Think You’re Too Young To Get Colon Cancer? Think Again

2025-02-27T10:01:00

(BPT) – Have you ever thought, “I’m too young to get colon cancer”? The truth is that colorectal cancer (CRC) is affecting more younger adults than ever before. Despite this alarming trend, many people remain unaware of their risk. Since colon cancer isn’t exactly a topic for dinner table conversation, important discussions about family history often get overlooked. But understanding your risk and getting screened early could make all the difference.

That’s why health experts have taken action. In 2021, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force lowered the recommended screening age to 45 to help detect CRC sooner. Still, many younger adults put off getting tested, either because they don’t know their risk, lack insurance coverage, or simply want to avoid the hassle of a colonoscopy.

So, if you’re worried about your digestive health or you are experiencing symptoms, what are your options? Even if you have health insurance, a colonoscopy is not always covered unless you meet specific criteria. Plus, the preparation and recovery can be time-consuming.

The good news? There are easier, less invasive options you can use at home — and one of them, Reese’s ColoTest, doesn’t even require a prescription.

With Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in March, now is a great time to learn about your screening options, and the benefits and drawbacks of each, to help stay ahead of the disease.

Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy has long been considered the ‘gold standard’ in CRC screening. It is recommended every ten years for adults 45 and older (or more frequently if you’re at high risk). Insurance is unlikely to cover a colonoscopy unless you’re eligible due to age or family history of colorectal cancer, polyps and conditions including ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s, Lynch Syndrome and others. Because a colonoscopy is a costly — and time-consuming — procedure involving days of unpleasant preparation, sedation and recovery, many people put it off. Learn more about colonoscopies and other screening methods at ColorectalCancer.org.

Stool DNA test

If you’re at average risk for CRC and 45 or over, you’ll need a prescription for an at-home stool DNA test kit. You then send the sample to a lab for results in a couple of weeks. This kind of test uses a combination of stool-based DNA and hemoglobin testing to detect abnormal cells that can indicate the presence of cancer. Most insurers cover the cost only if you’re 45 or older, but you should check your health insurance plan for specifics.

Blood tests

Recently approved blood-based screening tests can detect colorectal cancer by analyzing specific biomarkers in your blood. On the plus side, they can be combined with other routine blood work, but they do require going to the lab, getting stuck with a needle, and waiting for results. Since these tests are still relatively new and insurance coverage may vary, it’s a good idea to check with your provider.

FIT test

Fecal immunochemical tests (FIT) look for the presence of hidden blood in stool, offering a simple, non-invasive alternative for those hesitant about colonoscopies or interested in more frequent testing. Reese’s ColoTest, for example, is an affordable, easily accessible screening option available without a prescription. With just one stool sample and no prep or dietary restrictions, you can self-test at home as often as you like — without the hassle of lab processing.

straight on shot of colo test box

Unlike some FIT tests that require sending a sample to a lab and waiting days for results, Reese’s ColoTest delivers results in just one minute. ColoTest is 98.8% accurate in detecting hidden blood in the stool, which can be an early warning sign for colorectal cancer and other conditions, including diverticulitis, gastrointestinal disorders, colitis and polyps. It’s available at pharmacy retailers nationwide and online, including Walmart, Amazon and over 7,000 CVS Pharmacy stores, plus on CVS.com.

“Researchers found that people who had FIT testing done every year had a 33% lower chance of dying from colorectal cancer,” said Jeffrey Reese, president of Reese Pharmaceutical. “FIT tests can be started at a younger age and repeated every year, providing earlier detection opportunities — especially for anyone with a higher risk.”

The bottom line? Screening for colorectal cancer has never been easier — or more important. Whether you choose a colonoscopy, a stool-based test or a simple FIT test, the key is to get screened. Early detection saves lives, and with new, more convenient options available, there’s no reason to put it off. To learn more, visit MyColoTest.com.

Transitional gardening: How to choose plants that can thrive moving from cold to warm weather

2025-02-27T14:25:00

(BPT) – Keep your garden vibrant all season long with these cold weather-resistant plants.

As winter continues to keep temps fluctuating, many gardeners assume their work is done until spring. However, plenty of plants flourish in colder months, bringing color and texture to even the coldest winter landscapes. Whether you’re looking to brighten your outdoor space or maintain a thriving garden year-round, selecting the right winter-friendly plants is key to cold weather beauty and spring blossoms.

With the right plants and preparation, you can enjoy beautiful greenery and even colorful blooms throughout the coldest months. Proper planning also helps protect your landscape investments from seasonal damage.

Winter gardening facts

  • Cold-hardy plants can survive freezing temperatures – Certain species, like evergreens and hellebores, are built to endure harsh weather conditions.
  • Some flowers bloom even in winter – Plants like camellias and winter jasmine add pops of color to an otherwise dormant landscape.
  • Soil preparation is crucial – A layer of mulch insulates plant roots, helping them withstand frost.
  • Winter gardening requires less maintenance – With slower plant growth and fewer pests, winter landscapes are easier to manage than summer gardens.

Best winter-to-spring plants for your garden

  • Hellebores (Lenten Roses): These hardy perennials bloom in late winter, showcasing elegant pink, purple and white flowers.
  • Camellias: Their bright red and pink blooms appear in late fall and continue through early spring.
  • Winter Jasmine: Producing cheerful yellow flowers, this plant thrives even in freezing temperatures.
  • Pansies and Violas: These frost-resistant flowers add vibrant colors to flower beds and pots.
  • Evergreens (Holly, Boxwood, Juniper): Provide year-round structure and greenery, even in snow-covered landscapes.

Transitional flowers that will stay strong in spring

  • Crocus – One of the first signs of spring, these hardy flowers pop up even when there’s still a chill in the air. They come in purple, yellow and white.
  • Snowdrops – These delicate flowers often emerge while there’s still snow on the ground, making them perfect for the transition to spring.
  • Daffodils – Bright and cheerful, daffodils bloom early in the spring and are fairly cold-resistant.
  • Primrose – These early bloomers offer color in various shades, often starting in late winter or very early spring.

Cold-weather gardening tips

  • Choose the right plants – Look for native species or varieties bred for winter endurance.
  • Use mulch for insulation – A layer of mulch helps regulate soil temperature and protect roots.
  • Water before freezing temps – Moist soil retains heat better, reducing frost damage.
  • Provide wind protection – Strong winter winds can damage delicate plants, so consider placing windbreaks or using burlap wraps.

How to build and support muscle this World Protein Day and beyond

2025-02-27T07:01:00

(BPT) – Whether you’re an everyday athlete or weekend warrior, working toward your weight loss goals or hoping to maintain your strength and balance as you age, you probably know how vital muscles are.

You may also know that protein plays a big role in building and maintaining muscle, but you may be unsure how much you need. Protein is essential for tissue repair, hormone and enzyme production, and overall metabolism. Yet, because requirements vary according to age, sex, body composition and activity levels, many adults may not be meeting their individual needs.

“Ensuring adequate protein intake is crucial for overall health, particularly in terms of muscle development and maintenance, and it also plays a role in healthy weight management,” said Registered Dietitian Susan Bowerman, senior director, Worldwide Nutrition Education and Training at Herbalife and chair of the Herbalife Dietetic Advisory Board. “When prioritizing fitness, it’s important to meet specific protein requirements from a variety of sources and to evenly distribute protein consumption throughout the day, to support muscle protein synthesis.”

In honor of World Protein Day, Bowerman shares tips on how to boost protein intake and what to look for in a protein supplement.

Protein needs change with age

As you age, your body’s ability to use protein declines, which means you need a higher intake to maintain muscle mass and overall health. Older adults should aim for a minimum of 1.0-1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day to support muscles and health. Higher amounts may be needed to support the needs of physically active older adults or those with particular health conditions.[1],[2]

Tap into plant protein

A well-balanced mixture of plant proteins can provide ample high-quality, complete protein. Plant proteins are found in soy foods, beans, peas, lentils and whole grains — which also provide important vitamins and minerals.

However, protein intake recommendations for vegans and vegetarians are about 10% higher than for those whose diets contain animal protein.[3],[4] Products like Herbalife’s Protein Drink Mix Select contain 15 grams of easily-digestible protein from a blend of pea, rice and quinoa, and can help you get the necessary protein when following a plant-based diet.

Milk proteins can boost muscle growth

Milk proteins — whey and casein — are good sources of a particular set of amino acids that are well-suited for promoting muscle protein synthesis. They’re rapidly taken up by cells, which is why they’re often recommended as the perfect post-workout option. If you don’t prefer dairy, choose proteins that deliver all the essential amino acids in sufficient quantities, or consider a supplement made from a blend of plant proteins, such as pea, pumpkin seed and chia seed.

Support heart health

Since plant proteins are naturally cholesterol-free and generally much lower in saturated fats, swap animal proteins for plant-based options when possible in order to help keep your cholesterol and blood pressure in check, which helps reduce your risk for heart disease. Some plant proteins come packed with fiber and antioxidants, which are also heart healthy.

Boost protein intake with supplements

Getting enough protein each day is only part of the challenge. Studies show that consuming protein in amounts that are evenly distributed throughout your day is more effective for muscle protein synthesis than having varying amounts at each meal. Aim for 20-40 grams of protein per meal (depending on your daily needs).[5],[6] This can be especially challenging for some meals, like breakfast, which is often a lower protein meal. Protein supplements can help you achieve your ideal protein intake and ensure it’s more evenly distributed throughout the day.

What to look for in a protein supplement:

“At Herbalife, we are committed to supporting your wellness journey with a variety of high-protein products. Our offerings are designed to fit seamlessly into your daily routine, making it easier to meet your protein needs,” said Bowerman. “Whether you’re looking to lose weight, build muscle, or simply maintain overall good health, our products, when combined with a healthy, balanced diet and lifestyle, provide the flexibility and convenience needed to achieve your health and fitness goals.”

Are all sugars created equal? New study shows maple syrup is the smarter sweetener

2025-02-27T07:01:00

(BPT) – As many people watch their sugar intake these days, it’s more important than ever to find ways to satisfy your sweet tooth using the healthiest source possible. While the USDA’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend limiting adding sugars to less than 10% of your total daily calories, the recommendations don’t differentiate where those sugars come from. And it turns out the source of sweetness can really make a difference for your health.

Clinical trial finds health benefits from pure maple syrup

Not all sources of sugar are in fact the same. A new study published in The Journal of Nutrition* is the first placebo-controlled clinical trial exploring the potential health benefits of maple syrup in humans due to maple’s micronutrients and polyphenols. Polyphenols are a category of compounds that are found in many plants.

The study found that substituting just 2 tablespoons of pure maple syrup for refined sugars reduced several cardiometabolic risk factors in humans, which could help prevent metabolic disease. When you have metabolic disease, that indicates you have an important risk factor for some of the most common and deadly conditions, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Cardiometabolic risk factors observed in the study included lowering blood sugar and blood pressure, reducing visceral abdominal fat (android fat reduction) and increasing beneficial gut bacteria.

“Although maple syrup is a source of sugar, which you should still limit in your diet, it’s a smarter sweetener,” said Sports and Media Dietitian Sarah Alsing, MS, RD; consultant to Maple from Canada and owner of Delightfully Fueled. “Beyond simply providing carbohydrates like other sugar sources, maple syrup also contains vitamins, minerals, amino acids and polyphenols. These micronutrients and polyphenols in pure maple syrup have now been shown to benefit blood sugar control, blood pressure, visceral fat mass (android fat reduction) and gut health. That’s pretty good motivation to change where you get your sugar.”

How to make the swap

Most dietary changes can seem overwhelming, but replacing refined sugar with pure maple syrup is an easy substitution anyone can make that still provides the sweetness you want, but also offers major health benefits.

Here are just a few of the many simple swaps you can make in everyday eating to substitute maple syrup for refined sugars:

  • Sweeten plain yogurt with maple syrup
  • Add maple syrup to sweeten coffee
  • Mix maple syrup in your morning oatmeal
  • Use maple syrup in place of sugar in baking recipes

“I love sweetening my oatmeal and plain Greek yogurt with maple syrup,” added Alsing, “and maple syrup can be easily used in a variety of savory as well as sweet recipes.”

You can feel even better about using unrefined, unprocessed pure maple syrup from Canada because it comes from trees, not factories. Canadian maple syrup is ideal for brunches, baking and barbecues, imparting the unique flavor of Canada’s iconic ingredient into a multitude of dishes — free from artificial additives or flavorings.

Rebuilding Lives: Supporting Customers in the Aftermath of Wildfires

2025-02-26T10:01:00

(BPT) – As the smoke from the January 2025 Southern California wildfires cleared, widespread destruction and damage slowly came into view. Thousands of residents suffered the loss of their homes and communities, including many State Farm customers. As firefighters and emergency responders worked to extinguish the fires, State Farm Catastrophe Response Team® members also deployed from across the country to help residents begin recovery in the aftermath of the fires.

“Californians truly are a resilient group of people,” reflects Troi McClure on her time spent with California customers facing the aftermath of the wildfires that ravaged the state. As a member of the State Farm Catastrophe Response Team, McClure’s time on-the-ground with California residents has left her with a deep admiration for their resilience and ability to recover and rebuild.

More than a house

Having just experienced the loss of her own grandmother’s home in Hurricane Helene, McClure’s personal understanding and compassion for customers comes through in her work. “It’s more than a house; it’s also about all the memories,” she said.

McClure is one of thousands keeping the State Farm® promise to California customers as part of the largest catastrophe response claims force in the industry. The catastrophe response team includes a dedicated, mobile workforce, specially trained to handle catastrophe claims and prepared to go anywhere in the country. The State Farm response also includes local agents who live and work in these same neighborhoods as our customers, and they are joined by thousands of employees across the country virtually helping answer questions and file claims.

The extra mile

Being a good neighbor in times of catastrophe often means going the extra mile. Christine Romero, a dedicated member of the State Farm Catastrophe Response Team for nearly two years, embarked on a 2,700-mile deployment from Virginia Beach to California in her cargo van. During a visit to Altadena to assess a claim, Romero witnessed firsthand the neighborhood’s devastation.

“It’s so important to stay focused on how we can help our customers, and that they know we’re here to help them recover,” said Romero. “That’s the promise we made to them.” This unwavering commitment keeps her grounded and determined to support customers through these challenging times. Over the past 18 months, Romero has responded to several nationwide catastrophes, always with the same goal in mind.

For team member Jackie Miller, going the extra mile included a 30-mile trip to return a medal found during a home inspection in the aftermath of the wildfires. When Miller made sure the medal was returned to its rightful owner, she learned it was given to the customer by former President Bill Clinton. That customer said Miller’s extra effort and caring demeanor tempered the stress recovering from the wildfire.

Making connections

Response team member Julia Washington welcomed the chance to help a California customer who is a U.S. Navy veteran in his 80s, making a real connection with him as they talked on the phone.

“He cried and said he felt like a ship at sea with no land in sight, but with this call he felt like he was being guided to land and safety,” said Washington. “He and I spoke for quite a while as I handled his homeowners claim and his rental claim. He said my humor and compassion made him forget his troubles, dried his tears, and made him laugh for the first time in days.”

These genuine connections help both the customer who is trying to recover and the team members who hear countless stories of heartbreak, destruction, and devastation.

On her sixth deployment, 28-year State Farm Claim Specialist Deyette Gardner connected with a customer while working at one of the State Farm Catastrophe Customer Care Sites set up in the impacted areas to offer face-to-face help with claims. Deyette walked the customer through the claims process, answered questions and provided the customer with an advance payment. The next morning, the customer returned with balloons and a card, and shouts of praise for Deyette — prompting applause, cheers, smiles, and tears throughout the Customer Care Site.

“As claim specialists, we offer empathy and understanding to customers during a difficult time,” Gardner said. “It’s natural to get emotional. The customer’s visit made me feel appreciated and valued.”

Ongoing challenges in California

“The great work of our frontline catastrophe claim team during the California wildfires reveals the very core of our mission to serve our customers and help them recover from the largest fire event we have ever experienced,” said Wensley Herbert, Senior Vice President — Property & Casualty Claims. In L.A. County alone, State Farm insures 250,000 homes and 880,000 automobiles. Across the state, State Farm Companies continue to insure over 1 million homes and over 4 million autos — representing billions in risk across the state.

This year’s wildfires highlight the personal suffering of residents and the overall difficulties facing the state and the insurance industry in the region. Historic increases in claim costs due to rising incidents and larger areas of wildfires, inflation, supply chain disruptions, plus labor and materials costs all mean higher home repair and rebuilding costs. There is also increasing exposure as more people move into areas prone to fires.

“The California insurance market is facing an availability crisis, leaving many residents without the protection they need for their homes and businesses,” said Dan Krause, Senior Vice President of State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company and President and Chief Executive Officer of State Farm General. “Our focus is on continuing to meet our customers’ needs and working with the State of California to create a sustainable insurance market. Outdated regulations that lead to lengthy rate approvals and other obstacles may need to be changed to alleviate the crisis. It’s crucial for us to take additional actions to address the situation so residents are properly covered and prepared for any risks they may face in the future.”

1. Organize and envision it

When your kids are busy like mine are, you’ll want to be sure that everything they’ve got has their names on it. You can use Scotch® Magic™ Tape to help you clearly label their water bottles, notebooks and more before they head out to their new extracurricular activities, classes or summer camps. The beauty of this go-to matte-finish tape is that it has hundreds of uses, and it’s invisible when applied — plus you can write on it using pen, pencil or marker for easy labeling.

I also like to start each year or season by making a vision board full of images that capture my goals, desires and dreams for the upcoming months. Scotch® Magic™ Tape helps me create a clear reminder of my “why” — the purpose behind the goals that I’m striving for — in a fun, concrete and visual way.

2. Move it or declutter it

Whether you’ve got an upcoming move planned, perhaps a college student moving away to campus this year — or you just want to start working on decluttering your home, Scotch® Heavy Duty Packaging Tape is your new best friend. I love that just one strip of this tape gets the job done, sticks instantly to cardboard boxes and creates a secure seal over box edges. Built with ultimate strength, it can hold up to 80 pounds, which makes it great for shipping supplies or gifts to my friends and family, knowing that my packages will stay safe and secure.

I also like to have plenty of packaging tape on hand when I’m in declutter mode. There’s no better feeling than clearing out and donating gently used items that someone else may need.

From screen to spoon: How your phone can turn you into a master chef

2025-02-25T17:01:00

(BPT) – Make your smartphone a secret weapon for mastering your favorite recipes using apps, connected gadgets, AI and more.

In a world where your phone is as essential as a chef’s knife, the latest devices and technology can help you up-level your cooking skills. From trying quirky viral recipes to using artificial intelligence (AI) all while connected to America’s largest and fastest 5G network, here are eight ways your device can become your new sous-chef — on top of being your own personal assistant.

Learn from the pros

Sign up for virtual cooking classes or workshops to sharpen your skills and learn new recipes. Many professional chefs and culinary schools offer a mix of increasingly popular livestreamed or pre-recorded online courses that you can follow from the comfort of your kitchen.

Now trending

As a culinary playground, the internet also serves up tons of viral recipes such as shrimp sushi bake cups and bubble potato pillows.

Cooking recipes are the most popular form of influencer-created social media content, according to a 2024 report from Snap and IPG Magna. They’re as much about fun as they are about the fails (anyone remember raindrop cakes?), so don’t be afraid to grab your apron, fire up your phone and get ready to cook (and maybe giggle) your way through the latest internet food fads.

Tasty apps

Cooking apps are like having a tech-savvy sous-chef who gives you recipe ideas and always knows the right measurements. These apps not only help you get the ratios right but also remind you when to preheat the oven — because who hasn’t forgotten that step?

Not sure where to start? Listen to a pro: Model and influencer Chrissy Teigen, who is also a best-selling cookbook author, food TV host and owner of a cookware line, says her go-to apps are New York Times Cooking, America’s Test Kitchen and Tasty.

If you’re juggling apps while multitasking pans and chopping onions, the new Samsung Galaxy S25 lineup has got your back with cross-action apps. With this function, Google Gemini acts as your personal assistant, letting you knock out multiple tasks with one ask. It’s all about multitasking like a Michelin-star chef.

High tech for low pressure

Samsung’s Galaxy AI, available on the entire S25 lineup, can give you recipe ideas based on what you currently have in your kitchen. Just snap a photo of your fridge or pantry, and Galaxy AI will analyze the ingredients, suggest recipes and give you step-by-step instructions. Cool, right?

And get this — if you find a picture of a beautiful food plate online, Samsung’s updated Circle to Search lets you find the source and even recipes so you can recreate it at home. All it takes is one press and hold and then circling what you’d like to look up. Plus, Galaxy AI lets you easily translate content — like webpages and live phone calls — from different languages. So why not binge on everything from bagels to beignets?

Pump up the jams

Want to set the mood for a legendary culinary concert? Spotify and other streaming platforms can easily suggest a playlist that might just help you make magic. Or, if you prefer podcasts, press play on your favorite foodie show for some culinary inspiration.

Get the perfect pic

Got your masterpiece? Time to show it off — you’ve earned it. Taking pictures of your dishes can turn your kitchen into a mini food photo studio, and all you need is the latest mobile device to do it right. There’s a reason influencers like to say the phone eats first: #Food is the most popular hashtag on Instagram, with more than 250 million posts on the platform.

Pro tip: The Samsung Galaxy S25 phones can spoon-feed you a great photo with portrait-mode shots that rival high-end cameras, adjusting the camera settings for the ideal exposure and clarity, sharpening details and boosting colors after the shot. The Night Video with Audio Eraser feature captures content in vibrant detail, even in low light if you’re cooking for a romantic candlelit dinner, and minimizes unwanted sounds. Plus, get love from your family and friends on your latest kitchen concoctions with RCS messaging, which now allows you to send high-resolution photos and videos more easily across platforms.

Know when to order in

All great chefs have a backup plan, and takeout from delivery apps can go a long way to saving a dinner party. With online food delivery revenues cooking up an estimated $350 billion in the U.S. in 2024, it’s clear you’re not alone, so don’t sweat it if your recipe doesn’t work.

To make your cooking journey truly delicious, don’t forget to explore Samsung’s Galaxy S25 lineup.

Bon appétit!

Shining a Light on Spinocerebellar Ataxia: Raising Awareness for an Overlooked Disease this Rare Disease Day

2025-02-25T07:01:00

(BPT) – A rare disease is a disease, disorder, illness or condition that affects fewer than 200,000 Americans.1 Since rare diseases impact a small number of people, they often remain relatively unknown among the broader population.

In honor of Rare Disease Day, on February 28, 2025, Biohaven, a biopharmaceutical company focused on treatments for diseases with significant unmet needs, is bringing attention to spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA), a rare, progressively debilitating neurodegenerative disease that affects approximately 15,000 people in the U.S. and 24,000 in Europe and the United Kingdom.2

NORD®, the National Organization for Rare Disorders and official partner for Rare Disease Day in the U.S., is calling on the nation to “Show Your Stripes®” to shed light on rare diseases and generate support for all people on a rare medical journey. Amy M., who has lived with SCA for the last eight years, is showing her stripes by sharing her story about living with a rare disease that has no cure or FDA-approved treatment options. According to Amy, living with SCA is like “living in a physical prison that deteriorates your ability to have others understand you.”

Amy, an accomplished lawyer, lived her life unaware of having the disease until she began noticing changes in her body that couldn’t be explained. She started losing her balance, falling a lot and struggled with everyday things like wearing high-heeled shoes and going up and down stairs. “It is jarring, to find what were once seemingly mundane experiences, like climbing stairs or putting shoes on, become some of my greatest physical hardships,” said Amy. “And while the physical challenges that come with SCA are numerous, for me, the mental burden of this disease is what I have the most difficulty coming to terms with. I don’t want to accept the fact I could soon be in a wheelchair, without the ability to write or speak clearly, my independence stolen by SCA. But because there are no treatment options available for me, my only choice is to come to terms with my disease.”

SCA is a devastating disease that impacts all aspects of a person’s life as well as their family. People with SCA experience significant morbidity, including progression to a wheelchair, impaired gait leading to falls, inability to communicate due to speech impairment, difficulty swallowing, and premature death. While signs and symptoms can appear anytime from childhood to late adulthood, SCA typically presents in early adulthood and progresses over a number of years.

SCA is just one of the 10,000 rare diseases that have minimal or no treatment options.1 With 25-30 million Americans living with rare diseases,1 it’s crucial to continue to invest in research that offers hope to people living with diseases with significant unmet need. Biohaven currently has a New Drug Application under review with the FDA for a new treatment candidate for SCA.
