Driving Toward Sustainability: 3 Considerations for Sustainable Tires

2024-06-13T12:05:00

(BPT) – In today’s world, environmental consciousness is a driving force behind consumer purchase decisions for everyday items like clothing, housewares and even tires. With sustainability on the minds of drivers — many considering EVs or hybrid vehicles to reduce their carbon footprint — Hankook Tire recently explored drivers’ preferences when shopping for tires that are also good for the planet. Here’s where the rubber meets the road when it comes to eco-friendly tires:

The Road to Sustainable Practices

According to the latest Gauge Index survey, nearly two-thirds of drivers (64%) are likely to purchase tires from a brand known for its sustainability practices. What’s more, nearly half (47%) are willing to pay a premium for tires that are sustainably made.

Generational differences also play a significant role in these preferences, and younger people are driving the demand: 71% of Gen Z respondents are more likely to purchase tires from a brand known for its sustainability practices, compared to 53% of Boomers. Additionally, 58% of Gen Z respondents, compared to 33% of Boomers, stated that it is important for the tires they purchase to be made from recycled or sustainable materials.

Materials Matter

When it comes to the materials used in their tires, 44% of drivers said it was important that their tires were made from recycled or sustainable materials. Of those, over half (58%) were Gen Z compared to 33% of Boomers. Additionally, when considering purchasing sustainable tires, durability matters. The lifespan of the tire led as the most important at 24%, followed by safety ratings (19%), and performance ratings (16%).

Embracing Repurposing

As consumers become more conscious of sustainability, there is also a growing interest in what becomes of tires at the “end of the road” — in other words, what happens when the tire needs to be replaced and how it can be repurposed. Nearly one-quarter (23%) are interested in repurposing used tires for footwear, closely followed by 17% of consumers who would like to see more tires used for garden planters.

This trend extends to educational programs as well. Schools are incorporating used tires into their gardening programs, turning them into planters for various crops. Gardens built at local schools and community centers not only repurpose tires (and keep them out of landfills) but also provide hands-on learning experiences for students. These initiatives help children learn about agriculture, sustainability, and the importance of recycling.

As consumer preferences continue to evolve, drivers are seeking out automotive suppliers that prioritize eco-friendly products and practices that align with their own values. By prioritizing sustainability initiatives, these suppliers not only contribute to a cleaner environment, but also cater to the changing needs and preferences of their customers.

Scouting America instills values, traditions and skills

2024-06-13T08:55:00

(BPT) – After 114 years, the Boy Scouts of America has changed its name. More than five years after welcoming girls, it has become Scouting America, a name that is more welcoming to anyone who wants to join. Nobody is happier about it than Bob Brady, Scoutmaster of Troop 1150 in Sparta and the Executive Vice President of Patriots’ Path Council. He said the name change is reflective of what Scouting is all about.

“The name change reflects what our Oath has always been,” said Brady. “We want everyone involved. Everyone is welcome. We’re better with you than without you.”

Brady’s own family knows a bit about that. When Brady was a kid, being a Boy Scout was at the center of his world. He had moved with his family to a new part of the country and was short on friends and activities. Joining Scouts was a pivotal turning point in his young life.

“Scouting was everything to me,” said Brady. “I earned Eagle at 15 and stayed involved. I did everything you can do in Scouting and loved every minute of it.”

Scouting didn’t just teach Brady how to pitch a tent and survive in the forest. It taught him leadership, public speaking, and the values that are central to who he is as a person. It even pointed the way to his career.

“I’m a lawyer,” he explained. “But there were no lawyers in my family. I had never even thought about becoming a lawyer until I took a law merit badge in Scouting when I was 17 years old. That merit badge changed the course of my life. I don’t know where I would be without it. Those merit badges help Scouts figure out who they are.”

Brady’s involvement in Scouting diminished over the years, primarily because of the birth of his daughters. He was a bit wistful about the fact he couldn’t share what was such an important part of his own growing-up years with his girls. At the time of their birth, Boy Scouts of America had yet to accept women into its ranks.

All of that changed in 2018, when the organization began admitting girls. Coincidentally enough, the announcement came on his daughter’s 10th birthday.

“I teared up, because I realized that I could now share the program that had meant everything to me growing up with my girls.”

Brady sprang into action right away to see how he could help. He formed a girls-only troop, 13 Scouts of which went on to achieve the highest rank in Scouting, Eagle Scout. Two of that group of 13? His own daughters.

This Father’s Day, Brady is reflective of what it all means, not just to his own family, but to Americans as a whole. It’s about raising good kids — the most important work any parent can do.

“The values we instill in kids in this program — this is exactly what we want good citizens to be,” Brady said. “If everyone went through Scouting, imagine the society we could have. It is the single most important youth program you can offer to your kids. It’s going to change their lives.”

5 great tips for hosting your summer golden hour gathering

2024-06-12T08:01:00

(BPT) – Summer is the season for spending your nights outdoors, whether by a cozy bonfire, in the backyard with a movie projector, or gathered around the porch table with family and friends. With a little forethought and some planning, your golden hour party can extend into the night and be the hit of the season. Here are five ideas for making your sunset soiree sensational.

1. Plan ahead. Summer calendars fill up fast. Get those invites out early so you can make sure your family and friends can attend. Bonus tip: Make it a weeknight! Summer is a great time to linger in the backyard during golden hour and beyond, so giving people something fabulous to do on a day they might not usually take advantage of is always a treat. By opting against a weekend night, your guests are more likely to be available.

2. Amp up the dinner party. To give your guests a more thoughtful experience, transform your outdoor dining area with a seasonal tablescape, unique lighting and even a themed menu. You can add a magical feel to the evening by draping strands of lights in the trees and along your fence. Many backyard lights are even solar-powered, so they’ll flicker on in time for golden hour and add a fairy-like glow to your gathering. And about that menu … setting up your meal as a “station” where people can serve themselves, like a salad bar, is an easy way to accommodate food allergies and preferences while still offering a variety of choices.

3. Reclaim the golden hour from mosquitos. Nothing puts a damper on an outdoor party like a swarm of mosquitos descending at golden hour, that period between day and night in which everything just seems to glow with soft light. It’s the most beautiful time of day, but it’s also a peak time for mosquito activity, which causes many people to retreat indoors. In fact, up to 40% of people have even skipped outdoor events to avoid dealing with insects1. Adding OFF!® Clean Feel products to your outdoor routine can help you enjoy sunset and the rest of the night longer. OFF!® Clean Feel aerosols and pump sprays are easy to use and provide long-lasting protection for up to eight hours from mosquitoes. OFF!® Clean Feel Gel is another fragrance-free option perfect for everyday use because it feels good on skin and will help protect you from mosquitoes.

4. Set up entertainment. If you have the space for an after-dinner activity, you can drape a sheet along your fence or house for an easy projector screen. At sundown, transform your space with comfy pillows, a projector, speakers and cables for a perfect at-home movie night.

5. Draw the evening to a close around your firepit. Everyone loves sitting around a cozy firepit on a summer night. Pre-stack your firepit with wood so all you’ll need to do is light it. Add to the fun by stocking up a tray with ingredients for s’mores (including skewers for roasting the marshmallows!), or try using a grated top for your firepit to grill peaches, watermelon or pineapple to serve with ice cream. Bonus tip: Have cozy throws or long-sleeved wraps on hand for your guests who might get chilly.

Take back the golden hour from mosquitos and enjoy these balmy evenings with family and friends. By banishing the bugs, you’ll make the most of summer!

5 tips to help grads start on the right financial footing

2024-06-12T12:19:00

(BPT) – For recent high school and college graduates, these life transitions often bring dramatic change — as well as opportunities to learn and grow. As young adults embark on these milestones, learning how to handle their own finances is key. While a great way to learn these skills is by doing, it pays to have a little help along the way.

To support recent grads navigating their increasing independence, here are tips to help them develop good financial habits as they pursue their educational goals, begin their career, and beyond.

1. Talk it out

One of the best things you can do is be open to having candid conversations about money. As parents, discussing the challenges, accomplished goals and pitfalls of finances with kids who are becoming adults can be hugely impactful. Don’t shy away from sharing your own mistakes, explaining what you learned from them, and letting them see that the financial journey doesn’t come easily to everyone — with or without mistakes. Help them talk through their money decisions and discuss financial goals they want to set.

If you’re a recent grad embarking on your own for the first time, decisions about where to live and how to manage your money can be overwhelming. Don’t be afraid to reach out to parents or other trusted family members who may have advice and guidance to help you navigate these new experiences.

2. Use tools designed for young people

Financial tools and resources, including checking accounts, can help high school students, college students and recent grads manage their money with confidence.

  • Chase High School Checking is an account with tools and resources for students aged 13-17 that is co-owned by the parent to provide oversight and monitoring, with no monthly service fee.
  • Chase College Checking is created for students aged 17-24, giving them the confidence they’ll need to help manage their money independently, again with no monthly service fee up to the graduation date.

Both checking account options can help high school and college students gain financial independence while teaching them how to budget, save and spend wisely. Plus they come with the benefit of having direct deposit, to receive and monitor funds more easily while tracking expenses each month.

3. Consolidate money tools

If you’re just getting started with using online budgeting tools and trackers, it’s tempting to download all of the latest apps to help, but learning how to budget and manage money is easier and more convenient if you do all those things through one app rather than using multiple to keep track of your money.

Chase student checking accounts offer account alerts, the ability to track spending, plus use Zelle® to quickly send and receive funds with friends, among other helpful services — all in one place, the Chase Mobile® app.

4. Track income and spending

Teaching your recent grad how to monitor how much money they’re earning, plus tracking where and how they’re spending, is vital as they begin living more independently. It’s crucial to understand the difference between needs versus wants, some of the basics of budgeting, to help establish these habits early in life and better prepare them for future financial stability.

5. Enjoy today while planning the future

Today’s generation is on-the-go and action-oriented, hoping to leave the world better than they found it. They are often focused on a future they may sometimes doubt. Similarly, much of what you do today is in the hope of a better future. Even steps that may seem small or unimportant truly add up — like saving for an emergency fund or other future financial goals. Staying focused on long-term goals or establishing the routine of healthy habits will make the seeds being planted today lead to growth in the future.

Navigating chronic migraine: One woman’s quest to find the right doctor and preventive treatment

2024-06-11T14:01:00

(BPT) – As a nursing student, Nicole, 32, has a busy yet rewarding life. She works 12-hour hospital shifts as a nursing assistant and spends her free time traveling and playing with her dogs, Bailey and Snoopy. She’s also lived with the invisible, excruciating pain and complexities of migraine disease since she was a child.

Migraine Impact: It’s More Than a Headache

At age 11, Nicole began experiencing pain and sickness, symptoms that she would later learn were that of migraine disease. Unfortunately, Nicole’s path to diagnosis mirrors one many migraine patients experience — years of doctors overlooking her symptoms, delaying her diagnosis and treatment for over a decade — until she finally received a chronic migraine diagnosis in her mid-20s. There are over 150 different classifications of headache disorders and a myriad of associated symptoms, so it is important to seek out a neurologist, who understands the impact migraine can have on someone’s life, when experiencing migraine symptoms.

Becoming empowered and confident in advocating for herself came slowly for Nicole. In her years searching for an effective treatment, Nicole’s migraine disease became more severe and the stress of being a full-time student and part-time employee seemed to increase her vulnerability to migraine attacks. She was no longer able to function at work, spend time with her friends or do any of the other activities she previously enjoyed.

“I went from having the typical life of a young working professional to dealing with debilitating migraine attacks with nausea, vomiting and fatigue,” says Nicole. “I lost friends, my job, and my financial and physical independence.” She tried multiple medications and lifestyle changes to reduce her symptoms, but the migraine attacks persisted.

After unsuccessful treatments, Nicole learned about VYEPTI® (eptinezumab-jjmr), a prescription medicine used for the preventive treatment of migraine in adults, by way of various talks she attended during her advocacy work. She began researching more about the treatment, its clinical trials, and its route of administration — she was intrigued by the intravenous (IV) infusion treatment delivery that’s given by a healthcare professional every 3 months. She wondered if it could be a good fit for her and wanted to try it, so she brought it up with her doctor. They discussed the treatment, its benefits and risks, and based on their clinical judgement, Nicole’s neurologist decided to prescribe it for her.

“I am in a much better place,” said Nicole. “If my migraine wasn’t well managed, my 12-hour shifts in the hospital would feel unbearable.” Since starting preventive treatment on VYEPTI, Nicole is able to spend less time managing her migraine and more time enjoying school, work and life. “I never would have imagined that I could enjoy trips like the one I recently took to Portugal.”

VYEPTI is a calcitonin gene-related peptide antagonist (anti-CGRP) and is the first and only FDA-approved preventive treatment for migraine delivered by IV infusion. In patients with four or more migraine days per month, VYEPTI has been proven to reduce average monthly migraine days over months 1-3 compared to placebo. Individual results may vary.

Do not receive VYEPTI if you are allergic to eptinezumab-jjmr or any of the ingredients in VYEPTI. See additional Important Safety Information for VYEPTI below.

A New Chapter with Migraine Under Control

When Nicole moved from New York to Chicago, she found it difficult to connect with a doctor who did not dismiss her debilitating symptoms. She visited four different doctors but none of them were the right fit for her.

“I didn’t feel heard or respected with some of the doctors,” said Nicole. “One wanted to change the treatment plan that was working for me. And others weren’t comfortable with my medical profile, which is complex and comes with comorbidities.”

Given Nicole’s struggle to feel connected with a new healthcare partner in Chicago, and her happiness with the two-way partnership and treatment experience with her doctor in New York, she chooses to travel from Chicago to New York for her quarterly VYEPTI infusion treatments. Nicole’s New York-based doctor, a migraine and headache specialist, recognizes the disabling nature of the disease, respects what she says about the impact of symptoms on her daily activities, and values her input. This collaborative and supportive partnership is essential to Nicole’s health and well-being.

Nicole wants to share what she’s learned from her migraine experience, and why she thinks it’s important to not give up on finding the right treatment and doctor.

Power of Self Advocacy

When managing your migraine disease, Nicole emphasizes the importance of advocating for yourself.

“If you’re not satisfied with the level of control you have over your migraine symptoms on your current treatment, or aren’t connecting with your doctor, consider making a change. You shouldn’t feel like you’re a burden for asking for better options to meet your treatment goals,” advises Nicole. “It’s important to ask about alternatives to help prevent your migraine attacks, especially if they are affecting your daily life.”

There are resources available to those seeking more information about treatment options, Nicole notes. Migraine organizations, such as National Headache Foundation and American Migraine Foundation, serve as valuable community resources helping to educate patients, healthcare professionals and the public on migraine and headache disorder symptoms, advocacy efforts, support for treatment research, and offer tools to locate a headache specialist. While there is a higher concentration of specialists in larger cities, many of which are in high demand, the emergence of telehealth is helping to expand access to specialists for people not located near these city hubs.

Another key part of managing migraine is prioritizing a positive and supportive partnership with your doctor. Nicole urges people living with migraine to ask the following questions when meeting with a/their doctor:

  • Can I communicate with you outside of appointments?
  • How easy will it be for me to get an appointment in the event of an emergency?
  • What treatment options could help me better manage my symptoms so I can continue doing things I enjoy?
  • Are there alternative options I have not tried yet that can help me manage my migraine disease with my comorbidities?
  • Are there any new advancements in migraine and headache treatments?

Nicole wants others to feel inspired by her experiences. She encourages everyone with migraine to speak up, especially if they feel they are still highly impacted by migraine or if they are not feeling heard by their doctor. “You can still do a lot with migraine and all the symptoms. Sure, you can have horrible days. We all have horrible days. But there’s always hope with preventive treatment to have more good days. Now there are some days when I completely forget I have migraine, and those are the best days of all.”

Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia: Navigating a Rare, Lifelong Condition Often Diagnosed at Birth

2024-06-11T14:57:00

(BPT) – This article was sponsored and developed by Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc.

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is a rare, lifelong genetic condition involving the adrenal glands that is estimated to affect up to approximately 30,000 people in the United States. June is CAH Awareness Month, which aims to recognize individuals and their families impacted by the condition.

People living with CAH have very little, if any, of a particular enzyme (21-hydroxylase) that the body needs to change cholesterol into two essential hormones (cortisol and aldosterone) that regulate important body processes. Without this enzyme, the building blocks for cortisol and aldosterone pile up and instead are used to make too many androgens. Androgens, which are also hormones, contribute to growth, puberty and reproduction.

Treatment options for CAH are limited and have not changed in over 70 years. Glucocorticoids (GCs) remain the only treatment for both low levels of cortisol and to help manage the overproduction of adrenal androgens. Mineralocorticoids are also used to treat aldosterone insufficiency. Long-term exposure to high adrenal androgen levels can cause shorter adult height, excessive hair growth and menstrual irregularity in females, infertility in females and males and may have a negative mental and emotional impact. GCs are effective at replacing the missing cortisol but higher doses are needed to reduce the production of adrenal androgens. However, high doses of GCs come with drawbacks, including serious short-term and long-term side effects, such as weight gain, osteoporosis and changes in mood and memory.

“As I’ve gotten older and had other health issues unrelated to CAH, steroids have often come up as a potential thing to be aware of, and I’ve gotten somewhat more concerned about the potential toll that steroids can take on the body,” Audrey, a person living with CAH, stated.

Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc. recently launched WHAT THE C@H?!, a new educational initiative that aims to close the gap in the need for helpful information about CAH and acknowledges the frustrations and challenges experienced by the community in managing the condition. The effort includes a dedicated website, WhatTheCAH.com, that offers educational information to help individuals living with CAH and their families navigate their journeys. It also offers the community a space to share their CAH stories with others. Through a form on the website, people can submit their WHAT THE C@H?! moment, a challenging experience of living with or managing the condition.

“I wish people understood that CAH is not something that anyone would choose to have and it’s not something that there is currently a cure for. So, patients are forced to learn how to manage it the best they can. There really are not many resources available to help you through that process and you find resources the best you can. You hopefully find a care team that will support you in that. There are really big emotional costs that come with worrying about your health all of the time,” said Audrey.

6 tips on how to find, apply for and get scholarships for college

2024-06-11T07:01:00

(BPT) – According to the Education Data Initiative, the average cost of college in 2023 is $36,436 per year. Even if you or your parents can afford to pay the full costs, that’s still a hefty sum. Scholarships can help cover the costs of college, from tuition and books to living expenses.

From community organizations and major corporations to military branches or your school itself, make a list of which types of scholarships are most of interest to you. Here are some common types of scholarships available:

  • Merit-based. Merit-based scholarships are awarded based on academic achievements. This includes criteria like GPA, standardized test scores or outstanding talents. Merit scholarships are designed to reward excellence, without consideration for financial need.
  • Need-based. These scholarships are determined by a student’s ability to pay for their education. Low-income students may be eligible for additional grants.
  • Minority scholarships. Minority scholarships support underrepresented groups in higher education. These scholarships may award money to racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+ students and individuals with disabilities.
  • Subject-specific. These scholarships are for students pursuing specific fields of study, such as STEM or the humanities.
  • Community service. Community service scholarships recognize a student’s commitment to community service and volunteering.
  • Athletic. Athletes who excel in sports like football and basketball may receive an athletic scholarship. Colleges and universities may offer them to recruit athletes for their teams.
  • Creative and artistic. Students with exceptional creative talents may be eligible for these scholarships.
  • International. If you’re moving to the United States for higher education, apply for international scholarships. They might be merit-based, need-based or otherwise specific to international students.
  • Career-specific. Some scholarships are tailored to specific careers or industries. They may require recipients to commit to working in that field after graduation.
  • Entrepreneurial. These awards support students with innovative business ideas or entrepreneurial ambitions.
  • First-generation. If you’re the first in your family to attend college, you might qualify for this type of scholarship. They’re designed to bridge financial and educational gaps for first-generation students.
  • Study abroad. Study abroad scholarships are for students interested in studying in foreign countries for a semester or more.
  • Military. Active Duty military personnel, Veterans and their dependents may qualify for certain scholarships through the branches of the military.

From there, here are a few tips to maximize your scholarship opportunities.

  1. Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. This helps determine your eligibility for federal financial assistance. Even if you’re not eligible for student aid, apply anyway. Many states and scholarship programs use FAFSA information to evaluate applications.
  2. Look for local opportunities. Check with your high school’s guidance counselor. Then, inquire with community organizations and local businesses.
  3. Sign up for national scholarship database websites. These websites collect information on a wide range of scholarship opportunities. Take time to create a comprehensive student profile. List your academic achievements, extracurricular activities, interests and career goals. Scholarship databases will try to match you with opportunities based on this information.
  4. Research scholarships at each university or college before you apply. Some schools will automatically consider you for certain scholarships, while others may require you to apply. Contact each school’s financial aid office to ask about opportunities.
  5. Start early. Keep track of the application deadlines, requirements and materials for each scholarship.
  6. Ask your peers, family, mentors or guidance counselors for advice. They may provide recommendations or be available to review essays.

Lower home cooling bills: Six tips for savings this summer

2024-06-11T00:01:00

(BPT) – The YORK® brand of Johnson Controls, the global leader for smart, healthy and sustainable buildings, has compiled six proven tips to help homeowners reduce cooling bills this spring and summer as energy costs nationwide remain above pre-pandemic rates.

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that home cooling accounts for 12% of the average household’s monthly electric bills. As many homeowners experience higher-than-average utility costs, simple HVAC upgrades and routine maintenance can help reduce cooling expenditures by improving system efficiency. Before setting the thermostat to cool, homeowners should try these cost-saving tips:

  1. Replace Filters and Clean Vents: HVAC filters help keep dust and debris from being recirculated throughout a home. However, when these filters become too full, they can limit airflow and cause the blower to work harder. Maintaining a filter replacement routine can help improve efficiency and extend the life of the HVAC system. For most systems, the recommendation is to replace the filter every one to three months, but homeowners should follow the frequency indicated by the HVAC system manufacturer. Routinely cleaning the grates of the air vents will also help to maintain efficient airflow.
  2. Schedule Preventative Maintenance: The Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA) estimates that routine HVAC maintenance can reduce annual heating and cooling bills by as much as 30%. Routine maintenance involves cleaning and inspecting the evaporator coil, examining the drain pan and condensation line, evaluating blowers and fans, testing system controls and checking refrigerant levels. Establishing a routine of scheduled service prior to the hottest and coldest times of the year — when HVAC systems are used most — will ensure equipment is in peak working condition and can even help to reduce costly repairs over time.
  3. Cover Windows: The Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that as much as 76% of the sunlight that hits a standard, double-pane window will transfer as heat into the home. Window coverings of nearly any nature will help to reduce solar heat gains, especially when installed in south-facing rooms or homes with little to no exterior shade. But for the greatest energy reduction, homeowners should opt for insulated cellular shades certified by the Attachments Energy Rating Council (AERC). These specially designed shades incorporate an interior layer of insulation and can reduce solar heat that enters through the windows by as much as 60%.
  4. Inspect and Seal Ductwork: EnergyStar estimates that as much as 20% of HVAC efficiency is lost to poorly connected or damaged ductwork. An HVAC technician can inspect the ductwork throughout a home and evaluate the system’s air supply and return balance. Airflow imbalances could be a sign of damage, loose seals or even that the ductwork isn’t sized correctly. Ductwork located within basements, attics or crawl spaces can also be a point of efficiency loss if the ductwork isn’t properly insulated.
  5. Update the Thermostat: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that the average homeowner could reduce their annual heating and cooling bills by as much as 10% by using a programmable thermostat to reduce HVAC demands overnight or while away from the home. Some smart thermostats incorporate geo-fencing features to further reduce energy use by detecting homeowners’ proximity to the house and adjusting the temperature based on home and away settings. Some thermostats can even alert homeowners to potential system issues and provide the option to grant their HVAC contractor with remote service access.
  6. Utilize Inflation Reduction Act Savings: With higher-efficiency HVAC equipment from YORK®, homeowners can reduce their heating and cooling costs by as much as 50% compared to low-efficiency systems, helping homeowners see a reduction in their energy bills while lowering their environmental impact. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) has made the transition to high-efficiency systems, including heat pumps, even more affordable by offering tax rebates up to $2,000 dependent on household income. IRA incentives can also be combined with local and manufacturers rebates to further increase cost-savings. Since heat pumps are powered by electricity and operate by transferring heat rather than producing it, heat pumps can reduce site energy use by as much as two-thirds when compared to conventional, fuel-powered heating systems.

For more information on rebates, visit YORK.com.

Amazon is Building the Future of Pharmacy: A Guide to Affordable, Convenient Care

2024-06-10T16:03:00

(BPT) – In the U.S., more than 131 million people (about 66% of adults) use prescription medications to maintain their health and well-being. However, these customers can face significant difficulties accessing and affording their medication. From waiting for hours in line at the pharmacy to questions of privacy to surprise costs, the traditional pharmacy model is not built with customers in mind. These barriers can make accessing potentially life-saving medication difficult, if not impossible, for some patients.

Rethinking the pharmacy experience

Why is getting prescription medication so difficult? Traditional pharmacies have remained largely unchanged for decades, not adapting to modern customer needs. This has led to pain points that include reduced hours, fewer pharmacists, and inflated prices, which worsen the pharmacy experience.

Luckily, new innovations are changing the prescription drug landscape for the better, making accessing medication simpler and more affordable. Like Amazon.com, Amazon Pharmacy is focused on creating new convenience, value, and selection for customers. Using tools like AI, machine learning, and micro-mobility, Amazon Pharmacy provides consumers with upfront pricing estimates, fast home delivery when they need it, and 24/7 access to pharmacists.

Using Amazon Pharmacy is like having a full-service pharmacy right in your pocket. The online store carries most medications prescribed at the doctor’s office and delivers them free to your front door. The company’s model builds on the concept of mail-order pharmacies, which are generally associated with lower health care costs and improved medication adherence. However, mail-order delivery can take up to two weeks. When you use Amazon Pharmacy, you’ll experience all the benefits of mail order, which typically include lower prices and higher medication adherence, plus even faster delivery.

Continuous innovation

Since its launch in 2020, Amazon Pharmacy has continued to improve the pharmacy experience.

Just last year, the company launched a series of new programs to add value and convenience to customers’ lives. One key initiative is RxPass, which allows Prime members to access unlimited eligible prescription medications for only $5 per month, including free shipping. With over 75 million Americans taking one of the eligible medications, chances are one or more of your medications is included.

Amazon Pharmacy is also automating savings from manufacturer-sponsored coupons. Eligible coupons don’t require customers to download a form, call a manufacturer, or search the fine print. If you’re eligible, coupons will be directly applied at checkout, allowing customers to save time and money. To date, automatic coupons on Amazon Pharmacy have already helped customers save over $15 million.

Amazon is also supporting savings at more than 60,000 participating pharmacies nationwide, including Amazon Pharmacy through the Prime prescription savings benefit. Prime members can receive discounts up to 80% off generic and 40% off brand-name medications at a wide range of locations.

Finally, customers in need of fast treatment can have their medications delivered to their door in hours, not days — via drone in College Station or same-day delivery in Austin, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Phoenix, and Seattle. Amazon Pharmacy delivers to every zip code in the US, and can ship directly to your door.

Fostering Resilience, Reaping Rewards: DeVry’s Class of 2024

(BPT) – Across the U.S., higher education is in flux. This can make focusing on education and the future feel overwhelming for many students. But for DeVry University’s students, who often balance classes with careers, families and other personal obligations, successfully meeting challenges is familiar territory. This year’s graduating class, like those before them, has demonstrated and embodied the resilience fostered and supported by the institution.

“DeVry and Keller made it possible to continue my career and education simultaneously,” said Ebony Lawal, a DeVry graduate and now a graduate from the Keller School of Management’s MBA program. “The most memorable part of my journey has been the support of my adviser, who kept me going through difficult times and helped me to find a career path that matches my goals.”

On Sunday, June 9, in Rosemont, Illinois, more than 2,000 students crossed the stage during commencement ceremonies for DeVry University and its Keller Graduate School of Management in celebration of their accomplishments and ability to thrive in the face of difficulties.

“I am exceptionally proud of our graduates for reaching this significant milestone. This achievement is a testament to their hard work, determination and perseverance,” added Elise Awwad, president and CEO of DeVry University. “The challenges in today’s world are immense, but as graduates of DeVry University, they have the skills to take on those challenges and make impactful contributions to their workplaces and communities.”

Tech visionary and proud alumna emphasizes Belief in the Possible

This year’s commencement keynote speaker, Edwige A. Robinson — DeVry and Keller alum — knows the challenges and rewards of higher education. For her, education allowed her to bet on herself and open new doors. She exemplifies the grit, determination and self-belief cultivated at DeVry.

When speaking to this year’s graduates, Robinson emphasized betting on yourself. “When you think about it, a new manager or company will bet on you by just looking at your resume and hiring you. So, if a stranger can bet on you, why can’t you bet on yourself?” she pointed out.

Robinson’s educational journey began in Cote d’Ivoire, West Africa. She eventually immigrated to the U.S., learned English and quickly found a passion for technology. She is a trailblazing senior executive in strategy and innovation and is a member of the Forbes Technology Council. Robinson is passionate about mentorship, regularly sharing her insights and experience with young girls and women through several organizations and entities, including DeVry’s Women+Tech Scholars Program.

“I believe that achieving a goal, dream or aspiration begins in one’s mind, an inner work where you first envision overcoming all possible obstacles,” she explained. “And that belief inside of yourself serves as a kind of seed planting and germination for your dream to grow.”

Resiliency in action

Every commencement ceremony celebrates student achievement. But the celebration is even more profound when students overcome obstacles to achieve an education.

DeVry’s commencement ceremonies cap off a two-day Commencement Weekend. On Saturday, June 8, the university hosted DeVry Day, a career planning and alumni networking event to help graduates further prepare for what’s next. Alumni participation fosters community and shows graduates how far an education can take them.

“Education, undeniably, remains an influential force with timeless significance. Once an individual attains an educational milestone, it becomes an enduring possession,” said Awwad. “However, our commitment to our students doesn’t end at commencement. Our mission remains the same — to help learners at any stage of their journey create thriving careers in an economy transformed by technology,” she concluded.
