Creating a naturally healthy home

2021-02-09T13:23:00

(BPT) – The pandemic has changed the way many of us think and feel about home. More than ever, it has become a place of refuge, safety and comfort in an uncertain world. The need for our dwellings to be sources of both physical and emotional well-being has never been stronger. Architects and designers looking to maximize the unique and personal qualities of a residence — the subtle factors that turn it from a house into a home — have long recognized that specifying wood offers a natural means of achieving that goal. Now COVID-19 is making that strategy even more attractive to savvy homeowners.

“We hear it from professionals and consumers alike: Today, families want an especially cocooning home environment,” says Linda Jovanovich, of the American Hardwood Information Center. “Wood is an inherently warm and characterful material that engenders feelings of reliability and familiarity in us. But along with that tried-and-true aspect, hardwood also offers a wide range of different looks and design possibilities, so there’s always an element of uniqueness and personalization whenever it’s used.”

The kitchen is often called “the heart of the home” — a gathering place that provides sustenance through food and the companionship of friends and family — making it an ideal space in which to put wood’s authentic natural powers to work. Replacing tired old cabinets with stylish hardwood ones is a good starting point, as shown in the makeover of a 1920s Bungalow house kitchen where a classic American hardwood — quarter-sawn white oak — is used for all the new millwork and flooring. The floorboards are lightly white-washed to create the look of bare wood; the base cabinets, supplied by Plain & Fancy Custom Cabinetry, get a slightly darker cerused finish to distinguish them from the rest of the woodwork. The wall cabinets are painted white to match the kitchen’s shiplap ceiling. “It’s peaceful rather than exciting,” notes the homeowner. “And that’s exactly what we wanted.”

Without doubt, a good part of wood’s appeal is due to the fact that, like us, each piece of timber is unique — its color, texture and grain are as individual as a human personality, so we keep discovering new aspects of its beauty and versatility to delight in. “But there are other good reasons why being surrounded with hardwood makes us feel good,” Jovanovich points out. “It is exactly the kind of material that today’s environmentally conscious consumer demands: One that’s renewable, sustainable, plentiful, durable and easy to work with — all of which makes it an excellent return on investment, too.” And that feeling of well-being is not just in our minds or pocketbooks: Wood is healthy, it doesn’t harbor dust and other allergens, and it gives off almost no VOCs in its natural state. And what could be more reassuring than that?

What if one blood test could detect more than 50 types of cancers?

2021-02-09T17:40:44

(BPT) – Everyone has been touched by cancer in some way, whether it’s a friend or family member facing a diagnosis, or their own worry about susceptibility to the disease. This year alone, roughly 1.8 million people will be diagnosed with cancer in the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute. Nearly 1,700 lives are lost to cancer every day.

Despite numerous advances in oncology — the field of medicine that treats cancer — cancer is the second-leading cause of death in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and is projected to become the first. That’s in large part because most cancers go undetected until it is too late because there is no early screening available today for the majority of deadly cancers. The current guideline-recommended screenings in the U.S., while critical, test for five cancers and screen for one cancer at a time. Cancers without available screening tests account for 71% of all cancer deaths in the U.S.

The importance of early detection

Medical experts agree that early detection of cancer saves lives and correlates with the ability to treat the disease successfully. Because screenings exist for five types of cancer when there are more than 100 types in total, the most pressing unmet need in cancer early detection is to identify cancers for which there are no existing recommended screening tests.

“Late-stage cancer detection is deadly,” says Dr. Joshua Ofman, chief medical officer and external affairs at GRAIL, a company whose mission is to detect cancer early, when it can be cured. “The five-year survival rate of a person diagnosed with cancer once it has already spread is just 21%, compared to an 89% survival rate of someone whose cancer is found in early stages. There is a significant opportunity to reduce cancer deaths through early detection.”

Potentially game-changing technology

Medical advances are poised to change how cancer can be detected. Researchers have been working hard on a single blood test capable of finding many cancers.

The novel multi-cancer early detection blood test, called Galleri, is developed by GRAIL and expected to be commercially available for the first time in 2021. In a clinical validation study, an earlier version of the test demonstrated the ability to detect more than 50 types of cancers — over 45 of which have no recommended screening today — including at early stages, with a very low false positive rate of less than 1%. When a cancer signal is detected, the test can determine where in the body the cancer signal is located with high accuracy.

“A simple blood test capable of detecting more than 50 types of cancer is a ground-breaking and potentially life-saving advancement that could have a tremendous human and economic benefit,” explains Dr. Minetta Liu, research chair and professor, Department of Oncology, Mayo Clinic. “Recent modeling data suggests if all cancers currently diagnosed at stage IV could be detected earlier, evenly distributed across stages I-III, cancer deaths could fall by 24%.”

A new era in early cancer detection

“With the introduction of Galleri, we are approaching a long-awaited and pivotal moment in cancer care, and we are dedicated to bringing this potentially life-saving technology into the hands of patients, providers, and communities,” Ofman says. “We are thrilled to be making a blood test that can detect multiple deadly cancers early a reality.”

Biomedical innovation is evolving, and this new blood test has the potential to save many lives through early detection. To learn more about this technology, visit grail.com/galleri.

Bring a little luxury to your life by bringing wine country to you

2021-02-09T16:42:56

(BPT) – While you’re staying at home and doing your best to be safe during a pandemic, there’s one thing you shouldn’t have to compromise on — high-quality wine. And if you’re a seasoned wine drinker, you know that Napa Valley is the place to be.

“Napa Valley’s reputation is globally recognized, but its output is remarkably small,” says Elizabeth Vianna, winemaker at Chimney Rock Winery. “We produce only 4% of California’s total wine production, but that 4% represents the very best California has to offer.”

So, if you can’t have a travel adventure this year, Napa Valley can come to you. Here’s how to bring a little luxury to your life and experience wine country without ever leaving your home.

1. Set the mood with music

Turn up the music and get ready to relax. Choose your go-to wine tasting playlist or search for one that’s already been created wherever you listen to music. It’s all about what gets you in the wine-tasting mood.

2. Try a virtual tasting

Escape to wine country with a virtual visit to Napa Valley wineries. For example, Wine.com is hosting “A Toast to Napa Valley” — a free virtual wine tasting event featuring some of Napa’s most acclaimed wine producers. You can even purchase wine to taste during the session that will be shipped directly to your home or can be sent to a loved one as a holiday gift. To sign up and get your wine for the tasting, go to wine.com. The session will be on the Wine.com website for several months. This is a way to share a common experience with friends and family tuning in at the same time, all from the safety of your own home.

3. Treat yourself to a cinematic getaway

Wine and film share a profound link: the ability of a single sip or scene to whisk your senses away to a wholly different time and place. After all: Wine, popcorn and a good movie makes for a great time, any night of the week. For inspiration, check out Wine Enthusiast Magazine’s Top 10 Greatest Wine Movies of All Time by visiting www.winemag.com.

4. Treat yourself to a spa night

Rest and recover with a little spa time. Light a candle, put on a different kind of face mask, pour yourself a glass of cabernet and hop into a steaming tub of bubbly water to soothe sore muscles and promote a restful night of sleep — and dream of a day where you can enjoy wine country in person. It’s the perfect cap to your Napa-themed day.

5. Get cooking

If you were really exploring Napa Valley, you’d be feasting on fresh, local fare for every meal. For your Napa day at home, consider this sublime recipe for grilled New York Steak with Porcini Mushroom Butter from wine country chef Colin Crowley. Whatever you choose to cook or order in from your favorite restaurant, don’t forget to select wines that pair well with your food choices.

Grilled New York Steak with Porcini Butter (Serves 6)

1 cup Cabernet Sauvignon

2 sprigs fresh thyme

1 shallot, minced

1/2 cup dried porcini mushrooms

3/4 cup warm water

3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

1/2 small onion, finely minced

1 tablespoon fresh thyme, minced

Salt and freshly ground pepper

6 NY Strip steaks, 7 ounces each

Put the wine, thyme sprigs and shallots in a small saucepan and reduce until approximately 1 tablespoon of wine is left. Strain and let cool. Rinse and soak the mushrooms 1 hour in the warm water. Drain the mushrooms; strain the liquid through a fine strainer or cheesecloth, reserving 1/4 cup. Heat 2 tablespoons butter in a small sauté pan or skillet over low heat. Add the onion and cook until tender and translucent, about 10 minutes. Pulse the mushrooms in a food processor until chopped. Add the onion, reserved mushroom soaking liquid, wine reduction, minced thyme and remaining 3/4 cup butter; process until blended. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Heat the grill or broiler. Lightly sprinkle the steaks with salt and pepper and grill or broil 3 minutes each side for medium-rare. Place a dollop of butter on each steak and serve.

Immunity Garden

Health is top of mind for people across the country. An abundant garden full of vibrant vegetables like winter squash, radishes and tomatoes can help you commit to a nutrient-rich diet that strengthens your immune system.

A vegetable’s color reflects the different phytonutrients and antioxidants inside, according to the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism. Growing a rainbow of vegetables allows you to create multi-hued meals with health and disease-fighting benefits.

“Planting an Immunity Garden right in your own backyard will do a world of good,” says Moore. “It offers unlimited access to nutrient-dense vegetables that help support your overall health and well-being. Tomatoes are a great example: they are rich in vitamin C, which plays a vital role in a healthy immune system.”

Garden of Joy

Gardening helps you reduce stress, move your body and enjoy the outdoors. The psychological benefits of caring for plants can support the mental health of people at any age. That’s why individuals as well as families are planting gardens of joy, with blooms that are as pleasant as the process of gardening itself.

The garden of joy is a flower bed full of bright “faces”, including pansies and violas, that are sure to inspire many smiles of pure happiness. Every time you tend to these happy blooms you will feel a little lift in your day, plus it brightens your outdoor landscape in a cheerful way.

World Herb Garden

Experiencing international flavors in food is an important part of traveling and with so many people pausing vacation plans, the associated explorational eating has paused as well. Your palate is ready for something new and you can experience a world of flavors from your own backyard when you grow a world herb garden — no passport needed.

Herbs like lemongrass, dill and cilantro are easy to grow and offer bright flavors to enhance your favorite recipes, no matter the cuisine. Whether you use them fresh, dry or in custom blends, you’ll have a bounty of flavor at your fingertips to complement meats, vegetables, pasta and more.

5 tips for financial and retirement planning in 2021

2021-02-09T06:01:00

(BPT) – The past year has presented countless challenges, and for many, a reassessment of goals — especially when it comes to finances. A new survey shows attitude shifts including a renewed effort to gain control of finances, especially through increased saving and getting professional advice.

Even Americans who did not lose work lost a sense of confidence in the economy. The survey by Harris Poll for Empower Retirement and Personal Capital reveals a change in attitudes about finances from April — as the pandemic’s effects were beginning — to December of 2020. Despite the stock market rallying after the initial lockdowns, only 22% of survey respondents from December said they felt optimistic about their finances, as compared with 29% from the April survey.

With the turmoil of the last year, 2/3 of respondents said they were bracing for financial pain in the event of future lockdowns, with 44% concerned about losing money on investments. Reacting to uncontrollable world events, one theme emerged: People want to feel more in control of their own finances, whatever comes next.

These tips can help you feel more confident financially, no matter your circumstances.

1. Save what you can

There’s no better buffer against unexpected emergencies — anything from car breakdowns to job loss — than an emergency fund. Financial professionals recommend saving at least three to six months of expenses to be prepared for emergencies.

Sound daunting? Start small, and consider setting up automatic deposits into a savings account with each paycheck, to save without thinking about it. Even a few dollars per pay period can add up over time.

2. Invest in your family’s future

According to the survey, parents are concerned about the pandemic’s impact on their children’s education, but many believe the crisis will lead to a fundamental shift in higher education. Nearly 6 out of 10 (59%) expect student loan debt forgiveness to become more common, and half believe the pandemic will make higher education more accessible in the long term.

If your children are college bound, have a conversation with a financial professional or your child’s high school guidance counselor about how financial aid works and what strategies may benefit your family. If you have young children, look into a 529 college savings plan in your state, which can provide both tax and financial benefits.

3. Don’t forget retirement

Whether you’re approaching retirement age soon or it’s years away, consider taking full advantage of your employer’s matching funds for your 401(k) contributions. Ask your HR department about how to fully utilize all your available employer retirement benefits, and increase your retirement savings percentage now if you can. Your future self will thank you.

4. Consider your HSA account as part of your retirement strategy

If your company offers a health savings account (HSA), remember that any unused funds can be saved up to be used during your retirement — adding to your future financial stability. When you do need your HSA for medical expenses, check with your employer to see how it can best be used. An HSA can help pay for qualified medical expenses including prescriptions, medical tests and treatments, including many vision and dental expenses.

5. Consult a professional

Given the turmoil of 2020, Americans are focusing on fundamentals: cutting spending, increasing savings and safeguarding investments. Over half the survey respondents sought financial guidance related to the election. As uncertainly continues, an increasing number are seeking professional help to make financial decisions and plans.

“A good financial professional can provide not just advice on saving and investing, but financial wellness recommendations on everything from building a budget and starting an emergency fund to managing debt,” said Edmund Murphy, president and CEO of Empower Retirement.

A financial professional can help you set priorities and find the best vehicles for protecting and growing your money. Ask your employer if your retirement plan provider offers financial advice through virtual sessions or phone calls with a professional. You may also be able to access digital tools that help you calculate how close you are to your retirement goals, along with ways to monitor your investments.

Nutrition key to dog’s success breaking competitive world records

2021-02-09T00:01:00

(BPT) – In 2017, a two-year old whippet named Sounders was introduced to the world of competitive canine diving. Just two years later, he was breaking world records and even captured the Guinness World Record for farthest jump by a dog (dock jumping).

In 2019, Sounders broke two records in Diving Dog and Fetch It! at the Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge (IDC), a canine competition where some of the top dogs from across the country compete in a variety of speed and distance events. Similar to long jump in track-and-field competitions, Diving Dog involves a dog running down a 40-foot runway, chasing a bumper toy that is thrown over a pool to see how far they can jump before touching the water.

Sounders broke the standing record in Diving Dog by jumping 35 feet, 9 inches. That same day, Sounders competed in Fetch It!, a competition where dogs run and jump to try to catch or knock down a bumper which hangs 4 feet above the water, the distance increasing with each jump. Sounders jumped 27 feet, 6 inches in Fetch It!, surpassing the standing record and earning his second IDC record in one day.

Nutrition and training make a champion

How did Sounders become a world record holder in just two short years? His owner, Laurel Behnke of Rochester, Washington, attributes his success to natural talent and temperament, consistent exercise and the advanced nutrition of Purina Pro Plan. In fact, she says proper nutrition has helped support Sounders’ endurance, body condition and performance, leading to the ultimate success in his competitions.

“I’ve been feeding Purina Pro Plan Sport for as long as I can remember,” says Behnke. “I trust the years of research that back it up, and I love how it helps Sounders perform — almost as much as he loves eating it.” Sounders isn’t the only dog who chooses the advanced nutrition of Pro Plan — many of the dogs who compete at IDC are fueled by Purina Pro Plan, as are 13 of the last 14 Westminster Best in Show winners, and 90 of the top 100 sporting dogs. (Based on 2019 National, World & Invitational Champions and Purina Award Winners. The handler or owner of these champions may have received Pro Plan dog food as ambassadors.)

Competing in 2020

While Sounders makes his jumps look easy, the competition is often anything but. Sounders faces tough opponents at the Incredible Dog Challenge, with one of his top competitors — also a whippet, named Slingshot, owned by Rachael Brinkman of Fenton, Michigan — challenging him to do his best. The rivalry is always close for these two dogs; Sounders took the top spot for Diving Dog again in 2020, but Slingshot nabbed the win in Fetch It!. Although Sounders’ 2019 scores still lead the pack, the recent loss has provided further incentive for Behnke, training hard with Sounders and continuing to fuel his body with the proper nutrition to try to win back the top spot in 2021.

Every dog can benefit from proper nutrition

Your dog doesn’t have to be an athlete to benefit from advanced nutrition. Good canine health is part exercise, part diet. Make a goal to exercise your dog daily, whether it’s playing in the yard, taking a walk or going for a jog. Then help them look and feel their best while fueling their bodies with the right food for their breed size, life stage and needs. Not sure which food is the right food? Consult your veterinarian or visit myPlan to figure out which formula is best for your dog. Pro Plan offers a full spectrum of performance and specialized nutrition formulas, including options that support active dogs, healthy aging, cognitive health and more. Every ingredient is carefully chosen for a specific purpose, and the nutrition is backed by over 500 scientists including nutritionists, behaviorists and veterinarians.

Check your local tv listings or visit proplan.com/incredible to find out where to see Sounders, Slingshot and other top canines from around the country in action in the 23rd Annual Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge National Finals, which will air in syndication until March 28, 2021.

In the grip of a toothache? Seek out this pro to save your smile

2021-02-08T06:01:02

(BPT) – A stabbing toothache is a special kind of pain. It keeps you awake, inspires dread for your next meal and makes it darn near impossible to think about anything else. The mouth is a sensitive area, and those pain receptors are on high alert when it comes to infection and other maladies.

If you’re thinking you’d prefer to seek a root canal over a tooth extraction, you’re in good company. Four out of five Americans feel it’s better to go the root canal route than to get a tooth pulled.

It’s important to understand that it is far better to save your natural tooth whenever possible. Making an appointment with an endodontist, a highly skilled dental specialist, can be your best solution.

“If you’re suffering with a toothache that wakes you up out of a sound sleep at night, or because you’re eating hot or cold food, you need an endodontist,” says Dr. Alan H. Gluskin, president of American Association of Endodontists. “You should not delay treatment.”

Over eight in 10 adults in the U.S. (83%) say they have undergone some type of dental procedure (e.g. cavity filling, wisdom teeth removal, root canal, etc.).

Knowledge is Power

According to the AAE, no one is better at saving your natural teeth than an endodontist. Endodontists can diagnose and treat tooth pain, and perform a root canal treatment, if needed. These root canal specialists receive two to three years of training beyond dental school, and they have a high level of precision and hand-eye coordination to complete these complex treatments. They also use specialized technology to treat tooth pain and perform root canal treatments.

Finally, endodontists are taking precautions to keep patients safe during COVID-19. Don’t let the pandemic delay the treatment you need.

When intense tooth pain rears up, do what you can to preserve your natural tooth by following these tips.

Act quickly: In the face of excruciating tooth pain, don’t put off making an appointment with a dentist or an endodontist. As Gluskin said, if it’s waking you up at night, or it’s triggered by mealtimes or by the heat or cold, it’s time to get help. An untreated infection can lead to more pain and in the worst-case scenario, it can lead to sepsis.

Choose the root canal: When your dentist offers the choice between tooth extraction and a root canal, always choose the root canal. As painful as that tooth feels in the moment, getting treatment will be well worth it in the long run. A bridge, a set of dentures, an implant will never look and feel like a natural tooth.

Explore your options: So your dentist recommends tooth extraction. Now what? Be sure and ask about root canal treatment. If your dentist says that’s not an option, ask why. From there, you can ask your dentist to refer you to an endodontist. Most endodontists will see patients on an emergency basis — weekends included.

When tooth pain flares up, get treatment and relief quickly. Find an endodontist working in your area by visiting FindMyEndodontist.com, and learn more about the benefits of root canal treatment at aae.org/patients.

Your COVID-19 Vaccination Questions, Answered

2021-02-05T12:01:00

(BPT) – With COVID-19 vaccination underway in the United States, many Americans are preparing to get the vaccine to protect themselves and help slow the spread of COVID-19. If you’re able to get the vaccine, you probably have a lot of questions. Knowing what to expect and how to properly prepare for your appointment can help put your mind at ease.

COVID-19 vaccine basics

COVID-19 vaccines are now available in the U.S., and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the vaccines approved in the U.S. do not contain the live virus that causes COVID-19 and therefore you cannot contract COVID-19 from them. The CDC states these vaccines have been carefully evaluated in clinical trials and are deemed safe and effective by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) with a full advisory committee meeting review for all vaccines.

Preparing for the COVID-19 vaccine

Getting a vaccine not only protects you, but also the people around you, especially those who are unable to get vaccinated. The CDC offers guidance summarized below to help you prepare for your vaccination, whether it’s your first or second dose:

1) If you’re approved to get a vaccine, talk to your healthcare provider ahead of time. You may be going to a vaccination clinic where your healthcare provider is not directly administering the injection, so if you have questions, speak with them before your appointment.

2) Do not schedule any other vaccinations within two weeks before your COVID-19 vaccination. If you feel ill before your appointment, call the vaccination clinic and ask if you should still come in or reschedule.

3) Get good rest the days prior to the appointment, especially the night before. Eat a light meal or snack before your appointment and stay hydrated. Rest and good nutrition help prepare your immune system for the vaccination.

4) Ask about side effects. While some people have no symptoms, others may experience headache, muscle/joint pain, chills, fever and fatigue that generally subside after 48 hours. Plan for several low-key days following your vaccination.

5) Plan ahead for post-vaccination care by having the essentials on hand in your medicine cabinet. According to the CDC, over-the-counter medications (like Advil) can reduce pain, fever or discomfort associated with post-COVID-19 vaccine, including mild aches or arm soreness. According to Dr. Jeffrey Fudin, B.S., Pharm.D., FCCP, FASHP, FFSMB, “Aches and fever are common side effects of coronavirus vaccination, and can easily be treated with a pain reliever like Advil.”

6) If your vaccine requires two doses, consult with your vaccination clinic or pharmacy to schedule your second dose.

While millions in the U.S. have received the COVID-19 vaccine, availability is currently limited and you may not be able to get it right away. Continue to take smart safety measures such as washing your hands frequently with soap and water, wearing a mask when out in public, avoiding large crowds, and appropriate social distancing. When it is time to get your COVID-19 vaccination, these preparatory steps will help you feel empowered as you take an important step to end the pandemic. For more information about how to prepare for the COVID-19 vaccine visit www.cdc.gov, and visit www.Advil.com for more information on Advil.
