pack your cooler with plenty of cold drinks for your guests — including enough non-alcoholic options to keep everyone well hydrated, and for your designated drivers. Careful cooler packing can ensure you have enough for everyone. Remember to fill a thermos or two of hot drinks if the temps are getting chilly.

4. Bring on the fun and games

Include plenty of fun activities for everyone to enjoy during your shindig. You can bring along classic yard games like beanbag toss and horseshoes (or make up your own!), plus face-painting supplies for the diehard fans, a football or two to throw around, upbeat music to jam to — and some portable outdoor seating for when people need to chill and relax.

5. Leave time for cleanup

Make sure you have enough time for cleaning everything up before kickoff time. Bringing plenty of trash bags along and assigning team members for the assist will make cleanup a breeze — so you’re ready to go and enjoy the game!

Before your next tailgate party, family get-together — or just to have on hand in case friends drop by — check out the tasty possibilities at Hormel.com.

Elevate your virtual learning: 4 powerful tips to thrive in the world of online high school

2023-10-09T05:01:00

(BPT) – Online learning has been around for a while, but, since the pandemic, more and more families have shifted to this educational model. The flexibility that online learning provides for busy families is appealing to many, but it isn’t a fit for all students.

“People were aware of online learning before, but the pandemic forced many to embrace it,” said Dr. Rafe Mazzeo, Ph.D., a professor of mathematics at Stanford University. “A lesson I learned during that time is that, not only do the teachers have to be very well prepared to teach online, but the students have to buy into the idea of learning online too.”

When middle and high schoolers are invested in their education, an online program can give them opportunities they may not otherwise be able to access in a traditional brick-and-mortar school, and allow them to thrive in ways in-person learning falls short.

If you and your child are considering switching to an online program, it’s important to know what’s needed to succeed. Stanford Online High School, founded in 2006, has been teaching students virtually for almost two decades, and understands online education’s unique benefits and challenges. Here are the school’s four essential tips for students to make the most of their online learning experience.

1. Establish a routine

One of the enticing aspects of online high schools is flexibility. Online schooling programs with synchronous (or real-time) classes offer a more flexible schedule than traditional in-person schooling. However, if your student struggles without structure, online school may not be the best learning environment.

Help your child succeed by working with them to establish a daily routine that balances class time, study sessions, extracurricular activities, socializing, and downtime. Creating and sticking to a consistent routine will help your middle or high schoolers better manage their time, stay organized, decrease stress, and reduce their risk of falling behind.

2. Create a dedicated learning workstation

Just because students can take class from their bed, couch, dining room table, or kitchen counter doesn’t mean that they should. Having a dedicated learning space in your home that is used only for attending online classes and studying is essential to thrive in an online educational program.

Collaborate with your student to create a comfortable workstation that is free of distractions and has the necessary supplies to do their work. Establishing a study space will help your student get into a focused mindset so they can excel in their classes.

3. Stay organized

In-person and online learning both require your student to practice excellent organizational skills to succeed. Staying organized can also curb procrastination and reduce stress.

Whether your middle or high schooler prefers digital tools, paper planners, or a combination of both, ensure they have the necessary materials and apps to set them up for success. Help them choose calendars, notebooks, or digital platforms that can help them take notes and keep track of class schedules, assignments, and due dates.

4. Actively engage in class

It’s not enough to simply attend online classes. It is crucial that your student is actively participating in class. Active engagement enhances your student’s understanding of the material, and can help them feel more connected to their school’s community while in a virtual environment.

Encourage your student to make the most of their time in class and take advantage of opportunities to meet with their teachers. If they are confused with a topic or need extra support, encourage them to reach out to their teachers for guidance.

Joining a worldwide educational community

In addition to students and parents investing time and discipline, it is important to find an online educational program built to give your student the best experience possible. When searching for an online school, consider Stanford Online High School, the leader in online education since 2006.

At Stanford Online High School, students in grades 7-12 learn the essential skills to become global citizens and make lasting connections with other students around the world. Following a traditional August-June academic year, students may attend full-time and seek a high school diploma, or enroll in just one or two courses.

The coursework challenges students at every level, as they learn from instructors with expertise in their fields of teaching. Students engage with their instructors and peers in synchronous class sessions, and participate in over 100 clubs, local meetups with classmates, and other school activities. One winemaker’s journey to creating a bold wine with a rich history

2023-10-08T09:01:00

(BPT) – Growing up in the heart of Napa Valley, Laura Orozco is intimately familiar with what makes a great wine. In fact, it’s in her blood. “My family is originally from Mexico,” said Orozco. “My father came to the U.S. in the early ’70s to work in the vineyards and follow the ‘golden path’ to give us a better future.”

Orozco’s father broke his back working in the vineyards; however, that didn’t stop him from pursuing his dream. His dedication and love for wine is evident in his daughter’s work.

Following the golden path

For nine years, Orozco has worked as the assistant winemaker at Chimney Rock Winery, a world-class winery led by Elizabeth Vianna, who took Orozco under her wing. Orozco’s reputation and passion for producing high-quality cabernet sauvignon caught the attention of Bill Terlato, President and CEO of Terlato Wine Group, who invited her to lead the winemaking functions for this new brand, Paso D’Oro.

Paso-D’Oro is the Spanish phrase for “way of gold,” which pays tribute to Orozco’s family journey. The name also evokes the California sunshine that paints the golden hills and valleys of the Paso Robles landscape and represents the people drawn to the Golden State.

This appointment is an honor for any winemaker, but especially a Latina winemaker like Orozco. According to Travel + Leisure Magazine, only 14% of California wineries are led by women, although that number is growing. Although the odds were stacked against her, Orozco followed her father’s golden path and created a bold new cabernet sauvignon with grapes grown in Paso Robles, California.

A trendy region for fine wines

Situated between Los Angeles and San Francisco on California’s central coast, USA Today named Paso Robles the best U.S. wine region in 2023, and it’s not hard to see why. According to Wine Tourism, this trendy wine region is responsible for more than 35% of all wine production in California. It’s become a new hub of wine tourism and has drawn many talented winemakers like Orozco.

The region’s warm, dry climate and fertile soil allow many grape varietals to thrive, including syrah, zinfandel, chardonnay, pinot noir and — most notably — cabernet sauvignon. Orozco has worked hard to secure fruit from some of the best vineyards in Paso Robles and carefully select plots that consistently grow grapes to produce a luxury cabernet sauvignon.

Orozco said the region’s hills and valleys remind her of the ups and downs everyone faces in life. Paso D’Oro’s evocative cobalt and gold packaging pays homage to these pastoral hills and includes an artistic topographical rendering of the American Viticultural Area (AVA).

Paso-D’Oro’s inaugural vintage is bold, approachable and balanced, with pure layers of red fruit and hints of warm spice. The wine received high praise from Wine Enthusiast Magazine and was highlighted as an Editor’s Choice wine in its first year on the market. This cabernet delivers the same luxury as an expensive wine from Napa or Sonoma at an affordable suggested retail price of $29.

Orozco believes this wine is suitable for any occasion. “You can drink it with your friends and family over dinner or serve it at a wedding. No matter when or where you drink it, I hope you find joy.”

Harnessing the power of age: 5 key benefits of hiring older workers

2023-10-06T16:05:00

(BPT) – By Gary A. Officer, President and CEO of the Center for Workforce Inclusion

When you think of new hires, who do you picture? While you may expect applicants to be 20-somethings straight out of college or 30- to 40-somethings making a career change, in reality, you’ll likely see more applicants who are older adults. According to a report by the U.S. Special Committee on Aging, workers 55 and older will soon represent 25% of our nation’s workforce.

However, just because more older adults are applying for jobs doesn’t mean they are getting hired. Many older applicants face ageism during the hiring process. A survey by AARP found that it took older workers who were displaced during the Great Recession twice as long to find a new job than younger workers. The association also found that only 4% of firms have committed to programs that help integrate older workers into their talent pool.

Businesses that ignore this fast-growing workforce segment need to rethink their hiring process. With record-low unemployment numbers, many job openings across industries still need to be filled. But there is a mostly overlooked talent pool readily available — older Americans. Now more than ever, businesses must recognize that older workers bring much-needed experience, emotional intelligence and generational diversity to our workplaces.

Not convinced? Here are five key values older workers offer employers.

1. Problem-Solving abilities

Problem-solving is a critical skill that is attained over time. Through their lived experience in the workforce, older workers have accumulated a wealth of industry-specific knowledge that they can use to make informed decisions that help your business thrive. More importantly, they can impart this knowledge to younger colleagues, providing mentorship opportunities that benefit the mentors, mentees and the business as a whole.

The result is a more innovative team. A 2018 study by Cloverpop found that multigenerational teams with an age range of 25 years or more (from the youngest member to the oldest member) met or exceeded expectations 73% of the time, while those with a narrow range of less than 10 years did so only 35% of the time.

2. Reliability

Older workers are incredibly reliable. This usually means that they are known for punctuality and dependability. You can count on them to show up on time to meetings, meet strict deadlines and provide a consistency that may be missing from your workplace. Best of all, they set a positive example for the rest of the company.

3. Improved team productivity

It’s been reported that seven out of 10 workers in the United States enjoy working with people from other generations. Older workers appreciate the creativity of younger workers and younger workers appreciate the value of older workers’ experience and wisdom (AARP).

These benefits extend beyond workplace satisfaction, too. Significant profitability and performance gains have been reported for companies that have above-average diversity. For example, according to an AARP report, companies with above-average diversity in age, gender, nationality, career path, industry background and education on their management teams report innovation revenue that is 19% higher and profit margins that are 9% higher than companies with below-average diversity.

4. Adaptability

Older adults have seen technology rapidly change throughout their lifetime. Contrary to popular belief, older workers are adaptable and willing to learn and master new skills and technologies.

The fact is that they’ve had to adapt quickly to keep pace with the increasingly connected and technology-forward world. These experiences have taught them to effectively navigate change, a valuable asset for businesses across many industries.

5. Low turnover

Hiring and training new employees can cost a company extensive time, money and resources. To reduce turnovers and increase employee retention, businesses should look to hire older workers.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that older workers ages 55-64 have a higher employee tenure rate than their younger colleagues. They typically stay with a company for nearly 10 years, more than three times the rate of workers ages 25-34.

So, while the assumption might be that an older applicant is ready to retire — that is likely not the case. Many older Americans are delaying retirement, unretiring or simply unable to retire and are prepared to stay on board for many years to come.

Age is a value-add, not a detriment

While working for the Center for Workforce Inclusion, I’ve seen firsthand the benefits of hiring older employees. Embracing age diversity in your workforce can only help to improve your company’s overall performance and workplace culture.

We often partner with businesses to help them tap into the talent pool of older workers to achieve successful business outcomes. We also work directly with older job seekers to overcome barriers to employment, develop in-demand skills and secure employment. “The BuzzRx team is thrilled to be celebrating 10 years of granting wishes through our partnership with Make-A-Wish,” said Matthew Herfield, BuzzRx Chairman and CEO. “From day one, our company has wholeheartedly embraced its mission to spread hope, strength, and joy to children fighting life-threatening illnesses, and our passion for this cause has only grown stronger over time.”

Making a difference, one kid at a time

The BuzzRx team is extremely passionate about giving back to Make-A-Wish and believes wholeheartedly in the power of a wish. Here are just a few wishes the company has made possible.

Christian, a 9-year-old from Chicago, was diagnosed with a congenital heart condition when he was just a baby. Since then, he endured several surgeries and today is feeling good thanks to his supportive relatives, close monitoring of his condition, and daily medication. For Christian’s wish, he wanted to be a superhero, just like his favorite comic book character. In 2017, with sponsorship from BuzzRx, Make-A-Wish made his dream a reality! Christian helped save Chicago from “the bad guys” through a series of heroic actions across the city, and even had his own police escort!

In 2016, 5-year-old Wyatt was diagnosed with leukemia and underwent countless medical appointments, hospital stays, and chemotherapy sessions. “It’s been a tough time, but he’s such a strong little boy,” said Brittany, Wyatt’s Mom. In 2017, Make-A-Wish and BuzzRx granted Wyatt’s wish in West Melbourne, Florida. Wyatt’s heartwarming wish was to be an ice cream man so he could share his love for ice cream with his friends and family.

Audrey, a 12-year-old living in Arizona, has a passion for fashion! Her nervous system disorder and daily seizures caused by a stroke at birth didn’t stop her from pursuing her interest in fashion. When she learned she was eligible for a wish, Audrey knew exactly what she wanted. “I wish to wear a fancy, poufy dress and have my photos taken with my hair and makeup done just like the models in fashion magazines.” In 2021, BuzzRx sponsored Audrey’s wish, and she was able to realize her dream of having a fashion photoshoot.

In 2020, 2-year-old Lydia was diagnosed with retinoblastoma and endured countless rounds of chemotherapy and eye surgeries. 4-year-old Lydia’s greatest wish was to meet giraffes “at their house.” BuzzRx and Make-A-Wish made it possible for her to visit Animal Adventure Park in upstate New York, where she enjoyed personalized behind-the-scenes tours and experiences, including feeding giraffes!

These are just a few of the many wishes BuzzRx has made possible over the last decade through its partnership with Make-A-Wish. In celebration of 10 years of granting wishes, during the 10th month of the year, BuzzRx will donate $1 for every app download, up to $10,000.

“The promise of a wish can be transformative for a child with a critical illness,” said Leslie Motter, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish America. “When a wish comes true, it gives kids like Audrey the strength to fight and even overcome their illness. We’re grateful to celebrate ten years of partnership with BuzzRx to help more children reclaim their childhood and believe in brighter days ahead.”

The free BuzzRx card and coupons can help you save up to 80% on prescription medications at over 60,000 pharmacies nationwide and make more wishes come true. This October, download the free BuzzRx app to help grant more wishes for wish kids—the company will donate $1 to Make-A-Wish at no cost to you. To learn more, visit BuzzRx.com/wish.

With fentanyl fears rising in schools nationwide, leading organizations team up to raise awareness of prescription drug safety

(BPT) – New digital curriculum to guide teachers and educate youth about dangers of misusing prescription medication

Prescription Drug Safety: Know the truth, a free digital school curriculum released in September 2023, is aiming to educate youth about the dangers associated with misusing prescription drug medications, including counterfeit drugs containing fentanyl. The course from the nationally recognized, evidence-based youth tobacco and opioid prevention truth® campaign and EVERFI® from Blackbaud®, the leader in powering social impact through education, aims to equip students with essential knowledge to protect themselves and others from the risks associated with both prescription drug misuse and fentanyl.

Overdose deaths by counterfeit pills more than doubled from 2019 to 2021, and over half of the people who died were age 35 or younger, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid, was involved in 84% of the more than 2,200 cases of reported adolescent drug overdose deaths that occurred during that same time span. Young Americans are especially vulnerable to misunderstanding the risks associated with opioid misuse, addiction, and the dangerous spiral down from prescription to illicit use. Schools play an important role in reaching students with the facts they need to make informed choices, and middle and high school educators are increasingly focused on facing the growing crisis.

“With fentanyl-related deaths rising at an alarming rate amongst teens, proper education to raise awareness about the prevalence of counterfeit fentanyl pills, the potential for accidental overdose, and the importance of avoiding experimentation with illicit substances altogether is critical,” said Ray Martinez, President and co-founder of EVERFI. “It has never been more urgent or important that we provide resources to students around this topic so we can gain the upper hand in fighting the opioid crisis.”

Course expected to reach 250,000 students nationwide this school year

Prescription Drug Safety: Know the truth is an expansion of the free digital course that has already reached more than one million learners nationwide since launching in 2017. Two new lessons address the proliferation of counterfeit pills and drug trafficking on social media platforms, guiding students on how to keep themselves safe in such situations and how to report social media drug trafficking. Through real-world scenarios delivered in truth’s authentic peer-to-peer voice, students can better understand the growing youth fentanyl crisis and how to support others in situations involving prescription drug misuse and overdose. The curriculum is expected to reach 250,000 middle and high school students nationwide during the 2023-24 school year.

The refreshed course also includes updates to the program’s look and feel, provides current research into prescription drug misuse, and complies with the latest Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. In consultation with educators, these updates will improve course content and provide students with the tools needed to make informed decisions, seek help for themselves or a peer, and understand the potential consequences of prescription drug misuse.

“Our organization brings years of expertise in developing youth-facing public health messaging, and we’re honored to put those efforts towards addressing the urgent fentanyl and prescription drug misuse crisis affecting young people across the nation at alarming rates,” said Amy Taylor, Chief of Community Engagement of Truth Initiative, the organization behind truth. “Building on our evidence-based ‘Vaping: Know the truth’ curriculum, which has already been used by nearly one million students to date, we’re excited to see ‘Prescription Drug Safety: Know the truth’ have a similar impact.”

A recent study of Prescription Drug Safety: Know the truth showed strong evidence that this type of digital curriculum showed a positive impact on behavioral intent and attitudes as it relates to prescription drug use across all genders, races, and other demographic characteristics.

Campaign proven to increase knowledge about opioid misuse

This marks the second collaboration between Truth Initiative and EVERFI following the Vaping: Know the truth curriculum, which provides students with facts on the health risks of e-cigarettes and nicotine use. It also offers resources to help young people who are currently using e-cigarettes to quit through truth’s first-of-its-kind text message quit vaping program, This is Quitting, which has inspired more than 644,000 youth and young adults to quit vaping nicotine. Since the curriculum’s launch, a total of 800,000 students have actively engaged with the course, and it is being used by more than 9,000 schools nationwide. Peer-reviewed research shows that Vaping: Know the truth significantly improved middle and high school students’ knowledge about e-cigarettes, and beginning in January 2024, the curriculum will include a module on cannabis vapes.

Using its proven-successful tobacco prevention strategy — giving young people the facts and empowering them to make their own decisions — Truth Initiative developed the Emmy Award-winning The Truth About Opioids campaign, which effectively increased knowledge about opioid misuse, decreased stigma, and increased the likelihood to seek out and share information in young people. Published findings studying the campaign’s effectiveness underscore the importance of public education and prevention — alongside emergency response, treatment, and recovery — in the comprehensive effort to combat the crisis.

“Given the devastating consequences of the opioid epidemic,” wrote the authors of the study, “now is the time to mount a comprehensive prevention effort to help reduce opioid misuse among young people.”
