Save money and streamline your makeup routine with the help of these beauty hacks!

2020-08-09T22:01:00

(BPT) – Let’s face it, makeup can be expensive. We are living in a time like no other, with the pandemic and social distancing affecting every aspect of our lives — from our daily lifestyles, budgets, diets — to our beauty regimens. We are all guilty of wanting the most luxe and notable cosmetics to put on our faces. But in this economy, splurging on makeup isn’t a practical option.

Yet these affordable luxuries can be an excellent way to practice self-care when we need a little extra positivity in our lives. In fact, studies show that in challenging times women tend to treat themselves to personal care items as a way to feel better. As we look ahead to what the summer season has in store for us, there’s no question that it’s going to look different than years past — but “different” doesn’t mean you can’t buy the makeup that you love.

We connected with dermatologist Michelle Henry to talk about affordable and accessible ways to fuel up your beauty look in this new normal.

Seek premium products that offer multiple benefits

“We are living in the age of low-effort beauty, now more than ever. Layering on multiple makeup products at once is not a great idea in the summer, especially if you’re going to wear a mask. It can result in breakouts and clogged pores,” says dermatologist Dr. Henry. “It’s important to look for multi-benefit beauty products that help keep skin healthy and simplify your regimen; products with sunscreen and additional vitamins and antioxidants are great options.”

One high-quality drugstore foundation that offers multiple benefits for skin is Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 20. It offers a triple punch of natural-looking, silky coverage, effective sun protection and an exclusive blend of antioxidants to help your skin counter stress and improve luminosity, tone and texture over time. It’s makeup backed by the science of skincare — that keeps your skin healthy — at an affordable price.

For example, here are some ways you might pamper yourself with drugstore products — without overwhelming your budget.

Look for makeup dupes for value

Save money by finding specially formulated products that help you look good and feel better. Look for makeup dupes for value; dupes are a great way to feel out colors and formulas without having to let go of hard-earned dollars, while still getting effective, high-end products and benefits. Turns out most luxury brand makeup has the same ingredients in it and provides the same multi-benefits as the drugstore ones!

Use quality makeup brushes

Often, a perfect makeup job is more dependent on the usefulness of the tools than the amount spent on the products. Invest in well-made brushes, sponges and applicators that can be washed and used over and over. When you buy good quality tools, they help you achieve a more natural-looking makeup application and can even help you use less makeup.

But remember, failure to keep your tools clean leads to broken bristles that will show up on your skin. Cleaning makeup brushes has always been important, but during the pandemic, worries about avoiding exposure to germs and preventing cross-contamination are at an all-time high, so always clean your brushes.

Take advantage of frequent-shopper discounts

Once you find the drug chains that carry your favorite makeup brands, sign up for their rewards cards so you can accrue points toward future purchases and learn about special promotions. You can often rack up points picking up groceries, pharmaceuticals, and other items on offer, then use the discounts on your choice of cosmetics.

As the economy slowly recovers from the effects of COVID-19, savvy consumers continue to seek ways to care for their own well-being while also watching their money.

Neutrogena’s portfolio of makeup fueled by skincare can make you feel pampered, help you look radiant and empower you to present your best possible self, no matter the challenges you’re facing from day to day. Try Neutrogena today, available nationwide at any mass drugstore.

Yogic breathing techniques support respiratory health

2020-08-07T11:43:00

(BPT) – Because it happens automatically, you probably don’t put much thought into your breathing. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought focused attention to respiratory health. Conscious breathing — the yoga practice of pranayama — can help support respiratory health, mental wellness and the body’s physical ability to protect itself.

Pranayama basics and benefits

Pranayama is breath control, and it is a fundamental part of Kundalini Yoga. According to the 3HO Foundation, the average rate of breathing for most people is 16 times per minute. When the rate of breathing increases, or if it becomes rapid and irregular, the mind also becomes disturbed and erratic.

Yoga practitioners believe that your rate of breathing and your state of mind are inseparable. When you learn how to focus your breath, you have more control over your mind, which influences mental well-being by reducing stress and calming negative responses.

Beyond mental wellness, researchers have found that mindful breathing also supports physical wellness. In controlling your breath, you can help strengthen the immune system and support the body’s response to disease. This is particularly important when it comes to respiratory health.

Yoga – A Remedy to Respiratory Illness” by Dr. Sripriya Krishnan states: “Research studies report that many people with serious respiratory ailments have found a solution in yoga. As the mind is calmed the hyper-reactivity that causes diseases such as bronchial asthma and nasal allergy is reduced. Yoga also strengthens the immune system, so chronic infections are less likely. Finally, if the lungs are permanently damaged, as in chronic bronchitis, yoga teaches how to improve the mechanical efficiency of our breathing and make the most of our lung capacity.”

Start a pranayama practice at home

With heightened awareness of respiratory wellness, many people are exploring the breathing exercises of pranayama at home. Here are two simple Kundalini Yoga breathing techniques you can practice anywhere to improve your respiratory health:

Technique 1: Long deep breathing

Long deep breathing uses the full capacity of the lungs by utilizing the three parts of the lungs: abdominal or lower, chest or middle, clavicular or upper. Begin the inhale with an abdominal breath. Then add the chest breath and finish with a clavicular breath. All three are done in a smooth motion.
  • Start the exhale by relaxing the clavicle, then slowly emptying the chest. Finally, pull in the abdomen to force out any remaining air.
  • Breathe through the nose, and focus on gradually slowing your breath.
  • Continue for 26 breaths, or 3-31 minutes.

Technique 2: Alternate nostril breathing

Sit in a comfortable position either on the floor or in a chair and maintain a straight spine. Using the thumb and index fingers of the right hand, make a “U” and use the thumb to close off the right nostril and the index finger to close off the left nostril.

  • Close the left nostril, inhale deeply through the right nostril. At the end of the inhale, close the right nostril and exhale through the left nostril.
  • Now inhale through the left nostril fully and deeply, then close the left nostril and exhale through the right one.
  • Again, inhale through the right nostril and continue alternate nostril breathing. The breath must be complete and full on both the inhalation and exhalation cycles, keeping the shoulders without tension and the body relaxed.
  • Continue for 3-5 minutes.
  • To end, inhale deeply, hold the breath a few seconds, lower the hand and exhale.

Controlled breathing through pranayama can help improve respiratory health, which is even more important during the coronavirus pandemic. To learn more visit kundaliniresearchinstitute.org and 3ho.org.

  • Your rate of breathing and your state of mind are inseparable.
  • The slower your rate of breathing, the more control you have over your mind.
  • The mind follows the breath, and the body follows the mind.

How A Very Low Blood Sugar Emergency Changed One College Student’s Mind About Being Rescue Ready

2020-08-07T07:01:01

(BPT) – Sponsored by Eli Lilly and Company

It was Valentine’s Day weekend when Emily Marcum’s parents traveled from Nevada to New York City to visit their daughter. Emily had always dreamed of living in New York, and that dream came true when she was accepted to study elementary education at Queens College.

On that cold February day, the 19-year-old had planned a full day of sightseeing and walking across the city with her family, starting in Manhattan and stretching across the East River into Brooklyn. She could not wait to share some of New York’s most iconic sights and had planned an ambitious, full-day affair concluding with tickets to see The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway.

But halfway through the family’s city tour, as they walked along the Brooklyn Bridge, Emily, who has type 1 diabetes, started to feel hungry, confused and shakiness throughout her body.

Emily was 12-years-old when she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. In the seven years since, she has learned to manage her condition by always paying attention to carbs in meals and monitoring her blood sugar levels. Growing up, Emily and her parents were vigilant about being prepared for very low blood sugar emergencies — a condition people with diabetes may experience if their blood sugar drops low enough that they need help to recover. For the Marcums, being prepared meant having a glucagon prescription on hand and making sure Emily’s closest friends and family understood how to use the treatment, just in case.

But Emily didn’t think she would ever experience a low blood sugar emergency as long as she had candy or cake gel available to help raise her blood sugar level and she didn’t always feel comfortable talking about the possibility one might occur with her friends.

“I ate a few Skittles to try and raise my blood sugar but it wasn’t making me feel any better,” Emily recalls from that day in February. “I told my parents that I had a place in mind for lunch but couldn’t remember where it was anymore. I just needed to stop and sit down.”

By the time Emily and her parents crossed the Brooklyn Bridge, her usual efforts to raise her blood sugar quickly were not working.

“I was holding my mom’s hand and then suddenly felt my head fly back. My mom thought I was joking at first, but my eyes rolled back and she immediately knew something was wrong,” said Emily. “My dad helped lay me on the ground, but I have no memory of that or anything in the moments after.”

Emily was experiencing her first low blood sugar emergency. Luckily, her mom had brought Emily’s Baqsimi® (glucagon) nasal powder 3 mg prescription on the trip and was able to spring into action. She grabbed the Baqsimi from her backpack and quickly administered it to help revive her daughter. Baqsimi is the first and only dry nasal spray that can treat very low blood sugar (severe hypoglycemia) in people with diabetes ages 4 years and above, and is a form of glucagon given as a puff in the nose. Do not use Baqsimi if: you have a tumor in the gland on top of your kidneys (adrenal gland) called pheochromocytoma; you have a tumor in your pancreas called insulinoma; you are allergic to glucagon, or any other ingredient in Baqsimi.

“Before this experience, I didn’t really think or talk much about the possibility of having a low blood sugar event that I couldn’t use candy to recover from. This experience showed me that, despite doing all the right things, the unexpected can still happen,” Emily said.

Emily survived the low blood sugar emergency, but the traumatic experience was a wakeup call. In the months since, Emily brings Baqsimi with her wherever she goes and makes sure her family, friends, and even boss at the coffee shop where she works back home know when and how to use her glucagon rescue treatment.

“Having Baqsimi on hand makes me feel confident to live my life, knowing that those around me have a simple to use glucagon rescue treatment available in case I have another low blood sugar emergency,” says Emily. “With Baqsimi, I am open to talking to my friends and family about low blood sugar emergencies and how to help me if it happens.”

According to Beth Mitchell, a registered nurse who has treated people with low blood sugar emergencies and is a member of the diabetes team at Eli Lilly and Company, there are a few steps people living with diabetes who are at risk for very low blood sugar can take to prepare for an emergency:

  • Keep glucagon rescue on hand: Very low blood sugar is an unpredictable event for people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes that can happen unexpectedly, anytime, anywhere. Be prepared by having rescue glucagon readily available. While there are several options to choose from, you may consider Baqsimi, which offers a ready-to-use option. Baqsimi is the first and only dry nasal spray that can treat very low blood sugar in people with diabetes ages 4 years and above. Baqsimi may cause serious side effects including:
    • High blood pressure. Baqsimi can cause high blood pressure in certain people with tumors in their adrenal glands.
    • Low blood sugar. Baqsimi can cause certain people with tumors in their pancreas to have low blood sugar.
    • Serious allergic reaction. Call your doctor or get medical help right away if you have a serious allergic reaction including: rash, difficulty breathing, or low blood pressure.

You can learn more at www.baqsimi.com.

  • Know when and how to use rescue glucagon: Rescue glucagon is meant to be used when someone is having a low blood sugar emergency, where the person is unable to eat or drink or needs help from someone else. Possible signs of a low blood sugar emergency may include irritability, dizziness, lack of coordination, inattention or confusion, shaking or sweating, and seizure or loss of consciousness. If you choose to have Baqsimi as your rescue glucagon, know that Baqsimi is designed to be given as a puff in the nose and does not need to be inhaled. It can be given even if the recipient is passed out or has nasal congestion. It is important to review the Instructions for Use included with your Baqsimi device, or available on www.baqsimi.com. In addition, Baqsimi is compact, portable and ready to use (no reconstitution or injection required) in a precise and premeasured dose. It requires no refrigeration and can be stored at temperatures up to 86°F (30°C degrees).
  • Talk your doctor and support network: While some people in your support network may be familiar with how to help in the event of a low blood sugar emergency, reminding them of the possible signs of an emergency and when and how to use rescue glucagon may help them feel confident to help in case the unexpected happens. And don’t forget to talk with your doctor and diabetes care team about how to prevent low blood sugar events, as well as about emergency preparedness.

As Emily and her family learned from her low blood sugar emergency, having a simple to use glucagon rescue treatment on hand is critical, whether you’re at home, heading off to school or out with friends. If you want to feel more prepared and confident in case the unexpected happens, even if you’ve never had a low blood sugar emergency before, be rescue ready and talk to your doctor about what rescue medication option is right for you and your support network.

4 simple ways to keep indoor air fresh at all times

2020-08-07T10:15:00

(BPT) – Americans today are more focused on cleaning and sanitization — not to mention the air they breathe — than ever. Indoor air quality has already been a growing concern in the United States for some time. According to a study published in the journal Science of the Total Environment, indoor air quality can be worse than the air outdoors. You may not realize that simply by doing normal things like cooking, cleaning, personal hygiene or enjoying a hobby, invisible pollution is being added to the air.

With social distancing measures, people are spending more time at home, so being proactive about indoor air quality is even more essential. Consider these steps to help maintain fresher air and a cleaner environment:

Develop an indoor green thumb

With more people looking to be productive at home, houseplants are a great clean air solution that has multiple benefits. According to houseplant specialists The Sill, houseplants help boost your mood and productivity, which is essential for anyone spending long hours working at home. The Pothos plant is highly rated for removing indoor air toxins as well as the Snake plant, which absorbs toxins through its leaves and produces oxygen. With houseplants, not only will your work space look lush but also the air will stay fresh.

Use a room and portable air purifiers

From the kitchen to the car to the office or dorm room, the portable LG PuriCare Mini Air Purifier helps clean air wherever you go. Compact and light enough to carry in one hand, the advanced filter removes 99% ultra-fine dust and reduces allergens and irritants. One charge provides quiet filtration for up to 8 hours. A four-color LED smart display shows air quality in real-time and Bluetooth control makes monitoring conditions and performance simple. If you’re looking for a permanent air purifier in your home, LG’s PuriCare 360 is certified asthma and allergy friendly by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America and removes more than 90% of airborne allergens.

Lower moisture levels

Mold and mildew are common culprits that reduce air quality and can trigger asthma and allergies. In your home it’s important to control moisture to prevent mold and mildew growth. When using the bathroom to bathe or shower, always use a fan or crack the window. In moist spaces like basements, be mindful about opening windows, running fans and keeping rooms dry. Be aware of your whole home’s humidity levels and use a dehumidifier when necessary to remove moisture from the air.

Change HVAC filters regularly

Your home’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system helps maintain a comfortable indoor environment all year long. It includes a filter that captures dust, allergens and other microscopic particles to help keep the air clean and the system running efficiently. Set a reminder to check the filter monthly. At minimum, it should be changed every three months. During heavy use — such as winter and summer — change it more often. Bonus: A clean filter helps the system run better and saves money.

Indoor air pollution is a growing concern, and these four simple steps will help you maintain fresh indoor air so you and your family can breathe easy.

Pet-friendly design tips

2020-08-07T08:41:00

(BPT) – Whether you’re dreaming of a complete home remodel or a simple decor update, you may not be factoring your pets in your decision-making and overall design process. But how many times have you regretted a furniture or upholstery choice once Fido or Fluffy got their paws (and fur) on it?

You can make any room look more stylish, even if you have a chronic shedder or scratcher living in your home. All it takes is a little planning and some research on the best products to stand up to your furry family members.

“No matter how you want to update or refresh your home, it’s best to be proactive by considering the amount of traffic, the overall purpose the room serves and what kind of wear your room will endure from people and pets,” says Katie Allen, design and trend director at LL Flooring. “Then pick products and furnishings that will both look great and stand the test of time.”

Here are some tips for your next remodel, ensuring you and your pets will love the new space:

Start with a durable base

Changing up your flooring can completely transform the look of the room, but you have to remember that pets cause more wear and tear on your floors than any other element of your home. So it’s best to start by choosing stain-resistant, durable and attractive flooring for a long-lasting room makeover.

For example, LL Flooring, which was previously Lumber Liquidators, offers options that add beauty to your home, no matter how much traffic the rooms get:

  • The AquaSeal flooring line features water-resistant locking technology to help protect against accidents and other messes for up to 72 hours. The durable flooring will also stand up to heavy foot traffic, from both pets and kids, is easy to clean and offers quick click installation.
  • The CoreLuxe flooring options offer an enhanced wear layer that will help defend it against scratches, scuffs and stains. Its no-fuss maintenance is as attractive as its authentic hardwood looks, but unlike wood, this flooring is waterproof — wet-mopping and common household spills won’t damage it.

Both types of flooring come in a wide variety of colors and styles that can be seen, along with hundreds of other options, by using the Floor Finder tool on LLFlooring.com.

Out of sight, out of mind

If possible, try to match the color of the room’s fabrics (and/or flooring) to your pet’s fur color. Doing this will help hide at least some of the hair they leave behind. If you have a black dog and choose a white rug, all your time will be spent vacuuming. Multiple pets? A multi-color pattern for your upholstery or rugs can be your best friend (next to the four-legged one, that is).

Choose the right materials

Stain resistant, smooth-textured upholstery for your couches and chairs — such as leather or synthetic materials — work best, as they are less appealing to scratch and make it easier to deal with any pet-related messes. Slipcovers work well too, since they are machine washable, and they can cover flaws on any furniture you’re not yet ready to upgrade.

Discourage furniture abuse

Avoid wicker and rattan furniture and accent pieces, since it can be used as a chew or scratch toy by your dog or cat. As an alternative, create a designated play area with your animal pal in mind, supplied with all the toys and comforts they need. Offering multiple scratching posts for cats is a great idea, especially if they contain catnip to attract your feline friend. Provide your animal companions with their own special beds, encouraging them to snuggle up with attention and treats.

Pet proof your rooms

Just as you would childproof your home when prepping for a mobile little one, consider each room from your pet’s point of view. What is at a level they are likely to bump or whack with their tail? Don’t keep breakable items on coffee tables or other low places where they can be bumped into and broken, or up on shelves that kitty can reach easily. Store those items safely away or display them in a closable cabinet.

With these tips in mind, your home or room makeover can be a haven for your entire family, including your pets.

7 simple tips to stay organized for back-to-school 2020

2020-08-07T10:01:00

(BPT) – Whether it’s the first day of middle school or the first day away at college, students of all ages are preparing for a new school year. Students might be learning at home, in the classroom or a combination of both, so now is the time to get organized and prepared to help you tackle the year ahead. Here are some useful tips and tricks to help you succeed this school year.

1. Designate a study space

Whether it’s used for homeschooling or homework after school, a dedicated study space helps you stay organized and focused on learning. Once you have your desk area decided, add your go-to essentials for easy studying, including pencils, erasers and a Post-it® Pop-up Note Vertical Dispenser. Need to jot down a quick reminder for an upcoming assignment? The easy one-handed note dispensing has you covered for all of your study sessions.

2. Add some fun personality

Make a study space you’ll want to be in by adding personalized touches throughout. Pictures of friends and family are always a fun way to make a space feel like your own. Adding favorite colors or designs can help as well, such as colorful folders, bright accessories and fun notes to easily jot down reminders or even affirmations to keep yourself motivated.

3. Use colors strategically

Use different colors strategically to stay organized. For example, use Post-it® Super Sticky Notes Marrakesh Collection in a Kanban board to help keep track of all your school assignments. Assigning different colors for each column (for example, yellow for in-progress and green for complete) will help call attention to the tasks at hand.

4. Create mobile study bins

When the kitchen table or shared desk are being used, mobile study bins can make moving around hassle-free. Personalize a plastic bin for each student in your home and fill them with grade-appropriate essentials. Give your kindergartner their favorite box of crayons and your high school senior some flags and tabs for easy note taking. That way when space is at a premium, they can grab a bin and head to a quiet corner, their bedroom or even outdoors to study.

5. Keep a journal or calendar

With so much going on, to-do’s can slip through the cracks. That’s why keeping a journal or calendar is a good habit to adopt. A personal agenda can go from home to the classroom and beyond so you never miss a beat. Additionally, a weekly family calendar can help keep everyone connected, especially when schedules get hectic. The Post-it® Weekly Planner is great for hanging in the kitchen or mud room for everyone to easily access. That way the whole family can stay in the know.

6. Use a “do not disturb” system

Studying at home can be full of distractions. Consider adopting a system that indicates if you are busy or not. For example, use Super Sticky notes to create door tags in different colors. Green can mean, “come on in.” Yellow can mean, “knock first.” Red can mean, “do not disturb.”

7. Utilize lists

Lists are one of the best tools you can use to stay organized. Whether it’s a list of facts to study for an upcoming test or a list of supplies needed for an important project, writing items out in a memorable way will ensure you don’t forget a thing. Plus, when you write something down you help your brain remember it better, so make a list to support cognitive function.

No matter what the new school year has in store for your family, with a positive attitude and an organized approach, you’ll be sure to have a successful and productive school year packed with learning and fun. Know your own mind like never before – improving mental health with genetic insights

2020-08-07T15:01:01

(BPT) – With the spotlight on wellness these days, it’s normal to want to use every possible tool to keep yourself and your family healthy.

Tools like genetic testing have become popular beyond exploring your ancestry for what they reveal about inherited traits related to physical health. Knowing your genetic predispositions can motivate you to get crucial health screenings or make lifestyle improvements.

What if you could do the same for your mental health?

Today, people are coping with unprecedented levels of stress and anxiety. Many are seeking new ways to improve their mental wellness, and to support that of their children and family.

Thanks to multiple scientific sources, including genome-wide association studies (GWAS), researchers have made meaningful connections between certain genetic variants and mental health. This knowledge has created a groundbreaking new approach to mental wellness.

“While your environment and circumstances affect your mental well-being, we now know that genetics also plays a key part in your mental wellness. Variants in your DNA can predispose you towards certain traits and behavioral tendencies,” said Dr. David Krause, Chief Medical Officer at Genomind. “Learning about your genetic makeup can help you make more informed decisions regarding your mental wellness, and be more proactive in taking care of yourself and your family.”

Using data largely derived from multiple GWAS, a new DNA test from Genomind helps you understand yourself more completely — encouraging you to take new steps to improve your well-being. Genomind’s mental health experts use your DNA to develop a personalized Mental Health Map, which dives into the 7 Core Genetic Mental Health Capabilities:

1. Stress and anxiety: Responses to stress and anxiety, and adaptability.

2. Mood: Temperament, outlook, emotional vulnerability and mood stability.

3. Focus and memory: Working memory, long-term memory, focus and attention.

4. Substance use and habits: Habit-forming potential and the effects of alcohol, nicotine and marijuana.

5. Sleep: Sleep cycle, ease of falling asleep, sleeping behavior and daytime energy levels.

6. Social behavior: Self-perception, social perception and need for social connection.

7. Eating behavior: Eating patterns, triggers, food selectivity and preferences.

Genomind® Mental Health Map™ connects your DNA to behavioral traits, and offers helpful insights and actions to improve your wellness based on your unique genetic makeup. Patient advocacy groups like Mental Health America (MHA), National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD) provide advice and tools. In addition, Genomind offers consultations with its advisors to help you interpret your results and make wellness action plans.

Using DNA to support your mental health

Example 1: Focus

Your ability to focus is influenced by brain cell signaling, a mechanism that transmits information from one brain cell to the next. Certain variants of brain cell signaling genes (CACNA1C and ANK3) can lead to excessive or altered activity of this mechanism, which may result in a predisposition toward inattentiveness and distractibility. If you (or your child) have this predisposition, you can act to stabilize brain cell signaling, improving your brain health and performance.

Recommendations include increasing your intake of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to help stabilize brain cell signaling and are beneficial for brain health and focus. You can boost your omega-3 fatty acid intake through your diet and/or supplements. There are also techniques provided by CHADD to help overcome distractions.

Example 2: Social Behavior

Your comfort in social situations and ability to connect with others is impacted by a hormone called oxytocin. This powerful hormone helps us feel empathy and plays a key role in bonding with others. The brain chemical balance of oxytocin can be impacted by a genetic variant of the OXTR gene, potentially decreasing oxytocin activity which can lead to difficulty with social situations and connections. If you (or your child) have this variant, there are several things you can do to manage these tendencies.

Recommendations include actions that increase the level of oxytocin in your brain, like practicing gratitude and increasing physical touch. Ways to deal with inhibitions and forge new relationships, exercises in building empathy in adults, and teaching empathy in children are also provided.

“While your genes don’t define you,” observed Dr. Krause, “they can give you a window into traits that may shape your behavior. Understanding your genetic makeup gives you a positive way to support your mental health as you navigate the challenges of life.”

2020-08-07T15:45:00

(BPT) – In this new era of staycations and social distancing, there has been a heightened interest in outdoor recreational activities, especially with watersports and watercraft. According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, watercraft sales are up as much as 75% compared to last year, making it one of the fastest growing activities out there. With the rise in popularity of watercraft and more boats out on the water, Sea-Doo maker BRP is offering tips to those who are ready to venture out in the open water.

“The Sea-Doo life is about adventure, fun and unforgettable experiences, and that’s as important now as it has ever been,” said Annick Lauzon, Director, Global Marketing, Sea-Doo. “More and more people are discovering motorized water sports, and they’re getting to know what experienced riders have known all along: very few things in life eliminate stress like spending time on the open water. In fact, it’s hard to find anyone on a Sea-Doo who has a frown!”

Here are five things Sea-Doo recommends before starting your adventure:

1. Check if you need a license.

With the increase in watercraft popularity, more riders will be out on the water, and it’s important you have all the information when traveling lake-to-lake, finding your favorite river spot, or riding in the open ocean. Each state (province) has its own rules and regulations regarding licensing and proper age to operate a watercraft. Check out the Boat U.S. Foundation or Boat-Ed.com to know the regulations in your region.

2. Have a good understanding of your watercraft before you hit the waves.

Get to know the general functions of your watercraft. It might be obvious, but spend some time on land learning the controls and functions so you can hit the water with confidence. Sea-Doo recommends you check out your operator’s guide, know your fuel level, and understand the general best operational practices so you’re good to go before heading away from shore.

3. Be chill and remember to share the water with others.

Respect everyone on the water and surroundings, and adopt a fun and safe riding style. Be mindful of signs and reminders to slow down or stay out of restricted areas. Also, keep a safe distance away from others and the shoreline. Watercraft were meant for social distancing even before it was a thing! Finally, never ride under the influence of drugs or alcohol as it puts everyone’s safety at risk.

4. Wear the right gear.

A life jacket (aka Personal Flotation Device or PFD) is a no-brainer even if you know how to swim. For additional safety, Sea-Doo reminds riders to wear the tether cord connected to the ignition switch on your life jacket at all times. In the event you end up in the water, that tether cuts the engine power and you can get right back on. Also, you and your passenger should always wear a wetsuit bottom in neoprene for protection. And finally, take sunglasses to increase the cool factor and for protection from the sun and the elements!

5. Pay attention to the environment.

Leave your playground and surroundings cleaner than you found it. Protecting nature and the outdoors is what will keep watersports and recreational activities going for decades to come. Don’t throw trash in the water or surrounding areas. And respect the animals in the area — after all, it’s their home.

By following these tips, watercraft riders will not only be able to take advantage of water fun but get in some healthy escape therapy, recharge their metaphorical batteries and practice social distancing to create great memories from this unforgettable summer.

Expert Series: A Post-Pandemic Playbook: Lessons for Small Businesses from Financial Advisors

2020-08-07T09:01:00

(BPT) – By Richard Whitworth, Cetera Financial Group

In the months since the coronavirus grew into a pandemic, small businesses have worked their way through all the stages of grief. Like much of the world, we’ve moved past the shock and denial of this health and economic crisis and settled into acceptance. But instead of settling into complacency or staying in the comfort zone, small businesses are showing signs of optimism and resilience and are pushing forward. Small businesses of all stripes can take a page from the financial professional’s playbook. As a relationship-driven business, investment professionals — on and beyond Main Street — have seen their offices and operations impacted as the pandemic has affected the way they serve and interact with customers — both current and prospective.

While many financial professionals have spent the past few months working to prop up their businesses and stabilize revenue, now they are looking once again toward growth by better serving their clients’ needs. The crisis has bolstered their determination and sparked creativity. With no other options and facing unprecedented challenges, the field has been forced to shift, yielding new lessons and strategies. To withstand the uncertainty ahead and build a stronger foundation for the future, small business owners should weigh a few key strategies:

Craft a referral strategy – Being a successful small business owner requires strong relationships, trusted service to the community and building a recognized brand and profile. For financial professionals, those relationships are essential to keeping clients, as well as getting new ones. The social distancing required amid the coronavirus pandemic put a halt to many of the traditional face-to-face marketing and networking opportunities that enable those connections. Without them, it is more challenging to share knowledge and build trust with clients old and new. Instead, consider developing a referral strategy with an automated marketing module to tap into the networks of existing clients who will spread the word of your services and success.

Review and refresh their digital presence – In unprecedented times like these you can’t rest on your laurels or remain static in your services and experience. And with the closing of offices and storefronts, your digital presence needs to do the bulk of the work of inviting and engaging potential customers. That means you can no longer get by on that 15-year-old bio and photo. It’s time to update your website and social platforms and consider how to differentiate your services from everyone else. There are an array of digital tools to help, including webinars and effective marketing platforms to communicate your value proposition.

Get back to the basics of growth, virtually – Knowing that dinners, seminars and other tried-and-true business development tactics are off the table for the time being, small business marketers must be creative in getting their message out. The world has now embraced video conferencing and digital communications as effective substitutes for in-person consultation and even larger events. People are more likely to feel comfortable meeting and networking via digital platforms that have dynamic engagement features and are relatively easy to use. Even in an economic crisis, or perhaps because of it, there is demand for financial guidance and an experienced professional to guide and reassure wary investors. Technology can help you reach a broader audience and extend the conversation beyond the initial meeting or event. And financial professionals may be at an advantage at this moment in time since clients understand that uncertainty and risk are even greater. When there’s no predicting where the economy will go or when the crisis will subside, clients are more inclined to blame the crisis, and not the financial professional, when their financial strategy hits a speed bump.

Establish knowledge in the current context – No one has all the answers in this evolving crisis, but staying current and being innovative can help you sustain your business and give you the topical experience clients are seeking now. As states and localities shift to re-open more businesses, financial professionals need to be steeped in totally new areas. Knowing best practices for following the CDC’s health guidelines, for example, positions financial professionals to re-open safely while being able to better support small business clients facing similar challenges. And expanding knowledge in succession planning — a new reality for many small business owners who may experience illness themselves or among their family and staff — can help clients manage the temporary setbacks inherent in today’s crisis.

Be a realist, and an optimist – While the pandemic has proved devastating to many small businesses across the country and put tremendous strain on a range of sectors, there are many examples of people stepping up and showing resilience. Financial professionals and the small businesses they serve are rediscovering their community focus and pitching in to solve the day-to-day problems we are all facing. But the see-saw ride — with the ups and downs of re-opening and subsequent shutdowns as the virus resurges — even keep optimists like me up at night. The uncertainty of how to re-open, and how long it will last (and whether the client base will still be there) makes it impossible for a small business owner to forecast revenue, keep up production and manage expenses. Since most small businesses lack access to sufficient capital, the stop and start of the economy has a damaging effect on cash flow. Financial professionals must take a strategic approach then in helping clients accept this new COVID-driven reality and navigate a path forward.

But there is no such thing as planning right now. As sound a strategy as it might have been to create a 3-year financial strategy in the past, that type of approach is all but futile in the face of so many tactical and short-term challenges. Businesses, instead, need to prepare for the immediate next phases of this crisis. Financial professionals can help them get ready to reopen, for example, and then to be nimble enough to shift the revenue model, the client engagement approach, and even the nature of the product or service to respond to another shutdown.

Look to other industries for models and inspiration – The financial services industry is not always quick to adapt or innovate. But doing so now is urgent and necessary. There are examples in other industries that can inspire our own creative thinking and action. There are some compelling lessons in entertainment, for example, and in the boldness of industry giants like Disney in bringing “Hamilton” and other blockbuster films direct to the consumer. Far from being a small upstart, this iconic leader in in-person entertainment was nimble enough to pivot to create more engaging virtual experiences. Now it’s rocking its digital strategy.

Ultimately, small businesses will play an enormous and essential role in the comeback of the economy and the resilience of local communities. The sheer size of this sector — small businesses account for 44% of all economic output in the U.S. and employ 53% of the nation’s workforce — signals its vital role in any recovery1. Financial professionals can help those clients endure these unprecedented ups and downs by putting the right tools and strategies in play. And we can all sleep a little better knowing the potential for the small business sector to rebound when this crisis stabilizes and subsides.

Protecting your eyesight against the silent advance of glaucoma

2020-08-06T07:31:00

(BPT) – “Will I go blind?” It’s a frightening thought that most people have when they are first told they have glaucoma.

“Patients are almost always concerned that they are going to lose their vision,” says Andrew Iwach, M.D., executive director of the Glaucoma Center of San Francisco. “The good news for the majority of patients is that we can maintain their vision with treatment.”

The sneak thief of sight

Glaucoma, an eye disease that damages the optic nerve, is the leading cause of irreversible blindness. Currently, it affects more than three million people in the United States. The National Eye Institute projects this number will rise by 58% over the next decade to 4.2 million people.

The most common form of the disease is open-angle glaucoma, which affects 90% of patients and occurs when the eye’s drainage canals become clogged over time, according to the Glaucoma Research Foundation.

Open-angle glaucoma has been called “the sneak thief of sight” because it strikes without symptoms. In fact, experts estimate that half of the patients who have glaucoma don’t know it. As much as 40% of vision can be lost without a person noticing. And once that eyesight is lost, it’s permanently gone.

“I didn’t have any symptoms prior to diagnosis,” says Richie Kahn, 34, who was diagnosed in March 2019. “By then, glaucoma had already stolen part of my vision. I was surprised to learn that my brain was actually compensating for my vision loss by filling in the blanks.”

Hope through treatment

Since glaucoma has no symptoms in its early stages and progresses slowly over many years, eye doctors emphasize the importance of regular eye exams to detect the disease before there’s a significant loss of vision.

The target for glaucoma therapy is to lower intraocular pressure (IOP). High IOP causes damage to the optic nerve, which produces vision loss in the disease. Approaches to lowering IOP include a wide range of eye drop medications, laser treatments that are performed in a doctor’s office, and several types of incisional surgery.

Trinh Green, M.D., has lived with glaucoma for 24 years after being diagnosed at age 21. Like Richie, she had no symptoms of the disease, so news of her diagnosis came as a total surprise. Her advice to others is to remain calm and stay optimistic throughout their care and treatment.

“I think it’s very important for people to stay calm after learning they have glaucoma,” says Trinh. “There are many more treatments available in the last few years. I also owe so much to Dr. Iwach. He’s a very calming presence. Whenever there was a setback and the disease progressed, he would tell me, ‘I have a few more tricks up my sleeve.’”

The power of knowledge

In addition to early detection and treatment, Dr. Iwach emphasizes the importance of patients learning everything they can about glaucoma.

“Getting the facts, including risk factors and treatment options, can empower patients to improve their outcomes and reduce their fears,” he says.

Dr. Iwach encourages all his patients to read “Understanding and Living with Glaucoma,” published by the Glaucoma Research Foundation. The free booklet, updated and newly illustrated, offers a comprehensive introduction to glaucoma and guidance about how patients can work with their doctors to manage the disease.

Glaucoma patients like Richie found power in knowledge in their fight against glaucoma.

“Everyone’s journey will be different and you have to be willing to advocate for yourself,” says Richie. “I learned a lot from the Glaucoma Research Foundation. Staying informed about my particular situation allows me to be an active member of my own care team, doing my part to preserve my vision.”
