Make moon milks a part of your self-care rituals

2022-04-18T08:01:00

(BPT) – Your well-being is a priority no matter your age, but the busier life gets, the more self-care is often overlooked for other to-do’s. In 2022, there’s a growing movement to refocus on the importance of self-care and incorporate things that bring comfort into your daily routine.

Start shifting your self-care mindset by creating daily rituals that matter to you. Once you carve out time for small moments that matter, you may find yourself happier, calmer and less stressed. It’s important to remember that self-care isn’t selfish; it’s how you can help yourself feel balanced so you can ultimately be your best.

What’s more, self-care doesn’t have to be complicated. Maybe it’s starting your day with prayer or meditation. Perhaps it’s making time after work for a favorite hobby. At night, it could be a relaxing shower or reading before bed. On the weekends, you might make time to move your body by walking through a local park or taking a yoga class.

Food and drinks are also a big part of self-care, especially when they’re wholesome and nutritious. Moon milks are the perfect example, mentioned as a top three beverage trend of 2022 by Mintel Group. Indulgent and delicious, moon milks are steeped in ayurveda, one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems.

Organic Moon Milks by Clover Sonoma makes it easy to enjoy this nutritious and healthful drink every day, because you can simply stock your favorite flavors in your fridge. Each unique blend includes 2% organic milk, herbs and spices to help the body respond to physical and emotional stressors. The infused soothing botanicals help promote relaxation and wellness no matter the time of day.

These colorful drinks delight the eyes as much as they do the palate, making them ideal for self-care rituals. Organic Moon Milks by Clover Sonoma comes in three flavors: Blue Moon (Blueberry Lavender), Pink Moon (Cherry Berry Hibiscus) and Golden Moon (Turmeric Ginger). Make time for yourself by enjoying a chilled cup of moon milk in the morning or a warm mug at the end of a long day. Common misconceptions about U.S. water infrastructure

2022-04-18T08:01:00

(BPT) – Most Americans don’t often think about where their water comes from and how it gets to their taps. When you turn on a faucet, wash clothes or start the shower, you expect water to be there when you need it. However, this is only possible thanks to water utility workers maintaining an aging and complex water infrastructure system to support daily demands.

There are several misconceptions about our nation’s water infrastructure, highlighted by a recent survey titled “Infrastructure, Investment and Resiliency” from American Water. Some of the most common fallacies include:

Misconception: There are thousands of miles of quality pipes in the U.S. water infrastructure.

Reality: Half of Americans underestimate the miles of underground pipes in the U.S. by a million or more. The water infrastructure system in the U.S. is comprised of 2.2 million miles of underground pipes. Americans are largely unaware of just how much work goes into maintaining this complex system that they rely upon every day.

Misconception: The U.S. water infrastructure system needs only minor updates with minimal cost.

Reality: A majority of Americans (56%) estimate the cost of improving the nation’s water infrastructure at $1 billion or less. In reality, the projected cost is $129 billion.

The American Society of Civil Engineers gave the U.S. drinking water infrastructure a C- grade in 2021, highlighting the growing need for improvement to the nation’s system. To address this, the recently passed federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act will invest $55 billion into U.S. water infrastructure. American Water alone has committed an investment of $28 to $32 billion in capital over the next 10 years.

Misconception: Water main breaks are rare.

Realty: Half (53%) of Americans estimate that a water main break occurs every couple of hours or less. In reality, water main breaks occur every few minutes. It’s estimated that this frequency of water main breaks and pipe leaks, due to aging water infrastructure, causes the U.S. to lose approximately 6 billion gallons of treated drinking water every day.

Misconception: Underground pipes have a short lifespan.

Reality: Americans, on average, estimate the lifespan of underground pipes is 48 years. In fact, most pipes that deliver water to homes and businesses across the country have an average lifespan of 75 to 100 years. American Water is committed to replacing infrastructure in their systems much more quickly than the current water utility industry standard, with plans to increase resiliency across the 52,500 miles of pipeline it maintains and operates.

Misconception: Water infrastructure is safe from cybersecurity attacks and supply chain disruption.

Reality: Over three in five Americans are unaware that water infrastructure may be susceptible to cyberattacks and supply chain disruptions (64% and 62%, respectively). Because technology is used in various aspects of water management, cyberattacks are a concern. That’s why American Water has a dedicated team of certified professionals who help maintain the overarching security of informational and operational technology systems; safeguard the physical security of the staff, facilities and assets; and provide emergency response and are ready to adapt if business continuity plans need to be activated.

Misconception: Flushing wipes and cotton products down your toilet and pouring oil or grease down your drain is OK.

Reality: Over two in five Americans don’t know that flushing wipes and cotton products can damage water infrastructure (45% and 43%, respectively). Moreover, 38% of Americans don’t know that flushing cooking fats, oils and grease down the drain negatively impacts the condition of underground pipes and water mains.

Americans can help protect our critical water infrastructure through simple measures such as watching what they put down their sinks and flush down their toilets. By not flushing wipes, paper towels or other items, Americans can help prevent pipe clogs, sewage overflows and damage to infrastructure.

Everyone should be able to enjoy the conveniences of having safe, clean water from their tap when they need it. That’s why it’s important to know the facts about America’s water infrastructure and the actions and investments American Water is taking and making to improve its water and wastewater systems. Put a spring in your step with these energy-boosting tips

2022-04-12T23:01:00

(BPT) – Days are getting longer, temps are warming up, and you have lots of plans — but do you lack the energy to make them happen? After spending winter mostly indoors, it can be tough to transition to the change in seasons. Fortunately, simple meal and snack swaps, plus new approaches to your exercise routine, can help get you moving again.

Here are easy tips to follow to help you feel ready for just about anything this season.

Choose energy-boosting foods

“You can find more effective — and longer-lasting — energy boosters than reaching for additional cups of coffee or a sugary snack,” says Colette Heimowitz, vice president of Nutrition and Education at Simply Good Foods Company. “You’ll notice a big difference in your mood and energy levels just from swapping out high-glycemic carbs with added sugars and refined grains for higher quality, energy-boosting choices like colorful vegetables, low-glycemic fruits and high-fiber whole grains.”

For better long-term energy and nutrition, try:

  • Apples Apples provide filling fiber, vitamin C and antioxidants. Pair an apple with peanut butter or cheese to lessen the glycemic impact.
  • Avocados — These are a great source of heart-friendly monounsaturated fat, plus oleic acid, folate and vitamin E. Have half an avocado as a snack on toasted sprouted bread, or add slices to tossed salad or scrambled eggs. An avocado a day combined with a healthy diet may lower LDL cholesterol.
  • Nuts — Most nuts combine protein, healthy fats and fiber that help you feel full, so you’re less likely to experience energy dips. Aim for up to two one-ounce nut snacks per day, such as topping a serving of full-fat Greek yogurt in the morning or for an afternoon snack.
  • Leafy green vegetables — Spinach is one example, full of nutrients like fiber, iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamins A, C, E and K — plus energy-boosting iron. Add spinach to any egg dish, soup or salad.
  • Fatty fish — Salmon is popular for good reason, as it’s flavorful plus full of protein and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids to fill you up and minimize blood sugar swings.
  • Atkins Iced Chai Protein Shake — For a quick pick-me-up, this ready-to-drink creamy shake is made with real tea and spiced chai flavor. It contains as much caffeine as a cup of tea while delivering protein and fiber, offering a non-coffee alternative for those seeking more protein and energy.

Try this recipe for a protein boost:

Chai Latte Overnight Oats

Ingredients

2 tablespoons quick cooking oats, raw
2 tablespoons hemp hearts
2 tablespoons chia seeds
2 tablespoons coconut, unsweetened, shredded
1 Atkins Iced Chai Protein Shake
1 tablespoon pine nuts, roasted
1 teaspoon coconut, unsweetened, shredded
2 pinches ground cinnamon

Directions

In each of 2 6-ounce jars with lids, mix 1 tablespoon oats, 1 tablespoon chia seeds, 1 tablespoon hemp hearts and 1 tablespoon coconut shreds until evenly combined. Add half the shake (5.5 fluid ounces) to each jar and mix until very well combined. Cover with lids and refrigerate at least 4 hours, or overnight.

Before serving, lightly toast pine nuts in a 400-degree oven for 3 minutes, shaking once halfway through. Top each jar with 1/2 tablespoon roasted pine nuts, 1/2 teaspoon coconut shreds and a pinch cinnamon. Makes 2 servings.

Celebrity makeup artist shares 5 secrets to feeling fresh this spring

2022-04-15T10:25:00

(BPT) – With springtime comes a sense of renewal. Each new season creates an opportunity to check in on your beauty routine and make updates that help you put your best self forward.

“Getting into a spring state of mind isn’t just about good glam,” said celebrity makeup artist Priscilla Ono. “Spring is also the perfect time to refresh your beauty routine.”

Feeling inspired but don’t know where to start? Check out Ono’s top five secrets for feeling confident from head to toe so you can look and feel your best this spring.

1. Hydrate for Good Health!

Staying hydrated is key! Your body needs water to feel and look good. If you’re taking advantage of the warmer weather and getting active outdoors, make a habit of taking a water bottle with you so you can hydrate while you move. For flavor, add some fresh fruit to your water. Snacking on water-rich veggies and fresh fruits like cut-up cucumber, celery or cubed watermelon helps hydrate you too.

“I take a reusable water bottle with me everywhere so that I’m always sipping on water while I’m working or traveling. Staying hydrated keeps my energy up and is good for my skin too,” says Ono.

2. Refresh Your Makeup Kit.

Spring is a great time to take stock of what you need to rotate or replace in your wardrobe, and the same is true for your makeup and personal care products. Toss expired products, swap out warm, muted tones for a bright, energizing color palette, and add fresh scents into your personal care routine. These updates will keep you right on-trend this spring.

An essential in Ono’s makeup kit is the all-new Secret Weightless Dry Spray. The antiperspirant provides 48-hour sweat and odor protection and the aluminum free deodorant provides 24-hour odor protection. Redesigned to give women precision protection with a targeted application that gets more product where it’s needed, the Sprays also go on weightlessly with no waxes, no alcohol and no residue.

“I don’t want a stain or white mark on my clothes while I’m working, and my clients certainly don’t want one when they appear on the red carpet!” said Ono. “Secret Dry Spray keeps me and my clients fresh from morning ‘til night.”

3. Practice Good Hygiene.

It can be tempting to skip your daily shower in favor of getting more sleep before you start your workday. Says Ono, “With early call times that often feel like the middle of the night, it can be hard to resist the temptation to roll out of bed and go straight to work, but I know I’ll feel more refreshed if I take the time to shower and make sure I’m protected with the new Secret Dry Spray.”

Whether you opt for a quick shower or treat yourself to a long bubble bath, antiperspirants and deodorants can help you keep that shower-fresh feeling all day.

4.Get Colorful!

Color blocking is a popular trend this spring. This trend is all about mixing two or more bold and often contrasting colors to create a colorful and eye-catching statement.

“We will see a lot of bright colors and pops of color this spring. Lots of color blocking,” says Ono. “No matter the trend, I always want my clients to feel like themselves and I want their features to shine through.”

Color blocking isn’t limited to just your wardrobe. Ono suggests applying a bright lip in hot pink, orange or even a light pink to contrast with your clothes.

5. Spray Fresh, Stay Fresh!

This spring, find a signature scent that reflects your personality and style. A new antiperspirant or deodorant can be an easy and affordable way for you and your friends to experiment with new scents. The new Secret Dry Spray comes in six fresh scents, including antiperspirants in wild rose, vanilla, waterlily, and white peach, and aluminum-free deodorants in lavender and coconut. Great for use at home or to throw in your bag, each of the Sprays is made with freshness-on-demand technology that delivers moisture- and motion-activated fragrance bursts to help you stay fresh all day long.

“You want to make sure you smell good because scent can really impact a person’s mood. Staying fresh is important to me because it helps me create a sense of confidence and calmness,” says Ono. “I love a nice floral scent because it’s delicate yet really helps you feel fresh and clean. I’m loving the Wild Rose scent in Secret’s new Dry Spray Collection because it is so fresh and inviting.”

2022-04-13T13:01:00

(BPT) – Do you take as much pride in bettering your community as you do in bettering your beard? If so, now’s your chance to put that good grooming toward goodwill.

Men’s grooming leader Wahl is looking to reward guys who are doing good, while looking good. The Wahl ‘Benevolent Beards’ Contest will present one Grand Prize winner with $20,000 for himself and $5,000 for his charity.

“Wahl is dedicated to making the world a ‘bearder’ place,” said Steven Yde, division vice president for Wahl. “What does that mean? We’re making a concerted effort to celebrate and support those with beards who are making the world better. This contest is just one example of how we’re working to spread positivity and goodwill.”

How to enter

From now until June 6, 2022, men with beards can submit a video of themselves either explaining or demonstrating how they support a charity on the contest entry page at https://bit.ly/BenevolentBeards. After the entry period Wahl will select five finalists, and each will win $500 for themselves, and $500 for their charity. In addition, they’ll receive a Wahl Lithium Ion Stainless Steel Trimmer and a starter kit of Wahl’s new Beard Care line.

Things get really exciting in mid-July when public votes help determine which finalist wins the $20,000 Grand Prize and a visit from Wahl’s Mobile Barbershop to do a fundraising grooming event for their charity. At the event, barbers will offer the public free beard trims, and for every trim Wahl will donate $100 to the charity — up to $5,000.

Be inspired

Don’t have a beard? You can still be part of the excitement. Spread the word about the contest to your bearded friends. Vote for your favorite facial-haired finalist. Or, get on the benevolent bandwagon and find ways to volunteer yourself. No matter your talents or interests, there are so many charities that would love your help. This spring: Spring clean your diet in 4 easy ways

2022-04-07T14:01:00

(BPT) – In addition to decluttering your home this spring, why not declutter your diet? We’ve all heard the phrase “clean eating” or eating minimally processed foods and getting rid of the excess “clutter” in the form of added fats, sugars, salt and unnecessary additives. But for some, creating a daily diet made up of only these foods can be intimidating, especially when looking to put a healthy meal on the table at the end of a busy day.

Fortunately, “eating clean” doesn’t have to be daunting. There are plenty of packaged nutritious, wholesome foods like frozen loose pack veggies and fruits, canned tuna, salmon or beans and whole grains like brown rice or whole grain pasta that can simplify preparing meals.

Susan Bowerman, M.S., R.D., CSSD, CSOWM, FAND, senior director of Worldwide Nutrition Education and training at Herbalife Nutrition, shares four ways to clear your diet clutter:

  • Read food labels to help you ditch extra sugar, salt and fat. Check labels for fat, sodium and sugar content, and compare brands to find those with the least amounts. For example, choose plain yogurt and whole grain cereals rather than pre-sweetened and refined products, and look for unsalted or low sodium canned and frozen veggies.
  • Lose the refined starches and up your fruit and veggie intake. Including a fruit or vegetable at every meal can “squeeze out” many of the unwanted foods and ingredients you might otherwise eat. Swap sugary, fatty ice cream for a bowl of berries, or try snacking on baby carrots and hummus instead of chips.
  • Get rid of the calorie clutter in your beverages. Between sugary sodas, fruit juices, alcoholic beverages and fancy coffee drinks, many people take in hundreds of calories a day from beverages alone. Plain tea is a great alternative because it can be drunk hot or cold, has virtually no calories, and has natural compounds that may offer some health benefits.
  • Clear the clutter from your fridge, freezer and pantry. Fill your pantry with high-fiber whole grains (like 100% whole wheat pasta, bread, cereals and flour, and foods like quinoa, millet and brown rice). Buy beans and canned tomatoes for soups, stews and pasta. Stock your refrigerator and freezer with plain fruits and veggies and nonfat or low-fat dairy products. And keep canned tuna or salmon, frozen fish filets or chicken breasts to add protein to your quick, healthy meals.

A Lupus Patient’s Journey Living with the Disease

2022-04-07T08:01:00

(BPT) – This content was sponsored by GSK. Nadine is a real patient who was on treatment at the time of these interviews. GSK paid for her time and expenses in sharing her unique experiences. Individual results may vary.

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can cause inflammation and pain in any part of your body. For the 1.5 million people in the U.S. who have lupus, it can feel draining and overwhelming.

Yet, for 36-year-old Nadine of Wilton Manners, Florida, self-care helped her cope with her disease. Talking openly with her doctor and finding a treatment plan that works for her has improved her health and ability to manage lupus.

“I was diagnosed with lupus at age 21. I was at work when I noticed my hands were swelling, red, and hurt a lot. I had never experienced pain like that before so I went to the ER. Shortly after that, I was back in the ER again with a butterfly rash on my face. I took the ER doctor’s advice and saw a rheumatologist, who diagnosed me with lupus. In hindsight, I realize I had lupus symptoms even before my first ER visit,” adds Nadine.

What is Lupus?

The immune system is like a bodyguard against invaders, such as viruses, bacteria, and other germs. But in individuals with lupus, the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own healthy tissues. Inflammation caused by lupus can affect many different body systems, including the joints, skin, blood cells, brain, heart, and lungs. Lupus can also cause the immune system to attack and inflame the kidneys. When this happens, it’s called lupus nephritis (LN). Approximately 40% of people living with lupus develop lupus nephritis.

Anyone can develop lupus. However, nine out of 10 people with lupus are female. Women ages 15-44 are at a higher risk.

Like Nadine, people with lupus often have a long journey before they are diagnosed. Because there is no one test for lupus, getting a diagnosis can be difficult. Often it is like putting a puzzle together. A health provider will need to keep track of the person’s symptoms and look at their medical history. Diagnosing and treating lupus early are vital to control the disease and reduce the risk of long-term organ damage. Three factors contribute to organ damage: persistent disease activity, severe flares, and the prolonged use of steroids.

Originally, Nadine’s doctor started her on steroids. The steroids helped in the short-term to relieve her symptoms, but Nadine learned that steroids can cause weight gain and raise the risk of organ damage. In fact, as many as half of people with lupus experience permanent organ damage within five years of diagnosis. Organ damage can lead to additional health complications and even early death. Because LN damages the kidneys, up to 20% of people with LN will develop end-stage kidney disease after 10 years.

Five years after her initial diagnosis, Nadine was in the hospital from a severe flare of her lupus. “I was then diagnosed with lupus nephritis,” said Nadine. “After three years suffering with LN, nothing seemed to work. I had lost hope. I asked my doctor for a different treatment, and he told me about BENLYSTA® (belimumab). After one year of adding BENLYSTA, I started to feel relief from my disease activity.”

In a clinical study in Black patients with lupus, a reduction in disease activity was seen but was not statistically significant. Ask your doctor about BENLYSTA.

BENLYSTA is a prescription medicine, given intravenously (IV) or subcutaneously, for adults with active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus) or active lupus nephritis on other lupus medicines. BENLYSTA IV is approved in children aged 5 years and older with SLE on other lupus medicines. It is not known if BENLYSTA is safe and effective in people with severe active central nervous system lupus.

Do not receive BENLYSTA if you are allergic to belimumab or to any of the ingredients in BENLYSTA.

BENLYSTA can cause serious side effects, some of which may cause death. BENLYSTA may increase the risk of a serious and life-threatening brain infection (PML) and certain cancers. Tell your doctor right away if you have infections, allergic reactions, mental health problems, suicidal thoughts, and recent or planned vaccinations.

Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, fever, stuffy or runny nose and sore throat, persistent cough, trouble sleeping, leg or arm pain, depression, headache, and injection site reactions. These are not all the possible side effects of BENLYSTA.

Please see full Important Safety Information below and full Prescribing Information.

Adding BENLYSTA

Lupus patients who are on treatment may still experience flares. It’s important that patients talk with their doctors about managing their lupus. Adding BENLYSTA to their treatment plans may help. Clinical trials have shown it reduced lupus disease activity, reduced the risk of severe flares and reduced steroid use by 25% or more.* First approved in 2011, it is the first and only approved biologic for both lupus and LN in more than 50 years and has more than 10 years of clinical evidence.

Nadine is passionate about helping to encourage other people who are living with lupus. She shared this message for her fellow lupus warriors: “You may get to a point where you think you can’t go on or you can’t handle lupus anymore, but you can. You are so much stronger than you think you are. Even though it will be difficult, you have to find some kind of joy or purpose in life. It is there. You just have to be willing to find it.”

To learn more about lupus and Benlysta, visit www.benlysta.com.

* Compared to other lupus medicines alone.
† A reduction of steroid dose was seen but was not statistically significant.

Important Safety Information

Do not receive BENLYSTA if you are allergic to belimumab or to any of the ingredients in BENLYSTA.

Treatment Hope for People with Bipolar I Disorder Symptoms

2022-04-06T14:01:00

(BPT) – Paid for by AbbVie

Matt Poldrugach, 44, is the owner of a Texas-based electric company and has been living with his bipolar I disorder diagnosis for several years. Matt believes it is more important than ever to have an open dialogue with your healthcare providers and loved ones to help reduce the stigma of living with bipolar I disorder and ensure people in similar situations have access to the resources, treatment and support they need.

Bipolar I depression symptoms can appear similar to the symptoms of major depressive disorder, including hopelessness, fatigue, extreme sadness and changes in appetite or weight. Manic symptoms, however, are specific to bipolar I disorder and can leave someone wired with racing thoughts and higher than usual energy levels. If you, like Matt, are diagnosed with bipolar I disorder, you’re familiar with unpredictable high and low mood swings that you experience during manic and depressive episodes.

It’s impossible to predict how long these mood episodes may last. You might be severely depressed for a brief or extended period of time before entering into a manic episode. You may even experience manic and depressive symptoms at the same time, which is known as a mixed episode.

As Matt knows, it can feel isolating to have bipolar I disorder, but it’s important to know you are not alone and there are treatment options available. Studies suggest that bipolar I disorder could affect around 3 million Americans at some point in their lives. Experts agree that effective treatment plans for people living with bipolar I often include a combination of medication, talk therapy, support groups, and improving overall health and wellness.

“I think there’s still quite a bit of a stigma, especially with bipolar,” Matt says. “I think some people might have perceptions that all patients with bipolar I disorder are violent and have uncontrollable actions, and that’s unfair.”

Exploring treatment options

Matt worked closely with his healthcare team to develop a treatment plan to help control his bipolar I symptoms. Like many people with bipolar I, it took Matt some time to find the right treatment for him.

“Finding the right treatment plan for you on your bipolar I journey is not easy – it’s difficult,” said Matt. “Don’t give up on yourself, work with your doctor, and listen to the advice of your healthcare providers to find a treatment that works for you.”

Many people with bipolar I disorder require medication as part of their treatment plan along with therapy and support groups. If you need help controlling your bipolar I symptoms, it’s important to ask your doctor about available treatment options.

Matt is greater than his bipolar I and so are you.

Through his journey to find an effective treatment to help manage the extreme highs and lows of his bipolar I, Matt started a medication called VRAYLAR® (cariprazine). VRAYLAR is a prescription medication approved to treat depressive episodes that happen with bipolar I disorder (bipolar depression) in adults and for the short-term (acute) treatment of manic or mixed episodes that happen with bipolar I disorder in adults. After his psychiatrist decided to prescribe him VRAYLAR, Matt notes that it helps him manage his bipolar I disorder symptoms, “Finding VRAYLAR has been a relief. It has helped smooth my ups and downs of bipolar I,” he says.

For more information about a treatment option, visit VRAYLAR.com. VRAYLAR is not right for everyone. Only your doctor can decide if VRAYLAR is right for you. Individual results may vary. IMPORTANT RISK INFORMATION

What is the most important information I should know about VRAYLAR?

Elderly people with dementia-related psychosis (having lost touch with reality due to confusion and memory loss) taking medicines like VRAYLAR are at an increased risk of death. VRAYLAR is not approved for treating patients with dementia-related psychosis.

Antidepressants may increase suicidal thoughts or actions in some children and young adults within the first few months of treatment and when the dose is changed. Depression and other serious mental illnesses are the most important causes of suicidal thoughts and actions. Patients on antidepressants and their families or caregivers should watch for new or worsening depression symptoms, especially sudden changes in mood, behaviors, thoughts, or feelings. This is very important when an antidepressant is started or when the dose is changed. Report any change in these symptoms immediately to the doctor.

VRAYLAR may cause serious side effects, including:

  • Stroke (cerebrovascular problems) in elderly people with dementia-related psychosis that can lead to death
  • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS): Call your healthcare provider or go to the nearest hospital emergency room right away if you have high fever, stiff muscles, confusion, increased sweating, or changes in breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure. These can be symptoms of a rare but potentially fatal side effect called NMS. VRAYLAR should be stopped if you have NMS
  • Uncontrolled body movements (tardive dyskinesia or TD): VRAYLAR may cause movements that you cannot control in your face, tongue, or other body parts. Tardive dyskinesia may not go away, even if you stop taking VRAYLAR. Tardive dyskinesia may also start after you stop taking VRAYLAR
  • Late-occurring side effects: VRAYLAR stays in your body for a long time. Some side effects may not happen right away and can start a few weeks after starting VRAYLAR, or if your dose increases. Your healthcare provider should monitor you for side effects for several weeks after starting or increasing dose of VRAYLAR
  • Problems with your metabolism, such as:
    • High blood sugar and diabetes: Increases in blood sugar can happen in some people who take VRAYLAR. Extremely high blood sugar can lead to coma or death. Your healthcare provider should check your blood sugar before or soon after starting VRAYLAR and regularly during treatment. Tell your healthcare provider if you have symptoms such as feeling very thirsty, very hungry, or sick to your stomach, urinating more than usual, feeling weak, tired, confused, or your breath smells fruity
    • Increased fat levels (cholesterol and triglycerides) in your blood: Your healthcare provider should check fat levels in your blood before or soon after starting VRAYLAR and during treatment
    • Weight gain: Weight gain has been reported with VRAYLAR. You and your healthcare provider should check your weight before and regularly during treatment
  • Low white blood cell count: Low white blood cell counts have been reported with antipsychotic drugs, including VRAYLAR. This may increase your risk of infection. Very low white blood cell counts, which can be fatal, have been reported with other antipsychotics. Your healthcare provider may do blood tests during the first few months of treatment with VRAYLAR
  • Decreased blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension): You may feel lightheaded or faint when you rise too quickly from a sitting or lying position
  • Falls: VRAYLAR may make you sleepy or dizzy, may cause a decrease in blood pressure when changing position (orthostatic hypotension), and can slow thinking and motor skills, which may lead to falls that can cause fractures or other injuries
  • Seizures (convulsions)
  • Impaired judgment, thinking, and motor skills: Do NOT drive, operate machinery, or do other dangerous activities until you know how VRAYLAR affects you. VRAYLAR may make you drowsy
  • Increased body temperature: Do not become too hot or dehydrated during VRAYLAR treatment. Do not exercise too much. In hot weather, stay inside in a cool place if possible. Stay out of the sun. Do not wear too much clothing or heavy clothing. Drink plenty of water
  • Difficulty swallowing that can cause food or liquid to get into your lungs

Who should not take VRAYLAR?

Do not take VRAYLAR if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Get emergency medical help if you are having an allergic reaction (eg, rash, itching, hives, swelling of the tongue, lip, face or throat).

What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking VRAYLAR?

Tell your healthcare provider about any medical conditions and if you:

  • have or have had heart problems or a stroke
  • have or have had low or high blood pressure
  • have or have had diabetes or high blood sugar in you or your family
  • have or have had high levels of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, or triglycerides; or low levels of HDL-cholesterol
  • have or have had seizures (convulsions)
  • have or have had kidney or liver problems
  • have or have had low white blood cell count
  • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. VRAYLAR may harm your unborn baby. Talk to your healthcare provider about the risk to your unborn baby if you take VRAYLAR during pregnancy. If you become pregnant or think you are pregnant during treatment, talk to your healthcare provider about registering with the National Pregnancy Registry for Atypical Antipsychotics at 1-866-961-2388 or
    http://www.womensmentalhealth.org/clinical-and-research-programs/pregnancyregistry/
  • are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known if VRAYLAR passes into breast milk. Talk to your healthcare provider about the best way to feed your baby during treatment with VRAYLAR

Tell your healthcare provider about all medicines that you take, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and supplements. VRAYLAR may affect the way other medicines work, and other medicines may affect how VRAYLAR works. Do not start or stop any medicines while taking VRAYLAR without talking to your healthcare provider.

What are the most common side effects of VRAYLAR?

  • The most common side effects were difficulty moving or slow movements, tremors, uncontrolled body movements, restlessness and feeling like you need to move around, sleepiness, nausea, vomiting, and indigestion.

These are not all possible side effects of VRAYLAR.

Thriving with Heart Failure: One Woman’s Advice

2022-04-06T12:17:00

(BPT) – More than 6 million people in the U.S. are living with heart failure, including Angel, a 56-year-old mother of three from Charleston, SC. Symptoms are different for everyone, but before her diagnosis Angel was often short of breath. Something as simple as turning over in bed at night made her feel like she would suffocate, and what should have been a happy family moment became scary for Angel and her family.

“We were so excited to take my daughter on college tours, but a big wakeup call came during one visit when walking up a flight of stairs left me feeling like my heart was going to explode,” recalled Angel. “That’s when I knew I had to take action and see a doctor.”

Heart failure represents a significant, growing disease burden in the U.S., with more than 8 million cases expected by 2030. It is becoming increasingly prevalent due to the aging population. If you’ve recently been diagnosed, consider the following tips from Angel that can help you to thrive with heart failure:

  • Knowledge is Power: After her diagnosis, Angel struggled to find information or support for people living with her specific type of heart failure, called heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).

Angel suggests that others should “do your research and speak up. I was shocked to learn that HFpEF is predicted to become the most common type of heart failure in the U.S., and I struggled to come to terms with what the diagnosis meant for me and my family. Knowledge is power, and the more research I did, the more confident and empowered I felt advocating for my care.”

  • Do the Work: “I learned that there’s no quick fix for people living with heart failure, but there are ways to feel your best. Work with your doctor to figure out how you can best manage your overall health,” she says.

For Angel, who is also living with type 2 diabetes, that meant going to cardiac rehab – which is a combination of exercise and education designed to improve heart health – adjusting her diet, and taking a medication called Jardiance® (empagliflozin) that is approved to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease. Just recently, Jardiance was approved to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure in adults with heart failure.

  • Connect with Others: Navigating life with heart failure can be difficult physically, emotionally, and mentally. “My family is very supportive, but it was also important to me to connect with others living with heart failure, and it’s had such a positive impact on my outlook. I encourage others to find a group that fits their support needs,” Angel says.

Find an advocacy organization that can connect you with your peers and also offer education and resources to help you through your journey.

Talk to your doctor about symptoms of heart failure you may be experiencing, and about available treatment options like Jardiance, or visit www.Jardiance.com for additional information.

What is JARDIANCE?

JARDIANCE is a prescription medicine used to:

  • reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure in adults with heart failure, when the heart cannot pump enough blood to the rest of your body
  • reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes who also have known cardiovascular disease
  • lower blood sugar along with diet and exercise in adults with type 2 diabetes

JARDIANCE is not for people with type 1 diabetes. It may increase their risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (increased ketones in the blood or urine).

JARDIANCE is not for use to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes who have severe kidney problems, because it may not work.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

Do not take
JARDIANCE if you are allergic to empagliflozin or any of the ingredients in JARDIANCE.

Do not take JARDIANCE if you are on dialysis.

JARDIANCE can cause serious side effects, including:

  • Ketoacidosis (increased ketones in your blood or urine). Ketoacidosis is a serious condition which needs to be treated in the hospital. Ketoacidosis may lead to death. Ketoacidosis occurs in people with type 1 diabetes and can also occur in people with type 2 diabetes taking JARDIANCE, even if blood sugar is less than 250 mg/dL. Ketoacidosis has also happened in people with diabetes who were sick or who had surgery during treatment with JARDIANCE. Stop taking JARDIANCE and call your healthcare provider right away or go to the nearest hospital emergency room if you get any of the following symptoms, and if possible, check for ketones in your urine:
    • nausea
    • vomiting
    • stomach-area (abdominal) pain
    • tiredness
    • trouble breathing
  • Dehydration. JARDIANCE can cause some people to become dehydrated (the loss of body water and salt). Dehydration may cause you to feel dizzy, faint, light-headed, or weak, especially when you stand up. Sudden worsening of kidney function has happened in people who are taking JARDIANCE.

You may be at a higher risk of dehydration if you:

    • take medicines to lower your blood pressure, including water pills (diuretics)
    • are on a low salt diet
    • have kidney problems
    • are 65 years of age or older

Talk to your healthcare provider about what you can do to prevent dehydration, including how much fluid you should drink on a daily basis, and if you reduce the amount of food or liquid you drink, if you are sick or cannot eat, or start to lose liquids from your body from vomiting, diarrhea, or being in the sun too long.

  • Serious urinary tract infections. Serious urinary tract infections can occur in people taking JARDIANCE and may lead to hospitalization. Tell your healthcare provider if you have symptoms of a urinary tract infection, such as a burning feeling when passing urine, a need to urinate often or right away, pain in the lower part of your stomach or pelvis, or blood in the urine. Sometimes people also may have a fever, back pain, nausea or vomiting.
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia): If you take JARDIANCE with another medicine that can cause low blood sugar, such as sulfonylurea or insulin, your risk of low blood sugar is higher. The dose of your sulfonylurea or insulin may need to be lowered. Symptoms of low blood sugar may include:
    • headache
    • drowsiness
    • weakness
    • dizziness
    • confusion
    • irritability
    • hunger
    • fast heartbeat
    • sweating
    • shaking or feeling jittery
  • Necrotizing fasciitis. A rare but serious bacterial infection that causes damage to the tissue under the skin in the area between and around your anus and genitals (perineum). This bacterial infection has happened in women and men who take JARDIANCE, and may lead to hospitalization, multiple surgeries, and death. Seek medical attention immediately if you have fever or are feeling very weak, tired or uncomfortable (malaise), and you develop any of the following symptoms in the area between and around your anus and genitals: pain or tenderness, swelling, and redness of skin (erythema).

  • Vaginal yeast infection. Talk to your healthcare provider if you have vaginal odor, white or yellowish vaginal discharge (discharge may be lumpy or look like cottage cheese), and/or vaginal itching.
  • Yeast infection of the penis. Swelling of an uncircumcised penis may develop that makes it difficult to pull back the skin around the tip of the penis. Talk to your healthcare provider if you have redness, itching or swelling of the penis, rash of the penis, foul smelling discharge from the penis, and/or pain in the skin around the penis.
Talk to your healthcare provider about what to do if you get symptoms of a yeast infection of the vagina or penis. Your healthcare provider may suggest you use an over-the-counter antifungal medicine. Talk to your healthcare provider right away if you use an over-the-counter antifungal medication and your symptoms do not go away.
  • Allergic (hypersensitivity) reactions. Symptoms of serious allergic reactions to JARDIANCE may include:
    • swelling of your face, lips, throat, and other areas of your skin
    • difficulty with swallowing or breathing
    • raised, red areas on your skin (hives)

If you have any of these symptoms, stop taking JARDIANCE and contact your healthcare provider or go to the nearest emergency room right away.

The most common side effects of JARDIANCE include urinary tract infections and yeast infections in females.

These are not all the possible side effects of JARDIANCE. For more information, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Before taking JARDIANCE, tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions, including if you:

  • have kidney problems
  • have liver problems
  • have a history of infection of the vagina or penis
  • have a history of urinary tract infections or problems with urination
  • are going to have surgery. Your healthcare provider may stop your JARDIANCE before you have surgery. Talk to your healthcare provider if you are having surgery about when to stop taking JARDIANCE and when to start it again
  • are eating less or there is a change in your diet
  • have or have had problems with your pancreas, including pancreatitis or surgery on your pancreas
  • drink alcohol very often, or drink a lot of alcohol in the short term (“binge” drinking)
  • have type 1 diabetes. JARDIANCE should not be used to treat people with type 1 diabetes
  • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. JARDIANCE may harm your unborn baby. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you become pregnant during treatment with JARDIANCE
  • are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed. JARDIANCE may pass into your breast milk and may harm your baby. Do not breastfeed while taking JARDIANCE

Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Especially tell your healthcare provider if you take water pills (diuretics) or medicines that can lower your blood sugar, such as insulin.

You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch or call 1-800-FDA-1088.
