Feeding tips for your new puppy or kitten as they grow

2021-05-21T08:01:02

(BPT) – Congratulations on your new puppy or kitten! Like babies, kittens and puppies have special nutritional needs. To help establish the foundation for a future of good health, welcome your new pet with the right foods packed with proper nutrients, and feed them appropriately for their age and size to keep them growing happy and healthy.

Purina veterinarian Dr. Callie Harris, D.V.M., and senior feeding behavior expert at Purina Dr. Annie Valuska, Ph.D., offer tips for keeping your new puppy or kitten well-fed and healthy.

Feeding your new puppy

High-quality, complete and balanced puppy food is crucial for giving your pup the nutrition they need for a head start toward a lifetime of good health.

“Puppies need 25% more protein, 54% more fat and 140% more calcium than adult dogs,” said Harris. “That’s why feeding your puppy a food that is formulated especially for puppies is vital for their rapid growth and development.”

Puppy food contains vital nutrients including protein, omega fatty acids and calcium needed for a puppy’s development. And kibble size is important too; puppy food has a smaller kibble size designed for smaller mouths.

How long do you feed puppy food, and how much?

The amount of food your puppy needs depends on how much they’ll weigh when they mature. “A Labrador retriever weighs more at maturity than a Russell terrier, so the larger breed dog requires more food as a puppy,” explained Harris.

While most puppies need puppy food approximately 12 months, larger breeds need puppy food up to 24 months. Large breed dogs have bigger bones that take longer to mature, and they also have a higher risk of joint problems as adults. Feeding large breed-specific puppy food can help support their joint health and mobility into adulthood. Connecting with your puppy’s veterinarian will ensure you’re feeding your new pup appropriately for their breed.

Visit Purina.com/Puppy for a chart on how much to feed your puppy. Always review instructions on your puppy’s food bag and consult your veterinarian with questions about your puppy’s diet.

How should you feed your puppy?

“Choose a quiet place for your puppy’s food and water bowls,” said Valuska. “Feed them away from distractions and temptations like food prep areas.”

Give your puppy three equal-sized meals daily, based on their caloric requirement. Feed the same amounts of food at the same times each day to keep their digestive system regular — and make housetraining easier. Avoid overfeeding, which can lead to weight gain and other health problems. That includes treats, which should comprise no more than 10% of their daily caloric intake.

Feeding your new kitten

Did you know cats are generally considered kittens for the first 12 months of their life? It’s important that they be fed kitten food for that first full year to ensure a solid foundation of good health throughout their lives.

While a vast majority (91%) of kitten owners recently surveyed by Purina said they believed the food they feed their kitten will impact their health throughout their life, less than half ranked feeding kitten food for a full year as important, partly because only 20% realized cats are kittens for 12 whole months. To ensure that your kitten will be healthy now and throughout its adult life, it’s essential to continue feeding kitten food for that entire first year.

Kittens have specific nutritional needs best met by formulas designed just for kittens. Before bringing your new kitten home, have quality food ready that provides the nutrients they need, including calcium, protein and linoleic acid.

“Kittens begin eating solid food around 4-6 weeks as they’re weaning,” said Harris. “A great way to ensure young kittens get the nutrients necessary for their growth and development during this transition is to give them wet food.”

How should you feed your kitten?

Harris recommends feeding kittens a combination of wet and dry food. They will get plenty of moisture from the wet food to help support healthy hydration, plus potential dental benefits from crunchy kibble in dry food, helping reduce plaque and tartar buildup.

“Cats are creatures of habit,” said Valuska. “So feed your kitten at the same times and in the same quiet place every day.”

Always follow feeding instructions and measure the proper amount according to the cat food package. Whenever you transition from one food to another, such as from kitten to adult food, do this gradually over the course of 10-14 days by slowly increasing the amount of new food and decreasing the amount of old food to avoid digestive problems.

4 ways to make the most of college visits

2021-05-21T07:01:01

(BPT) – If you’re a high school junior or heading into your senior year, college is likely at the top of your mind — and probably your parents’ mind too. A campus visit, virtually or in-person, is a key way to narrow down your college choice. The same is true for students who are considering transferring to a new school to complete their degree.

“Choosing a college is exciting but can be overwhelming, especially while you’re trying to keep your financial goals top of mind,” Brian Creagh, Senior Vice President of Credit Cards and Education Lending at Navy Federal Credit Union. “Luckily, there are many resources available to help students and parents navigate the college decision process.”

So, where do you begin?

1. Research schools

It’s important to give yourself time to explore different colleges. Make a wish list of schools — from the size of the school and location to area of study and post-graduation career opportunities. It’s also a good idea to attend college fairs, so you can talk with college representatives and current students.

From your list of schools, check out their options for touring the campus — either in-person or online. There may be limited capacity for in-person tours, so schedule early. By attending campus tours, you’ll get a feel for the campus environment, and ultimately, if a particular college is a good fit for you.

2. Budget for campus visits

Expenses for traveling to and from college tours can add up quickly. Whether nearby or out-of-state, know the maximum amount that you or your parents are able to spend on these visits. This includes the cost of gas, airfare, food, accommodations and other activities. Consider even setting up a separate bank account for money to use toward college visits. That way, you’ll be prepared to stick to your budget.

3. Get your questions about classes and campus life answered

Most in-person college visits are led by student tour guides — giving you a great opportunity to hear their perspective about academic programs, admissions and student life. Additionally, make use of a college’s offer to talk with current professors and students. If you’re unable to attend in-person, this is a way to still experience the school and people.

Other questions to cover can include housing options, sports and extracurricular activities that interest you personally or are unique to a school.

4. Find out what financial aid options are available

The College Board reported that tuition and fees reached over $10,560 for in-state students at four-year public colleges and more than $37,650 for students at four-year private colleges in the 2020-21 academic year.

Look into financial aid options, such as scholarships, grants and work-study programs. When federal student loans, grants or scholarships don’t cover your total costs, private student loans are a great way to bridge the gap in funding. Many lenders offer private student loans up to the school-certified cost of attendance, including tuition fees, books, computers, meals and housing.

“A good repayment strategy while you’re in school can also help reduce your overall loan balance before you graduate,” said Creagh. “This allows you to chip away at your student debt faster and build your credit history.”

Why now is the time to talk to your allergy specialist about ragweed

2021-05-20T09:01:00

(BPT) – Spring has sprung, and for many of us, that means the start of bothersome allergy symptoms. In fact, between 30 and 60 million Americans are affected by environmental allergies each year,[1] making it one of the leading causes of chronic disease in the U.S. Allergies are caused by the body’s immune system overreacting to substances in the environment, causing symptoms like a runny nose, sneezing, congestion or sinus pressure.[2]

One of the more common environmental allergy triggers is ragweed pollen. Ragweed plants grow wild in most areas in the U.S. from August through November and produce pollen, a powdery substance made up of grains that help fertilize other ragweed plants. One ragweed plant can release up to one billion pollen grains into the air that can end up in your nose, eyes or mouth, potentially triggering an allergic reaction.[3]

The good news is that if you or your children suffer from certain allergies, like ragweed pollen, there is a treatment option that works differently from allergy medicines like antihistamines, decongestants and nasal sprays that just treat symptoms once they occur. They can work quickly to relieve bothersome symptoms but don’t address the allergy’s trigger and often cause side effects that can be a problem for some people. That’s where allergy immunotherapy, or AIT, comes in. AIT works with the body naturally to treat the underlying cause of allergies. It trains the immune system gradually to stop attacking allergens, eliminating or significantly reducing symptoms.[4] There are two types of AIT: subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT), which are injections administered just under the skin, often called allergy shots; and sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT), given as a fast-dissolving tablet under the tongue.

“For many years, allergy shots were the only option for AIT. They contain extracts individually mixed by an allergy specialist based on a person’s allergy triggers and are administered in the allergist’s office,”3 said David I. Bernstein, FAAAAI, FACAAI, FACP, MD, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Bernstein Clinical Research, and ALK-Abelló, Inc. spokesperson. “Unfortunately, not everyone has the time for weekly visits to the doctor and some may be hesitant to receive shots. Sublingual immunotherapy tablets are a newer form of AIT to treat certain allergens, including ragweed pollen, that offer a daily, oral option for people suffering from these types of allergens.”

RAGWITEK® (Short Ragweed Pollen Allergen Extract) is an FDA-approved prescription allergy medicine taken daily in the form of a quickly dissolving tablet you place under your tongue. The first dose is taken at the doctor’s office, but then the tablet can be taken at home.3 RAGWITEK can be prescribed to allergy sufferers from the ages of five to 65. RAGWITEK is taken for about 12 weeks before the ragweed pollen allergy season and throughout ragweed allergy season. RAGWITEK is NOT a medication that gives immediate relief for symptoms of ragweed allergy.

Seek an Early Diagnosis

Although ragweed pollen will not appear until late summer, now is the best time to start talking to your allergy specialist about RAGWITEK. Starting treatment early gives your body time to become less sensitive in preparation for the ragweed pollen season helping reduce your symptoms and need for allergy medications. Ragweed pollen season varies regionally, and typically peaks in mid-September in the U.S.[5]

If you or your child suffer from seasonal allergies, now is the time to see an allergy specialist who can usually determine what allergens trigger symptoms during an office visit.

“There are effective and safe treatment options available for people with allergic rhinitis, but the key is to see an allergy specialist for an evaluation and accurate diagnosis,” Dr. Bernstein noted. “An allergist can do simple in-office tests to determine what exactly a person is allergic to and recommend treatment that will be most effective for that individual and fits with their lifestyle and treatment preferences.”

Answers to some of the biggest car mysteries

2021-05-20T08:01:00

(BPT) – Life is full of unanswered questions — many involving cars and driving. For example: Why does Hawaii have interstate highways? Why do you park in a driveway and drive on a parkway? Why do drivers turn down the radio when they’re looking for an address?

Some of these and other puzzling life questions may have no real answers. But the very act of asking questions provides opportunities to re-evaluate and reassess everything — leading to creative re-imagining that’s essential when you’re trying to improve on the status quo.

That was the inspiration behind the development of the all-new 2022 Tucson. Hyundai’s designers and engineers questioned everything, allowing them to come up with innovative solutions and cutting-edge features unlike anything you have seen in vehicles before.

Unexplained car mysteries

Have you had any perplexing car mysteries on your mind? Some of the questions you may have been pondering about your car actually DO have answers, such as:

  • Who came up with the idea for cruise control? Ralph Teetor (1890-1982), the inventor who first developed cruise control, was blind. He was inspired to invent cruise control by riding with his attorney, who had a habit of erratically varying his speed as he drove.
  • Why does the car honk at me after I lock it and walk away? It’s the 2022 Hyundai Tucson’s Ultrasonic Rear Occupant Alert. Did you check your backseat for children or pets? The honk reminds you to check your backseat if it detects movement.
  • Why does the car beep when I walk behind it? That’s the Hands-free Smart Liftgate to allow easier access to your cargo area. The 2022 Tucson has a handsfree liftgate that will automatically open the trunk if you stand behind the vehicle for three seconds.
  • What do silent films and turns signals have in common? Inventor Florence Lawrence is credited with creating the first turn signal for cars, but she was best known as America’s first movie star, as she starred in nearly 300 silent films starting in 1906.

Questioning everything leads to technological advancements

Asking questions and reimagining a vehicle’s design results in developing bold new solutions, like the following advanced technological features of the 2022 Tucson:

  • Digital Key: With the Digital Key, owners can leave traditional keys at home — and it allows secure sharing of keys with family and friends. The Digital Key is supported by a dedicated smartphone app, allowing smartphones to control selected vehicle systems remotely. Users can use the Digital Key to lock and unlock the vehicle, activate the panic alert and start the engine.
  • 10.25-inch Infotainment Touch Screen: This large, futuristic interactive touch screen streamlines the interior design and provides drivers and passengers comprehensive controls and information.

  • Hidden Parametric Headlights: Tucson’s integration of technology and design is seen in their innovative half-mirror type daytime running lamps (DRLs) that are blended seamlessly within the parametric grille, visible only when they’re illuminated.

  • Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid Powertrain Options: The new Tucson offers both a Smartstream™ 2.5-liter, direct-injected and multi-port-injected gasoline engine, as well as 1.6-liter, direct-injected, turbocharged hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains to choose from.
  • Remote Features: These include Remote Smart Park Assist, and through Hyundai’s Blue Link® Connected Car System, Remote Start with Climate Control and Remote Seat Heating and Ventilation.
  • Dynamic Voice Recognition: Voice commands can conveniently perform specific controls for the cabin, including temperature adjustment, radio, hatch opening and closing, heated steering wheel, heated/cooled seats and others. The voice recognition system can also assist with various points of interest like weather status.

These are just some of the latest innovations on the new model. In addition, the new Tucson offers more standard and available active safety features than any other SUV in its class to help keep drivers, passengers and others out of harm’s way.

Transform your old, cracked or weathered concrete patio into a backyard oasis

2021-05-20T04:01:01

(BPT) – After being cooped up inside your home for over a year, you and your family are probably more than ready to get together outside to eat, have fun and just enjoy the warmer weather. Whether it’s with family or friends, as you start to spend more time playing and relaxing in your yard, you may also notice that your outdoor space doesn’t look as good as it could. Why not take the opportunity to upgrade the look of your old, worn, cracked or weather-damaged concrete patio or walkways?

If you’re looking for a solution to give these areas new life, it’s easier — and more affordable — than you think, and the new look can be achieved as a simple one-day DIY project. However, if you don’t have the time or inclination to do it yourself, you could easily hire a contractor to take care of it for you.

Improving the look and feel of your entire patio space starts from the ground up. Setting the stage for a more elegant, attractive outdoor environment can be as simple as using thin pavers (30mm) to transform your patio’s surface, and you can do it right on top of the existing concrete patio, walkway or pool deck — with no demolition required.

For example, Milano pavers from Pavestone are specifically designed to install over existing concrete surfaces. They feature modular square and rectangular shapes with a distinctive textured surface that evokes the timeless appeal of weathered cut flagstone. These pavers install easily and quickly, creating the aesthetic of historical old-world pavements to add a sense of beauty to your outdoor space.

These pavers are also versatile. The Milano system consists of three sizes (small, medium and large), so you can purchase just one size or multiple sizes, depending on the look and pattern you want to achieve. You can use a single size to achieve a stacked, running or herringbone pattern — or you can install them as a 3-piece system to create a variety of patterns. The pavers are lightweight and only 1-3/16” high, making them simple to install, but also exclusively meant for use for foot traffic and not suitable for driveways or other areas designed for heavy objects or vehicles.

How to install pavers

Creating a beautiful new outdoor space with 30mm overlay pavers requires four easy steps:

  1. Spread a thin, leveling layer of paver sand over the existing concrete slab.
  2. Place the pavers in your desired pattern using a rubber mallet to tap them level.
  3. Bond the perimeter course of pavers to the existing concrete with construction adhesive.
  4. Spread patio paver sand, then use a broom to spread the sand into the paver joints.

What you’ll need to install pavers

Want to DIY your new patio, walkway or pool deck? It’s a straightforward process to install new pavers to overlay an existing concrete surface.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Pavers
  • Pavestone’s Patio Paver Sand
  • Rake or screed
  • Rubber mallet (to tap pavers into place if needed)
  • Concrete saw or table saw with diamond blade
  • Safety glasses, gloves and dust mask
  • Right angle ruler
  • Carpenter’s pencil

3 dreamy deck building products that sidestep sky-high lumber prices

2021-05-19T10:01:00

(BPT) – According to a recent survey on the latest outdoor living trends, home improvement pros and deck building specialists tell Qualified Remodeler magazine that, “everyone is thinking about building something bigger, better, stronger and wider,” and that “homeowners are requesting increasingly larger, more customized decks.” The appeal of more expansive, retreat-worthy decks should come as no surprise considering the unencumbered enthusiasm for outdoor living that has swept the country over the course of a notably unprecedented year.

If you also find yourself dreaming about building a sprawling deck to relax on this summer, first consider the type of building materials you’ll need to tackle the project. Lumber has been the traditional deck building material of choice, largely for its low upfront cost and familiarity. However, the series of lumber mill closures in the spring of 2020 wreaked havoc on the building industry’s supply chain, sending lumber prices through the roof. The outdoor living explosion has only further driven up the price. In fact, industry findings from April 2021 reported the price of lumber had jumped to a record-breaking $1,048 per thousand board feet — up nearly 200% from the start of the pandemic. Demand for the commodity product is only poised to grow during peak outdoor living months.

Don’t let historically high lumber prices empty your wallet or material scarcity put your deck project on hold altogether. Innovative manufacturers are bringing wood-alternative offerings to the table that provide weatherability, premium performance and unmatched customization capabilities. Consider these three alternative building products before you break the bank building your dream deck.

1. Composite decking

One of the many allures of today’s composite decking is that it emulates the natural wood grain aesthetic and richness that standard wood deck boards provide, but lacks the propensity to warp, crack or deteriorate over time. Because it’s incredibly resilient and can handle whatever Mother Nature throws its way, it will stand strong and look beautiful underfoot wherever you call home, from mountainous snow-shrouded settings to sun-parched desert landscapes. What’s more, composite deck boards are engineered to last longer than traditional wood decking. Leading brands offer products that can last 25 years or more, making these readily available boards a sustainable and cost-effective purchase when considering product longevity. With its impressive wood-emulation and enduring composition, composite decking is a smart choice for deck projects.

2. Steel deck framing

Once surface boards have been selected, it’s time to think about where your boards will rest. While pressure treated lumber is often the de facto deck framing material of choice, soaring lumber prices and availability concerns are now shedding light on alternatives like steel. Strong and durable, many are beginning to recognize how well steel performs as the underbelly of a deck system. “Since today’s wood-alternative deck boards are engineered to last for several decades, homeowners want enduring framing materials that can match the longevity of their surface boards,” said Toby Bostwick, VP of Product & Brand at Fortress Building Products. “The benefits of purchasing a steel framing system make a lot of sense from an investment standpoint, especially when factoring in material longevity, ongoing maintenance costs and treated lumber’s current market rate.”

Framing with steel will also eliminate issues associated with moisture absorption, one of the most common reasons wood frame decks begin to show signs of decomposition. In fact, steel is resistant to most tangible threats, including rot and decay, fungi, pests (such as termites) and weathering. In application, this means steel frame profiles will keep surface boards flat and smooth underneath your feet, safeguarding your investment. Not only does steel framing offer long-lasting support for your chosen deck boards, but it also offers a modern, high-end aesthetic that’s rising in demand. While the rising price of pressure treated lumber and the current lumber shortage will certainly drive framing trends this summer – the shift in mentality may be permanent, given steel’s impressive performance.

3. Aluminum railing

While it’s certainly natural to gravitate toward a familiar railing material like wood as you finish out your deck project, an aluminum system can bring strength and personality to a larger deck at a cost-effective price point. A wholly customizable railing system, the aluminum panels of Al¹³ HOME™ from Fortress Building Products can be personalized with an array of infill options — including cable and glass insets — to accommodate the vision behind your dream deck. What’s more, the system comes with an Accent Top Rail (ATR) and cap rail clips, and is dressed in a multi-layered anti-corrosion powder coating for a no-fuss solution. Not only does this ensure lasting style and safety around the perimeter of a deck, but it also helps create a finished deck structure that requires very little upkeep. For peace of mind, the railing is backed by a limited lifetime warranty. With its dreamy customization capabilities and strong warranty, this readily available aluminum railing solution is something your family can “lean” on this summer.

Build a bigger, better, stronger deck now

With today’s wood-alternative building products within reach, there’s no need to put your deck project on hold until debilitating lumber prices retreat. Instead, you can “deck” out your larger-than-life outdoor living space with dreamy solutions that serve up performance and lasting style.

(BPT) – As we begin to transition out of the pandemic, it’s important to consider steps that can help provide you and your loved ones a more stable financial future. Just consider that 41% of U.S. employees are living paycheck to paycheck right now, and the same number of employees don’t feel in control of their finances, according to MetLife’s 2021 U.S. Employee Benefit Trends Study.

To change course, employees should consider reviewing the benefits their employers offer, including disability insurance, which offers a vital source of income protection that may help cover essential living costs such as food, clothing and mortgage payments in the event you are unable to work due to a qualifying physical or mental health condition. In fact, MetLife’s study shows that employees with disability insurance feel more confident in protecting what matters most to them in the event of unexpected expenses than those without disability (66% with versus 59% without disability insurance).

Financial protection for those caring for loved ones

While almost everyone has been impacted by the financial stressors of the pandemic, caregivers may feel an increased burden. Caring for family members can be overwhelming — leaving many unsure about their short-term and long-term financial goals. In fact, MetLife’s study finds that 4 in 10 caregivers don’t have a savings cushion of at least three months.

These financial concerns are also just as real for pet parents. Expenses related to pets can become a burden should a pet parent suddenly become unable to work. To avoid having to dip into long-term savings to pay for short-term expenses, pet parents should consider having disability insurance to ensure their pets’ needs can be met in the event of something unforeseen.

What’s more, disability insurance may also help provide security for those struggling with serious medical conditions, like cancer, stroke or heart attack, especially when paired with supplemental benefits like critical illness insurance. Critical illness insurance may help cover expenses not covered by health insurance, like plan deductibles, copays and costs for out-of-network care.

Support extends beyond financial health

After a year of lockdowns and uncertainty, you may, like many others, feel more stressed and anxious about your financial future than ever before. This stress and anxiety can often build — reducing mental wellness and even hindering your ability to care for yourself and your loved ones.

However, taking hold of your financial health may help alleviate some of these anxieties — ensuring that you and your family are able to focus on healing, not your finances. Caregivers, for example, who have a savings cushion of at least 3 months are 47% more likely to say they feel mentally healthy than those who do not.

By having disability insurance and other supportive benefits as part of your financial wellness arsenal, you can feel some additional security in the event you are unexpectedly unable to work. Taking action to improve financial security can have a positive impact on reducing stress and anxiety, allowing you to provide you and your loved ones more secure care now and in the future.

How to make your dream outdoor room a reality

2021-05-19T00:01:00

(BPT) – As the pandemic continues, outdoor spaces have become true extensions of the home. From a calm place to escape to an area to work and focus, outdoor rooms are being designed and utilized more frequently than ever before.

“Homeowners have shifted their focus from having spaces to entertain to making their homes more functional,” says Joe Raboine, director of residential hardscapes, Belgard. “With the increased time spent at home, outdoor spaces have become a haven for both recreation and relaxation, as well as a valuable asset when it’s time to resell.”

With over 25 years as an outdoor designer, Raboine has unique insight into the outdoor living industry. He expects biophilic design trends to gain momentum in the future as people continue craving a connection to nature. This design approach prioritizes customizing spaces that flow with the natural landscape, benefitting both human health and environmental wellness.

As people spend more time outdoors from the safety and comfort of home, they are investing in the creation of outdoor rooms. Some of the most popular options that complement a property and are used frequently by homeowners are outdoor dining rooms, living rooms, kitchens and offices.

Planning the right outdoor room for you

If you are considering adding a dream outdoor space to your property, it’s important to properly plan. Start by exploring different designs and building plans that might be right for your needs and space.

Belgard Rooms is a great resource for planning outdoor rooms. The interactive site at Belgard.com/Rooms makes it easy to identify needs, pair designs that complement the style of your home and define your overall plan. Once you find one you like, you can download the plan for free and share it with contractors to get bids on the project.

“Belgard Rooms is segmented by room type and structured around how shape, color and texture work together to offer more options and make the design planning process easier,” says Raboine.

Beyond convenience, this is beneficial from a timing and installation perspective. The templated designs can be customized to fit homeowners’ needs and tastes. This means contractors require less time for the design and installation process, and you are able to enjoy your outdoor space sooner.

Next steps: Budget tips

After you find a plan you like, it’s time to consider budget and connecting with contractors. This insight from Raboine will help you in managing budget:

Research typical project costs in your area

Ask neighbors if they have completed similar projects. Get multiple quotes from several contractors. Go beyond labor costs and determine product costs online to understand the big picture financially. To give yourself options, look for alternative products that are similar in price.

Research contractors and gather bids

Get multiple bids from contractors. Given the current circumstances, this year is busy for contractors, in terms of both scheduling and inventory. So, keep in mind price is only one consideration; experience, licenses, references, turnaround time and satisfaction guarantees are other important factors.

Determine a payment schedule

Understand payment options and if materials are included in those fees. You may want to plan the project in phases to meet your budget. Additionally, you can ask about financing options, which may allow you to take advantage of construction efficiencies and avoid a phased build.

More complex projects cost more

Make sure you understand specific construction or engineering requirements. Linear design requires less cutting and building, resulting in lower costs compared to circular or winding patterns. Leveling your land can be costly, so consider building down into the slope.

“Schedules for contractors nationwide are filling up, so now is the time to take action with your outdoor projects by finding designs you like, gathering bids and making your dream outdoor room a reality,” said Raboine.

Traveling this summer? 4 tips to protect your personal data

2021-05-18T08:01:00

(BPT) – Since the pandemic began, you’ve likely been more connected to your digital devices than ever before. From work meetings and virtual happy hours to online shopping, more events and transactions are taking place digitally. And as connectivity and device adoption continues to rise, it’s important to understand the cyber risks and how to best protect your personal data and information, especially when it comes to planning your summer travel.

“As travel becomes an actual possibility for people once again, it’s an opportunity to remember just how important maintaining digital wellness and security is outside the home,” said Judith Bitterli, senior vice president of consumer marketing for McAfee. “Whether people are at home or away this summer, there will be banking to do, chances to shop online and moments to stream shows and movies. A simple mindset shift goes a long way in protecting our personal information.”

From short-term rentals and staycations to international travel, take steps to actively protect your devices and data this summer travel season and beyond. To help you take initiative in maintaining your digital wellness, McAfee offers several tips to protect yourself at all connection points whether you’re out on the road or simply staying at home.

Connect with caution

The hotel where you stay or café where you catch up on emails might boast about their fast, free Wi-Fi, but always be wary of public Wi-Fi connections. When you’re traveling, make sure the Wi-Fi is secure and attached to a trusted source. And while you’re connected to a public network, never conduct any financial transactions or share any personal details. If you can, use incognito or private browsing mode to keep any details from being saved while you’re using public Wi-Fi.

Consider a holistic security solution

Understand what tools are available to you in order to give you peace of mind that your identity and personal information across all of your devices are safeguarded. Mobile security systems offer antivirus, identity protection, secure VPN connections and even gamer security.

Update your software

Before you travel, check for any software and security updates on your devices. Those annoying prompts are there for a reason — don’t ignore them. Updates often fix security bugs and seal up cracks in the system that may affect your digital wellness. Be sure to run the updates while your device is plugged in and securely connected to the internet.

Protect your devices and keep them close

Distracted vacationers are the perfect target for thieves looking to steal devices, from phones and laptops to tablets and gaming systems. First, set up a PIN code or password for all your devices. On your laptop, use a long password with numbers and symbols that isn’t easy to guess. Additionally, check to make sure your accounts have multi-factor authentication — which double-checks the authenticity of a user trying to log in — in case your device gets in the wrong hands.

A little effort goes a long way in preserving your digital wellness. Before you travel this summer, follow these tips and spend some extra time setting up your devices and security plans to ensure your personal information is secure.
