Young designers discuss up-and-coming design inspirations

2021-03-09T06:01:00

(BPT) – Americans spent more time at home in 2020 than any other year, inspiring people to take on new interests like baking, crafting or interior design. While some things went oh so right, like a gorgeous new kitchen, some may have fallen a little flat — literally when your sourdough starter never “started.”

Maris Park and Malyka Abramson, industrial designers from Delta Faucet Company, were both recently recognized in the National Kitchen + Bath Association’s Thirty Under 30 Program, which celebrates emerging talent in the kitchen and bath industry. Here are Park and Abramson’s tips of what to explore, what to avoid and where to find your own inspiration:

Trending in 2021 and beyond

While the world works to put COVID-19 in the rearview mirror, its effects on design are here to stay. Americans are using their homes in a completely new way, and their expectations of the home are shifting to meet those new realities.

“We expect more of our homes than ever before,” said Park. “People are transforming their homes for their specific needs.”

Expect more multi-use spaces to use for cooking, virtual learning, home workouts and more. Indulgent spaces invite a retreat and recharge from an always-on lifestyle. Easy-to-clean products that promote health and wellness are surging in demand. Americans are investing in technology to not only make their lives easier, but to give them greater control of their homes.

Seek out designs that enhance your experience with the product or space or simply make your day better. The integrated pull-down spray wand of the Kayra™ Pull-Down Bath Faucet keeps bathroom sinks beautiful and hardworking with a quick rinse.

Americans are seeking to escape the pandemic in their homes, finding inspiration in either the past or the future. Many are going all-in on vintage looks, such as gold or porcelain fixtures, while others are pushed to the other end of the spectrum, looking to futuristic shapes and finishes. Delta Faucet’s Champagne Bronze™ finish harkens a vintage feel. On the other hand, the moody hues of a Matte Black finish give a contemporary look.

While there are plenty of trends to explore, there really are no rules to design this year. The rise of social media and free design tools have given you permission to mix trends, styles and decades into a space that is uniquely you and works for the way you use your home.

“To define your style in one trend is impossible right now,” said Park. “Instead, feel empowered to be daring with color, material and styling. Revolving this changing personality around a grounded piece, like a classic faucet silhouette, will allow for versatility for years to come.”

The lasting power of trends

Park and Abramson caution there’s a difference between trends and fads. “Consumers want to be current without chasing fleeting fads,” said Abramson. “They can protect themselves from fads by going after large-scale trends. It’s a fine line.”

How can you spot the difference? Trends can go on for years or even decades, and go down as classics. While they might not be in vogue forever, they’re never out of place.

But fads aren’t totally banned. Park suggests experimenting with fads in your styling that can be switched out and fine-tuned over the years. “Styling is everything right now, it’s how you add a personal touch and make meaningful connections,” she said. “It’s also how you get re-inspired and continue to fall in love with a space.”

When you find designs that resonate with you and better your home, you make emotional connections with a piece. You build memories with it. Maybe it’s giving your baby their first bath. Or it’s choosing a finish that reminds you of your grandparents’ home. It’s the memories your children grow up with. It’s this emotion that gives a piece its staying power.

That’s the lasting power of change.

Don’t put off dental care!

2021-03-08T11:21:00

(BPT) – Many Americans may be risking their health by neglecting regular health appointments, including dental care. In a normal year, an estimated 100 million Americans fail to see a dental professional, according to the American Dental Association.1 Unfortunately, COVID-19 intensified this, as more than half of adults say they or another family member in their household skipped or postponed some type of medical care because of the coronavirus — with dental care at the top of the list.2

Preventative oral care not only assists in reducing the risk of more costly dental procedures, but research shows it can also help prevent the discovery of potential health issues like heart disease. In fact, the Mayo Clinic says unhealthy teeth and gums could lead to germs entering the bloodstream and traveling to the heart, leading to the ailment endocarditis.3

Yet, pandemic conditions may not be the only factor for those putting off needed dental care. Another concern lies with high medical costs, especially when more than a routine checkup is required. According to Aflac’s annual WorkForces Report, 48% of U.S. employees said they couldn’t pay $1,000 or more for out-of-pocket expenses without relying on debt or credit if an unexpected serious illness or accident occurred today.4

“Preventative dental care is important in maintaining your overall health and shouldn’t be avoided,” said Bob Ruff, a senior vice president with Aflac. “That’s why having and using dental insurance is important so people won’t feel as if they have to choose between their wallets and their wellness.”

Dental coverage, which Ruff says Aflac began selling nationally in January, is the second-most important benefit in workers’ insurance packages right after major medical health insurance.4

Ruff recommends looking for a dental plan that helps cover costs of dental care. In addition, he advises checking to see if you have supplemental insurance with a wellness or health screening benefit, which pays cash for going to a medical professional or receiving preventative care.

Taking care of your mouth isn’t only good for detection of more serious illnesses. It’s also been connected to an enhanced self-esteem, especially with adolescents.5 And after the events of the last year, people deserve to enjoy good health and a bright smile.

5 simple habits to support your well-being this year

2021-03-08T11:31:00

(BPT) – SPONSORED ADVERTISING CONTENT

While everyone wants to improve their daily habits, starting new routines can be challenging. Often when you consider revamping your lifestyle, you come up with ambitious goals that are hard to keep up over time. Instead, why not make smaller lifestyle changes, smaller steps that you know you can stick to?

Rather than overhauling your entire routine, first identify one or two simple changes you can do. Then, who knows? You may just pick up one or two more. Remember: Even small changes can make a difference to your overall well-being.

Here are some simple steps to choose from.

1. Pick up the pace

Boost your health by moving your feet. If you don’t normally exercise, start with a simple walk around the block at the same time every day. Weather not cooperating? March in place to music for a few minutes at a time, a few times a day. If you already exercise regularly, see if you can step it up. Add another block to your walk, pick up your pace, or add hand weights two or three times a week.

The CDC recommends walking as an easy and effective way to exercise, and their guidelines advise working up to at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week.

Check with your doctor before beginning any exercise program, especially if you have been inactive.

2. Catch up on your check-ups

If it’s been awhile since your last wellness exam, now’s a good time to make that appointment. Be proactive — even if you feel fine right now, your health care provider can offer advice and recommendations on nutrition and exercise. They can also let you know if you are caught up on health screenings and immunizations you may need to maintain your health.

3. Make simple swaps in the kitchen

Boosting the nutritional content of your food doesn’t require a complete diet overhaul. Add one or two vegetables, fruits or whole grains every day to boost your intake of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Explore new foods to find options offering health benefits that also taste great — so you’re more likely to keep eating them.

For example, Kellogg’s Raisin Bran Toasted Oats and Honey is not only a delicious way to start the morning, but it also helps you get your fiber fix. Fiber is crucial to support digestive health, which is an important part of overall wellness. National consumption surveys indicate that only about 5% of the U.S. population meets fiber consumption recommendations, according to the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine’s 2016 Closing America’s Fiber Intake Gap.

Kellogg’s Raisin Bran Toasted Oats and Honey features the Kellogg’s Raisin Bran ingredients you already know and love — hearty bran flakes and juicy raisins — now paired with crisp, whole-grain toasted oats and a touch of real honey. With whole-grain oats in each spoonful, every serving is a good source of fiber, without sacrificing taste.

4. Learn how much water your body needs

According to WebMD, the commonly touted 8 glasses of water everyone should drink should be taken as just a minimal guideline. Many people actually need more, especially for those who are exercising, in hot weather or who are pregnant or breastfeeding. It’s best to talk to your healthcare provider about your particular needs, as people with some health conditions may need to limit their water intake.

5. Get your zz’s

Chronic sleep deprivation can increase your risk of high blood pressure and heart disease, among other health concerns, according to The Mayo Clinic. As a part of your healthier lifestyle program, take a look at your sleep habits and see if you’re getting enough shuteye.

If you’re not getting 7-8 hours of sleep a night, try turning off the gadgets earlier each night to get to bed earlier, or streamline your routine to allow a few more minutes of rest each morning.

Set yourself up for success by starting small first. Even tackling just a couple of these habits can improve how you feel each day. And once they’ve become habit, see if you can add even more!

3 issues many working women face today

2021-03-08T08:01:00

(BPT) – Even though women make up nearly 51% of the world’s population, there is still a way to go when it comes to full, fair and equitable treatment.

As part of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, Mars, Incorporated, a global, privately held and family-owned company with a diverse and expanding portfolio of confectionery, food, and pet care products and services, is looking for ways to create more equitable communities in and out of the workplace by asking what is needed to help more women reach their full potential.

“Increasingly business is being called upon to make a lasting, positive impact on society. In that spirit, Mars wants to hear from diverse voices — women around the world and men who champion progress — on what needs to change in order for women to reach their full potential,” said Jessica Adelman, vice president corporate affairs, Mars North America.

Here are a few of the outside factors that serve as barriers to women and how companies everywhere can help solve the issue, because we all have a role in creating a better world tomorrow.

For mothers, childcare is expensive

According to a recent report, it costs on average $16,000 annually to raise a child in the United States. Some states are more expensive than others. But in many cases, that amount is more than annual tuitions at flagship universities. And for women who decide to leave the workforce to care for their children, those annual costs can create extra burdens long-term.

How can employers help? Employers who can afford to should consider childcare subsidies for working parents, or provide back-up care resources. These options can allow women to stay in the workforce and provide for their children, or elderly relatives, without unnecessary sacrifice.

When it comes to parental leave, Denmark is known for having some of the best child care policies in the world. In Denmark, women can get a total of 18 weeks paid maternity leave. Four weeks before the baby is born and 14 weeks after. Parents split 32 additional weeks of leave after that.

Work schedules can be restrictive

With countless professionals working from home, many have realized the traditional 9-5 isn’t feasible while balancing other responsibilities. That’s especially true for women, who take on the lion’s share of caregiving work inside the home. Not only are they trying to keep up with work-related duties, but they’re also more likely to take responsibility in caring for children or supporting aging parents. The burden is even more significant for single working mothers.

To combat this, employers can offer flexible work schedules. A flexible schedule can allow women to tend to the needs of themselves and their family while allowing them to do their jobs to the best of their ability.

Our collective mental health is taking a hit due to the pandemic

Lots has been written a year into a global pandemic about how women are reporting significantly higher levels of psychological distress due to the burdens and societal expectations placed on them, especially during times like these.

Employers need to understand the mental toll the pandemic is taking, not only on women, but on all of their employees, and find ways to help them cope. Whether that’s through free or discounted therapy sessions, yoga classes or family leave, there’s a lot they can do. In the U.S. Mars adapted its previously in-person employee well-being moments such as stretch breaks and fitness classes to a virtual format, offering a way for employees to connect with each other virtually, support their mind and body, and invite more employees than before to join in without the limit of a physical room.

Finding solutions requires working together

The pandemic has created fear and uncertainty for people around the world. However, it has also shed light on the daily struggles of women and given them a voice to fight for more fair and equitable treatment in the workplace and beyond.

Mars is one of the many companies joining in the fight for workplace and societal equality for all women. That’s why the company is using its voice to stand up not just for its employees, but for all women around the globe. However, this requires collective input. People need to share their stories and raise their voices if society is to create strong and thriving communities not just for women, but for everyone around the world.

11 easy ways to stay entertained without leaving your house

2021-03-08T10:57:00

(BPT) – Cold weather paired with stay-at-home orders means families across the country have been spending more time at home. This is a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time together and make memories in the process. No matter what your household size or the variety of ages that live in your home, there is plenty to do without leaving the house.

Try interactive games: When you’re not sure what to play, ask Alexa. The smart device is your gateway to countless great games like Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, Deal or No Deal, Escape the Room and classics like Pac-Man, The Floor is Lava, Clue, Twister, Simon Says and Mads Libs if you’re feeling nostalgic. Plan a family game night, stock up on favorite snacks and have some fun. It’s a challenge to try something new you’ve never played before and you might be surprised to see who wins!

Backwards day: Sometimes the opposite can be more fun, so plan a backwards day and do everything in reverse. Young children really enjoy doing activities like wearing sweatshirts backward or eating breakfast for dinner. You can even create a custom routine for backwards day with Alexa — the sillier the better when it comes to backwards day, so don’t worry if things get a little goofy.

Have a dance party: Play some tunes and show off your best moves with a family dance party for smiles all around. You can even have a multi-room dance party when you play music across multiple Alexa Devices. Simply use the app to create a Multi-Room Music group and ask to play your favorite music.

Music sharing: Want to share a song with your family and friends to let them know you’re thinking about them? Alexa can help with that! Sharing music with your loved ones is as easy as saying “Alexa, share this song with Claire.” The person you’ve sent the song to can listen on their Echo device and send back a reaction. What better way to discover new music.

Look at family photographs: Get a little sentimental by spending some time looking at images of your family over the years. While some of this can easily be accessed on your phone, don’t limit yourself. Dust off old photo albums and have fun trying to guess who is who and sharing memories with younger generations. If you have an Echo Show, you can say “Alexa, show my photos” to view your photos.

Try new recipes: Extra time at home means extra time for trying new foods and recipes. Whether it’s cookbooks in your home or asking Alexa to show you a new recipe on your Echo Show, have everyone pick out a few they want to try and then plan a day each week to cook them together. Another idea is to choose theme weeks and cook to match your theme.

Stream video content: With Echo Show, you can plan a family movie night and stream your favorite movie or TV show from providers like Prime Video, Hulu, NBC and others. Amazon also recently introduced Netflix on Echo Show so you can browse the full Netflix catalog as well as pause, resume and stream movies or TV shows using just your voice. To get started, customers can say, “Alexa, open Netflix” and log into their account.

Cheer for favorite sports: Plan a game day and do favorite tailgate activities at home, including favorite food, that lucky outfit and fun decor. Remember, follow your team on the Alexa app and simply say “Alexa, give me my sports update” for the latest scores, upcoming games and more. You can also watch NBA video highlights from your favorite team on your Echo Show device.

Find your next great read: From making dinner to making time for yourself, Alexa can help you find your next read when you’re looking to unwind. Simply ask, “Alexa, what should I read next?” and get suggestions for your next read based on personalized, top-selling or trending books from over 20 million Audible, Kindle or print titles.

Catch up on your favorite podcasts: Looking for a new podcast to listen to or want to catch up on your favorites? Alexa has you covered! Just ask Alexa to play the podcast of your choice or if you need inspiration on what podcast to listen to just say “Alexa, recommend a podcast” and sit back and relax.

New study fuels hyperlocal efforts supporting black women-owned businesses

2021-03-08T06:01:00

(BPT) – Minority-owned businesses are the cornerstone of their communities, and over one-third of Black-owned businesses in the U.S. are headed by women — the highest share of any ethnic group. Yet according to Visa’s new Black Women-Owned Business Report 2021, nearly three quarters (71%) of Black women-owned businesses estimate they can’t survive another year under current pandemic conditions.

In the wake of the pandemic, small and medium-sized businesses nationwide have taken a major hit, with minority businesses suffering the most devastating blows. While more than half (54%) of businesses surveyed for Visa’s new report stated their business was positively impacted following the Black Lives Matter movement in Summer 2020, more than three quarters (78%) of businesses who saw benefits have said those increases have ceased.

The successes of Black-owned business are hard fought, as the Federal Reserve reports Black-owned businesses are less likely to be approved for bank loans, with an approval rate of only 46.5% (compared to 75.3% for white-owned businesses). Visa’s study supports this data, finding nearly one third (31%) of Black women-owned businesses stated raising capital and funding to stay afloat was one of their biggest challenges since the pandemic hit the U.S.

While women-owned businesses have been historically underfunded, new resources and support are emerging, including a newly formed Visa program focused on supporting Black women-owned businesses at a hyperlocal level. Addressing the needs of local entrepreneurs in cities with the highest concentration of Black-owned businesses in the U.S. and building on support provided to women-owned small businesses through “She’s Next, Empowered by Visa” — the company brings resources and expertise to provide entrepreneurs with tailored solutions in the following cities: Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami and Washington, D.C. In addition, Visa has announced it will:

  • Commit $1,000,000 and extend its grant and mentorship program to the six U.S. cities. Call for applications have opened and can be found at: https://ifundwomen.com/visa.
  • Host its first She’s Next virtual conference of the year, “She’s Next 2021” on March 25, in partnership with The Female Quotient, to celebrate the Black community and women entrepreneurs. Interested small business owners can register at https://thefemalequotient.equalitylounge.com/shesnext2021empoweredbyvisa.
  • Launch spotlight marketing campaigns to encourage consumers to shop at Black women-owned small businesses.
  • Partner with Black Girl Ventures to work with local organizations that can more easily reach small businesses and help with point-of-sale and other technology upgrades.

“Black Girl Ventures is proud to partner with Visa on not only financially assisting these entrepreneurs, but also on providing a megaphone to each community’s most pressing needs,” said Shelly Bell, founder, Black Girl Ventures. “While the Black Lives Matter movement elevated consumer support of these businesses, the movement must continue to lift up these neighborhoods financially and spiritually.”

New survey: Americans cut prescription costs by ordering from Canada

2021-03-07T05:01:00

(BPT) – Prescription drug prices are skyrocketing. For anyone who needs regular prescriptions to manage serious chronic health conditions, the soaring cost of their medications creates a real burden. Studies show that one in four adults skip medications primarily due to cost, which leads to bigger problems both for their health outcomes and for increasing medical costs as they suffer complications due to missed medications. But a new survey shows that a growing number of Americans are finding a workable solution: importing prescription medications from Canada.

In the survey, conducted by the Campaign for Personal Prescription Importation (CPPI), over 93% of the respondents cited the high cost of prescription drugs in the U.S. as the primary reason they ordered prescriptions from licensed online Canadian pharmacies.

How much are they saving?

According to the survey, Americans ordering their prescription drugs from certified online Canadian pharmacies are saving an average of $228 per month — or $2,736 per year. Here’s the breakdown of savings per month:

  • Over 57% saved $100 or more
  • 15% saved over $200
  • 19% saved over $300

For that last group, the average monthly savings was $755 each month, up from $648 in 2019.

Recent price comparisons show that online Canadian pharmacies consistently offer Americans savings of 50-90% on brand-name prescription medications compared to leading U.S. pharmacies as well as GoodRx and Amazon Pharmacy.

The real impact

The effect of these savings is not just about the cost. Craig Barnes of Oregon has been ordering prescription drugs from Canada for about two years. “I have a heart condition that requires medication to regulate my heart rate,” said Barnes. The U.S. list price of 60 tabs (a 30-day supply) is approximately $500.00. On GoodRx, the price is a bit lower — about $460.00. Even with his insurance, his out-of-pocket monthly cost in the U.S. would be about $236.00. Buying from an online Canadian pharmacy, Barnes saves $2,328 a year, getting the medication he needs for only $42.00 per month.

“If I had to buy the medication in the U.S., I would have to stop treatment or split doses,” said Barnes. And for most people managing a health condition like Barnes, that can result in a much poorer health outcome, leading to complications that could even be life-threatening.

In the CPPI survey, 62% of the Americans who import their prescriptions said they were referred by a trusted medical professional, friend or family member, and 80% of the survey respondents knew how to identify “rogue” pharmacies and felt savvy about their ability to find a trustworthy online pharmacy. The upshot? A whopping 99% of those who currently import their prescriptions from Canada would recommend doing so to family and friends.

It’s definitely a continuing trend — last year saw an increase from 8.1% to 13.3% of Americans who reported ordering prescription drugs from online Canadian pharmacies for the first time. Eighty-seven percent said they had been ordering from online Canadian pharmacies for a year or longer. Until prescription medications become more affordable in the U.S., it’s a trend that is likely to continue to grow.

How to find a safe pharmacy online

The pandemic has underscored the importance of everyone having access to safe, reliable and affordable medications. For those with multiple underlying conditions, this is even more crucial now.

The Campaign for Personal Prescription Importation (CPPI) recommends searching for licensed Canadian pharmacies on certified websites. CPPI is a national nonprofit patient advocacy organization that fights for Americans’ access to safe, affordable prescription medications from Canada for personal use. On their website, PersonalImportation.org, you can find advice and tips, plus a link to the Canadian International Pharmacy Association (CIPA) website, CIPA.com, for a list of licensed pharmacies.

“All Americans deserve access to affordable prescription medications. The savings that American patients report finding from online Canadian pharmacies is significant and available to Americans right now,” says Jack Pfeiffer, executive director of the Campaign for Personal Prescription Importation. “There is even a bill in Congress, the Safe and Affordable Drugs from Canada Act, which could make these savings even easier for Americans to come by.”

U.K.’s pioneering medical technology is transforming U.S. healthcare

2021-03-05T15:45:00

(BPT) – From staying safe at home to staying alive at the hospital, throughout the pandemic, health technologies have come to the fore and shown their value for saving lives and improving care.

The U.K. runs a national value-based care system where innovations must rigorously demonstrate impact to patients and the health service. Tried and tested U.K. technologies are now found across the U.S. and globally, helping to better triage patients, dynamically monitor patients between home and hospital, gain insights from genomic data or electronic health records, and more. Here are 10 U.K. innovators equipping U.S. providers and patients with life-changing solutions.

Current Health

Few companies were better prepared for the pandemic than Current Health. Their remote healthcare platform allowed hospitals across the US and UK to manage patient care from home, preserve capacity and reduce the virus’ spread. Through vital sign monitoring and AI, it helps to predict early deterioration, allowing proactive intervention.

Clinithink

Patients tell their doctors stories and doctors write them down. Clinithink’s AI text processing capability reads physician notes and recognizes idioms, metaphors and all 72 different ways of saying ‘fractured neck of femur.’ New York’s Mount Sinai is using Clinithink to support its research into COVID-19.

Huma

Known as a “mini-hospital in your pocket,” Huma helps keep patients at home. They provide an ecosystem that connects the best data sets, clinicians, research and technology to monitor patients, advise on required care, and inform patients on whether they should visit a hospital or stay at home.

Isansys Lifecare

With the world’s most advanced patient monitoring platform, Isansys Lifecare and its Patient Status Engine (PSE) is replacing wired bedside monitors and providing near-ICU grade monitoring of patients when hospitals need it most. They are now working to support some of the U.K.’s and U.S.’s smallest citizens in pediatrics.

my mhealth

The my mhealth “always-on” service apps help healthcare professionals and patients manage long-term conditions, that include COPD, asthma, heart disease and diabetes, better. Recently they added a COVID-19 Virtual Ward to safely manage and monitor patients at home or in a care setting, reducing admissions and helping physical distancing.

Virti

Virti uses virtual reality to train frontline healthcare professionals working in California, Texas and the U.K. Named one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2020, Virti is one of several U.K. pioneers that took off stateside via the U.K. BioBridge, a business accelerator within the Texas Medical Center.

Visionable

Maker of the first video collaboration tool designed for healthcare teams, Visionable connects clinicians/patients in the hospital, home and in between. Their ‘digital stroke cart’ allows for immediate consultations with remote stroke specialists. And their world-class ‘5G Smart Ambulance’ offers specialized treatment for patients en route to the hospital.

Axial 3D

By 3D printing customized models of a patient, Axial 3D can dramatically shorten a surgeon’s theater time, reduce the cost of surgery and free up hospital capacity. In 2020 Axial 3D began printing models of COVID-19 patients’ lungs, allowing faster and more accurate planning and treatment.

Babylon

Through their AI-powered app, Babylon empowers people to take charge of their health, providing them with highly accessible primary care to help keep them out of the hospital where possible, and create better health. Through Babylon’s U.S. partnerships, millions of Americans now have access to these services.

Lantum

Lantum offers a total workforce solution for healthcare at locations like Cedars-Sinai in California, in Texas and the U.K. Lantum is able to drive higher staff retention and can manage flexible staff pools to maintain consistent care as health systems are pushed to capacity.

3 major benefits of the Extra Help program

2021-03-05T15:01:01

(BPT) – Maintaining your quality of life can become more challenging as you age. In addition to routine living expenses, your medical bills may begin to pile up, consuming more and more of your limited income.

This can be worrisome for Medicare beneficiaries, who remain the only insured population without a cap on out-of-pocket spending. Older adults are more likely to require medications for multiple conditions, which means multiple co-pays. And these extra bills can create a significant burden. The good news is that you may qualify for Medicare’s Extra Help program, which could help lower your medication costs by 85% or more.

What is the Extra Help program?

Run by the Social Security Administration, the Extra Help program — also known as the Low-Income Subsidy program — helps qualified Medicare beneficiaries afford the costs related to their prescription drugs, including premiums, deductibles and co-pays.

There is a full and a partial coverage version of the plan available, depending on your income level and assets, but both versions have huge potential for savings. For example, if a medication would normally cost $12,000 a year out of pocket, through the Extra Help partial program, your payment could be reduced to about $1,900. With full Extra Help, you would pay $0.

Most people who qualify for the full program are automatically enrolled, because they are already enrolled in Medicaid and Medicare, or another support program. But many people are eligible for the partial program and don’t realize it, missing out on big savings. An individual might be eligible for the program if they have an annual income under $20,000 and less than $15,000 in assets, but there are some exceptions, and the limits are higher for couples. Want to check your eligibility? Start with this free, interactive quiz.

How does this program cover the costs?

The Extra Help program can help save money, but there is a lot more to it than that. Here are a few other benefits it can provide:

It pays for Part-D premiums: Most Medicare recipients have to pay a monthly fee as part of their premium. These premiums can be expensive depending on the prescription. Fortunately, the Extra Help program pays a portion of this premium. However, how much the program pays for can vary, as different states have different amounts they’re willing to set aside.

It gives qualified patients a special enrollment period: Most Medicare recipients can only enroll in prescription drug coverage during open enrollment between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7. But with the Extra Help program, participants have a Special Open Enrollment period that runs through the first nine months of the year.

It eliminates late enrollment penalties: If you’ve enrolled late for Part-D Medicare benefits before, you’ve probably paid a penalty fee. The fee is 1% of the national base beneficiary premium, which was $32.74 in 2020. But for those who are part of the Extra Help program, these fees usually get eliminated.

There is a path to affordable treatment

With all the valuable benefits the Extra Help program can provide, qualifying requires getting your financial documents in order and filling out an application. This can seem overwhelming at first, but the PAN Foundation’s education hub can help. It includes videos that explain the process, an eligibility checker and an interactive check list to get you ready to apply. And if you get approved, the benefits can help you save a lot of money over the years.
