For Many Young People, 2021 is the Year to Cancel Vaping

2021-02-22T13:39:00

(BPT) – TikTok influencers Victoria Annunziato (aka King Victober), Tosha and Jerry Purpdrank have a lot in common. They have millions of subscribers. They vape. And they want to quit using e-cigarettes and encourage others to do the same, by sharing their personal experiences in real time with their millions of followers.

Victoria, Tosha and Jerry are joining the 60% of young e-cigarette users surveyed who stated they want to quit vaping in 2021. Of course, quitting vaping isn’t easy. Fortunately, the same survey from Truth Initiative shines a light on what can help young people looking to leave vaping behind in 2020.

According to the same survey from Truth Initiative, more than 40% of those seeking to quit said a social media support system and connecting with influencers on their own quitting journeys would help. Even more — 51% — said texting would also help them quit.

That’s why truth®, the national youth smoking, vaping, and nicotine prevention campaign from Truth Initiative, partnered with Victoria, Tosha and Jerry as part of its new campaign, Quit Together. The goal: meet young people where they are on social media to help them reach their quitting goals.

It’s a first-of-its-kind quitting effort. And everyone’s invited.

Victoria, Tosha and Jerry are asking their millions of followers to join them in using This is Quitting, the first-of-its-kind, free and anonymous text message quit vaping program from truth, created specifically for youth and young adults.

Already being used by more than 250,000 young people, This is Quitting offers a proven, judgment-free way for young e-cigarette users to get help if they are looking to quit vaping. Data show that just two weeks into the program, more than 60% of users reported they had reduced or stopped using e-cigarettes. Young vapers can sign up and start finding help by texting DITCHVAPE to 88709.

Quit Together’s influencers began posting their videos to TikTok on Jan. 8, announcing their intentions to quit. Since then, they’ve continued posting updates about their experiences, sharing advice and support from This is Quitting, giving their followers encouragement to quit, and sharing milestones together along the way. They are also speaking directly to the health effects of e-cigarettes, including the impact on anxiety and lung health, and the importance of having support from friends and family while quitting.

Reversing a toxic cultural trend

Vaping used to be seen as cool. But times have changed. As influencer Victoria Annunziato says, “Like many others, I started using e-cigarettes when I was young. I had no idea what nicotine was or how addictive it could be. I want to use my platform and work with truth to start a conversation about my own experience, so others can avoid the traps that got me hooked or quit with me if they are already vaping. I’m hopeful that my journey will inspire others and spread awareness.”

Time is of the essence. Alarming evidence continues to show that vaping harms lung health and can make young people more vulnerable to COVID-19. This includes research from Stanford University that shows teens and young adults who have vaped may be up to five times more likely to test positive for the virus than their non-vaping peers. The numbers are even worse for those who smoke both regular and e-cigarettes.

Fortunately, young people have taken note. Truth initiative survey data show that nearly half of 15- to 24-year-olds responded that the pandemic has prompted them to look for information about quitting (48%) or talk to someone about quitting (45%).

This is what support culture looks like

It’s not just e-cigarette users who are helping one another quit.

Influencer Christian DelGrosso, a non-vaping friend of Jerry Purpdrank, is also lending his support as part of the campaign. He said, “For anyone trying to quit, having their friends stand alongside them can be an important part of their success. By supporting Jerry on his journey, I’m also supporting any young person who is taking a step to quit.”

truth is also producing a limited YouTube series titled “Quitters” that highlights real This is Quitting users on their quit journey. Viewers will be able to follow along and join This is Quitting to help them make vaping a thing of the past in 2021.

Is it allergies or COVID-19? 7 symptoms to watch

2021-02-23T00:01:00

(BPT) – COVID-19 is complicating the 2021 spring allergy season. From watery eyes to dry coughs, people are left wondering exactly what their symptoms mean.

“Many people are asking about the differences between COVID-19 and seasonal allergies,” says Dr. Luz Fonacier, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). “While it isn’t always cut and dried, there are some clear differences. Certain symptoms are only seen in one or the other.”

If you are unsure what is ailing you, Fonacier suggests checking with a professional. “Allergists are the best trained medical professionals to diagnose and treat allergies and asthma,” she said. “When in doubt, talk to an allergist.”

To help shed some light on the differences between COVID-19 and spring allergies, here are seven common symptoms and their possible causes.

1) Coughing, chest tightness and shortness of breath are the calling cards of COVID-19. Unfortunately, these symptoms may also indicate an asthma-like allergic response. Many people who suffer from asthma also have allergies. If you are coughing this spring, consider the context. Is shortness of breath something you have experienced during previous springs? Do you have additional symptoms, like fever or itchy eyes? The answers to these questions will help you distinguish the root cause.

2) Fever does NOT occur with spring allergies. Fever may indicate COVID-19, the flu or — more rarely — the common cold. The combination of fever, coughing, shortness of breath and loss of smell or taste is a strong indicator of COVID-19 and must be taken seriously.

3) Chills happen when the blood vessels in your skin constrict, causing you to feel cold without an obvious cause. Allergies do not cause chills, but COVID-19 does. If you are experiencing mild chills it is a good idea to self-isolate as a precaution. If you are experiencing chills in combination with shortness of breath, call your doctor to see if you should be tested for COVID-19.

4) Sneezing and runny nose are rarely seen in COVID-19 cases. They are, however, very common for allergy sufferers. If the spring has left you sneezing and sniffling in the past, then seasonal allergies are still the most likely culprit in 2021. You can talk to a board-certified allergist about treatment options, which may include over-the-counter or prescription medication, or immunotherapy.

5) Itchy, watery eyes are the signature symptom of seasonal allergies. COVID-19 does not cause itchy eyes, but the practice of staying home may help by reducing your exposure to pollen. Avoidance, or the strategy of staying away from potential allergens, may help decrease symptoms. If avoidance is not cutting it, it may be time to speak with an allergist. The ACAAI makes connecting with an allergist simple on their Find an Allergist page.

6) Loss of smell or taste is another very common symptom of COVID-19. While allergies may lead to mild loss of smell, it is best to be on the safe side while the coronavirus is still spreading. If you experience this symptom, call your doctor for advice.

7) Nausea or vomiting are not allergy symptoms. They may indicate the common cold, the flu or COVID-19. If this symptom is mild then self-isolating is a good course of action. If it becomes severe, and particularly if it is accompanied by fever and shortness of breath, you should call your doctor. They will be able to advise you on whether to get tested or seek medical help.

Understanding the differences between COVID-19 and seasonal allergies is key to keeping healthy this spring. Stay on top of the season by knowing your symptoms and knowing what is typical for you. Prostate Cancer Screenings on the Decline with Concerns Surrounding COVID-19: What Men Should Know

2021-02-22T10:01:01

(BPT) – In the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic, many areas of the country banned nonessential medical procedures in an effort to slow the spread of the disease. As a result, many physicians saw fewer patients for routine medical care, such as physical exams and screenings. A recent survey by The Physicians Foundation polled 3,513 physicians and found 41% saw volume decreases of 26% or more in their practices.[1]

The impact on cancer screenings was even more profound. For example, screenings for prostate cancer — one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in men in the United States — dropped by 56% by the peak of the pandemic in April according to a recent study published in JCO Clinical Cancer Informatics. The study used a large medical claims clearinghouse database representing 5-7% of the Medicare fee-for-service population to characterize changes in the utilization of cancer care services and gain insight into the impact of COVID-19 on the U.S. cancer population.[2],[3]

“Last year, we saw many patients deciding to either reschedule or completely forgo preventative care in our office to avoid the risk of COVID-19 infection,” said Neal Shore, M.D., F.A.C.S., Medical Director, Carolina Urologic Research Center. “There was also a noticeable decline in the number of prostate cancer screens we conducted which, as a physician treating men with this cancer on a daily basis, makes me concerned that prostate cancer may not be detected in its earlier stages when outcomes are typically better for the patient.”

In the case of localized prostate cancer, the five-year relative survival rate is estimated to be 100 percent after diagnosis, according to the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) database.[3] For advanced prostate cancer types, such as metastatic castration-sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC), which is prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body and responds to treatment to lower testosterone or castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), which is prostate cancer that no longer responds to treatment to lower testosterone, the outlook is not as good. According to the same SEER analysis, only about 30 percent of men diagnosed with mCSPC will survive five years post-diagnosis and other studies have shown that men with CRPC have a median survival of between 9 and 30 months.[3],[4] This contrast in survival outcomes highlights why early prostate cancer detection is so critical.

In advanced prostate cancer treatment, a goal is to slow the spread of cancer cells in the body. All men have hormones known as androgens (the most common androgen is testosterone), which can fuel prostate cancer growth. For those with metastatic CSPC and CRPC, physicians may prescribe a treatment called a novel hormone therapy. These therapies interfere with the connection between androgens and androgen receptors. This can help slow cancer cell spread. Novel hormone therapies are paired with another treatment called androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) which reduces the total amount of testosterone in the body. Together, these therapies work to slow the spread of prostate cancer.[5]

XTANDI® (enzalutamide), a prescription treatment approved by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is an example of one of these novel hormone therapies, and is just one potential treatment option that patients can discuss with their doctors. XTANDI is FDA-approved to treat three forms of advanced prostate cancer: mCSPC (prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body and responds to a hormone therapy or surgical treatment to lower testosterone), nmCRPC (prostate cancer that has not spread to other parts of the body and no longer responds to a hormone therapy or surgical treatment to lower testosterone) and mCRPC (prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body and no longer responds to a hormone therapy or surgical treatment to lower testosterone). XTANDI may cause serious side effects, including seizure, a condition involving the brain called Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome (PRES), allergic reactions, heart disease, and falls and fractures, and more. See Important Safety Information below, and talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

“While my goal is to detect prostate cancer as early as possible, this does not always happen, particularly with ongoing concerns around COVID-19 delaying periodic check-ups,” continued Dr. Shore. “When a man does present with or progress to mCSPC or CRPC, there are treatment options like XTANDI they can discuss with their healthcare providers.”

While COVID-19 continues to be a concern for many men across the country, organizations like the American Cancer Society recommend talking to your provider who can discuss whether screening is recommended and help balance the risk and benefits of being screened now or postponing. Dreaming of adventure? There’s a Uganda safari for everyone

2021-02-22T11:01:01

(BPT) – What gets your heart racing when you imagine traveling? Challenging yourself physically in a beautiful landscape, or catching a glimpse of magnificent wildlife and rare birds? Soaring above it all while admiring spectacular scenery from on high, or soaking in the environment from the water? Fortunately, there is one destination in Africa where you can experience the adventure of a lifetime — no matter what thrills you. Coined the “Pearl of Africa” by none other than Winston Churchill, Uganda has the perfect safari for every type of adventurous traveler.

1. It’s a jungle out there

… And a savanna, plus forests and wetlands. Uganda boasts 10 amazing national parks along with numerous nature reserves where you can enjoy guided safaris to locate big game like lions, leopards, rhinoceros, elephants and buffalo — not to mention giraffes, zebras, chimpanzees, hippopotamuses and crocodiles. Uganda’s extraordinary natural attractions include the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains, the expansive Lake Victoria and the stunning Murchison Falls.

2. A walk on the wild side

Prefer to take in natural beauty at a slower pace? You can enjoy walking safaris and nature walks at a number of locations throughout Uganda, led by experienced rangers who provide insight on the abundant wildlife and striking landscapes. Uganda is the home of over half the globe’s population of endangered mountain gorillas. Trekking to observe these gentle giants in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a top “bucket list” activity for wildlife enthusiasts.

3. Whatever floats your boat

Outdoor lovers can choose from a variety of activities on the mighty Nile River ranging from relaxing to adrenaline inducing. Sport fishing expeditions, whitewater rafting experiences and safaris by boat are some of the most popular options, with qualified tour operators offering packages ranging from budget to luxury. A visit to Murchison Falls National Park lets you observe wildlife from a variety of vantage points. A traditional game drive can be paired with a Nile River safari for the ultimate adventure. The three-hour boat trip yields sightings of everything from hippos and crocodiles to elephants, giraffes, buffalo and plenty of birds. Avid fishermen visit the park in search of the Nile Perch, Africa’s largest freshwater fish. Weighing anywhere from 20-180 pounds, these impressive creatures provide a challenging catch.

4. The sky’s the limit

If your bucket list includes going up, up and away in a beautiful balloon, you will love the experience of viewing Uganda’s unique topography on a hot air balloon safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Your trip may last anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes, weather permitting, and will also include a delicious bush breakfast.

5. These safaris are for the birds

Amateur to expert birders can add some of the rarest birds in the world to their checklist, as over half of Africa’s bird species are found in Uganda. A birding safari led by an expert guide can help travelers identify as many as 200 species in a single day. Of the 1,072 bird species in the country, the top sought-after species include the shoebill, a prehistoric-looking creature known for its enormous bill; Shelley’s Crimsonwing, Africa’s rarest finch; and the crested crane, Uganda’s national bird.

6. A breakaway adventure

For true adventurers, getting to know the beauty of Uganda by bicycle is an experience like no other. Mountain biking in Uganda can be leisurely or challenging, with excursions ranging from a few hours to several days or more. No matter the location, bicycle tours are a great way to take in some of the country’s most breathtaking scenery.

7. Get on your horse and ride

Whether at a walk or a gallop, visitors seeking a different vantage point can explore Uganda on guided horseback tours along the banks of the Nile River near Jinga — Uganda’s adventure capital. Plenty of options exist on horseback, from hour-long excursions and sunset rides to overnight adventures and even weeklong explorations of rural Uganda.

5 eye-opening ways a strong credit score can help build wealth

2021-02-19T10:31:00

(BPT) – You may check your bank balance daily, your savings accounts regularly and you probably know roughly how much cash is in your wallet. But if someone asked you what your credit score is, would you be able to answer? Your credit score is an important tool in building wealth in ways you may not even realize, so it’s important to not only know what it is, but take proactive steps to maintain it.

“A credit score is more than just a number; it’s one of the main keys to financial success,” says Barrett Burns, president and CEO at VantageScore Solutions, a credit score model developer used across auto, banking and credit card industries. “Benefits of a good score go far beyond qualifying for a loan to really help build wealth now and in the future.”

Burns shares five ways a strong credit score can help you transform your finances and position yourself for success throughout life:

Qualify for a mortgage

Many financial experts agree that a mortgage is a key strategy to build wealth long term. With a strong credit score, you can qualify for a mortgage, which helps you get the home you want and start building equity. You’ll also qualify at a lower rate with a rich credit history of on-time payments and positive debt management.

Access premium credit cards

Some credit cards are selective on who qualifies. This is because they may have a special program with exclusive offers, cash-back and other rewards that can add up fast. When you have a good credit report you are more likely to qualify for the best credit cards for your personal needs so you can optimize your personal finances.

Receive better interest rates

Shop around, different lenders could give you different rates. When you have a good credit score, you may qualify for much better terms on loans. That lowers interest rates on things like car loans. Depending on the size and length of the loan, a low interest rate can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars over the life of the loan.

Get negotiating power

Don’t like the loan terms offered to you? When your credit score is high and you have a good credit history, you have leverage to try to negotiate better loan terms, including lower interest rates. Ask for better terms noting your great credit score and let the lenders make you a deal.

Have options during emergencies

Sometimes the unexpected happens and can throw your finances off track. Having a good credit score can help you leverage financial options that you may not have access to otherwise. This can relieve stress and help you avoid losing any more money than necessary.

VantageScore credit scoring models provide lenders and consumers with highly predictive credit scores that are easier to understand and score more people. You can access yours for free through the providers at vantagescore.com.

Plant-based recipe swaps for meat-free Fridays and meatless Mondays

2021-02-19T07:01:00

(BPT) – Whether it be for health, the environment or religious practices like Lent, there are so many reasons why people look for meatless alternatives. But meatless doesn’t mean flavorless, and you don’t have to stick to salads or fish.

Fortunately, there are now delicious plant-based products, like Incogmeato™ by MorningStar Farms®, that look, cook and taste just like meat. You can easily swap them into your favorite recipes to make plant-based meals that are meatless, but just as flavorful.

If you’re looking for ways to keep meat-free meals flavorful, chef and TV host Elena Besser is showing fans why Incogmeato is the answer. It’s 100% plant-based protein that still provides the meaty flavors you love without the actual meat. Your taste buds won’t even know the difference.

Incogmeato has a variety of delicious, plant-based options that serve as an easy swap for all of your favorite meals. The versatile line-up — including burger patties, plant-based ground, chik’n nuggets and more — allows you to create meatless — but still delicious — versions of family favorite recipes such as beef-like tacos, spaghetti bolognese and even chik’n and waffles.

Whether seeking out flavor for Fridays during Lent or needing some inspiration to stick with your meat-free Monday goals, options are plentiful with Incogmeato. Besser shares two of her favorite recipes using Incogmeato to transform dishes into meatless versions:

Incogmeato Plant-based Patty Melts

Active time: 20 minutes
Total time: 30 minutes
Serves: 2

Besser tries to do her best to integrate plant-based protein into her diet rather than just reaching for meat, but she knows that, sometimes, you just want a burger. On the days when she wants to fix that craving, Besser reaches for Incogmeato. Their plant-based Burger Patties are the perfect swap for this patty melt recipe. They’re juicy and they taste just like meat.

Ingredients:

6 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 large onion, halved and thinly sliced
kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
7-8 dashes Worcestershire
2 tablespoons neutral oil
1 package Incogmeato burger patties
4 slices seeded rye bread
4 slices Swiss cheese

Directions:

Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, season with salt and pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions have softened and begin to caramelize, about 15-20 minutes. Add 7-8 dashes of Worcestershire sauce and stir to combine. Remove from heat and set aside.

On a separate clean skillet, add neutral oil and bring to a medium-high heat. Season one side of the patties with salt and pepper. Once the oil is shimmering, add the patties, seasoned side down, and cook for 4 minutes until golden and crisp. Season the tops of the patties with salt and pepper, flip, and cook for another 4 minutes. Set aside.

Wipe out the skillet, add 2 tablespoon of butter and melt over medium heat. Add 2 slices of bread. Top with cheese, patties, caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and finally top them with the remaining bread. Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the bottoms of the bread are golden-brown and the cheese is starting to melt. Flip, add 2 more tablespoons of butter, and cook an additional 2-3 minutes until both sides are golden brown.

Remove from the heat and serve immediately. Enjoy!

Incogmeato Plant-Based Stuffed peppers

Active time: 10 minutes
Total time: 40 minutes
Serves: 4-6

Besser has a big family and some of her siblings follow a vegetarian diet. Sometimes it can seem like a challenge to find tasty things to cook that everyone will love. But now that there’s Incogmeato, she can make the exact same meat-centric dish for everyone without any meat at all. Incogmeato plant-based Ground is especially versatile, acting as a perfect meatless alternative for these vegetarian stuffed peppers.

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for drizzling
1 package Incogmeato Pound of Ground
2 cups cooked white rice
1 medium beefsteak tomato, diced
1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
2 cups shredded cheese (Mexican Blend, Cheddar, Monterey Jack or Mozzarella)
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 fresh lime (optional)
4 bell peppers, halved lengthwise, seeds and membranes removed
2 scallions, thinly sliced on a bias (optional)
Fresh cilantro, for garnish (optional)

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Add olive oil to a skillet over a medium heat. Once shimmering, add the pound of ground and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until small pieces are formed and the meat is cooked through, about 5-6 minutes.

Place pepper halves into an oven-safe baking dish, cut sides up.

In a large bowl, combine the cooked Incogmeato meat, rice, tomato, black beans, and 1 cup shredded cheese. Season with salt and pepper and toss to combine. Divide the mixture evenly among pepper halves. Drizzle with more olive oil, cover with tin foil and bake in the oven for 30 minutes. Remove the foil, sprinkle with remaining cheese and bake for 10 minutes more.

Garnish with lime wedges or juice, scallions, and fresh cilantro. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Cook’s notes: can swap lime for 1-2 tablespoons lime juice.

Ready to give something new a try?

Fish might be the default protein during Lent, but this year, plant-based Incogmeato is a more flexible — and more flavorful — way to go meat-free on Fridays. Try these two recipes and follow @Incogmeato on Twitter and @IncogmeatoUS on Facebook and Instagram and share how you’re using Incogmeato as a Lent-friendly swap for your favorite dishes.

KBIS 2021: Top kitchen and bath design trends to watch

2021-02-19T00:08:43

(BPT) – Do you want to know what’s popular for kitchen and bath spaces for 2021? There’s no better barometer for the biggest trends than the annual Kitchen and Bath Industry Show, where top designers and brands gather to hobnob about the year’s leading innovations and trends.

Although KBIS was virtual this year, there are plenty of exciting trends that homeowners will want to see as they plan their home improvement and interior design projects:

Purposeful designs: Today’s designs can’t just look good; they need to stand up to the high demands of busy households. For example, luxury kitchen brand Signature Kitchen Suite blends innovation and high-end design with a brand new — and highly customizable — undercounter convertible drawer refrigerator. Precise temperatures make this the perfect way to maintain the freshness and integrity of foods, with six temperature zones — pantry, fridge, bar, seafood, meat or freezer settings — flexing from -7 to 50 degrees independently in each drawer.

Hands-free options for cleaner spaces: With a focus on cleanliness, touchless options are being seen in countless products. If it can be hands-free, it’s in demand in 2021. Hands-free options are more user-friendly than ever before, with motion-control lights and smart home features that make living easy and limit the spread of germs. Even self-closing lids are becoming common, making it easier to live well and minimize contact.

Space-saving appliances: With more time being spent at home, space is at a premium. Bulky appliances have given way to space-saving counterparts that don’t skimp on performance. For example, the LG STUDIO WashTower’s single-unit, vertical design makes the most of space efficiency while tackling ultra-large loads to deliver a complete clean in under 30 minutes — all with a sleek, streamlined design. Plus, the convenient center control panel is positioned with both washer and dryer controls in the middle so it’s easy to reach.

Built-in intelligence: From precision-baking ovens to intelligent, fabric-detecting washers, homes are getting smarter than ever. The new LG STUDIO WashTower has built-in intelligence that uses sensors to detect fabric texture and load size, and then automatically selects the right wash motions, temperatures and more for precision fabric care. With Smart Pairing, the washer can even tell the dryer the right compatible drying cycle.

Millions Face Uncertainty in Navigating Unemployment Benefits and Tax Filing

2021-02-18T12:01:00

(BPT) – With 2021 underway, Americans are still coping with the monumental impact the COVID-19 pandemic had on the economy last year. According to a study from the Pew Research Center, more than 40% of Americans lost their jobs or faced reduced wages in 2020. Many of them may have received unemployment benefits for the first time, not realizing those benefits are taxable as federal income and, in many states, also taxable income.

For the majority of Americans, their financial confidence for the year is tied to their tax outcomes, and surprises at tax time can shake that confidence. Now, those experiencing unemployment or dealing with the stress of making ends meet are facing new financial complexities and uncertainties in filing their 2020 taxes and, potentially, an unexpected outcome. A recent study by H&R Block uncovered 56% of Americans have more tax questions than last year due to the pandemic, with unemployment topping the list. To help with the increased confusion, H&R Block is offering many ways to navigate pandemic-induced tax complexities with help that blends digital services with human expertise and care.

The experts at H&R Block are ready to answer any questions tax filers have. In fact, here are the top questions people had in the survey, along with answers.

Q: Do I need to file taxes if I’ve been unemployed?

A: It depends on your specific situation. Even if you don’t have an income over the $12,400 single filing threshold, you may still need to file a return. The state sends a copy of your 1099-G to the IRS, meaning they have a record of your unemployment income. If you receive a 1099-G and don’t file a return, you are likely to get a letter from the IRS. Filing can allow you to recover any federal taxes withheld over the amount you owed. Filing also helps you determine if you are eligible for credits like the earned income credit, or additional child tax credit, and for people with educational expenses, the American opportunity credit. These credits can increase your refund even if you aren’t required to file.

You can get help navigating the impacts of unemployment benefits on your tax situation by working with an H&R Block tax pro virtually, in an office, or online. Understanding your situation and the next steps is easier when you have experts who know the impacts on your situation.

Q: Do I have to pay taxes on unemployment income?

A: Many people don’t realize unemployment benefits are taxable. You might not have known taxes can be withheld when you signed up for benefits or you may have opted not to withhold taxes. Either way, make sure you understand your current situation — evaluate income from earlier in the year and any taxes withheld — and use that knowledge to create a plan for your new outcome. Tax calculators can help you understand how much you owed in taxes for 2020, allowing you to make a plan for 2021 taxes.

Q: How does unemployment impact my refund?

A: Without withholding taxes from unemployment benefits, it is possible to be surprised by a tax bill or a significantly reduced refund. However, a reduced income or unemployment during 2020 may also mean you can receive stimulus payments you didn’t receive because your income was too high in the form of a recovery rebate credit on your tax return. Depending on your situation, the credit could increase your refund or reduce your taxes owed.

Another important thing to know is that a reduction in income may mean you are now eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit for the first time. For those who qualify, it can be a substantial credit. H&R Block has the expertise you need to get all the credits and deductions you deserve, whether you want to file with the help of a tax pro or on your own through online with H&R Block Free Online which includes unemployment tax forms.

Workplace reopening? 5 ways to put employee safety first

2021-02-18T14:55:26

(BPT) – Of all the milestones in our nation’s COVID-19 recovery, workplaces reopening is one of the biggest. As millions of people start returning to offices, classrooms and more, the hope of progress is tempered by concerns for safety. Everyone deserves to feel safe at work. How can employers help make that happen?

The key is planning ahead, says Christopher Gill, vice president of EnviroPro Solutions. “Having enough supplies, the right equipment and clear information — all of these are important. They do more than just keep the workplace safe and sanitized. They help employees feel confident about returning.”

Here are 5 easy steps employers can take to help build trust and stay safe.

Pick up plenty of PPE. The bare minimum should include disposable masks and hand sanitizer. Depending on the sanitizing steps your business is taking, gloves and goggles may also be necessary. Designate a clear responsible party who will be in charge of tracking supplies and re-ordering.

Post or share information on the supplies available, where employees can access them and who to report any shortages or concerns to.

Re-assess restrooms. Restrooms should always be well-stocked with soap, hot water and paper towels. Increase the frequency at which restrooms are checked for supplies and sanitized. This is even more important if your facility’s restrooms are open to the public.

For large restrooms, consider closing off some stalls and sinks to limit the areas that require frequent sanitizing. Placing out-of-order signs can help deter use. Post clear instructions for handwashing — it should be done for at least 30 seconds with hot water and soap.

Scale back shared spaces. Shared spaces may mean break rooms, employee kitchens, copy rooms, lobbies, supply closets or more. If any of these spaces aren’t strictly necessary, consider closing them off. This will discourage congregating and limit the areas that need frequent sanitization. For shared spaces that stay open, limit furniture and supplies to the absolute essentials. This may mean reducing seating and tables, or removing communal dishware.

It’s also vital to establish clear expectations for sanitizing shared spaces before and after every use. Prominently post and share sanitizing guidelines with all staff. Include information on where sanitizing equipment will be stored and how it can be accessed and used. To help ensure everyone follows guidelines, look for a sanitizing solution that’s fast and easy-to-use, like electrostatic sprayers from enviroprosolutions.com, made by Victory or Graco.

Sick? Stay home. Wherever possible, encourage employees to stay home or work from home if:

  • They are experiencing any symptoms of illness.
  • They suspect they may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19.
  • They have just returned from traveling.
  • There have been any changes to their household, such as a child returning from college.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) provides guidelines for length of self-quarantines and more in their Guidance for Businesses & Employees page.

Provide proper equipment. Empowering employees is the best strategy for building trust. When it comes to sanitization, providing individual sanitizing tools is a terrific way to empower. Some companies offer kits to keep multiple employees in-stock at once, such as the Millennium Q Viral Disinfecting Kit. When every employee has their own set of supplies, they can take full responsibility for the safety of their workspace.

Even with shared workstations, having dedicated sets of sanitizing tools is highly effective. Post or share clear instructions on how to sanitize and the necessary frequency. Particularly for shared workstations, it’s advisable for employees to sanitize before and after every shift.

After more than a year at home for some workers, returning to the workplace is an enormous step. Emotions may be running high, and it’s up to employers to set a positive example and tone. Making your dedication to safety clear and tangible will boost employee confidence, all while keeping your workforce healthy.
