Are all sugars created equal? New study shows maple syrup is the smarter sweetener

2025-02-27T07:01:00

(BPT) – As many people watch their sugar intake these days, it’s more important than ever to find ways to satisfy your sweet tooth using the healthiest source possible. While the USDA’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend limiting adding sugars to less than 10% of your total daily calories, the recommendations don’t differentiate where those sugars come from. And it turns out the source of sweetness can really make a difference for your health.

Clinical trial finds health benefits from pure maple syrup

Not all sources of sugar are in fact the same. A new study published in The Journal of Nutrition* is the first placebo-controlled clinical trial exploring the potential health benefits of maple syrup in humans due to maple’s micronutrients and polyphenols. Polyphenols are a category of compounds that are found in many plants.

The study found that substituting just 2 tablespoons of pure maple syrup for refined sugars reduced several cardiometabolic risk factors in humans, which could help prevent metabolic disease. When you have metabolic disease, that indicates you have an important risk factor for some of the most common and deadly conditions, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Cardiometabolic risk factors observed in the study included lowering blood sugar and blood pressure, reducing visceral abdominal fat (android fat reduction) and increasing beneficial gut bacteria.

“Although maple syrup is a source of sugar, which you should still limit in your diet, it’s a smarter sweetener,” said Sports and Media Dietitian Sarah Alsing, MS, RD; consultant to Maple from Canada and owner of Delightfully Fueled. “Beyond simply providing carbohydrates like other sugar sources, maple syrup also contains vitamins, minerals, amino acids and polyphenols. These micronutrients and polyphenols in pure maple syrup have now been shown to benefit blood sugar control, blood pressure, visceral fat mass (android fat reduction) and gut health. That’s pretty good motivation to change where you get your sugar.”

How to make the swap

Most dietary changes can seem overwhelming, but replacing refined sugar with pure maple syrup is an easy substitution anyone can make that still provides the sweetness you want, but also offers major health benefits.

Here are just a few of the many simple swaps you can make in everyday eating to substitute maple syrup for refined sugars:

  • Sweeten plain yogurt with maple syrup
  • Add maple syrup to sweeten coffee
  • Mix maple syrup in your morning oatmeal
  • Use maple syrup in place of sugar in baking recipes

“I love sweetening my oatmeal and plain Greek yogurt with maple syrup,” added Alsing, “and maple syrup can be easily used in a variety of savory as well as sweet recipes.”

You can feel even better about using unrefined, unprocessed pure maple syrup from Canada because it comes from trees, not factories. Canadian maple syrup is ideal for brunches, baking and barbecues, imparting the unique flavor of Canada’s iconic ingredient into a multitude of dishes — free from artificial additives or flavorings.

Rebuilding Lives: Supporting Customers in the Aftermath of Wildfires

2025-02-26T10:01:00

(BPT) – As the smoke from the January 2025 Southern California wildfires cleared, widespread destruction and damage slowly came into view. Thousands of residents suffered the loss of their homes and communities, including many State Farm customers. As firefighters and emergency responders worked to extinguish the fires, State Farm Catastrophe Response Team® members also deployed from across the country to help residents begin recovery in the aftermath of the fires.

“Californians truly are a resilient group of people,” reflects Troi McClure on her time spent with California customers facing the aftermath of the wildfires that ravaged the state. As a member of the State Farm Catastrophe Response Team, McClure’s time on-the-ground with California residents has left her with a deep admiration for their resilience and ability to recover and rebuild.

More than a house

Having just experienced the loss of her own grandmother’s home in Hurricane Helene, McClure’s personal understanding and compassion for customers comes through in her work. “It’s more than a house; it’s also about all the memories,” she said.

McClure is one of thousands keeping the State Farm® promise to California customers as part of the largest catastrophe response claims force in the industry. The catastrophe response team includes a dedicated, mobile workforce, specially trained to handle catastrophe claims and prepared to go anywhere in the country. The State Farm response also includes local agents who live and work in these same neighborhoods as our customers, and they are joined by thousands of employees across the country virtually helping answer questions and file claims.

The extra mile

Being a good neighbor in times of catastrophe often means going the extra mile. Christine Romero, a dedicated member of the State Farm Catastrophe Response Team for nearly two years, embarked on a 2,700-mile deployment from Virginia Beach to California in her cargo van. During a visit to Altadena to assess a claim, Romero witnessed firsthand the neighborhood’s devastation.

“It’s so important to stay focused on how we can help our customers, and that they know we’re here to help them recover,” said Romero. “That’s the promise we made to them.” This unwavering commitment keeps her grounded and determined to support customers through these challenging times. Over the past 18 months, Romero has responded to several nationwide catastrophes, always with the same goal in mind.

For team member Jackie Miller, going the extra mile included a 30-mile trip to return a medal found during a home inspection in the aftermath of the wildfires. When Miller made sure the medal was returned to its rightful owner, she learned it was given to the customer by former President Bill Clinton. That customer said Miller’s extra effort and caring demeanor tempered the stress recovering from the wildfire.

Making connections

Response team member Julia Washington welcomed the chance to help a California customer who is a U.S. Navy veteran in his 80s, making a real connection with him as they talked on the phone.

“He cried and said he felt like a ship at sea with no land in sight, but with this call he felt like he was being guided to land and safety,” said Washington. “He and I spoke for quite a while as I handled his homeowners claim and his rental claim. He said my humor and compassion made him forget his troubles, dried his tears, and made him laugh for the first time in days.”

These genuine connections help both the customer who is trying to recover and the team members who hear countless stories of heartbreak, destruction, and devastation.

On her sixth deployment, 28-year State Farm Claim Specialist Deyette Gardner connected with a customer while working at one of the State Farm Catastrophe Customer Care Sites set up in the impacted areas to offer face-to-face help with claims. Deyette walked the customer through the claims process, answered questions and provided the customer with an advance payment. The next morning, the customer returned with balloons and a card, and shouts of praise for Deyette — prompting applause, cheers, smiles, and tears throughout the Customer Care Site.

“As claim specialists, we offer empathy and understanding to customers during a difficult time,” Gardner said. “It’s natural to get emotional. The customer’s visit made me feel appreciated and valued.”

Ongoing challenges in California

“The great work of our frontline catastrophe claim team during the California wildfires reveals the very core of our mission to serve our customers and help them recover from the largest fire event we have ever experienced,” said Wensley Herbert, Senior Vice President — Property & Casualty Claims. In L.A. County alone, State Farm insures 250,000 homes and 880,000 automobiles. Across the state, State Farm Companies continue to insure over 1 million homes and over 4 million autos — representing billions in risk across the state.

This year’s wildfires highlight the personal suffering of residents and the overall difficulties facing the state and the insurance industry in the region. Historic increases in claim costs due to rising incidents and larger areas of wildfires, inflation, supply chain disruptions, plus labor and materials costs all mean higher home repair and rebuilding costs. There is also increasing exposure as more people move into areas prone to fires.

“The California insurance market is facing an availability crisis, leaving many residents without the protection they need for their homes and businesses,” said Dan Krause, Senior Vice President of State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company and President and Chief Executive Officer of State Farm General. “Our focus is on continuing to meet our customers’ needs and working with the State of California to create a sustainable insurance market. Outdated regulations that lead to lengthy rate approvals and other obstacles may need to be changed to alleviate the crisis. It’s crucial for us to take additional actions to address the situation so residents are properly covered and prepared for any risks they may face in the future.”

Built with ultimate strength, it can hold up to 80 pounds, which makes it great for shipping supplies or gifts to my friends and family, knowing that my packages will stay safe and secure.

I also like to have plenty of packaging tape on hand when I’m in declutter mode. There’s no better feeling than clearing out and donating gently used items that someone else may need.

3. Let your home make a statement

Are you dreaming of repainting a room, or creating a colorful statement wall? I love the energy I get from a home decorating project, and I like to create unique designs that reflect my personal style. From screen to spoon: How your phone can turn you into a master chef

2025-02-25T17:01:00

(BPT) – Make your smartphone a secret weapon for mastering your favorite recipes using apps, connected gadgets, AI and more.

In a world where your phone is as essential as a chef’s knife, the latest devices and technology can help you up-level your cooking skills. From trying quirky viral recipes to using artificial intelligence (AI) all while connected to America’s largest and fastest 5G network, here are eight ways your device can become your new sous-chef — on top of being your own personal assistant.

Learn from the pros

Sign up for virtual cooking classes or workshops to sharpen your skills and learn new recipes. Many professional chefs and culinary schools offer a mix of increasingly popular livestreamed or pre-recorded online courses that you can follow from the comfort of your kitchen.

Now trending

As a culinary playground, the internet also serves up tons of viral recipes such as shrimp sushi bake cups and bubble potato pillows.

Cooking recipes are the most popular form of influencer-created social media content, according to a 2024 report from Snap and IPG Magna. They’re as much about fun as they are about the fails (anyone remember raindrop cakes?), so don’t be afraid to grab your apron, fire up your phone and get ready to cook (and maybe giggle) your way through the latest internet food fads.

Tasty apps

Cooking apps are like having a tech-savvy sous-chef who gives you recipe ideas and always knows the right measurements. These apps not only help you get the ratios right but also remind you when to preheat the oven — because who hasn’t forgotten that step?

Not sure where to start? Listen to a pro: Model and influencer Chrissy Teigen, who is also a best-selling cookbook author, food TV host and owner of a cookware line, says her go-to apps are New York Times Cooking, America’s Test Kitchen and Tasty.

If you’re juggling apps while multitasking pans and chopping onions, the new Samsung Galaxy S25 lineup has got your back with cross-action apps. With this function, Google Gemini acts as your personal assistant, letting you knock out multiple tasks with one ask. It’s all about multitasking like a Michelin-star chef.

High tech for low pressure

Samsung’s Galaxy AI, available on the entire S25 lineup, can give you recipe ideas based on what you currently have in your kitchen. Just snap a photo of your fridge or pantry, and Galaxy AI will analyze the ingredients, suggest recipes and give you step-by-step instructions. Cool, right?

And get this — if you find a picture of a beautiful food plate online, Samsung’s updated Circle to Search lets you find the source and even recipes so you can recreate it at home. All it takes is one press and hold and then circling what you’d like to look up. Plus, Galaxy AI lets you easily translate content — like webpages and live phone calls — from different languages. So why not binge on everything from bagels to beignets?

Pump up the jams

Want to set the mood for a legendary culinary concert? Spotify and other streaming platforms can easily suggest a playlist that might just help you make magic. Or, if you prefer podcasts, press play on your favorite foodie show for some culinary inspiration.

Get the perfect pic

Got your masterpiece? Time to show it off — you’ve earned it. Taking pictures of your dishes can turn your kitchen into a mini food photo studio, and all you need is the latest mobile device to do it right. There’s a reason influencers like to say the phone eats first: #Food is the most popular hashtag on Instagram, with more than 250 million posts on the platform.

Pro tip: The Samsung Galaxy S25 phones can spoon-feed you a great photo with portrait-mode shots that rival high-end cameras, adjusting the camera settings for the ideal exposure and clarity, sharpening details and boosting colors after the shot. The Night Video with Audio Eraser feature captures content in vibrant detail, even in low light if you’re cooking for a romantic candlelit dinner, and minimizes unwanted sounds. Plus, get love from your family and friends on your latest kitchen concoctions with RCS messaging, which now allows you to send high-resolution photos and videos more easily across platforms.

Know when to order in

All great chefs have a backup plan, and takeout from delivery apps can go a long way to saving a dinner party. With online food delivery revenues cooking up an estimated $350 billion in the U.S. in 2024, it’s clear you’re not alone, so don’t sweat it if your recipe doesn’t work.

To make your cooking journey truly delicious, don’t forget to explore Samsung’s Galaxy S25 lineup.

Bon appétit!

Shining a Light on Spinocerebellar Ataxia: Raising Awareness for an Overlooked Disease this Rare Disease Day

2025-02-25T07:01:00

(BPT) – A rare disease is a disease, disorder, illness or condition that affects fewer than 200,000 Americans.1 Since rare diseases impact a small number of people, they often remain relatively unknown among the broader population.

In honor of Rare Disease Day, on February 28, 2025, Biohaven, a biopharmaceutical company focused on treatments for diseases with significant unmet needs, is bringing attention to spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA), a rare, progressively debilitating neurodegenerative disease that affects approximately 15,000 people in the U.S. and 24,000 in Europe and the United Kingdom.2

NORD®, the National Organization for Rare Disorders and official partner for Rare Disease Day in the U.S., is calling on the nation to “Show Your Stripes®” to shed light on rare diseases and generate support for all people on a rare medical journey. Amy M., who has lived with SCA for the last eight years, is showing her stripes by sharing her story about living with a rare disease that has no cure or FDA-approved treatment options. According to Amy, living with SCA is like “living in a physical prison that deteriorates your ability to have others understand you.”

Amy, an accomplished lawyer, lived her life unaware of having the disease until she began noticing changes in her body that couldn’t be explained. She started losing her balance, falling a lot and struggled with everyday things like wearing high-heeled shoes and going up and down stairs. “It is jarring, to find what were once seemingly mundane experiences, like climbing stairs or putting shoes on, become some of my greatest physical hardships,” said Amy. “And while the physical challenges that come with SCA are numerous, for me, the mental burden of this disease is what I have the most difficulty coming to terms with. I don’t want to accept the fact I could soon be in a wheelchair, without the ability to write or speak clearly, my independence stolen by SCA. But because there are no treatment options available for me, my only choice is to come to terms with my disease.”

SCA is a devastating disease that impacts all aspects of a person’s life as well as their family. People with SCA experience significant morbidity, including progression to a wheelchair, impaired gait leading to falls, inability to communicate due to speech impairment, difficulty swallowing, and premature death. While signs and symptoms can appear anytime from childhood to late adulthood, SCA typically presents in early adulthood and progresses over a number of years.

SCA is just one of the 10,000 rare diseases that have minimal or no treatment options.1 With 25-30 million Americans living with rare diseases,1 it’s crucial to continue to invest in research that offers hope to people living with diseases with significant unmet need. Biohaven currently has a New Drug Application under review with the FDA for a new treatment candidate for SCA.

Join Amy this Rare Disease Day by visiting NORD® and “showing your stripes” to show support for those living with rare diseases. To learn more about SCA and how Biohaven is reinforcing their commitment to help people like Amy through innovative research, visit Biohaven.com.

Elevate your home: Discover the latest trends in luxury kitchen and home innovations

2025-02-25T07:01:00

(BPT) – The 2025 Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) and International Builders’ Show (IBS) in Las Vegas are setting the stage for the latest trends in home design. Though the events are a must-see for industry professionals, the innovations showcased are offering plenty of inspiration for homeowners looking to update their spaces. Leading the charge are premium appliance brands such as LG and SKS, with products designed to make your home smarter, more efficient, and more beautiful than ever.

One of the stand-out features of the year is The New American Home 2025, a fully integrated smart home created by the National Association of Home Builders. This unique 9,423-square-foot showhome highlights some of the best new technology for the modern home. Smart innovations are featured throughout, from high-performance SKS kitchen appliances to energy-efficient LG HVAC and laundry solutions — showcasing how smart technology can enhance every aspect of home living.

Culinary spaces for the modern chef

Transforming your kitchen into a luxurious space doesn’t have to be a dream. Whether you’re a home chef, foodie or someone who loves spending time cooking, trusted brands are here to help make it a reality. For instance, the luxury SKS brand (formerly known as Signature Kitchen Suite) combines sophisticated design with cutting-edge technology, brings the best of both worlds to your kitchen. Their “True to Food” philosophy ensures that every product delivers precision and performance for today’s culinary enthusiasts.

For example, take the new 36-inch pro induction range unveiled at KBIS, which brings professional-grade cooking right into your home. Induction cooking is gaining momentum for its precision, efficiency, and safety. With near-instant heat, precise temperature control, and a cooler kitchen environment, induction technology is reshaping how home chefs cook. With a spacious 6.3 cubic feet oven, this industry-first range from SKS uses both steam and convection cooking to ensure even heat and perfect results every time. The powerful 7,000-watt, 11-inch dual-center element quickly boils water in about a minute and cooks with precision, while the flex cooking zones adapt to your cookware.

Innovative appliances to maximize space and efficiency

Space-saving innovations are a key trend in modern kitchen design, and answering the demand is the new “Counter-Depth MAX” refrigerator from LG that offers a sleek design without compromising on capacity. Its thin-door designs allows the refrigerator to fit into tight spaces, while still fully opening for easy access. With features like Door Cooling, this refrigerator keeps food fresher longer. Plus, its Zero Clearance feature means you can enjoy a built-in look without the hassle or expense of major renovations.

Smart solutions for every home system

Homeowners are increasingly turning to smart technology to improve the efficiency of their essential home systems, from water heaters to laundry. KBIS this year focused on this space with products designed to help save energy while offering better performance.

New “laundry centers” like the LG “WashTower” is a perfect example of how technology can make laundry day more efficient. Its stacked design with a center control panel takes up less floor space, while features like the dual inverter heat pump and ventless drying offer greater energy savings. What’s more, AI-powered intelligence ensures optimal wash and dry settings every time, taking the guesswork out of laundry.

Another highly energy-efficient solution showcased at IBS 2025 combines heat pump technology with LG’s advanced smart control systems, offering homeowners significant savings and reducing their carbon footprint. Unlike conventional water heaters, the inverter heat pump water heater surpasses ENERGY STAR certification requirements and is available in a variety of capacities to suit different home sizes.

From kitchens to laundry rooms, the latest innovations at this year’s builder’s show make it easy to elevate your home into a more efficient, modern space. Whether you’re upgrading your appliances or looking to redesign your entire home, these smart solutions are designed to make your life easier and more stylish.

This sense of style extends to cabinetry trends as well, where natural tones like soft whites, layered creams and weathered finishes are making a fresh statement in the kitchen. Dura Supreme Cabinetry is leading the charge, blending biophilic design with natural wood grains, greens and stone accents that promote harmony and wellness. At the same time, earthy tones like bronze and terra-cotta are merging with sleek, modern cabinetry, blending traditional and contemporary styles for a timeless look.

Aging in place? Practical renovations to improve safety in your home

2025-02-24T11:01:00

(BPT) – As the population ages, more older adults are choosing to stay in their home as long as possible. According to AgingInPlace.org, about 9 in 10 seniors plan to remain in their homes over the next five to 10 years. Choosing to remain in the home you’ve known and loved for decades gives you a sense of security and comfort that’s hard to replicate elsewhere. If this is what you or a family member wishes to do, plan now by creating a safer, worry-free environment, especially if you or your loved one lives alone.

Many steps you can take to improve the safety and convenience of your home are simple and cost-effective, and making those improvements now can mean many more years of enjoying your home. Here are some ideas to get you started.

1. Reduce trip and fall hazards

Balance becomes a serious concern for many older adults, and falling can cause serious injuries. Because it’s often hard to recognize potential dangers in your own home, you may want to have an occupational therapist or Certified Aging in Place Specialist visit to identify areas for improvement. Even asking a friend or family member to look with you can be helpful. Items of concern include:

  • Area rugs
  • Excess or unstable furniture
  • Stairs with poor railing or lighting
  • Uneven surfaces and cords

While you can easily remove small rugs or extra furniture, you may need a contractor for installing better railings, lighting upgrades and improving surfaces like thresholds that could cause tripping, as well as relocating electronics or rewiring to reduce troublesome cords.

2. Improve bathroom safety

The bathroom is a primary area of concern when it comes to falls and other hazards. You’ll first want to ensure that your home provides a bathroom on every floor, and that you use non-slip floor tiles and grab bars in shower or bath areas. Make sure to find a professional contractor who is knowledgeable and experienced in correctly installing grab bars for the safety of older adults.

A bathroom on every level: Having at least a powder room on each level avoids hazards from having to use stairs in a hurry, or when it’s dark and you may not be fully awake. Thanks to the technology of Saniflo products, you can have a new bathroom or powder room located virtually anywhere in your home without the expense, mess and hassle of creating below-floor plumbing drainage where none currently exists. Saniflo products provide an innovative, above-floor plumbing solution that lets you add or renovate bathrooms or even kitchens and laundry rooms without the need for costly, invasive, time-consuming below-floor plumbing work.

How it works: Saniflo systems use macerating and drain pump technology to efficiently handle wastewater from various fixtures, making them ideal for aging-in-place renovations. Unlike traditional plumbing that requires breaking through floors and foundations, Saniflo systems allow homeowners to install new bathrooms and other plumbing fixtures virtually anywhere in the home — including basements, garages or under staircases — without major structural changes. By eliminating need for extensive excavation and pipe rerouting, Saniflo products significantly reduce labor costs and construction time, making home upgrades more affordable.

Compact options like Sanicompact offer all-in-one solutions for small spaces, while models like Saniaccess 3 can handle up to three fixtures in a single installation, making them ideal for full bathroom additions. For example, New Jersey homeowner Joe O’Neill created a garage apartment with its own bathroom on a limited budget by using a Saniaccess 3 macerating toilet for the perfect cost-saving solution in a limited space.

Safer bathing options: A walk-in shower eliminates the need to step up into a shower or over a bathtub wall, which can be dangerous as you age. If you’re adding a new bathroom in an easy, accessible location, consider raising the entire bathroom floor a few inches from ground level. This removes the need for the shower itself to be on a 6-inch platform when installing Saniflo products such as their Sanishower and Sanibest Pro. It also relieves the additional worry of missing your step when you’re at your most vulnerable — getting in or out of the shower.

Tina, a homeowner in Connecticut, needed to have a shower installed immediately for her elderly parents’ suite right after her father had a heart attack. The installation of a Sanishower in the lower level of her home took only four hours, giving the family instant peace of mind.

3. Boost kitchen convenience

You can also have a contractor modify aspects of your kitchen to improve safety and usability. Two renovations to consider are lowering cupboards to make it easier to reach all necessary items, and/or having countertops lowered to better suit your height.

Simpler changes to your kitchen can include removing trip hazards (such as area rugs or excess bar stools) and replacing your traditional faucet with a newer faucet that’s easier to operate — or touchless, for easy use when your hands are full or you have joint or muscle stiffness. You may even want to consider having a pot filler installed to help you avoid lifting heavy pots of water to the stove.

Aging in place means having the comfort of your familiar home around you as long as you can live independently. To make your home safer for many years to come, consider tackling some of these improvement and renovation projects now. Learn more about these and other products at SFASaniflo.com/us.

Rare but Real: Raising Awareness for Hypoparathyroidism this Rare Disease Day

2025-02-24T08:01:00

(BPT) – Each year on the last day of February, people living with rare diseases—along with caregivers, healthcare professionals, advocacy groups, and others—come together to drive meaningful change and push for equitable care on Rare Disease Day.

With nearly 300 million people worldwide affected by rare diseases, this global movement amplifies the voices of those living with diseases that often go unrecognized. The European Organization for Rare Diseases (EURORDIS) founded Rare Disease Day in 2008, choosing February 29—a rare calendar date—to symbolize the nature of these diseases. Since then, EURORDIS, in collaboration with over 65 global organizations, has worked tirelessly to raise awareness, foster community, and advocate for better resources.

For the estimated 77,000 to 115,000 people in the U.S. living with hypoparathyroidism (hypopara), Rare Disease Day is an opportunity to shine a light on this often-misunderstood disease and the need for improved awareness, diagnosis, and treatment—including an available FDA-approved treatment option that directly addresses the disease’s root cause.

What is Hypopara?

Hypopara is a rare endocrine disease caused by insufficient levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH)—a key hormone that regulates calcium and phosphate levels in the bone, kidney, and intestine. Without enough PTH, the body struggles to maintain normal calcium balance, leading to symptoms like muscle cramps, tingling, brain fog, fatigue, and even seizures.

Approximately 75% of chronic hypopara cases occur due to accidental damage to or removal of the parathyroid glands during neck surgery, such as a thyroidectomy, while other causes stem from genetic and/or autoimmune conditions, or secondary or unknown causes.

Despite knowledge of what causes hypopara, it remains both underdiagnosed and undertreated, largely due to a lack of awareness among healthcare providers—and, until recently, lack of reliably available PTH-based therapies.

Challenges of Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosing hypopara can be challenging because its symptoms often overlap with other common medical conditions. For example, postsurgical patients may not show symptoms immediately, and the disease may only be detected during routine checkups or when healthcare providers investigate concerns like fatigue or muscle aches. Since these symptoms are nonspecific, hypopara can often be overlooked.

Historically, treatment options have been limited. For years, patients have been prescribed conventional therapy, which consists of active vitamin D and calcium, to manage some symptoms. However, conventional therapy does not address the missing PTH and may result in a high pill burden for patients.

FDA-Approved Treatment

YORVIPATH® is the first and only FDA-approved treatment for hypopara in adults in the U.S. YORVIPATH is a prescription medicine used to treat adults with low parathyroid hormone (PTH). This ready-to-use, once-daily injection provides continuous exposure to active PTH throughout the 24-hour dosing period.

The safety and effectiveness of YORVIPATH have not been established in individuals recently diagnosed with hypoparathyroidism following surgery or those with low calcium levels at the start of treatment. Additionally, its use is not recommended in children or young adults with developing bones. YORVIPATH may lead to high or low calcium levels in the blood or possible bone cancer. For more detailed safety information, please refer to the end of this article.

Unlike conventional therapy that relies on high doses of calcium and active vitamin D, YORVIPATH directly addresses the root cause of the disease. The goal of treatment with YORVIPATH is to maintain serum calcium levels in the normal range without the need for active vitamin D or therapeutic calcium doses. However, patients can continue taking calcium supplements as needed to meet their daily dietary requirements.

Community and Advocacy

To assist patients in starting and continuing treatment, the Ascendis Signature Access Program® (A•S•A•P) offers patient support with treatment initiation, insurance issues, and ongoing adherence. This program provides services to eligible patients prescribed YORVIPATH for its approved indication.

For those living with hypopara, connecting with advocacy organizations and patient support groups can offer community as well as essential resources and education. Organizations like the HypoPARAthyroidism Association help build this community and are dedicated to empowering patients through education, advocacy, and support.

This Rare Disease Day, raising awareness about hypopara is crucial to improving early diagnosis, expanding treatment awareness, and enhancing support for those affected. By fostering greater understanding and advocacy, we can drive meaningful change and improve lives.
