Helping Wishes take flight: How one pilot made a difference

2024-07-18T23:01:00

(BPT) – When American Airlines Captain Matthew Asdel’s son was diagnosed with cancer 20 years ago, Make-A-Wish® made it possible for him to go on a Disney cruise. His son, now 24, is working on becoming a pilot and hopes to join American Airlines one day.

Decades later, his 8-year-old granddaughter was also diagnosed with cancer and Make-A-Wish hosted a princess party for her. To show his appreciation for a cause near and dear to his heart, Asdel used his 32 years of experience as an American Airlines pilot to become a WishMaker®.

An attitude of gratitude

Asdel is no stranger to giving back to the community. Every week, he volunteers to network, mentor and support kids from different socioeconomic backgrounds in Dallas-Fort Worth.

However, Asdel recently had the opportunity to give back to Make-A-Wish by piloting the Wish Flight. He and the entire American Airlines flight crew donated their time to a charter flight from Dallas-Fort Worth to Orlando, Florida, helping 27 wish families join a one-of-a-kind flight experience to fulfill their wish to go to Walt Disney World® Resort.

“It was such a wonderful opportunity to give back to this organization, which has blessed my family so much,” said Asdel. “It was like coming back full circle.”

Like many WishMakers, Asdel understands firsthand how these wishes can transform the lives of children facing critical illnesses and also give their families a way to smile again, given his experience with his son’s cancer.

“I’ve been there. I know how much they’ve been through,” he said. “Not just the patient, of course, but also the siblings that go through so much and the parents trying to juggle family and hospital visits all at the same time. It takes a lot to make it this far, and it’s just a huge victory for all of them.”

How Wish Flight helps transform lives

The flight Asdel piloted was a special collaboration between American Airlines, Make-A-Wish and Disney to celebrate World Wish Month™. Wish Flight was full of unforgettable experiences, beginning with a preflight celebration at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, complete with a breakfast bar and a special send-off by WishMakers who make wishes possible.

Once they arrived in Orlando, the Wish Flight team enjoyed a welcome reception at Give Kids The World Village, a whimsical nonprofit resort, where the wish kids and their families stayed for six days and five nights as part of their wish trip.

These wishes wouldn’t be possible without the help of WishMakers like Asdel. From individual donors to corporate partners like American Airlines, WishMakers are everywhere.

Because of WishMakers, Make-A-Wish has granted more than 585,000 wishes to children worldwide, but it needs more to ensure that every eligible child receives their wish.

You don’t have to be a pilot to help this cause. Anyone can be a WishMaker, and there are countless ways to donate your time, talent or treasure.

Want to make wishes come true? Make-A-Wish and American invite you to make a difference in the lives of wish kids. To learn how to make wishes come true and become a WishMaker, visit Wish.org.

Ready for school? Here’s your ultimate back-to-school toolkit

2024-07-18T14:01:00

(BPT) – No matter how old your child is, the back-to-school transition is always exciting, busy and sometimes stressful. Moving from less scheduled summer days to a regular routine takes planning, as well as the best available tools.

To ease your family’s transition, here are some useful tips and tricks to have in your toolkit from Five Star®, makers of school supplies built to last all year long, including notebooks, folders, academic planners and the Five Star Study App to help your child get back into the school groove.

Evaluate daily schedules

Look back at last year to remember what was successful — and less effective — about your previous routine, so you can make improvements heading into the new school year.

Were mornings always rushed? Build a cushion of time each day by getting everyone up 15-20 minutes earlier. Consider adjusting bedtimes so your kids will not be sacrificing too much of their much-needed sleep. You could also make time every evening to set out tomorrow’s clothes, pack lunches and fill backpacks to save time each morning. As your kids grow older, they may be ready to take on one of these responsibilities themselves.

Did you have too many activities after school, making it harder to get schoolwork done? Limit these activities, perhaps establishing a day or two that are always left open for a bit of breathing room during the week.

Use the best tech tools to aid schoolwork

Technology is a regular part of students’ school days at younger ages, providing opportunity to utilize digital tools to enhance study habits and simplify homework organization.

In time for back-to-school, Five Star has expanded the compatibility of their free study app to pair with Five Star wide ruled notebooks, composition books and filler paper, making it ideal for younger students. This means students in their first days of kindergarten, all the way through college graduation, can benefit from combining paper learning with digital tools to enhance their academic experience.

Handwritten notes are generally accepted as helpful to improve retention, and the Five Star Study App makes it easier for students to take their handwritten notes from Five Star compatible notetaking products and instantly create digital flashcards to study anywhere, anytime. This helps your students organize — and avoid losing — important information on handouts from their classes, making them easily accessible anytime, so they can study during the drive to school, while waiting for siblings at after-school activities and more.

Download the free Five Star Study App in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, and learn more at FiveStarBuiltStrong.com.

Discover the best study times

Every child (and family) is different, so experiment with times and places that are best for your child to complete schoolwork. Consider dividing assignments, working on their toughest subjects when they’re at their sharpest and saving less challenging schoolwork for times of day when they seem more distracted.

If your child is a morning person, set aside study time while you’re getting breakfast ready. If they’re hungry and tired right after school, save homework for after they’ve had a snack or meal. Fortunately, the Five Star Study App opens up more possibilities for studying anytime, even when you’re on the go.

Teach children how to plan

Establish a calendar (on paper or digital, whatever works best for your child) to track school events, assignments and tests. Encourage your child to review their calendar each week or whenever their teachers provide information about upcoming assignments, making sure the most important or time-consuming tasks stand out visually.

For major projects, show your child how to divide them into smaller steps to avoid last-minute panic the day before they’re due — and put those steps on the calendar, too. An academic planner like the Five Star Student Planner can help keep track of these smaller steps and with its Study App compatibility provides the best of paper and digital organization.

Helping kids learn to plan ahead and break up larger assignments into more manageable chunks are valuable techniques that will carry them through many years of their educational journey.

Do a dress rehearsal

Especially for younger children, transitions can be stressful. Explain how your routine will change, and do some practice runs by starting the new schedule a few days ahead. This will give everyone (yourself included!) a chance to adjust.

No matter what the school year ahead will bring, taking time to get ready now, and using the best tools available, will help everyone have a more fun, fulfilling and successful year ahead.

5 simple steps to transform your bathroom into a summer spa-like sanctuary

2024-07-18T11:25:00

(BPT) – When faced with long, activity-filled summer days, do you find yourself retreating to the bathroom to get some peace and breathing room away from the kids, roommates and the stress of daily life? Everyone can relate to that. Your bathroom is your refuge, so why not give it some love and create a space where you can truly enjoy the luxury of a moment alone? With just a few upgrades, you can create a personal space to indulge your senses, escape the world’s stresses and turn your bathroom into a wellness sanctuary.

Here’s some inspiration for you to level up your bathroom with personal touches that pamper you and transform your bathroom into the ultimate private escape, from the bathroom experts at TOTO.

Add a bidet seat. Bidets are one of the hottest home improvement trends of the year and you don’t have to add an extra appliance to your bathroom to get the experience. The TOTO WASHLET is a bidet seat that takes less than 30 minutes to install (seriously, it’s totally DIY) and simply attaches to your toilet, replacing your existing toilet seat and transforming your everyday routine into a relaxing spa-like experience. With a heated seat, warm, aerated water for cleansing and a customizable warm-air dryer, it offers a more refreshing, comfortable and cleaner experience than using toilet paper while sitting on a cold toilet seat. TOTO WASHLETS are also available at a range of price points and feature sets so every homeowner or renter can create their perfect bathroom retreat within their desired budget. This includes the new WASHLET S7A, which offers the very latest in TOTO’s technology and design.

Splurge on luxurious towels and robes. When’s the last time you upgraded yours? Plush, fluffy towels and robes are a must in a good spa — why not in your own bathroom? And don’t forget about installing a towel warmer! Even in the summer, getting out of the shower or bath can be jarring. A heated towel is a simple way to elevate the everyday experience with a touch of indulgence.

Swap out your showerhead. If your shower feels more like a fire hose, it’s time to make a change. A rainfall showerhead creates a gentle, even flow of water that simulates rainfall. It’s a soothing way to start or end the day. TOTO’s Modern Series Aero Rain Shower 12″ provides a luxurious shower experience thanks to Aero-Jet™ Technology, which injects air into each droplet of water.

Create a calming environment. Bring in natural elements like wood, stone, bamboo and even greenery to add a grounding sense of tranquility to your bathroom — just what you want after a long day. Be sure to clear countertops of clutter like makeup, lotions, razors and toothbrushes, which can be mentally overstimulating and negatively impact your mood. Reduce visual clutter with hidden storage. Vanities with ample space and drawers, recessed cabinets, and even niches in the shower can help to create a seamlessly blended design.

Consider a soaking tub. Soaking tubs are a huge bathroom trend due to their therapeutic benefits, which include relieving irritated skin, improving blood circulation, relaxing tense muscles and reducing stress and anxiety. But wedging yourself into a tiny tub not deep enough to cover you is not exactly a spa-like experience. If you’re a bath person, investing in a luxurious tub could be an indulgent and appreciated way to level up your bathroom oasis. This may involve a professional remodel to replace your existing tub for a deeper, longer claw-foot tub or soaking tub like TOTO’s Aimes Soaking Tub. Enhance your soak with luxuriously scented candles, soothing bath salts or a bath bomb.

With these simple ideas, you can create the perfect oasis for when you just need an escape this summer.

5 Things You Need to Know About Fatty Liver Disease

2024-07-18T08:01:00

(BPT) – For nearly 25% of Americans living with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, a more serious condition is silently progressing. Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH, is a dangerous form of fatty liver disease that occurs when the fat in the liver becomes toxic. If left unmanaged, NASH can cause severe liver damage. In fact, it’s reported that NASH could soon become the top driver of liver transplants in the United States; it is already the leading cause of liver transplants among women.

Despite the serious consequences of the disease, 90% of people living with NASH don’t know they have it — and most of those who do are not aware of their risk for progression because accurate information about the disease can be hard to find. If you’ve been told you have a fatty liver, you could have NASH and not know it, so it is important to learn about your risk before dangerous liver damage occurs. Make sure to consult your doctor to determine the best course of action for your health and keep reading below for five key facts about NASH.

#1 – NASH can cause scarring of the liver

Fatty liver disease happens in stages. If undetected and unmanaged for too long, the fat can become toxic, killing liver cells, and causing inflammation and scarring (fibrosis). The more scarring you have, the greater your risk of serious health issues like cirrhosis, liver cancer, and the need for a liver transplant. Uncontrolled NASH can also shorten your life expectancy. However, most people living with NASH don’t experience symptoms, even as liver damage is occurring. That’s why, to manage NASH, testing is key.

The progression of liver cancer

#2 – NASH is also known as MASH

As the names state, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are caused by the abnormal buildup of fat in your liver — not by alcohol use. In 2023, medical societies and global liver disease patient groups came together to rename the disease, with the goal of establishing an affirmative, non-stigmatizing name and diagnosis. Today, NASH is now also known as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, or MASH.

#3 – NASH can be a silent disease — don’t wait to get tested

Because the symptoms of NASH can often go unnoticed, getting tested is a critical step to understanding the stage of the condition. The diagnosis process may not require a biopsy — instead, there are multiple noninvasive options to measure and monitor NASH, including blood-based tests, imaging, and scanning. If you do have NASH, your doctor should conduct regular monitoring to check if your liver has developed scarring. To understand more about this process, and the questions you can ask at your next appointment, download this doctor discussion guide.

#4 – NASH can impact more than just your liver

Learning that you have a chronic condition can be challenging in several ways, as navigating life with NASH goes beyond managing physical health. Studies show that it also impacts emotional wellbeing, daily activities, and personal relationships. Since individuals with NASH and their loved ones may not immediately recognize how the condition permeates various aspects of their lives, education plays a crucial role, empowering both those affected and their caregivers to feel confident knowing that they or their loved one is getting the testing and treatment they need. This caregiver guide from the advocacy group NASH kNOWledge provides steps people can take to care for themselves as they care for someone living with NASH.

Couple meeting with doctor online.

#5 – You have the power to help your liver

Living with NASH can be difficult, confusing, even overwhelming. The good news is, there are steps you can take today to slow or even reverse liver damage caused by NASH. This starts with a balanced diet, limited alcohol use, and regular, moderate-intensity exercise, which together may help manage your condition. Please consult your doctor to make sure you choose activities that are safe for you. While making these changes can feel challenging at times, support is available. If you feel like NASH is overwhelming or want to learn from others who may be going through similar experiences, check out the advocacy groups dedicated to helping people living with fatty liver and NASH like the ones below.

Considering homeschooling? Here are helpful resources

2024-07-18T05:01:00

(BPT) – If you’ve been thinking about homeschooling your children — or you’re already doing so — you’re not alone. According to the Washington Post, homeschooling has continued to surge since the pandemic, becoming the “fastest growing form of education in the country,” with an estimated 1.9-2.7 million students being educated at home in the U.S.

Who are today’s homeschooling families?

The reasons many parents are choosing homeschooling today, as well as the demographics of these families, are complex and diverse. Research from the Washington Post found that some of the top reasons today’s families opt for homeschooling include concerns about the school environment, worries about their children’s safety and bullying, as well as dissatisfaction with the quality of the academic instruction being provided at their child’s school.

The National Home Education Research Institute (NHERI) reports that homeschooling families today also include people from a much wider variety of backgrounds, income and education levels than previously thought. For example, about 41% of homeschooling families are non-white, including Black, Asian and Hispanic students.

Because of the varied backgrounds and outlooks of parents who homeschool today, there’s a real need for more options for secular resources to help design the best possible curriculum to meet the needs of all homeschooling families.

In addition, many families who send their children to school also want to find high-quality materials to help supplement their child’s education at home.

How to find resources to meet customized needs

Homeschooling families are as unique as every child, and as the reasons for choosing to homeschool grow, parents want resources that are not limited to a specific worldview. Parents are seeking support and resources to supplement their child’s education and support their learning experience at home.

Families looking to bolster their child’s education at home — whether they homeschool or not — can easily feel overwhelmed by available educational resources and not know where to begin.

Expertly manage the back-to-school bustle

2024-07-18T08:45:00

(BPT) – With the school year just around the corner, it’s time to start preparing for an exciting season of educational growth, evening sports games and school lunches. All busy parents know the importance of not only preparing accordingly but also brainstorming ways to make their child’s new school year extra special.

You may not be able to do all your school supply shopping now, but there are other ways you can prepare yourself for a new school year. Check out these five expert tips that can help you effortlessly manage the hustle and bustle of the back-to-school season.

1. Plan ahead

The first thing you can do to set yourself up for success is to plan ahead. Start by setting up a family calendar in the house or utilize a shared online calendar. Your calendar is bound to fill up with school events, project deadlines and sports schedules, so there is no better time than now to put pen to paper.

By having an organized calendar with your family’s schedule ready before the academic year starts, you’ll be able to sail smoothly through the back-to-school months. Your future self will thank you for taking this step, as it may lower your stress levels during the busiest days of the school year.

2. Create a routine

Daily routines provide a sense of stability and help streamline your family’s schedule. What should you include in your daily routine? From sleeping and study schedules to mealtimes and family-focused activities, a structured routine will help create healthy daily rhythms. This will also ensure a balance between home and school life.

3. Bring joy to lunchboxes

Lunchtime can be a highlight of the day, not just for kids but for parents, too! What you pack in your child’s lunchbox can really brighten their day. Of course, it’s important to include a balanced and nutritious meal with items like sandwiches, carrots and fruit. But why not add a touch of fun with a tasty snack?

Consider packing Hostess® CupCakes or Hostess® Kazbars™ to bring a smile to your child’s face during lunchtime. Both snacks offer a delightful treat that will make lunchtime something to look forward to. For an extra special touch, include a note of encouragement in your child’s lunchbox.

And remember, you deserve a treat, too. Whether you’re packing your own lunch or keeping snacks on hand while running errands, don’t forget to enjoy a fun snack for yourself.

Find Hostess® snacks and other treats at grocery stores nationwide and visit HostessCakes.com to discover a variety of delicious, joyful snacks.

4. Set up a homework station

In an age of technology and distraction, homework can feel like a chore, but setting up a homework station can help your child focus on their tasks. To create a successful homework station, designate a quiet place in your home and organize the space with a sturdy desk, pencils, pens, paper and any other supplies your student may need to complete their assignments with ease.

5. Be prepared for sports events

If you’re the parent of an athlete, you know that showing up for the games isn’t the only way to show your support. Bringing fun snacks, treats and drinks to sports events can show your child how much you’re invested in their sport.

You won’t always have time to prepare homemade snacks before the big game, so save time and stress by picking up a delicious premade snack such as Hostess® Kazbars™ that the whole team, including parents, will enjoy. This simple act can bolster team spirit and help celebrate the big win.

Beat the back-to-school bustle with these five simple tips. Not only will it make your life easier, but you’ll set your family up for success all year long.

(BPT) – Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC), an RWJBarnabas Health facility, has received a visionary gift of $30 million from Andrea and Anthony Melchiorre to support the new multidisciplinary standalone cancer center now under construction on the hospital campus in Livingston, New Jersey. The Melchiorre Cancer Center at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center will open in 2025.

Over the past 12 years, the Melchiorre family has been extremely generous to the hospital, supporting numerous programs, including the Cooperman Family Pavilion, Radiation Oncology, and the Emergency Department. The family’s most recent commitment brings their total giving to the hospital to nearly $50 million and supports the new $225 million, five-story, 137,000-square-foot cancer center.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Melchiorre family for this profoundly generous gift, as well as for their unwavering service to CBMC and RWJBarnabas Health. Through their investment, we are expanding access to cancer care across New Jersey,” said Mark E. Manigan, President and Chief Executive Officer of RWJBarnabas Health.

Bruce Schonbraun, Chair of the Board of Trustees at CBMC, added, “As a member of the Board of Trustees since 2017, Andrea has embodied visionary leadership and support and has helped build CBMC into a true regional and national destination for world-class cancer care. I join the board, leadership, medical staff, and the entire organization in conveying our unending gratitude to Andrea and Anthony.”

“When this new center opens in December 2025, it will serve as the northern hub for RWJBarnabas Health’s oncology services,” said Richard L. Davis, President and Chief Executive Officer of CBMC. “Thanks to donors like the Melchiorres, patients will have access to a full array of medical, surgical, and radiation oncology services under one roof.”

Building on their longstanding partnership, RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, are making transformative statewide investments to reimagine cancer care. The Melchiorre Cancer Center along with the Vogel Medical Campus in Monmouth County and the Jack and Sheryl Morris Cancer Center in New Brunswick, which will be New Jersey’s first freestanding cancer hospital, will bring together nationally recognized physicians and provide the most advanced cancer treatments and compassionate care for the communities we serve.

“RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute have created an integrated world-class network of comprehensive cancer research and care, bringing new state-of-the-art facilities such as the Melchiorre Cancer Center, close to home for patients,” stated Steven K. Libutti, MD, Director of Rutgers Cancer Institute and Senior Vice President, Oncology Services, RWJBarnabas Health. “We are extremely grateful to supporters like the Melchiorre family who are helping us transform the face of cancer, together.”

“Expanded capabilities and facilities are made possible in part thanks to growing philanthropic investments being made to the health system,” said Glenn Miller, Executive Vice President and Chief Development Officer for RWJBarnabas Health. “People want to support our mission — and they want to fight cancer. This gift from Andrea and Anthony is the fifth historic gift that we have received in the last few years. We are humbled by these visionary investments that inspire donors at all levels.”

Bookings and new hosts on the rise for Paris 2024

2024-07-17T07:01:00

(BPT) – Interest in the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024 is influencing how guests are traveling this summer. As of March 31, nights booked during the dates of the Olympics are over five times (400%) higher than they were in the Paris region the same time a year ago1. Paris, the most searched city on the platform during the event2, has seen an all-time high for active listings. There’s an increase of nearly 40% in the Paris region compared to a year ago3, as hosts prepare to welcome domestic and international travelers.

Top countries for nights booked during the Olympics

While guests from over 160 countries and regions4 have already booked their stays during the event, travelers coming from the U.S. are leading Olympics-related travel, booking more than 20% of stays in or near host cities during the Games. The big medal-winning countries of 2020 are also strongly represented in terms of the nationality of guests traveling to France during the Olympic Games: most of the 10 countries that have booked the most travel to France are among the top medal winners from Tokyo 2020. French guests are currently in third place in terms of nights booked, but domestic bookings are expected to increase closer to the event as the majority of ticket-holders are French5.

In terms of growth, Asian countries are in the leaderboard: Airbnb has witnessed the highest increase in travelers coming from Mainland China, India, Hong Kong (SAR) and Japan. This is followed by Czechia, Mexico, Ireland, Brazil, Luxembourg and Colombia.

Tourism dispersal across France

It’s not just central Paris drawing visitors this summer. Places like Saint-Denis, Châteauroux and Lille have also seen a significant rise in interest thanks to the strategic decision to host Paris 2024 throughout France.

Airbnb data reveals some of the top destinations outside of central Paris favored by different nationalities looking to support their national teams during the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024:

  • Dutch and Australian guests, who are among the top of the medal table for field hockey, booked the most nights to the Colombes area, where the sport will be played.
  • One of the top destinations for Spaniards and Brazillians is Bordeaux, where their national football teams play two matches.
  • One of the top destinations for Chinese guests is Vanves, near the venue for table tennis, a sport which the Chinese have long dominated.

Benefits for local communities

According to a study7, stays on Airbnb during the dates of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 are estimated to generate €2,000 (over $2,170 USD) for a typical host in the Paris region, having a total economic impact of almost 1 billion euros (over 1 billion USD) and supporting almost 7,300 full-time equivalent jobs in the country.

Many local families have joined the platform to benefit from this opportunity. In the Paris region alone, there is a 40% rise in active listings in the first quarter, compared to the same period in 2023.

“Airbnb will play an important role in accommodating the increased influx of visitors coming for the Games, providing varied and affordable lodging options and supporting the overall economic growth in areas that haven’t always benefited from tourism. The Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024 highlights how Airbnb helps disperse travel and spreads economic benefits by allowing people to stay in local neighborhoods, close to Olympics venues, like Saint-Denis or smaller cities like Chateauroux,” said Clément Eulry, Country Manager for France and Belgium at Airbnb.

Families and groups flock to the Olympics

More than 50% of travelers to the Games are looking for accommodation that can welcome families or groups of three or more8 — which can be a better value than traditional accommodations. Some of the nationalities with a higher preference for group travel during the Games include travelers from the Netherlands, Switzerland, the U.S., Spain and the U.K9. Airbnb recently introduced new features that make planning group trips easier than ever including shared wishlists, a redesigned messages tab that allows everyone on a trip to message with the host in a group thread and more.
