Heat pumps vs. air conditioners: Tips to select the best unit for your home

2023-08-17T09:01:00

(BPT) – When deciding on HVAC solutions, choosing between a heat pump or an air conditioner continues to be a hot debate for many homeowners. The truth of the matter is, both options can efficiently cool your home and provide comfort. The units look almost identical from the outside and work by extracting heat from the air inside of your home. Then, the units use refrigerant to transfer that heat outside on warm days, thereby cooling your home.

The choice between the two ultimately depends on factors homeowners need to weigh such as location, efficiency and sustainability. To make a well-informed decision, the following compares what homeowners should consider in order to select the best unit for a home’s needs.

Comfort year round: Unpacking the versatility of heat pumps

While heat pumps and air conditioners can cool a home effectively, only heat pumps can provide warmth during colder weather. Heat pumps can operate in reverse, efficiently extracting heat from the outside air, even in lower temperatures, and transfer it inside to create a warm and comfortable home. Advancements in heat pump technology have greatly improved heat pump operation and performance, even in very cold conditions, making them a great choice for colder areas that may not have been considered heat pump territories in the past. If one lives in an area that experiences cooler temperatures, a heat pump may be the better choice.

When considering a heat pump, it’s important to evaluate the following factors:

  • Geographic location: The outside temperature plays a significant role in the efficiency of a heat pump. If a potential user lives in an area with chilly temperatures, a heat pump can provide both cooling and heating, making it a suitable option. However, if a user lives in a place that experiences frigid temperatures, a dual-fuel option may be a better fit. Often overlooked, a dual-fuel system includes a heat pump and gas furnace. On days with extreme cold temperatures, the furnace will ensure that homes stay comfortable despite freezing weather conditions.
  • Size of home: A properly sized heat pump is crucial for optimal performance. A unit that is too small may struggle to adequately heat or cool a home, while an oversized unit can lead to energy wastage. Variable capacity heat pumps can modulate their capacity to match the load inside the home, allowing them to provide the proper amount of heat without the need to oversize the system.
  • Existing systems: Assess the home’s infrastructure, including ductwork, electrical wiring and any pre-existing temperature control solutions. This is essential to determine if a heat pump can be seamlessly integrated into a home’s current setup.
  • Budget: Heat pump installation costs can vary depending on the home and location. To evaluate the cost for a heat pump system, a homeowner should first assess their current system. If a homeowner’s current system is older, a new system with a higher energy-efficiency rating could reduce energy bills and help offset the cost of the new system. It’s also worth noting that if a home is located in an area where electrical rates are lower than gas prices, this may also offset the cost of installation by providing a total reduction in energy costs. Contact a professional who can run a whole-home evaluation to help figure out potential energy savings.

Cooling comfort explored: Unveiling the cooler side of air conditioners

Air conditioners also offer cooling capabilities, making them another option for those residing in warmer climates who solely require a reliable cooling solution for their homes year-round. With a focus on efficient cooling, air conditioners excel at providing a refreshing and comfortable indoor environment (even more so when using inverter technology). In situations where both cooling and heating are necessary, and if a homeowner already has an AC unit installed, an additional heat source, such as a furnace, is required.

Consider the following factors when opting for an air conditioner:

  • Geographic location: If the home is located in an area that experiences predominantly warm temperatures, an air conditioner can successfully cool the home year-round.
  • Size of home: Similar to heat pumps, selecting the proper sized air conditioner is crucial for efficient cooling. An appropriately sized unit will maintain a comfortable indoor environment without wasting energy. If the unit is undersized, it will never reach the desired temperature. Whereas if it is oversized, it will reach the temperature too quick and cycle off, allowing the space to heat back up quickly leading to temperature spikes and in humid climates it will not run long enough to remove humidity from the home.
  • Existing systems: Assess the home’s infrastructure to ensure compatibility with an air conditioning system. Proper ductwork and electrical wiring are essential for seamless installation.
  • Budget: Air conditioners generally have a lower upfront cost compared to heat pumps. However, it’s important to consider the long-term energy consumption and operating costs required to operate an air conditioner.

Other factors to consider when selecting an effective home unit are Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) approved match and home energy incentives. By selecting an air conditioner or heat pump that is an AHRI approved match, it will ensure the units run at optimal efficiency. Additionally, matched systems may qualify for rebates and incentives that can effectively reduce the overall cost, making them more budget friendly.

Many government organizations and utility companies offer incentives to encourage homeowners to choose energy-efficient solutions. These offers can come in the form of tax credits, rebates or other financial incentives. Both heat pumps and select air conditioners align with the growing trend toward electrification. By utilizing electricity as the main power source, these units reduce dependence on fossil fuels and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Mission alignment: How to get the most out of business-nonprofit partnerships

2023-08-16T14:01:00

(BPT) – National Nonprofit Day (Aug. 17) provides an important reminder for companies. Partnering with the right nonprofits can help them achieve social objectives and make a greater impact.

The rise of corporate social responsibility (CSR), environmental, social, and governance (ESG), and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives have many companies reevaluating how to operate ethically, responsibly, and sustainably. Fortunately, the strategies that result can guide companies in evaluating the right nonprofit partners to help advance their goals.

Do your research

According to Nonprofits Source, 90% of companies said partnering with reputable nonprofit organizations enhances their brand. In addition, 89% believe doing so leverages their ability to improve the community.

Companies looking for the right partner can start by researching nonprofits with a reputation for effecting change.

Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP), for example, is celebrating 20 years of serving the nation’s post-9/11 wounded veterans and their families. WWP invested nearly $250 million in programs in 2022 and offers free services in mental health, career counseling, long-term rehabilitative care, and policy advocacy.

More than 90% of the organization’s donors said they would recommend supporting WWP to a friend or family member, according to a recent WWP survey.

“The support we receive from partners and other supporters helps us deliver free programs and services that improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of warriors and their loved ones,” said WWP’s Vice President of Business Development Brea Kratzert Todd. “Corporate partners, in particular, help to expand our reach, enhance our programs, and improve our advocacy efforts for warriors and their families across the nation.”

Commit to a cause

Mission alignment is important when it comes to corporate-nonprofit partnerships. According to Edelman’s 2022 Trust Barometer, 65% of U.S. consumers buy or advocate for brands based on their beliefs and values. Consider supporting organizations committed to causes that company stakeholders admire.

For instance, C4 Energy®, owned by Nutrabolt, found natural alignment with WWP among its energy drink consumers.

“Throughout our company’s 20-year history, veterans and active military have been an important part of our consumer base given their high-performance lifestyle,” said Katie Geyer, VP of talent, partnerships & experience at Nutrabolt. “Working with Wounded Warrior Project gives us a unique opportunity to partner with a leading organization that could directly relate to a consumer that we care deeply about and are authentic users of the brand.”

C4 Energy’s partnership with WWP includes exclusive energy drink and pre-workout flavors. The co-branded cans feature a dedicated QR code for consumers to support the mission of WWP and learn how to get involved. C4 Energy also impacts local communities by hosting WWP fundraisers and sponsoring WWP’s Carry Forward® 5K races.

Measure impact

The more companies can show value to investors, consumers, employees, and the community, the better. Setting measurable key performance indicators (KPIs) to reach CSR or ESG goals is one way companies can track their progress.

CSX, a national transportation company, provides a great example of tracking and providing impact metrics from its Pride in Service initiative. In their recently released 2022 ESG Report, they highlighted their support of over 315,000 military, veterans, first responders, and their families in the past year. This included the 212,000 wounded warriors whose voices were amplified through the company’s sponsorship of WWP’s Annual Warrior Survey, which provides insights on the current needs and challenges of warriors registered with the organization.

CSX is now helping remove veteran employment barriers by supporting WWP’s Warriors to Work® program. This program provides warriors and their family members the necessary tools to succeed in civilian jobs. In fiscal year 2022, Wounded Warrior Project placed over 1,700 warriors and family members in new careers.

“We’re proud to have reached so many wounded warriors across the country, providing them with the support they need to make the challenging transition to the civilian workforce,” said Bryan Tucker, CSX vice president of corporate communications. “Our work with partners like Wounded Warrior Project is more than just writing a check; it’s about investing time and resources in true partnership to combine our talents in service of communities in need.”

Take the next step

These steps help narrow the prospective nonprofit partner list and lead to conversations about ways to work together.

Collaborating with nonprofits can make company initiatives easier to define, measure, and celebrate. In turn, nonprofits benefit from the company’s contributed resources and reach.

Together, the two entities can be a driving force for change that benefits the corporation and its communities.

Sponsor a program or become a partner like C4 Energy and CSX to help Wounded Warrior Project empower, employ, and engage veterans in communities nationwide.

5 ways to support active duty and retired Sailors, Marines and their families

2023-08-16T00:01:00

(BPT) – Military families are incredibly resilient. They face unique challenges compared to their civilian counterparts. Between frequent relocations to deployments and other disruptions to their routines, life can be difficult for the 2.6 million military family members across the globe.

Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) knows how important it is to provide assistance for Sailors and Marines during their time of need, and that stable and happy military family members are good for national security. To support these Sea Service members, NMCRS offers free, confidential services to active duty and retired Sailors, Marines and their loved ones to get them through difficult times so they can focus on what truly matters.

In 2022 alone, over 179,000 clients received assistance through NMCRS programs and services. Read on to learn about five ways the Society invests in and supports the well-being of Sea Service families.

1. Financial assistance

With inflation on the rise, so many within the military are attempting to make the best of their financial situation. So, when unexpected car repairs or bills come up, it can be stressful for military families. That’s why NMCRS provides interest-free loans and grants along with financial education to help Sailors, Marines and their families during their time of need.

Just last year, the Society provided $45.9 million in financial assistance to Sea Service members. In one case, a Marine needed $3,700 for a transmission repair. Instead of financing the repairs with a personal loan from the bank at 17% interest, they were able to access an interest-free loan at NMCRS. This is just one way NMCRS provides judgment-free help when military families face financial challenges.

2. Educational assistance

Many service members, spouses and children desire an undergraduate and/or graduate education. To help military families achieve their academic dreams, the NMCRS Education Assistance Program offers grants and interest-free loans to children of active duty, retired and qualifying deceased Sailors and Marines, as well as active duty and retired spouses.

Last year, the Society provided more than 300 grants and interest-free loans for undergraduate and graduate studies of children of active duty, retired or qualifying deceased Sailors and Marines. Scholarships range from $500-$3,000, and loans are available up to $4,000.

3. Visiting nurse program

Between relocation and deployments, it can be difficult for military families to keep up with their health. Thanks to the Society’s Visiting Nurse Program, many military members and their families can access health education and resource referrals no matter where they’re stationed.

NMCRS’ registered nurses provide health education for all stages of life via home and virtual visits. This includes prenatal, newborn, pediatric and adult health concerns. Nurses also assist in helping clients understand and achieve their health and well-being goals and field general health and wellness questions.

4. Welcoming a new addition to the family

Expecting a baby is an exciting time for a family. There’s so much to prepare for, including planning for the financial impact of a baby. The NMCRS Budget for Baby® program offers in-person and virtual financial education workshops to expectant parents.

These workshops help expectant parents develop a basic financial plan, learn how to save money, find local resources and meet other expectant Navy and Marine Corps parents. As a bonus, participants receive a handcrafted blanket and gift card.

5. Emergency travel

When a family member is seriously ill or has passed away, military families may struggle to arrange travel or find the funds to do so. NMCRS is there to assist during these challenging times. The Society helps with expedited travel arrangements and financial assistance so Sailors, Marines and their families can focus on what matters.

These are just a few of the ways NMCRS supports active duty and retired Navy and Marine Corps families in the U.S. and abroad. To learn more about NMCRS programs, visit NMCRS.org and download a free resource guide.

No Longer Afraid to Hide Her Skin, Jillian’s Story Living with Psoriasis

(BPT) – By Arcutis Biotherapeutics

Psoriasis Action Month is about raising awareness of psoriasis and its impact, and encouraging individuals with this common skin disease to get the support and care that they need.

About 80 to 90 percent of people with psoriasis have plaque psoriasis, which often appears as raised, red and scaly plaques. However, in people with darker skin tones, plaques sometimes may appear more grayish, purplish or brownish. Plaque psoriasis can occur anywhere − yes, anywhere − on the body, including the knees, elbows, torso, and sensitive places like the face, genitals, and areas where skin touches skin. In these areas, psoriasis may appear as smooth and non-scaly lesions. Symptoms of plaque psoriasis can include pain, cracking skin and itching.

Diagnosing and treating plaque psoriasis can be complex and challenging − something Jillian knows firsthand. Jillian dealt with symptoms of plaque psoriasis on the back of her neck for 12 years before getting an accurate diagnosis and a treatment that worked for her.

“My symptoms first started in high school, when I had an irritated patch of skin develop on my hairline. As time went on, this turned into full-on scaly plaques along my hairline on the back of my neck. Throughout the last 10 years, those plaques started to grow and spread like tree branches down the side of my neck,” said Jillian. “I had a ton of tests done over the years, but only got a diagnosis of plaque psoriasis late last year.”

As a personal trainer and dietitian, Jillian spends most of her days teaching others about healthy habits and how to love the skin they’re in. Because of her profession, she spends most of the time with her hair up, which made her plaque psoriasis more visible, and made her feel self-conscious.

“In my profession, it’s hard to have a condition like this because, unfortunately, people view your own health as a direct reflection of the quality of your professional knowledge. It also takes a toll on your mental health when you feel like you have to explain to everyone − from people at work to your hairdresser − that what they’re seeing isn’t contagious or anything to worry about,” she said.

Recently, Jillian tried a steroid-free cream, ZORYVE® (roflumilast) cream 0.3%, that is a prescription medicine used on the skin (topical), including in areas with skin folds, to treat plaque psoriasis in people 12 years of age and older. It is not known if ZORYVE is safe and effective in children under 12 years of age.

“Over the years I’ve tried almost everything out there − from various prescriptions to over-the-counter options and natural remedies. But they didn’t work for me and were really complicated to use, and my plaque psoriasis just kept coming back,” she explains. “I started applying ZORYVE daily, and it began working within weeks to manage both the visible symptoms of my plaque psoriasis by clearing my skin, and even the itch, too. Now, I can use ZORYVE when my psoriasis flares, and since it is steroid free, I feel comfortable using it wherever I have psoriasis. I also like that the cream is not greasy or messy, it spreads easily, and I just need to apply a small amount.”

In clinical trials, approximately 40% of 576 people treated with ZORYVE had significantly clearer skin, compared to approximately 6% of 305 people treated with a cream not containing the active ingredient at 8 weeks. Additionally, approximately 68% of the 447 people treated with ZORYVE had significant itch reduction, compared to approximately 30% of the 231 people treated with a cream not containing the active ingredient.

Prior to being treated, Jillian was hyper aware of the clothing she would wear and how she’d style her hair to try and cover the back of her neck as much as possible. Now that her condition is under control, it’s one less thing she has to worry about.

“I used to be really embarrassed about my plaque psoriasis, but since I’ve found the right treatment that works for me, I no longer am,” said Jillian. “I’m also getting married in January and feel confident that my psoriasis will remain under control, so I don’t have to worry about clothing I wear during the events leading up to my wedding or how I wear my hair on my wedding day.”

If you’re struggling with psoriasis or any other skin concerns, be sure to make an appointment with a dermatology professional. They will work with you to get the care you need and help you find the right treatment plan.

ZORYVE is for use on the skin (topical only). Do not use ZORYVE in or on your eyes, mouth, or vagina. Do not use ZORYVE if you have certain liver problems.

Before using ZORYVE, tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions, including if you have liver problems, are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if ZORYVE will harm your unborn baby. Tell your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known if ZORYVE passes into your breast milk. Talk to your healthcare provider about the best way to feed your baby during treatment with ZORYVE. Breastfeeding women using ZORYVE should use ZORYVE on the smallest area of the skin and for the shortest time needed. Do not apply ZORYVE directly to the nipple and areola to avoid contact with your baby.

Tell your healthcare provider about the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

The most common side effects of ZORYVE include diarrhea, headache, trouble sleeping, nausea, application site pain, upper respiratory tract infections, and urinary tract infections (UTIs).

These are not all of the possible side effects of ZORYVE. Call your healthcare provider for medical advice about side effects. You are encouraged to report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

For more information about plaque psoriasis and product information for ZORYVE, a steroid-free topical that works across affected body areas, talk to your healthcare provider or visit www.zoryve.com.

Jillian lives with plaque psoriasis and is being compensated for her time contributing to this article. This is just one patient’s experience. Results may vary.

Air travel is a nightmare for people with disabilities: Here’s how you can help

2023-08-13T00:01:00

(BPT) – Have you ever checked in an important piece of luggage for a flight, like a guitar, a stroller or your favorite golf clubs, only to discover it was delayed or lost upon your arrival? You were probably frustrated at the lack of answers you were given and how long you had to wait. Were you able to easily replace it?

Now imagine you use a wheelchair and that it was not only lost or delayed, but damaged beyond repair. How could you even manage it?

You couldn’t. Specialized wheelchairs aren’t quickly and easily replaceable. They are customized for the people who use them.

Because of a lack of proper stowage and an inability to fly in their personal wheelchair, people with mobility disabilities are often forced to pray, worry or hope for the best outcome upon their arrival. This is just one of many issues that arise for people with disabilities when they travel by air. Others include inaccessible in-flight bathrooms and being dropped, or otherwise injured, in the process of getting on and off the plane.

Air travel takes a toll on equipment that’s vital for survival — over 32,000 wheelchairs were damaged, delayed or lost during air travel between 2019 and 2022. That’s about 31 wheelchairs per day, or like breaking the legs of up to 31 people every day without no timely support. And broken wheelchairs and scooters can result in the total loss of independence for weeks or months.

Surprisingly, air travel is light years behind all other modes of travel when it comes to accessibility, including buses and trains.

The solution? Congress must include accessible air travel standards in the upcoming Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reauthorization. They need to ensure that the reauthorization includes things like:

  • Increased training for workers
  • Improved complaint processing
  • Continued study into the ability to fly in a wheelchair

If this key language is not implemented, that will mean setting back civil rights for people with disabilities by 35 years. It would also mean more avoidable injuries, more broken chairs and more senseless deaths, like that of Engracia Figueroa, and more disabled veterans being trapped in their homes.

How Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) is fighting for change

If you think this barrier to safe, comfortable air travel doesn’t affect many people, think again: over 65 million Americans have a disability, with people aging into disability every day. The number is expected to skyrocket within the next five years. Even worse, many of these disabled people are veterans, who have already sacrificed so much to serve their country.

PVA is leading the fight for accessibility — and air travel accessibility is a major battle.

How you can join PVA’s fight

Everyone is in this together, and everyone has a part to play to protect the human rights of veterans and others with disabilities and make air travel more accessible. Contact your member of Congress to ensure that meaningful improvements are included in the FAA reauthorization and use #JustPlaneWrong on social media to continue the conversation.

Visit PVA.org/AirTravel for more information — and to access vital resources and travel tips for you or someone you know with a disability.

5 epic tips for the ultimate summer road trip

2023-08-13T09:01:00

(BPT) – Summer isn’t done yet — there’s still time to squeeze in one more epic adventure! Get ready to embrace the spirit of the season in the most unforgettable way possible: an incredible road trip.

The No. 1 rule of an unforgettable trip — knowing the journey is just as important as the destination. So, make sure your ride is on point to create those mind-blowing experiences you’ll be bragging about for years to come. Let the drive take you places you never imagined and live your best life to the absolute max.

You might be wondering how to get started with the best road trip. As the most crucial snack on any road-tripper’s packing list, Jack Link’s® knows how to put together the best road trip possible. You can start by following these five essential tips that will make your road trip legendary.

1. Pick a destination that screams fun!

Whether you’re flying solo, escaping with your fam or going on an adventure with your friends, you get to decide where the road will take you. Brainstorm some options and choose a destination that sets the vibe for an insanely good time.

Once you know where you’re headed, plan out the route and all the stops you want to make along the way. We’re talking gas stations with unique food options, unexpected detours that lead to unique experiences and quirky hangouts that give you a taste of the area’s culture.

While Route 66 and Zion National Park are classic road trip destinations, try digging deeper to find those hidden gems that will blow your mind as fun detours along the way. Plan stops at places like vintage towns in Utah, the caverns of Lim Rock, Alabama, or the blue oasis springs in southern Idaho. You never know what cool places you can find when you’re searching for new recommendations.

2. Snacks & goodies

Road trips and snacks are total BFFs. Pack all your favorite snacks and be ready to satisfy your hunger while you’re on the move. Sweet, salty, savory, you name it — just make sure you’ve got enough so you don’t get hangry.

According to the U.S. Snack Index from Frito-Lay and Quaker, three in four people say road trips are a prime opportunity to try new snacks. If you’re looking for the perfect grab-and-go option to level up your snacking experience on the road, check out new Jack Link’s® Doritos® Spicy Sweet Chili and Flamin’ Hot® Original flavored beef jerky and meat sticks from Jack Link’s and Frito-Lay.

Both Jack Link’s® Doritos® Spicy Sweet Chili and Flamin’ Hot® Original flavored beef jerky and meat sticks are available for purchase online and at retailers nationwide. To learn more about this collaboration, the flavors and where to find them near you, visit jacklinksfritolay.com.

3. Get your wheels in tip-top shape

Now that you’ve got your destination and route locked down, it’s time to give your wheels some serious TLC. Schedule an appointment to get your car road-trip ready with a tire rotation and oil change (because let’s be real, when’s the last time you actually did that).

Pay special attention to your air conditioning, especially during those scorching summer days. If your AC is acting up, sort it out before you hit the road. Everyone will appreciate the cool breeze as you carry on through your adventure.

And don’t forget to pack all the back-up necessities. Umbrellas, first-aid kits, and jumper cables are musts, but to really up your travel game, don’t forget your favorite water bottle, a packable cooler and portable phone chargers. Stash a few disposable cameras in the glove box to break out at the stops along the way to document your adventure. Once your car is good to go, you’ll be able to focus on the fun at every turn for the ultimate unforgettable trip.

4. Have your playlist ready for the aux cord

Now that you’ve got your destination set, your wheels ready and your snacks loaded, it’s time to crank up those tunes and rock out on the road. Before you head out, create a killer playlist that passes the vibe check for your entire journey.

Start with a mix of everyone’s favorite artists and tunes and remember not to limit yourself to just one genre. Mixing it up with a variety of different artists helps to make even the longest of drives feel like they aren’t long enough.

5. Let the good times roll

For lengthy road trips, keep the entertainment going with some fun games! Conversation starter packs are perfect for those long hours on the highway and can spark wild discussions you never saw coming.

A long road trip is also a great time to try out the new podcast your friend recommended that you haven’t gotten around to yet or listen to an audio book you’ve been wanting to read. Become a true crime junkie or stay up to date with the latest news in pop culture, sports and celebrities. No matter what topic you’re looking for, there’s an option for everyone.

Above all else, remember that a summer road trip is all about having the time of your life. Enjoy every moment, soak up the beauty around you, have the best snacks in the car with Jack Link’s and capture all the magical memories with tons of pictures. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so make it count!

How auto retailers across the country are making wishes come true

2023-08-11T08:01:00

(BPT) – For Elijah, age 6, of Westchester County, New York, life hasn’t been easy since he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. However, a recent surprise has given him and his family a bright spot in an incredibly challenging time in their lives.

Elijah arrived at Bill Kolb Jr. Subaru, thinking he was going to look at cars with his family. But when he walked in, he was surprised by a large group of friends, family and community members with a party to celebrate his wish reveal.

Bill Kolb Jr. Subaru partnered with Make-A-Wish Hudson Valley to host a send-off party in its showroom, featuring an oversized “boarding pass” for Elijah’s first time on an airplane, along with cake, favors and exciting gifts for his upcoming trip to a major theme park in Orlando.

“We know how physically and emotionally difficult medical treatments can be for children and their families,” said Christopher Flood, general manager of Bill Kolb Jr. Subaru. “As a supporter of Make-A-Wish Hudson Valley, we hope to provide local children like Elijah with strength and positivity to fight against a critical illness.”

Changing lives, one wish at a time

According to Make-A-Wish, approximately 27,000 children are diagnosed with a critical illness each year and research shows that granting wishes can improve children’s quality of life and produce better health outcomes. When a wish is granted, it brings lasting impact to wish kids, their loved ones and their community.

Bill Kolb Jr. Subaru is one of a dozen Subaru retailers across the country helping to grant children’s wishes as part of its national “Week of Wishes” initiative to make a lasting impact for wish children, their families and entire communities.

“Subaru and its retailers continue to provide support and exceed expectations for creating life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses nationwide,” said Leslie Motter, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish America. “We are incredibly thankful for our longstanding partnership and look forward to continuing to work together to provide hope to wish kids and their families through initiatives like Week of Wishes, the Subaru Share the Love® Event and more.”

Sharing the love

Elijah is just one inspiring example of the children across the U.S. whose wish has been granted thanks to the partnership between Subaru and Make-A-Wish. Some of this year’s “Week of Wishes” surprises also included:

  • Chloe, age 12, who wished for a “cheer cave” basement makeover. Quality Subaru in Wallingford, Connecticut, hosted a cheer-themed celebration where Chloe, her friends and family got a sneak peek of what her cheer cave will look like when complete.
  • Alejandro, age 13, who wished to go on a shopping spree. He arrived at Garcia Subaru North in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for a red-carpet surprise party before being whisked away in a limo for his shopping adventure at a local mall.
  • Lillian, age 4, who wished to play in the sunshine on St. Johns Island. AutoNation Subaru Hilton Head, in Hardeeville, South Carolina, hosted a beach-themed send-off party to surprise the Bluffton resident.
  • Goel, age 14, who wished for a gaming system. Autobarn Subaru of Countryside in Countryside, Illinois, hosted a gaming-themed bash along with exciting gifts for his brand-new console.

Through the annual Subaru Share the Love Event, more than 600 Subaru retailers across the country have partnered with Make-A-Wish to help support children and families impacted by a critical illness. Since 2011, the automaker and its retailers have helped grant more than 3,300 wishes in the U.S.

Subaru is the largest automotive donor to Make-A-Wish, and this partnership is just one of the many ways the automaker realizes its vision to show love and respect to all people at every interaction. Need help fueling your day? 4 community leaders share their tips

2023-08-10T23:01:00

(BPT) – Community organizations are vital for fostering strong societies, addressing local challenges, providing essential services, driving advocacy and more. Recognizing their significance, Quest recently awarded four nonprofit organizations a total of $80,000 through its second annual Quest for Impact initiative. This program underscores Quest’s commitment to giving back and supporting organizations dedicated to their local communities.

Behind these organizations lie motivated leaders and dedicated staff and volunteers who drive their mission forward. Quest has asked the leaders in each organization what inspires them to stay motivated to reach their goals.

1. How do you stay motivated while working toward your goals?

Keep your eyes on the prize: Chelsea Wood, director of leadership and outcomes at Soccer in the Streets, shared that the kids and her teammates keep her focused. “I am a team player and am so grateful to be surrounded by the greatest teammates who push, challenge and encourage me to strive for excellence and continuous growth.”

Damen Fletcher, founder and CEO of Train of Thought, stays motivated through his passion for the program and embracing it as his life’s purpose. He says, “It’s not a choice. It’s an organic manifestation of my true self.”

Look for support within your environment: Stacy McAlister, founder of 5-Eleven Hoops, likes to meditate and look at his daily notes to remind him of what he’s doing and the lives he’s impacting. He says, “The smile on my kids’ faces after lessons and their progression motivate me daily to keep pushing.”

Similarly, Campbell Lillard, co-founder of DEUCE Community, also believes in creating environments and processes that can help lead to success as he believes no one can stay motivated all the time. He says, “I stay motivated by keeping in mind my purpose, the process and that all roads worth traveling are fraught with more hardships than we could imagine.”

2. What is one tip you would give someone who is starting their journey to reach their goals?

Take care of yourself: When you’re working to build up your community, it’s easy to ignore your own needs. Wood finds that when starting out their journey, many people underestimate the importance of self-care. “You need to take time to come up for air, release the hard work and replenish your tank.”

When you ignore your own needs, it’s easy to burn out, which can negatively affect your job. McAlister recommends preventing burnout by “seeing a therapist, working out 3-5 times a day if possible, maintaining a good diet, resting and taking vacations.”

Be curious and believe: Whether someone is just starting out on their journey as a community leader or they’ve been one for decades, it’s important to keep growing and learning. Lillard says that being curious and maintaining a “white-belt mentality” is key to reaching current and future goals. “If you are always a student, you can always learn and grow. Whatever you are striving toward will force you to grow in capacity, most likely in ways that you cannot predict. Be open to growth and anything is possible.”

As you strive toward your work goals, it can be easy to be discouraged. That’s why Fletcher’s advice is to continue to believe in yourself throughout the journey. “Belief is extremely powerful. The universe will adjust and reshape itself to align with your beliefs.”

How college students can protect themselves financially from fire, theft and crime

2023-08-11T02:01:00

(BPT) – Millions of eager college students across the country are starting a new school year. The excitement is electric on and around campuses, but to help ensure students have a year full of learning and fun, it’s an important time to brush up on student safety.

While primarily a space for education, enrichment and community, college campuses, unfortunately, can also be a place where crimes and other incidents occur. According to Clery Act Reports, an average of over 24,000 crime and safety incidents have been reported annually on college campuses since 2009. These include:

  • 2,411 robberies were reported on average annually
  • 1,840 fires were reported on average annually
  • 20,521 burglaries were reported on average annually

Students living in off-campus housing face a similar situation. No matter where you live, it’s important to be proactive about things like theft, fire and crime so that people of all ages can feel secure while at school.

Theft prevention

Students bring many things to college, including expensive items like laptops, smartphones and bikes. Always be aware of your surroundings and protect your things whenever possible by taking a few simple steps.

For example, consider getting your laptop engraved with your name, use complex passwords and only take it with you when needed. Keep your laptop zipped in a secure bag or backpack that you keep on you or within reach at all times. If you use a bike, always lock it when making stops.

When it comes to your home, it should be your safe space. Whether you live on or near campus, get into the habit of locking your door. If you have a room, consider a lock on your private space as well. Some students even have small safes for valuables.

Fire safety

Fires can occur on and off campus in dorms, fraternities, sororities and elsewhere. Fires pose a risk to your health and safety and can damage or destroy your personal items.

To lower your risk for fires, first check that fire alarms are in all living spaces and in working order. Next, know your fire escape plan for where you live, noting two different ways out. Finally, talk with roommates and others in the building about the importance of fire safety and basic steps like double checking stoves and hotplates are off and not putting flammable items too close to lamps.

Renters insurance

While being proactive and prioritizing safety can make a big difference, crimes and other incidents can still happen. Most colleges do not cover the cost of stolen or damaged student property. Even if the event was not the student’s fault (like a burglary or burst pipe that caused water damage), the student would likely be on their own to cover the financial cost.

“Families are smart to consider if they can afford to replace everything if it is stolen or damaged. For many students, the answer is no, not to mention the disruption to the entire college experience. Among rising college costs, many families would feel the sting of replacing a $1,500 laptop or $500 bicycle,” said John Fees, cofounder of GradGuard, whose insurance programs have protected more than 1.3 million students since its founding in 2009.

GradGuard’s College Renters Insurance contains an exclusive student endorsement that provides worldwide property coverage, liability protection, a low $100 deductible and no credit check. They work with hundreds of colleges and universities to offer affordable rates for coverage that start at jut $11 a month. So, whether you’re studying abroad or visiting home for winter break, you can rest easy knowing your belongings are covered. Learn more at GradGuard.com.

As energies run high on college campuses nationwide, it’s important also to be mindful of safety and security. These simple steps can help ensure students stay well so they can focus on their studies, personal growth and making cherished lifelong memories.

Activating Hope: Immunotherapy May Change the Fight Against Colorectal Cancer

2023-08-10T08:01:00

(BPT) – Colorectal cancer (CRC) has become an epidemic that demands our attention.

Every day, Americans of all ages and walks of life receive a diagnosis of CRC. Unfortunately, this reality upends every aspect of life for both patients and their loved ones, sending them on an urgent quest for answers and for effective treatment options.

CRC is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States in men and women combined. Diagnoses of CRC are on the rise in younger Americans, and it is now the leading cause of cancer death in men under 50. By 2023, it’s projected to be the leading cause of cancer deaths in all people under 50. Without early screening, CRC can remain undetected until the disease is advanced, leaving patients with limited to no curative treatment options. People living with CRC face numerous challenges throughout their journey, navigating the complex healthcare system, managing the financial burden of treatment, and overcoming the physical and emotional toll.

The oncology community has been listening — and working to bring hope to this crisis. Decades of research have revealed that the most potent tools to fight cancer are within our own bodies, waiting to be unleashed. This approach is called immunotherapy. Immunotherapy drugs are designed to harness the body’s natural immune system to attack and eliminate cancer cells. These therapies activate the body to win the battle against cancer.

Since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s approval of the first immunotherapy for use in melanoma in 2011, this approach has successfully expanded into a wide range of cancers and opened the door to a new generation of cancer therapies.

Dr. Steven O’Day, Chief Medical Officer at Agenus, was part of the team of melanoma researchers that pioneered the immuno-oncology revolution.

“I have witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of immunotherapy in cancer treatment,” Dr. O’Day says. “Currently, there is a concerning rise in colorectal cancer among young adults, highlighting the urgent need for improved treatment options. I firmly believe that novel immunotherapies have the potential to address this pressing issue.”

This revolutionary approach is changing the way many cancers are treated — a breakthrough that is desperately needed, particularly in advanced-stage CRC.

Clinical trials play a crucial role in the development of new treatments, including novel immunotherapies. These studies provide patients the opportunity to access innovative treatments and high-quality care, while contributing to the advancement of medical science. Clinical trials are designed to improve patient care and establish more effective therapeutic options.

Agenus is committed to patients and understands the urgent need in the CRC community. Together with physicians, patients, caregivers and advocates across the globe, Agenus has activated a mission to improve the lives of those affected by this disease. The company has launched an ongoing clinical trial of its novel immunotherapy for eligible patients with advanced CRC.
