From molten rock to modern architecture – celebrating 90 years of Thermafiber

2024-08-07T09:01:00

(BPT) – Summer is peak season for residential and commercial construction. Advances in material science and novel technologies are contributing to safety and efficiency on the jobsite as they help architects and contractors achieve high-performing homes and buildings. While today’s construction pros are making use of new tools and practices, they continue to trust legacy materials that have proven their value through decades of service in high-performing buildings. Mineral wool insulation offers a good example of a building material that has stood the test of time. Thermafiber® mineral wool has helped support safety, acoustics and comfort in homes and buildings for 90 years.

A material born in fire

Introduced in 1934, Thermafiber® mineral wool insulation is comprised of a blend of raw materials including rock and blast furnace slag, a byproduct of the steel industry. The insulation is made by melting materials at temperatures above 2600 F and channeling the molten “lava-like” mixture onto high-speed spinning wheels. The intense temperatures and high-speed spinning process produces a resilient and non-combustible insulating material that is fire resistant. Manufacturing processes also contribute to versatility. For example, specific steps and process controls during manufacturing can formulate mineral wool to absorb or repel water.

More than the name implies

The combination of “thermal” and “fiber” in the name might suggest that Thermafiber® is a temperature-centric material. However, its performance goes far beyond helping mitigate heat transfer. Installed in wall cavities, building perimeters and behind the facade, mineral wool helps deliver several benefits in homes, commercial buildings, schools, hospitals and other built structures. Following are just five ways that mineral wool helps support high-performing structures.

1. Fire safety: Mineral wool can be precisely formulated to support fire resistance and contribute to passive fire protection. Complementing detective fire systems like smoke detectors and active systems such as sprinklers, mineral wool requires no activation mechanism to deliver fire resistance. Mineral wool’s reputation as a fire-resistant material is evidenced by its use in the marketplace. Thermafiber® mineral wool is trusted in 4 out of 5 of America’s tallest buildings and was the first insulation to receive the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s SAFETY Act Designation. In homes, mineral wool insulation’s fire resistance contributes to homeowner peace of mind in critical areas of the home where fire is a concern such as the kitchen and the shared wall between garage and home.

2. Acoustic performance: Simply defined, noise is unwanted sound, and it can present a problem for employees, students, healthcare workers and homeowners. Sources of noise include room-specific noises (i.e., monitors, alarms, ventilators in a hospital room, meetings in conference rooms, etc.), external traffic and mechanical rooms. Spaces ranging from hospital rooms to dorm rooms to home entertainment rooms are just a few areas in residential and commercial buildings where noise reduction and comfort are top concerns. Mineral wool insulation installed in buildings acts to isolate noise and reduce sound transmission between spaces.

3. Moisture mitigation: A home or building must be able to manage liquid and vapor moisture and defend against moisture getting trapped in the wall cavity. Installed as a continuous insulation, mineral wool helps reduce the possibility of condensation within the wall when warm, moist air is prevented from reaching a dew point temperature. For example, Owens Corning Thermafiber® RainBarrier® helps venues ranging from hospitals to museums efficiently drain water from a building’s wall cavity system.

4. Thermal performance: During hot summers and cold winters, Thermafiber® mineral insulation helps regulate indoor temperatures as it helps act as a barrier to heat transfer and offers an R-value of up to 4.3 per inch of thickness.

5. Enduring innovation: For 90 years, Thermafiber® mineral wool insulation has insulated homes and buildings across the globe with leading innovations in insulation products, applications, systems and accessories.

The commitment to advancing material science isn’t slowing down. Thermafiber® mineral wool’s 90-year legacy of innovation continues to explore new frontiers to elevate the performance of homes and buildings under construction today as well as those that will be built in the future.

How to make home modifications for independence

2024-08-07T08:01:00

(BPT) – Being safe and comfortable at home is a large part of living well. Home modifications and repairs can help everyone prevent accidents and maintain an independent lifestyle, especially older adults and people with disabilities.

Many older adults prefer to live in their own homes for as long as possible, but too often don’t think about whether a home can adapt to their needs as they age. Making improvements before they are needed is a good way to ensure that a home is ready for aging in place. Forward-thinking improvements can also prevent falls, which often result in the need for long-term care.

Changes can be made to improve both the accessibility and adaptability of a home. Accessibility improvements involve tasks like widening doorways and lowering countertop heights for someone who uses a wheelchair. Adaptability changes, such as adding grab bars in bathrooms, are improvements to assist people for whom strength and balance may have become a challenge. These changes can usually be made without a major redesign or full-blown renovation.

You can get started making your home ready for long-term living by conducting a top-to-bottom assessment.

Home assessment

Before making any changes, look at the entire home. Keep in mind items that may be needed now as well as in the future. This checklist can help identify areas that might need improvement. Everyone has different needs, but in general, a “no” answer may be cause for action.

  • Are exterior walkways and entrances well-lit?
  • Is there a step-free entrance to the home?
  • Are entrance doors easy to lock, unlock, open and close?
  • Does the main floor include a kitchen, bedroom and full bathroom?
  • Are doorways wide enough for someone using a wheelchair, walker or service animal?
  • Is wall-to-wall carpeting secure and in good condition (flat, not bunched up)?
  • Are area rugs secured to the floor with non-slip padding?
  • Are walkways free from obstructions and hazards like cords and furniture?
  • Do stairways have sturdy handrails on both sides?
  • Can bathroom and kitchen cabinets be easily reached?
  • Is there a step-free shower entrance?
  • Are grab bars available near the shower and toilet?
  • Do bathtubs and showers have non-slip mats, adhesive strips or slip-free floors?
  • Will smoke detectors provide visual as well as audio alerts?
  • Are telephones easily accessible on all floors?

Get excited about local electric vehicles

2024-08-07T05:01:00

(BPT) – Spend a few days in a waterfront town, vacation destination or golf community, and you’ll likely see a surge of local electric vehicles on neighborhood streets. The street-legal, low-speed vehicle category extends the fun, yet practical vehicles to suburbia and urban downtowns as the market for sustainable transportation grows. Low-speed vehicles (LSVs) offer a safe, more efficient and more enjoyable drive– especially when highway speeds and 300 miles of range aren’t required for daily drives.

Here’s what you need to know about low-speed EVs and why you should buy one.

What is an LSV?

LSVs are a specific, federally designated class of motor vehicles, not to be confused with golf carts. These elevated EVs have significant safety upgrades and they are generally street-legal across the country on roads with a posted speed limit of 35 mph or less. Perfect for everyday errands.

What sets these EVs apart?

Gem e4 LSV in arctic frost in the driveway plugged into a standard outlet.
We live in a car-dependent nation, yet nearly 50% of all car journeys are under three miles. That percentage is even higher in cities. Consumers need mobility solutions that fit their needs, including eco-friendly GEMs for localized mobility.

These head-turning EVs are stylish and fun to drive. Flexible charging can plug into any standard 110V outlet with fast-charging options available when needed. And with battery packs providing upwards of 100 miles, LSVs have more than enough range for multiple trips in a day. GEM LSVs even offer an optional rooftop solar panel that further increases range and reduces reliance on the grid.

Unlike a golf cart, LSVs are legal after dusk, just like a full-size EV, but at a much lower purchase price. A fully enclosed cab with hard doors and automotive-grade windows provides comfort and peace of mind from weather while containing kids, gear and groceries. Or remove the doors for a breezy, open-air ride. They are also incredibly durable and easy to clean, so don’t worry about dirty feet, sports bags or potted plants for the garden.

Where can LSVs go?

Business and residential areas in every U.S. state have speed limits between 25-35 mph, making LSVs an increasingly viable, safe and community-friendly option. Check out the GEM GO web-app for an easy-to-use map of posted speed limits legal for LSVs. And many cities are going even further and adopting Vision Zero’s 20 is Plenty policy in an effort to curb traffic deaths by posting 20 mph speed limits.

Additionally, in populated urban and community environments with congested roads, LSVs arrive at the same time as high-speed, full-size vehicles. While the compact footprint takes up less space on crowded roadways, with a variety of models and seating options, GEM electric LSVs come in two-, four- or six-seat models and provide an automotive-like driving experience for enhanced comfort.

Top reasons to buy an LSV

  1. Eco-Friendly Transportation
  2. Cost-Effective Operation
  3. Ideal for Local Trips
  4. Fun for the Whole Family
  5. Ease of Parking
  6. Safety Features
  7. Promotes Community Interaction
  8. Incentives and Benefits
  9. Versatility and Customization

How much are LSVs?

Like any vehicle, there is a range. Starting MSRPs for GEM LSVs are e2: $15,240, e4: $17,490 and e6: $21,240. At a cost-per-mile of just $.03, they are as inexpensive as it comes, drawing less from the grid than full-size EVs and delivering a 30-50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions over combustion vehicles.

Save your SUVs and full-speed sedans for the highway. The experience of cruising in an LSV offers a sense of calm, ease and fun that’s often missing from the fast-paced world of conventional driving — making it more than just a practical choice and providing an opportunity to Reimagine your Ride.

Champions reveal their secrets to smooth summer skin

2024-08-07T10:01:00

(BPT) – If you struggle to maintain smooth skin, free from unwanted hair all summer long, you might wonder how champions from a Team USA athlete to a top dermatologist manage it.

Team USA track and field athlete Tara Davis-Woodhall is competing in Paris this summer for her second Olympics, and she has a go-to hair removal brand she’s been relying on since her teens … it’s Nair, and she is loving the recently reformulated Nair™ products, now made with fresh scents for a pleasant experience that helps make the most of your skin.

A champion’s choice

Taking care of her skin so it always looks and feels great is one task Davis-Woodhall is happy to check off her list of things to do, so she can focus all her attention on this summer’s goal: training and competing in the Olympics.

“Oat Milk and Vanilla Body Cream is my favorite scent,” said Davis-Woodhall. “I love how it smells, and how quick and easy it is to use.”

For your busy summer — even if it doesn’t involve international travel and global Olympic competition — you can champion your skin by trying reformulated Nair products that work like magic: Now you see hair, now you don’t! Best yet, the products also help your skin look, feel and smell wonderful.

Not your mother’s hair remover

While your mom may have shown you how to use it, Nair has been perfecting hair removal for over 80 years and has evolved to meet today’s needs, improving care for your skin.

In addition to fabulous new scents, today’s products are free of dyes, parabens, phthalates and sulfates — and they’re dermatologist-tested. You can choose from these products to help you achieve your flawless summer look:

  • Oat Milk and Vanilla Body Cream: A mix of natural extracts combining notes of creamy coconut milk, vanilla bean and sweet almond, with hints of fresh strawberry and soft musk, to give Tara Davis-Woodhall’s favorite hair remover an irresistible scent.
  • Sensitive Coconut Oil Shower Cream Hair Remover with Natural Coconut Oil and Vitamin E: If you have sensitive skin, you’ll appreciate having blade-free, hair-free, carefree skin that stays smooth and touchable days longer than by shaving. The new fragrance technology uses natural extracts to blend notes of creamy coconut, warm amber and clean musk for a soothing scent.
  • Prep & Smooth Face with Hydrating Watermelon Extract & Hyaluronic Acid: This one-step formula helps you create the perfect canvas for your skincare and makeup application, thanks to its easy, touch-free, mess-free way to exfoliate skin and remove fuzz. Infused with skin-loving ingredients and featuring an ergonomic applicator, this revolutionary hydrating formula can transform your routine — and boasts a fresh watermelon scent.

Skincare advice from a skin champion

To address your concerns about hair removal, board-certified dermatologist and skin champion Dr. Tia Paul answers a few frequently asked questions and highlights the benefits of going bladeless.

Do you need to be careful trying new products?

“If it’s a product you haven’t used before, always do a ‘patch test,'” Paul said. “Everyone has different sensitivities to ingredients, so it’s best to try the product on a small patch of skin for 5 minutes or whatever the instructions tell you. Then, wait one week to 10 days to ensure you don’t have a reaction. If you don’t see or feel any irritation, redness, swelling or itchiness, you can go ahead and use the product.”

Should you ditch your razor?

“You bet. The smooth, hair-free skin achieved with Nair™ products lasts days longer than shaving, because Nair hair removal creams chemically remove hair below the skin’s surface,” explained Paul. “Shaving physically removes it just above the surface. For even longer-lasting results, try Nair waxes. The results can last up to 4 weeks. Think of what you can do with all the extra free time!”

How can hair removal products actually benefit your skin?

“In addition to ditching blades that may irritate your skin, Nair’s products are much gentler, and contain ingredients designed for each specific use (such as face, legs and the bikini area), including vitamin E, hyaluronic acid, Moroccan argan oil, cocoa butter, aloe and oat milk that can help exfoliate, hydrate and nourish your skin,” Paul said. “So, beyond hair removal, you’re getting extra benefits from each of these products that can improve and enhance how your skin looks and feels.”

Ready to ditch the blades and enjoy long-lasting, smooth and scent-sational skin? Visit NairCare.com or follow Nair on Instagram: @naircare to find your next favorite products to help champion your skin.

From tide to table: A snow crab roll’s exciting voyage

2024-08-07T07:03:00

(BPT) – Have you ever had the pleasure of tasting genuine Canadian snow crab? Known for its sweet and salty flavors, this delicacy often leaves you craving more. However, it’s not found in many sushi rolls, and the alternatives that are often used don’t quite hit the mark.

So, what exactly does it take for this prized ingredient to journey from the sea to your sushi roll? Let’s explore how Canadian snow crab makes its way to your table (and your favorite sushi)!

Canadian snow crabs live in the depths of cold ocean waters off Canada’s coastlines. Fishermen catch these succulent crustaceans by placing pots (metal cages) in the crabs’ habitat.

Of course, not just any snow crab will do. Fishermen that follow responsible fishing practices only harvest male crabs above a certain weight and do not exceed the quotas set by Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans. By doing so, they’re helping preserve the population and environment for future snow crab harvests so you can continue to enjoy snow crab sushi season after season.

Once caught, these crabs are transported to restaurants, where they’re expertly prepared and served to delight your taste buds!

Taste the difference

Sustainably caught snow crab isn’t just good for the environment. How crab is caught impacts the ingredient quality and, ultimately, taste. That’s why Kura Revolving Sushi Bar restaurants choose premium, ethically sourced Canadian snow crab, ensuring a delicious choice for sushi lovers like you!

To highlight this amazing ingredient Kura Sushi USA, Inc. has crafted a new Snow Crab California Roll. Made with quality ingredients, this new offering is packed with coastal flavor!

The roll is made with mouthwatering snow crab swooped from Canadian Pacific waters, fused with avocado wrapped in sushi rice and dried seaweed topped with sesame. You’ll enjoy every bite of this crustacean creation that’s had an exciting journey from tide to table.

A system to care for indoor air starts at the top

2024-08-07T07:01:00

(BPT) – Many homeowners are diligent about having their home’s air conditioning system regularly inspected and serviced. After all, who wants to toss and turn on a sweltering night because the air conditioner stopped working? However, a home’s cooling equipment is not the only residential HVAC component that benefits from regular inspection. The various parts of a home’s heating and cooling system work together to support whole-home comfort and energy efficiency. Consequently, an HVAC maintenance call should not end with simply checking the equipment but should evaluate the whole system — including a home’s attic.

Consider the whole system

Depending on location, some components of the HVAC system are more obvious than others. The condenser that conditions air as well as the registers that allow cooled/conditioned air to enter living spaces are typically visible. Issues that can compromise comfort — like a closed register — may be easy to spot and resolve with simple practices. For example, changing the air filter regularly, as directed by the manufacturer, can help support the cooling system’s operating efficiency. Problems in more remote areas of a home’s comfort system — like attic ductwork — can be more challenging to spot and resolve.

When attic ductwork is damaged, or an attic lacks sufficient insulation, comfort and energy efficiency issues can occur. Loose connections or holes in attic ductwork can allow particulates in the attic to be distributed throughout the home’s interior and conditioned air can escape before it reaches the supply register. Some potential signs of problems with attic ductwork include:

  • Excess dust in the living areas of the home
  • Musty and unusual odors (think attic smell)
  • Rooms that are consistently too hot or too cold
  • Equipment that cycles on and off more frequently
  • A spike in energy bills

Depending on conditions in the attic, insect or vermin debris, mold or simply a “stale air” smell can potentially infiltrate into a home’s living spaces. If moisture is present in the attic, conditions can allow for mold to grow, entering ductwork and “polluting” indoor air.

Caring for air with a “whole home” approach

As part of the HVAC system, attic ductwork should not be overlooked when it comes to protecting a home’s indoor air quality. A whole-home approach to caring for a home’s air considers how conditions in the attic (and other parts of the home — like crawl spaces and garages) can influence air throughout the home. Because ductwork is often located in the attic, this location provides an attractive opportunity to potentially improve comfort throughout the whole home and helps support energy efficiency. Adding an adequate amount of attic insulation and retrofitting attic ductwork are two steps to consider when taking a whole-home approach to air care.

Contractors designated as Owens Corning AirCare® Professionals are trained on the whole home approach and look to identify areas in a home’s attic that may lead to problems with air throughout the home. AirCare® Professionals are equipped with tools to assess and evaluate conditions in the attic. For example, assuring an adequate insulation thickness can help support thermal efficiency in all seasons. AirCare® Professionals can recommend a level of insulation to help the homeowner increase energy efficiency.

In addition to measuring attic insulation, an Owens Corning AirCare® Professional can help ensure that ductwork in the attic is properly sealed and sized to help support comfort and energy efficiency. He or she will evaluate the system for loose connections and evaluate the ductwork to ensure components are properly sealed. Starting at the top — in the attic — can bring a whole-home approach to supporting an HVAC system.
