6 questions to ask when taking your business online

2020-09-02T07:01:00

(BPT) – Whether you run a solo small business, or your business is moving from brick-and-mortar to e-commerce, you’ve likely got a long to-do list — and you may not know where to start. Or if your business is already online, you may be trying to improve your website and stand out from the competition. Do you have the skills and know-how to make that happen?

Not everyone does. Chances are, you know a lot about your products or services, but not necessarily how to promote your business and run it successfully using today’s digital tools. And due to the pandemic, increasing your online presence and running your business virtually has become even more crucial.

According to survey data released by Fiverr, 49% of U.S. small and medium-sized businesses are optimistic about their future prospects after the lockdown has passed, but not surprisingly, nearly a quarter (22%) of them do plan to increase their digital marketing spend as a result of COVID-19.

If you’re one of the many entrepreneurs trying to figure out your next steps for taking — or optimizing — your business online, here are some questions to ask:

1. What are you selling?

Are you selling a product or a service? This makes a difference in how you run your business. Can your business happen virtually (if it’s a service), or do you have to manage manufacturing, inventory and shipping on top of marketing and advertising, online ordering and finances?

2. Do you need your own website or online store?

Many small businesses can succeed — or at least start out — by selling products on an existing platform like Etsy or Amazon, rather than creating their entire online store from scratch. But it may not be as hard to build your own site as you think.

3. What do you need on your website?

What will best serve your business? “About” and “Contact Us” pages? Do you want to include a blog? Customer testimonials and special promotions for new clients? Do you need a catalog of products and services? Does your business need to include a list of services, rates and shipping costs? Making a list of what your business needs is a useful starting point for whoever you hire to help build your website.

4. What web templates do you see working best for your business?

Are you familiar with WordPress, Wix and Squarespace? Which would be the best to suit your particular business?

5. What type of content do you want to see on your site?

Would you like to see custom-made illustrations or animation? Stock or custom photography? How about videos?

6. How do you make sure customers can find your website?

There’s a lot of competition out there. Unless you’re well-versed in SEO and how Google algorithms work, you may not know how to build an online presence others can find using a web search.

Some entrepreneurs find the thought of putting their business online daunting, but with an expert in your corner, it can be simple and hassle-free. Fortunately, there’s a service that can help you find the right talent to create a web presence that really reflects your unique brand: Fiverr is a platform connecting businesses of all sizes with skilled freelancers offering digital services in over 400 categories including graphic design, digital marketing, programming, video and animation. 3 ways to build a lasting dream deck with steel framing

2020-09-02T09:01:00

(BPT) – A recent Houzz survey reports that 1 in 5 homeowners who underwent home renovations in the last year made exterior upgrades to their property. Breaking it down further, 1 in 8 of those weekend warriors funneled their energy into a complete deck overhaul. With the rising popularity of DIY home improvement projects in today’s ever-evolving landscape, these statistics will only continue to climb.

If you’re like Houzz survey respondents, upgrading your outdoor space with a new deck may be the answer to elevating your stay-at-home experience. A deck addition will help you maximize your usable square footage by extending your living area beyond the indoors. And not to worry, when it comes time to sell your home, deck renovations can recoup up to 90% of their cost, according to HGTV’s “Top 15 Home Updates.”

Before your project gets underway, it’s necessary to consider the type of building materials you’ll need to tackle this major upgrade. Your first inclination might be to track down deck board samples from your local home improvement store. While important, make sure not to overlook what kind of foundational materials will support the decking system itself. At one point in time, lumber was the only type of product available for use. However, since lumber typically starts deteriorating after 10 years in service, builders and homeowners alike may want to consider an alternative solution. Light-gauge steel framing, a lasting alternative to short-lived wood framing, can help you create your dream outdoor living space. It will also defend against a spendy decking overhaul later down the road.

Here are three tried-and-true ways steel framing can help you build a dream deck on a foundation that lasts:

1. Lends to longevity

If you’re looking to assemble a long-lasting deck, composite and PVC deck boards are likely at the top of your list, and with good reason. Their UV- and moisture-resistant properties, for one, offer protection from the irreversible effects of weathering. In fact, a growing number of manufacturers now back the performance of their surface boards with impressive 25-year-plus warranties. But why install 25-year deck boards on a frame that is subject to deterioration?

To avoid the headache of replacing your entire deck structure when the wood frame can no longer serve as adequate support, look to steel framing. Light-gauge steel, used in Evolution steel deck framing, offers commercial-grade strength and can last as long as today’s enduring PVC and composite deck boards. What’s more, steel sidelines problems associated with moisture absorption, one of the most common reasons for lumber decomposition. And, because steel doesn’t warp with changes in temperature, the sturdy frame profiles remain straight and true over time. This makes for a more enduring, dimensionally stable solution that keeps deck boards flat and smooth underfoot.

2. Makes safety a top priority

With your deck in use for much of the year, lives are on the line if your deck structure fails. With such high stakes, safety should be top of mind when building your dream deck. Fortunately, building with light-gauge steel allows you to avoid any risk of deterioration that can threaten the integrity of your deck system, including rot and decay from water, fungi and pests.

“When built right, framing is the supporting structure that is unseen and unappreciated. But, if homeowners use an insufficient building material, their entire decking project can be compromised,” said Toby Bostwick, VP of Product and Brand at Fortress Building Products. “The inherent strength and stability of steel framing will support a deck build and ensure a long-lasting foundation that will serve families for years to come.”

You can take additional “steps” towards ensuring the integrity of your deck framing system by integrating a steel deck staircase into your renovation. Steel framing deck structures with a compatible staircase sidelines safety challenges rampant in older decks, such as miscalculations, poor stringers to deck connections and inconsistent rises and runs. These freshly introduced steel stair components and brackets make it possible to marry your deck framing and stairs for one unified build.

3. Supports design freedom

To create a deck with lasting style from the bottom up, look for a manufacturer that offers a comprehensive, ready-to-assemble steel framing system. Whether you’re a weekend warrior or hiring a deck builder, integrated framing products will make it easy for you to construct a dream deck without compromising your family’s safety.

To help you achieve your desired aesthetic, these steel deck framing systems can work with any type or brand of decking, including composite, PVC, aluminum, tile, wood and tropical hardwoods. With this amount of design flexibility, your backyard can look like a continuation of your interior hardwood floor, sweeping your family from indoors to out without interruption.

Dream big and build strong

Ready to turn your dream deck into a reality? Armed with steel deck framing, you can support those beautiful new surface boards for 25-plus years. And in building strong with steel, you will create a deck that invites you to stay home.

Top tips for weathering storm season

2020-09-01T08:01:00

(BPT) – September is the most common month for hurricanes to make U.S. landfall, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, and with severe storms and tornadoes appearing around the country, it is more important than ever to take steps and be prepared before, during and after a storm.

One of the biggest threats during any storm is tree damage.

A tree might seem like it would be able to sustain the forces of a large storm, but whether it is unseen internal damage, wet, unstable ground, or proximity to power lines, trees are vulnerable during severe storms and can present a significant hazard. The following tips from expert arborist and STIHL spokesperson Mark Chisholm can help you protect yourself, your family and your property from a storm.

Before the storm

Develop a relationship with a certified tree care professional. By choosing the right company ahead of time, you’ll likely be prioritized as an existing customer when a storm does hit.

Conduct a pre-storm assessment and identify trouble spots

A pre-storm assessment can help you identify potential hazards on your property such as cracks in tree trunks or major limbs, hollow or decayed trees, limbs extending over a roof, or trees in close proximity to power lines.

Take measures to prevent damage

After assessing possible hazards to your property, consider measures to limit potential damage. Remove dead, diseased or damaged limbs. Inspect leaning trees and consider removing those with large cavities. Prune branches that are too close to your house and over the street, and check your gutters and be sure to remove any debris to prevent water damage. For any work in and around your home, consider calling a professional, and always call a professional to assess and/or remove anything within close proximity to utility lines. Never attempt to do this yourself.

During the storm

Don’t try to be a hero. Your property is not more important than your life. Prepare in advance, follow guidelines for evacuation and shelter.

After the storm

More people are injured after a storm than during one. Storm damaged trees present unique challenges and dangers. Put safety first. Evaluate what you can handle and what’s for a professional — anything not on the ground should definitely be handled by a professional. Some things could be a threat to your life such as large broken or hanging limbs where chainsaw work is needed, or branches that are too close to a utility line. Never approach or attempt to move downed utility lines and report branches close to or touching utility lines immediately.

If you’re skilled enough to do the work yourself, always wear proper attire and protective equipment including boots, gloves, protective glasses, chainsaw protective pants, a helmet system and hearing protection. Never operate a chainsaw from a ladder, roof, in a tree or while standing on any other insecure surface — leave these jobs for the pros.

Evaluate damage

A storm-damaged tree may not have to be removed. Inspect your trees to see if they’re healthy despite storm damage. If at least 50% of the tree’s crown is still intact, and the remaining branches can form a new branch structure, then there is a good chance the tree can be saved.

Repair minor damage & debris

Remove any broken branches, stubs or jagged remains of limbs. Smaller branches should be pruned at the point where they join larger ones. Don’t worry if the tree’s appearance is not perfect.

Chronic pain management can’t wait for the end of the pandemic

2020-09-01T08:01:00

(BPT) – When COVID-19 halted all non-essential health services, it begged the question — what types of care can’t be delayed? Treatment for chronic pain, for one. Not only is pain management essential care, it’s even more critical during stressful times.

The good news is the pandemic has inspired innovations, such as telehealth and minimally invasive treatments for long-lasting pain relief, to help suffering patients, says the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA).

“The anxiety and isolation caused by COVID-19 adds to chronic pain, which is further compounded by reduced access to strategies, such as physical therapy, exercise and even visits with the grandkids or other loved ones, that help people manage their discomfort,” said David Dickerson, M.D., pain medicine specialist and vice chair of ASA’s Committee on Pain Medicine. “As a result, they may be more likely to turn to medications or alcohol, increasing the risk of misuse and abuse. Physician anesthesiologists who specialize in pain medicine have gotten creative to ensure their patients have access to the safest and most effective care.”

Here are three ways pain management changed due to COVID-19.

Greater access to providers through telehealth

When the COVID-19 pandemic suspended in-person visits, physician anesthesiologist pain medicine specialists turned to secure video meetings or telephone calls to consult with patients. Led by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS), health insurance companies revised their coverage to include telehealth to ensure this vital care. Using telehealth visits, pain medicine specialists see the patient face-to-face via video, ask and answer questions and formulate a plan. They can refer those struggling with stress from COVID-19 to psychologists who also can counsel them via telehealth.

Telehealth also removes some barriers to care during a pandemic. Patients don’t need to worry about getting to an appointment, or sitting for long periods in crowded waiting rooms. Via telehealth, they wait in a virtual waiting room in their own home. Specialists can easily access patients’ electronic medical records while talking to them virtually. As a result, 95% of people seeing pain medicine specialists have continued to do so, many of them via telehealth, which likely will remain an option for the foreseeable future.

Pain medicine specialists expand role to meet patients’ needs

During the pandemic, many patients have put off seeing their primary care physicians, so pain medicine specialists have been helping fill that role. They’re getting patients to understand the importance of seeking necessary treatment, such as visiting the emergency room if they are experiencing signs of stroke or angina, a symptom of heart disease.

As in-person medical appointments resume, many pain medicine specialists have revised their office visit practices, requiring masks and staggering appointments, to keep patients safe. Although telehealth remains an option, having the patient come into the office is preferred in some instances. For example, pain medicine specialists can more readily treat those with addiction issues in person. During this national health emergency, the number of patients needing treatment for pancreatitis — painful inflammation of the pancreas often due to excessive alcohol use — has increased dramatically. Early evidence suggests drug overdoses, including those from opioids, may be increasing as well.1

Long-lasting, minimally invasive techniques reduce visits and hospitalizations

To reduce the frequency of visits while keeping patients out of the hospital, pain medicine specialists are focusing on office-based treatments that can ease pain for six months or more. For example, rather than giving patients a series of injections that require regular office visits, pain medicine specialists can perform procedures in one visit. Some of these treatments include a procedure called percutaneous image-guided lumbar decompression (PILD), which reduces pain by removing excess tissue in people with spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal that can compress nerves and cause pain in the back and legs); neurostimulation, in which a device implanted under the skin generates electrical impulses that disrupt pain signals; and radiofrequency ablation or neurolysis, which silences nerves that bring pain signals from inflamed joints or tissue.

“Treatment for debilitating pain is complex in any circumstance and even more so during this health crisis,” said Dr. Dickerson. “Physician anesthesiologists and other pain medicine specialists can ensure proper and effective approaches to care that improve quality of life during the pandemic and beyond.”

Know the facts about pulmonary fibrosis

2020-09-01T07:05:00

(BPT) – Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is a progressive and debilitating disease that leads to scarring of the lungs, with no known cure. Yet, while more than 200,000 Americans are living with the disease, there are still many myths and misconceptions surrounding causes, treatments, diagnosis and more. The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (PFF) is here to set the record straight for September’s Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Month.

Myth #1: Pulmonary fibrosis is a well-known lung disease.

Fact: While over 50,000 new cases are diagnosed annually, awareness of PF remains very low. According to a recent survey conducted by the PFF*, 86% of Americans do not know the symptoms of PF, which include shortness of breath, fatigue and a dry, persistent cough.

“Pulmonary fibrosis has been in the news more because, like COVID-19, it’s a disease that impacts lung performance,” said William Schmidt, president and CEO of the PFF. “By improving understanding of PF, patients will be better able to recognize the early signs and start conversations with their physician.”

Myth #2: Pulmonary fibrosis is easy to diagnose.

Fact: It can be difficult to diagnose PF because many symptoms are similar to those of other illnesses and can appear mild or absent early in the disease process, which can lead to late-stage diagnoses. Other common symptoms of PF include:

  • Weakness
  • Discomfort in the chest
  • Loss of appetite
  • Unexplained weight loss

“It is important to track early warning signs and look for patterns in your symptoms, so doctors can identify appropriate treatments for your condition,” added Schmidt.

Myth #3: No one knows what causes pulmonary fibrosis.

Fact: While there are types of PF that don’t have a known cause, such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), many do. PF with known causes include:

  • Those related to autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or scleroderma.
  • Those related to occupational exposures, such as asbestos.
  • Those related to environmental exposures, such as molds and birds, referred to as hypersensitivity pneumonitis.
  • Those directly related to smoking.
  • Certain medications and radiation therapy can also cause PF.

Several other factors put thousands of Americans at higher risk for PF, such as those over age 60 and those with a family history of interstitial lung disease.

Myth #4: There are no effective treatments for pulmonary fibrosis.

Fact: While it is true that there is no known cure for PF, there are a number of effective treatments.

  • Supportive care treatments, such as supplemental oxygen, medication and pulmonary rehabilitation, can lessen symptoms of cough, shortness of breath or fatigue.
  • For some types of PF, there are medications called “antifibrotics” that can slow down disease progression by about 50% on average.
  • Lung transplantation is a treatment option for advanced PF and is considered on a case-by-case basis.

Myth #5: After diagnosis, patients have 3-5 years to live.

Fact: No one can predict exactly how long a person with PF will live. It’s also impossible to apply a population average such as this to an individual person. There are people with PF who live much longer than 5 years, and, unfortunately, those who don’t live long after a late-stage diagnosis.

Knowing the facts about PF will help promote understanding of the devastating disease, raise funds for vital research, lead to better treatments and ultimately to find a cure.

Five warm weather tips for people living with Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease

2020-08-31T13:01:00

(BPT) – In the United States, there are an estimated 140,000 adults living with Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease, or ADPKD.

This is a rare, inherited, genetic disease that causes cysts to form in kidneys and progressively grow over time. As the cysts grow, a person’s kidney function gradually declines. This may eventually result in kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant. In addition, complications from this disease can include high blood pressure, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, infected or bleeding cysts, abdominal pain or discomfort and chronic pain.

ADPKD is the most common form of polycystic kidney disease, making up about 90 percent of all cases. It is the leading cause of inherited kidney disease and fourth-leading cause overall of end-stage renal disease.

Increased risks related to warm weather

The kidneys play a unique role in protecting the body from dehydration. When warm weather is upon us, it is important to remember that higher temperatures can pose health risks for people with ADPKD.

As temperatures rise, so too does the risk of hospitalizations for people with kidney diseases, such as ADPKD, due to acute kidney injury — which can also be referred to as acute renal failure. One reason for this is that increased temperatures can make blood pressure rise. People with ADPKD are at an increased risk of having high blood pressure (hypertension) as compared to patients with other types of renal disease. This also puts them at risk for cardiovascular disease.

Five tips for managing ADPKD in warm weather

Meyeon Park, MD, MAS, Director of the UCSF Polycystic Kidney Disease Center of Excellence and Nephrologist, University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine, recommends the following strategies for managing ADPKD in warmer weather.

“I recommend that people with kidney diseases, such as ADPKD, have an informed conversation with their healthcare team,” says Meyeon Park, MD, MAS, Director of the UCSF Polycystic Kidney Disease Center of Excellence and Nephrologist, University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine. “I offer five tips for effective management strategies that are easy to remember and help people take a more active role in maintaining their health, while enjoying the warmer weather.”

  1. Talk to a healthcare provider to establish a baseline for daily healthy fluid intake, based on individual needs and likely exposure to hotter temperatures, to avoid fluid overload or dehydration.
  2. Keep cool during very hot days in air-conditioned spaces, if possible. It is important that patients with ADPKD limit their time outdoors and stay in the shade to avoid perspiring and increasing thirst. This recommendation should be tempered by concerns about COVID-19 and a priority in this unusual time is maintaining safety from exposure to this virus, which may be more easily transmitted in indoor environments.
  3. Exercise regularly to continue to maintain overall health and well-being, which can help improve kidney health. A daily walk in the evening, especially after dinner, is a great option.
  4. Eat a healthy and balanced diet in order to maintain a healthy weight. For patients with ADPKD, a diet low in salt and moderate in calories is recommended but patients should speak with their healthcare team about what is right for them.
  5. Adhere to management strategies as recommended by a patient’s healthcare provider and care team.

5 simple ways to support teachers all year long

2020-08-31T07:01:00

(BPT) – A love of learning and a passion for children is what makes teachers special. As COVID-19 impacted schools across the country earlier this year, teachers proved their agility in shifting gears quickly to teach students as effectively as possible. Now schools begin the 2020-21 school year, and teachers again are critical in shaping children’s education during uncertain times.

Whether your community’s schools are welcoming students back in person, online or a mix of both, it’s the teachers who have the hard work of making school a positive experience no matter the circumstances. This year in particular, it’s critical to support teachers to position them for success so students can thrive. Consider these five steps in supporting teachers and showing you care.

Add extra supplies: Go beyond the supplies list and buy extras for the teacher. This might be adding extra glue sticks and pencils, or, making a teacher’s care basket with personal items like hand lotion, sanitizing wipes, tea and coffee, stickers, etc. What’s more, remember that supplies are needed all school year long. At the start of school the supply closet is bursting, but a few months later it might be sparse. A mid-year supply drop-off is sure to be appreciated. You might even consider running a supply drive to help teachers in need throughout the year.

Ask about volunteer opportunities: In-person volunteer opportunities may be limited or unavailable right now, so be proactive and ask teachers about virtual or distance volunteering options. You might be able to lead a virtual story time, organize a book club, help by checking digital papers, dropping off items at students’ homes and much more. Simply reach out to your teacher to show your willingness to help and you can discuss volunteer opportunities that match your skills and interests. Beyond the classroom, check out volunteer opportunities at libraries, study halls, community centers and more.

Vote to fund a cause: Whether it’s to support a local school teacher or to fund a cause close to your heart, a simple online vote can help make a difference. SONIC’s Limeades for Learning Fall Voting campaign takes place Sept. 28, 2020, through Oct. 25, 2020. During this four-week campaign, visit LimeadesforLearning.com to vote for teacher projects you want to support. You can search by keyword or category to choose projects that are meaningful to you. At the end of each week SONIC funds the winning projects, donating a total of $1 million.

Stay up to date: Being informed not only helps you understand what’s happening in your student’s world, it helps you be a more engaged partner in their education. Teachers appreciate parents and caregivers who stay up to date by reading grade newsletters promptly, checking emails from the school often and visiting classroom websites or social media pages regularly. Additionally, consider attending school board meetings, even if it’s virtually, so you know what’s happening in the district.

Practice patience and understanding: The 2020-21 school year contains a lot of unknowns. Whether it’s in-person, virtual or hybrid, remember to practice patience and understanding with educators as they navigate these new waters. Everyone is in this together and teachers are doing their best. Remember, the attitude you project about school is what your children will reflect, so make sure to stay positive and make the best of any situation as the year unfolds.

Simple steps for healthier, more vibrant skin during menopause

2020-08-31T08:31:00

(BPT) – Lower levels of estrogen and collagen during menopause can cause dehydration, which leads to thinning, sagging, fine wrinkling and dryness, accelerating changes to the skin from head to toe. Houston-based Dermatologist Elizabeth Mullans, M.D., and Yale OB/GYN Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., offer the latest interventions for skin-related effects of aging.

Menopause begins approximately a year after a woman’s last period, and some may think their go-to skin routine doesn’t work anymore as they are now seeing dull, dry skin. It’s that time in life for a new skin care routine to combat and lessen the effects of natural aging.

Decreased estrogen levels can cause the vulva, or outside skin surrounding the vagina, to become dry too, causing irritation when walking, prolonged sitting, exercising, bike riding or running. If you are experiencing painful sex or itching and irritation following sex, your internal vaginal cells could be dry too.

Here are a few simple steps you can take to achieve healthier, more vibrant skin all over the body:

1) Clean your face twice a day with a gentle, creamy cleanser like Cetaphil or CeraVe for dry, sensitive skin. Conventional soap, foams and gels can strip away moisture and remove the skin’s protective barrier against bacteria which helps keep it soft, supple and hydrated. A new Italian cleansing cream called Collagenil Detergente Restitutivo is very gentle as it nourishes the skin, leaving it smooth and radiant. It’s always helpful to apply heavier moisturizing cream to damp skin to help boost hydration.

2) Sun damage and hormonal changes can exacerbate wrinkles, dryness and age spots. Make sure to moisturize several times a day and use a good sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Exfoliating products can help shed dead skin cells, which can leave the skin dull and flaky. Collagenil created Soft-Scrub Detergente, a delicate vegetable-based cleansing cream that rolls on to gently exfoliate and remove dead cells and impurities without scratching or irritating the skin.

3) Eat as much collagen as possible with lots of brightly colored fruits, green vegetables and nuts. These foods contain antioxidants and healthy fats, which help nourish and hydrate skin and temporarily improve its firmness and plumpness. Watch out for dairy, sugary processed foods and carbs that can contribute to acne.

4) vitafusion Irresistible Skin gives a beauty boost from the inside out. One serving of these gummy vitamins provides 2,500 mcg of collagen and antioxidants vitamin A and vitamin E, to support hydration, elasticity, nourishment, healthy glow and appearance of fine lines.

5) Yoga, meditation and other stress-reduction techniques boost circulation, which begins to slow with age. The extra oxygen and blood flow can help skin look brighter and healthier.

6) Sex, whether with a partner or masturbation, will improve blood flow and help maintain healthy tissue. Consider using a good silicone vaginal lubricant, like Replens Silky Smooth, to decrease abrasion and increase pleasure.

7) Get more zzzzz’s, at least six to eight hours per night, to help your body rejuvenate and maintain healthy hormone and metabolism levels.

8) Vaginal dryness can be caused by cancer treatment, diabetes, peri-menopause and post-menopause. Hormone-free Replens Moisturizer, which can be inserted every three days, is a first-line treatment for vaginal dryness.

9) Avoid scented feminine hygiene sprays, pads, tampons and toilet paper.

10) Avoid shaving or waxing the genital area, particularly if irritation is present.

11) Gently wash the vulva with plain water, a vaginal wash or an aqueous cream and avoid liquid soap, bubble bath and shower gels. Always pat dry (don’t rub).

12) If vaginal atrophy persists or worsens, you may need a prescription vaginal estrogen to get your symptoms under control.

Dryness due to aging skin is absolutely normal, and women can seek comfort in knowing how to change their beauty routine to accommodate each changing lifecycle.
