It’s almost game time: 5 tips for a winning tailgate party

2023-10-09T07:31:00

(BPT) – Your favorite time of year — football season! — has finally arrived, and it’s time to huddle up and get ready for your best-ever tailgate party. No matter how well your favorite team does this year, you can count on having a blast if you follow these tips to enjoy all the pre-game action with your family and friends.

1. Tighten up your game plan

While it may sound fun to just get everyone together and fly by the seat of your pants, the truth is a good game plan goes a long way to ensuring everyone has an epic time. Well before the big day, spend some time checking items like:

  • The weather forecast: This can help you not only decide how many layers you might need to wear, but also whether to pack extra ice and cold drinks or some thermoses of hot cider and cocoa!
  • Stadium rules: Make sure you know the rules and regulations, and share them with your team. Know what’s permitted to bring to the venue, how early you can arrive before the game (the earlier, the better!) — and scope out a parking lot map to pick some prime real estate, ideally with a little shade.
  • Draft players: Assign friends to help out by bringing more food, ice, coolers, extra napkins and wipes, plastic bags, etc. — as long as people know their assignments, you’ll have enough of everything you need.
  • Your lineup: Counting how many people are coming can help you make decisions about food and drink quantities, plus the right amounts of plates, cups and silverware.

2. Satisfy their appetites

You can make it super easy for yourself — and please the whole crew — by putting HORMEL GATHERINGS® Party Trays at the top of your tailgate party shopping list. Whether you choose the Honey Ham and Turkey Party Tray or the Hard Salami and Pepperoni Party Tray, you’ll have the most convenient collection of tasty, satisfying snacks to please everyone at your tailgate party. HORMEL GATHERINGS® Trays are versatile and delicious for any occasion, and they’re made with premium meats and cheeses the whole gang will love.

Even better, they’re the epitome of easy entertaining, because they’re ready to eat and easy to serve, requiring no cooking, cutting or assembling — just open a tray and enjoy. You can pair them with your favorite bread, fruits, veggies, dips or sauces to create endless combinations. They’re also available in different sizes and varieties to suit different needs and preferences. From small snack trays to large party trays, from classic meat and cheese trays to supreme trays with olives — packing a few of these in your tailgate cooler will guarantee your day is a hit.

3. Quench their thirst

Be sure you pack your cooler with plenty of cold drinks for your guests — including enough non-alcoholic options to keep everyone well hydrated, and for your designated drivers. Careful cooler packing can ensure you have enough for everyone. Remember to fill a thermos or two of hot drinks if the temps are getting chilly.

4. Bring on the fun and games

Include plenty of fun activities for everyone to enjoy during your shindig. You can bring along classic yard games like beanbag toss and horseshoes (or make up your own!), plus face-painting supplies for the diehard fans, a football or two to throw around, upbeat music to jam to — and some portable outdoor seating for when people need to chill and relax.

5. Leave time for cleanup

Make sure you have enough time for cleaning everything up before kickoff time. Bringing plenty of trash bags along and assigning team members for the assist will make cleanup a breeze — so you’re ready to go and enjoy the game!

Before your next tailgate party, family get-together — or just to have on hand in case friends drop by — check out the tasty possibilities at Hormel.com.

Elevate your virtual learning: 4 powerful tips to thrive in the world of online high school

2023-10-09T05:01:00

(BPT) – Online learning has been around for a while, but, since the pandemic, more and more families have shifted to this educational model. The flexibility that online learning provides for busy families is appealing to many, but it isn’t a fit for all students.

“People were aware of online learning before, but the pandemic forced many to embrace it,” said Dr. Rafe Mazzeo, Ph.D., a professor of mathematics at Stanford University. “A lesson I learned during that time is that, not only do the teachers have to be very well prepared to teach online, but the students have to buy into the idea of learning online too.”

When middle and high schoolers are invested in their education, an online program can give them opportunities they may not otherwise be able to access in a traditional brick-and-mortar school, and allow them to thrive in ways in-person learning falls short.

If you and your child are considering switching to an online program, it’s important to know what’s needed to succeed. Stanford Online High School, founded in 2006, has been teaching students virtually for almost two decades, and understands online education’s unique benefits and challenges. Here are the school’s four essential tips for students to make the most of their online learning experience.

1. Establish a routine

One of the enticing aspects of online high schools is flexibility. Online schooling programs with synchronous (or real-time) classes offer a more flexible schedule than traditional in-person schooling. However, if your student struggles without structure, online school may not be the best learning environment.

Help your child succeed by working with them to establish a daily routine that balances class time, study sessions, extracurricular activities, socializing, and downtime. Creating and sticking to a consistent routine will help your middle or high schoolers better manage their time, stay organized, decrease stress, and reduce their risk of falling behind.

2. Create a dedicated learning workstation

Just because students can take class from their bed, couch, dining room table, or kitchen counter doesn’t mean that they should. Having a dedicated learning space in your home that is used only for attending online classes and studying is essential to thrive in an online educational program.

Collaborate with your student to create a comfortable workstation that is free of distractions and has the necessary supplies to do their work. Establishing a study space will help your student get into a focused mindset so they can excel in their classes.

3. Stay organized

In-person and online learning both require your student to practice excellent organizational skills to succeed. Staying organized can also curb procrastination and reduce stress.

Whether your middle or high schooler prefers digital tools, paper planners, or a combination of both, ensure they have the necessary materials and apps to set them up for success. Help them choose calendars, notebooks, or digital platforms that can help them take notes and keep track of class schedules, assignments, and due dates.

4. Actively engage in class

It’s not enough to simply attend online classes. It is crucial that your student is actively participating in class. Active engagement enhances your student’s understanding of the material, and can help them feel more connected to their school’s community while in a virtual environment.

Encourage your student to make the most of their time in class and take advantage of opportunities to meet with their teachers. If they are confused with a topic or need extra support, encourage them to reach out to their teachers for guidance.

Joining a worldwide educational community

In addition to students and parents investing time and discipline, it is important to find an online educational program built to give your student the best experience possible. When searching for an online school, consider Stanford Online High School, the leader in online education since 2006.

At Stanford Online High School, students in grades 7-12 learn the essential skills to become global citizens and make lasting connections with other students around the world. Following a traditional August-June academic year, students may attend full-time and seek a high school diploma, or enroll in just one or two courses.

The coursework challenges students at every level, as they learn from instructors with expertise in their fields of teaching. Students engage with their instructors and peers in synchronous class sessions, and participate in over 100 clubs, local meetups with classmates, and other school activities. One winemaker’s journey to creating a bold wine with a rich history

2023-10-08T09:01:00

(BPT) – Growing up in the heart of Napa Valley, Laura Orozco is intimately familiar with what makes a great wine. In fact, it’s in her blood. “My family is originally from Mexico,” said Orozco. “My father came to the U.S. in the early ’70s to work in the vineyards and follow the ‘golden path’ to give us a better future.”

Orozco’s father broke his back working in the vineyards; however, that didn’t stop him from pursuing his dream. His dedication and love for wine is evident in his daughter’s work.

Following the golden path

For nine years, Orozco has worked as the assistant winemaker at Chimney Rock Winery, a world-class winery led by Elizabeth Vianna, who took Orozco under her wing. Orozco’s reputation and passion for producing high-quality cabernet sauvignon caught the attention of Bill Terlato, President and CEO of Terlato Wine Group, who invited her to lead the winemaking functions for this new brand, Paso D’Oro.

Paso-D’Oro is the Spanish phrase for “way of gold,” which pays tribute to Orozco’s family journey. The name also evokes the California sunshine that paints the golden hills and valleys of the Paso Robles landscape and represents the people drawn to the Golden State.

This appointment is an honor for any winemaker, but especially a Latina winemaker like Orozco. According to Travel + Leisure Magazine, only 14% of California wineries are led by women, although that number is growing. Although the odds were stacked against her, Orozco followed her father’s golden path and created a bold new cabernet sauvignon with grapes grown in Paso Robles, California.

A trendy region for fine wines

Situated between Los Angeles and San Francisco on California’s central coast, USA Today named Paso Robles the best U.S. wine region in 2023, and it’s not hard to see why. According to Wine Tourism, this trendy wine region is responsible for more than 35% of all wine production in California. It’s become a new hub of wine tourism and has drawn many talented winemakers like Orozco.

The region’s warm, dry climate and fertile soil allow many grape varietals to thrive, including syrah, zinfandel, chardonnay, pinot noir and — most notably — cabernet sauvignon. Orozco has worked hard to secure fruit from some of the best vineyards in Paso Robles and carefully select plots that consistently grow grapes to produce a luxury cabernet sauvignon.

Orozco said the region’s hills and valleys remind her of the ups and downs everyone faces in life. Paso D’Oro’s evocative cobalt and gold packaging pays homage to these pastoral hills and includes an artistic topographical rendering of the American Viticultural Area (AVA).

Paso-D’Oro’s inaugural vintage is bold, approachable and balanced, with pure layers of red fruit and hints of warm spice. The wine received high praise from Wine Enthusiast Magazine and was highlighted as an Editor’s Choice wine in its first year on the market. This cabernet delivers the same luxury as an expensive wine from Napa or Sonoma at an affordable suggested retail price of $29.

Orozco believes this wine is suitable for any occasion. “You can drink it with your friends and family over dinner or serve it at a wedding. No matter when or where you drink it, I hope you find joy.”

With fentanyl fears rising in schools nationwide, leading organizations team up to raise awareness of prescription drug safety

2023-10-06T08:01:00

(BPT) – New digital curriculum to guide teachers and educate youth about dangers of misusing prescription medication

Prescription Drug Safety: Know the truth, a free digital school curriculum released in September 2023, is aiming to educate youth about the dangers associated with misusing prescription drug medications, including counterfeit drugs containing fentanyl. The course from the nationally recognized, evidence-based youth tobacco and opioid prevention truth® campaign and EVERFI® from Blackbaud®, the leader in powering social impact through education, aims to equip students with essential knowledge to protect themselves and others from the risks associated with both prescription drug misuse and fentanyl.

Overdose deaths by counterfeit pills more than doubled from 2019 to 2021, and over half of the people who died were age 35 or younger, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid, was involved in 84% of the more than 2,200 cases of reported adolescent drug overdose deaths that occurred during that same time span. Young Americans are especially vulnerable to misunderstanding the risks associated with opioid misuse, addiction, and the dangerous spiral down from prescription to illicit use. Schools play an important role in reaching students with the facts they need to make informed choices, and middle and high school educators are increasingly focused on facing the growing crisis.

“With fentanyl-related deaths rising at an alarming rate amongst teens, proper education to raise awareness about the prevalence of counterfeit fentanyl pills, the potential for accidental overdose, and the importance of avoiding experimentation with illicit substances altogether is critical,” said Ray Martinez, President and co-founder of EVERFI. “It has never been more urgent or important that we provide resources to students around this topic so we can gain the upper hand in fighting the opioid crisis.”

Course expected to reach 250,000 students nationwide this school year

Prescription Drug Safety: Know the truth is an expansion of the free digital course that has already reached more than one million learners nationwide since launching in 2017. Two new lessons address the proliferation of counterfeit pills and drug trafficking on social media platforms, guiding students on how to keep themselves safe in such situations and how to report social media drug trafficking. Through real-world scenarios delivered in truth’s authentic peer-to-peer voice, students can better understand the growing youth fentanyl crisis and how to support others in situations involving prescription drug misuse and overdose. The curriculum is expected to reach 250,000 middle and high school students nationwide during the 2023-24 school year.

The refreshed course also includes updates to the program’s look and feel, provides current research into prescription drug misuse, and complies with the latest Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. In consultation with educators, these updates will improve course content and provide students with the tools needed to make informed decisions, seek help for themselves or a peer, and understand the potential consequences of prescription drug misuse.

“Our organization brings years of expertise in developing youth-facing public health messaging, and we’re honored to put those efforts towards addressing the urgent fentanyl and prescription drug misuse crisis affecting young people across the nation at alarming rates,” said Amy Taylor, Chief of Community Engagement of Truth Initiative, the organization behind truth. “Building on our evidence-based ‘Vaping: Know the truth’ curriculum, which has already been used by nearly one million students to date, we’re excited to see ‘Prescription Drug Safety: Know the truth’ have a similar impact.”

A recent study of Prescription Drug Safety: Know the truth showed strong evidence that this type of digital curriculum showed a positive impact on behavioral intent and attitudes as it relates to prescription drug use across all genders, races, and other demographic characteristics.

Campaign proven to increase knowledge about opioid misuse

This marks the second collaboration between Truth Initiative and EVERFI following the Vaping: Know the truth curriculum, which provides students with facts on the health risks of e-cigarettes and nicotine use. It also offers resources to help young people who are currently using e-cigarettes to quit through truth’s first-of-its-kind text message quit vaping program, This is Quitting, which has inspired more than 644,000 youth and young adults to quit vaping nicotine. Since the curriculum’s launch, a total of 800,000 students have actively engaged with the course, and it is being used by more than 9,000 schools nationwide. Peer-reviewed research shows that Vaping: Know the truth significantly improved middle and high school students’ knowledge about e-cigarettes, and beginning in January 2024, the curriculum will include a module on cannabis vapes.

Using its proven-successful tobacco prevention strategy — giving young people the facts and empowering them to make their own decisions — Truth Initiative developed the Emmy Award-winning The Truth About Opioids campaign, which effectively increased knowledge about opioid misuse, decreased stigma, and increased the likelihood to seek out and share information in young people. Published findings studying the campaign’s effectiveness underscore the importance of public education and prevention — alongside emergency response, treatment, and recovery — in the comprehensive effort to combat the crisis.

“Given the devastating consequences of the opioid epidemic,” wrote the authors of the study, “now is the time to mount a comprehensive prevention effort to help reduce opioid misuse among young people.”

Schools and students can learn more and sign up for the Prescription Drug Safety: Know the truth course at https://everfi.com/courses/k-12/prescription-drug-safety-high-school/.

Bow to Wow – America’s Top 10 Shelter Dog Makeovers

2023-10-05T10:39:00

(BPT) – Zen was rescued from a horrendous hoarding case. She arrived at the shelter with mange that required regular medicated baths and had severe damage to one of her eyes. Thankfully, after extensive grooming and care, the little pup went from sick, to healthy, to spunky in no time. Zen’s triumphant story continued when she was named America’s top shelter dog makeover in the 2022 Dirty Dogs Contest. Her story stands as proof that proper care can transform a dog’s life in more ways than one. The sad truth, however, is that less than half the dogs entering shelters each year are getting the necessary grooming they need. That’s why pet industry leader Wahl and Greater Good Charities, a global nonprofit, have partnered again for the 12th annual Dirty Dogs Contest. Wahl donated grooming supplies to rescues and shelters nationwide, and they in turn shared amazing Before and After grooming photos — including the Top 10 Shelter Dog Makeovers of 2023. Vote for your favorite pup and help the organization affiliated with the dog win $10,000.

1. Cookie arrived at the shelter in Wichita, KS, as a stray with severe mats on his ears, legs and chest. With the help of an expert dog groomer, they removed around two pounds of fur, revealing his true beauty. He’s now thriving in his new home and living his best life.

2. Fluffy
was abandoned in an apartment in Allentown, PA, and discovered in deplorable condition. She was filthy and matted when the police brought her into the shelter. A full groom revealed her to be a beautiful one-eyed girl with a permanently outstretched tongue. Several weeks after arriving at the shelter, Fluffy was adopted by a loving family.

3. Homer
was found under a house during construction in Nashville, TN, along with two other adult dogs and two puppies, all suffering from mange. Thanks to the care they got at the shelter, the ‘Simpson’ family is now healthy and furry. Although Homer is mature in age, he’s youthful in spirit, cherishes affection and wears a perpetual goofy smile. He is still excitedly waiting for a family to guide him through life’s adventures.

4. Foxy
was discovered living under a trailer park mobile home in Marshfield, WI. Humane officers contacted Foxy’s owners and persuaded them to surrender the pup to the shelter. As soon as she arrived, she was promptly pampered with a luxurious grooming and bath. A happy pup was revealed under all that matted and dirty fur, and it didn’t take long for her to find a forever home with a lovely couple and her new canine brother.

5. Jamie
was rescued from a serious hoarding and neglect situation in Oakland Park, FL. After receiving a much-needed grooming and bath, she felt and looked like a brand-new dog. Jamie is incredibly grateful and happy to be a clean, thriving puppy, free of mats and grime. With her incredible makeover complete, Jamie is now ready for adoption and can’t wait to settle in with a loving family.

6. Luke
was found wandering aimlessly without a home or identity in Tioga, PA. He was so dirty and matted, his face wasn’t visible. In fact, when he was finally bathed and groomed for the first time, he needed anesthesia to remove the mats on his legs and belly. This scruffy pup was transformed into the handsome gentleman he was meant to be. Thankfully, Luke now knows exactly where he belongs — with his loving forever family.

7. Mattie
was found abandoned in a hotel parking lot in Hailey, ID. Her owner, a homeless woman, asked police to surrender her to the shelter in the hopes she would get better care. After being assessed by a medical team, it was discovered Mattie had more than 40 pounds of mats, and other health issues. But after a week of care, Mattie found her forever home and became a beloved companion, enjoying car rides, vacations and cuddles.

8. Mirage
arrived at her shelter in Mason, MI, as a severely matted little Shih Tzu. The shelter staff used fear-free grooming techniques to ensure Mirage’s experience was as stress-free as possible. And after shaving him down, they discovered an emaciated little guy with injuries to his eyes from the mats and burns on his feet from urine. Despite everything, he’s a happy pup who absolutely loves people. Not surprisingly, Mirage was quickly adopted and is happily living in his forever home.

9. Scar
was spotted in a social media post about a severely scabies-infested dog by a Fresno, CA, area shelter staff member. Initially unrecognizable due to his condition, it was determined Scar was a small Pomeranian mix. Rescuers suspect he contracted a disease from previous living conditions, but after receiving medication and baths his rash healed. As his skin health improved, so did his demeanor — today Scar is a completely new dog.

10. Madeline
was found in Whitestone, NY, as a stray in deplorable condition. She suffered from an extreme case of mange, with skin that appeared as though it had been singed off. Blood and pus oozed from her wounds, causing her significant pain. Rescuers healed her wounds and provided her with love and care she had never known. Madeline now has her forever family, is living happily in the city and now goes by Milly.

The Founder of Nissin Foods

Everyone has a special place in their hearts and space in their bellies for ramen. Whether it’s a quick snack or a hearty meal, there’s one man you can thank for bringing instant ramen to the world: Momofuku Ando.

Ando had a mission to provide affordable, delicious and convenient food options for people worldwide, which led to the creation of Nissin Foods in 1958. On an early trip to the U.S., Ando noticed Americans curiously eating forkfuls of noodles out of cups, instead of using bowls and chopsticks. With that simple observation, the worldwide Cup Noodles phenomenon was born.

After expanding into the U.S. in 1972, Top Ramen became the first instant ramen manufactured and sold in America. This changed American food culture and household pantries nationwide, and it’s all because of Ando, the father of instant noodles.

Four tips to help celebrate Hispanic Heritage

2023-10-05T08:01:00

(BPT) – From music, food, art and beyond — there are countless contributions that Hispanic and Latin Americans have made to the United States. Celebrating Hispanic American Heritage is just one great way to honor your roots and the people who have enriched the nation’s multicultural fabric!

New York Times bestselling cookbook author and Mexican chef Pati Jinich shares a few activities you and your family can participate in to help celebrate and learn more about Hispanic American Heritage and culture.

1. Explore Hispanic American community events

Celebrate with your community by checking local calendars to see what events are happening in your area. You may notice that there are many different Hispanic heritage festivals or parades happening—attending these events with friends or family is a great way to enjoy lively celebrations while learning more about your local Hispanic American neighbors!

2. Take traditional dance classes

Sign up for a salsa, bachata or flamenco dance class with a partner, a group of friends or a family member. If you’re unfamiliar with traditional Hispanic dancing, try looking for a beginner or intro class at a local dance studio; that way you can immerse yourself in a rich cultural experience while also having fun!

3. Support local Latin- and Hispanic-owned businesses

Purchasing from small Latin- or Hispanic-owned businesses is not only a great way to contribute to your community, but it’s also an opportunity to discover unique products and services that you might not find elsewhere. Supporting these businesses goes beyond just a simple transaction; it has a deeper socio-economic impact that can be very empowering for minority business owners.

4. Try new recipes and cook with Hispanic flavors

Vibrant flavors define Latin cuisines, and trying new recipes with these flavors will allow you to enrich your culinary repertoire and deepen your appreciation for this diverse culture. Need inspiration? Try this Roasted Salsa Verde Chilaquiles with Eggs and Pickled Onions from Eggland’s Best.

The recipe features Eggland’s Best eggs, which contain 25% less saturated fat and more than double the Vitamin B12 compared to ordinary eggs, which provides a natural energy boost and helps support a balanced diet and healthy heart.

Roasted Salsa Verde Chilaquiles with Eggs and Pickled Onions

Ingredients:

  • 12 Eggland’s Best Large Eggs
  • 12 5-inch corn tortillas
  • 1 cup red onion slivered
  • Juice of 2 limes
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 1/2 pounds green tomatillos husked and rinsed
  • 1/4 of a large white onion, cut into large chunks
  • 1 jalapeno chile
  • 2 garlic cloves, unpeeled
  • 1 cup coarsely chopped cilantro leaves, divided
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil plus more for brushing tortillas
  • 1 teaspoon kosher or sea salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/2 cup queso fresco or cotija or substitute with Farmer’s cheese or mild feta, crumbled
  • 1/4 cup Mexican cream

To prepare the tortilla chips:

1. Heat the oven to 325 degrees. Cut the tortillas into triangles, and place on a tray. Lightly brush with oil, sprinkle salt. Bake in the oven until crispy, about 15 to 20 minutes, flipping once in between. Let the pieces cool.

To prepare the pickled onions:

2. In a small bowl, mix the red onion with the lime juice, olive oil and salt to taste.

To prepare the roasted salsa verde:

3. Place the tomatillos, onions, garlic and chile on a baking sheet. Set under the broiler and char for 6 to 8 minutes, flipping once in between, until tomatillos are soft, juicy and all the ingredients look charred.

4. Remove from the oven. Peel the garlic cloves, stem the chile and add along with the rest of the ingredients to the blender along with 3/4 cup of the cilantro and a teaspoon of salt and puree until smooth.

5. Heat a tablespoon of vegetable oil in a saucepan set over medium heat. When the oil is hot, add the sauce from the blender and cook over a medium simmer until the sauce thickens and seasons, another 5 to 6 minutes.

6. Meanwhile, set a small skillet over low heat. Once hot, add a few drops of oil. Once the oil is hot, crack the eggs two at a time into the skillet and season with salt and pepper.

7. Cover with a lid and cook until desired doneness (about 4 minutes for sunny side up eggs with runny yolks and set egg whites).

8. When the sauce is hot, quickly but carefully add the tortilla chips. Stir the tortillas into the mixture so that they are fully coated with the sauce.

9. Serve the tortillas and salsa in individual plates, with a pair of cooked sunny side up eggs on top, garnished with a bit more salsa verde, a drizzle of Mexican cream, crumbled queso fresco, pickled onions and fresh cilantro.

Let these four tips provide inspiration to help you explore and honor the dynamic spirit and enduring impact of Hispanic American culture!

4 tips for a healthier Halloween

2023-10-04T23:01:00

(BPT) – Candy, sweets and seasonal treats — it’s officially dessert season, and you may be starting to think about how you’ll stay on track with your nutrition goals this year. While there’s nothing wrong with a little indulgence, it can be overwhelming when the kids bring home their overflowing bags of candy.

“We’re coming up on several months of holidays and it’s so fun to celebrate with our favorite candy and treats,” says Kristin Kirkpatrick, M.S., registered dietitian and Quest endorser. “But there can be too much of a good thing, so it’s important to take some proactive steps to stay on track while also enjoying yourself.”

Kirkpatrick is dishing out her tips on how to make this year’s trick-or-treat season festive while sticking with healthy behaviors when it comes to candy and sweets.

1. Watch out for “snack-sized” portions.

A “fun-sized” or “snack-sized” piece of candy may seem harmless, but a common misconception is that this smaller candy is healthy for you, according to Kirkpatrick. However, even a snack-sized candy bar is high in sugar. And because they’re small, you may be tempted to eat several pieces, sometimes even more than a standard-sized serving. Instead, be mindful. Keep track of how many snack-sized treats you eat to ensure you’re not overindulging.

2. Opt for smart swaps.

Choosing a candy option that has more protein and isn’t packed with sugar and net carbs, such as the Quest Chocolatey Coated Peanut Candies, can allow you to stick to your nutrition goals while still enjoying a sweet treat. With 10 grams of protein and 1 gram of sugar per serving, this treat delivers the crunch, sweetness and might help “scare” away the candy cravings you might experience during Halloween. If you prefer traditional candy, choose a kind that has a little fiber (such as nut-based candy). This can help fill you up quicker, meaning you may eat less overall.

You can also stock up on healthier options for snacks and treats for your kids — and yourself. For example, you can find snack servings of popcorn, pretzels, cheddar crackers, trail mix and dried fruit.

3. Fuel up before trick-or-treating.

Before you head out the door for a night of spooky fun and candy hunting, be sure to serve your family a nutritious, balanced meal with protein and fiber. This can help your kids feel full and energized and may prevent them from overindulging on sweets later in the night.

4. Share your sweets with others.

After a long night of trick-or-treating, sit down with your kids and help them go through their stash. Have them pick out a few of their favorite candies, then talk to them about the benefits of sharing and allow them the opportunity to give to others. Ask your local food pantry or shelter to see if they are accepting Halloween candy. This can help your family make healthy choices after Halloween while also donating to a good cause.

If you’re not able to donate the treats, consider freezing it for later or using it for baking during the holiday season.

Consider these tips to make managing Halloween candy in your house a little easier this year. And for more sweet swaps, check out questnutrition.com.

One man’s transformative journey losing 100-plus pounds

2023-10-03T14:37:00

(BPT) – Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and for Brad Roberts, Chief Operating Officer of LifeMD, one such twist was his unexpected weight gain after the loss of his father. However, his story is one of determination, resilience and ultimately, transformation.

Roberts, still fit from his athletic college days and now a dedicated father of four, found solace in food during his late 30s after his father passed away. “My father was my best friend,” said Roberts. “When I lost him, I started avoiding my life and internalized my sadness through eating.” His weight spiraled, leading to a loss of confidence and a dramatic change in lifestyle.

Roberts decided to make a change when he realized the impact his weight was having on his family — his greatest priority. He was missing from family photos due to a self-consciousness about his appearance, and friends and family were noticing his weight gain. He realized he wasn’t setting the healthy example he wanted for his children.

Roberts decided to participate in a weight management program. Using LifeMD’s strong affiliated clinical network, combined with GLP-1s, a class of medications used for weight loss and diabetes management, Roberts embarked on the weight loss journey that has since transformed his life.

In his first month, Roberts lost 24 pounds. As he continued, his weight loss accelerated, and by June, he was down 60 pounds. As of this writing, Roberts has lost a total of 125 pounds, taken 12 inches off his waist, and decreased his Body Mass Index (BMI) from 41 to 28. While greatly exceeding the 15% average annual weight loss results of most GLP-1 users, Roberts attributes his incredible results to both GLP-1 medication and lifestyle changes, with the combination of the two creating an upward spiral of momentum.

Throughout his weight loss journey, Roberts faced challenges, like the fear of injecting a medication and the frustration of not seeing immediate results. The real-time, actionable direction by LifeMD affiliated providers was pivotal. For example, at the start of his journey, Roberts was hitting a weight loss plateau, so he reached out to his care team. In talking about his eating habits, it quickly became apparent he needed to fuel his body to avoid a metabolic slowdown. Opting for protein shakes, grilled chicken, and apples while ensuring appropriate caloric intake, he was down six pounds before the end of the week.

Losing weight wasn’t just about improving physical health for Roberts; it was also about rebuilding his confidence and his relationships. He wanted to be an active, present father who participated in family photos, coached his kids’ sports teams, and attended important events without feeling self-conscious.

Roberts’ transformation has been so profound he’s inspired his family and close friends to join the program. His journey demonstrates that with the right support, medication, and determination, significant weight loss is within reach for many Americans.

Roberts’ story is one of overcoming personal adversity, re-establishing self-confidence, and reclaiming the joys of life. It’s about living the life you’ve imagined for yourself and your family. “For the first time in five years, I am standing next to my children in photos and I feel confident, I feel the difference,” said Roberts. “Making a change is possible with the right team, the right medication and the right support behind you.” It’s a story that proves that it’s never too late to make a change for the better.

Sustainability is more than recycling: The importance of understanding product lifecycle

2023-10-03T09:01:00

(BPT) – Looking for sustainable packaging when shopping is an important step for reducing your environmental footprint. For many people, this means seeking packaging that is recyclable. While that’s an important element of sustainable packaging, it’s only one part.

You can make a bigger impact and support the well-being of the earth, as well as the people and communities involved in producing products, by understanding a product’s full lifecycle. So, what else should you consider when comparing packaging?

1. Material sourcing

Beyond what materials are used, it’s important to ask where the materials come from and how they are sourced. How can you know material sourcing is done responsibly? Some brands go through extensive evaluations to be certified by reputable third-party organizations. Here are a couple of labels you can look for and feel confident the packaging you are purchasing is responsibly sourced:

Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) label: FSC® is an independent, non-governmental forest certification standard. When you purchase FSC®-labeled products, you’re helping forests and the people that rely on them thrive by supporting zero deforestation, fair wage and work environment, community rights and protection of plant and animal species.

Bonsucro Chain of Custody label: The Bonsucro Chain of Custody Standard relates to the supply of sugarcane, including all stages from feedstock production up to consumption. This certification provides assurance that sustainability claims can be tracked along the supply chain, including responsible sourcing and ethical trading of sugarcane, which can be used to produce a plant-based plastic material in place of traditional fossil-fuel based plastics.

2. Renewable, plant-based materials

Renewable plant-based materials are better for the environment because they can be replenished over time and enable a move away from fossil fuel–based materials. Plus, you can feel good that renewable resources are natural resources, which will replenish the portion depleted through consumption. Examples of renewable materials you are likely to see on a store shelf include:

Paper from responsibly managed forests: All Tetra Pak® cartons use paperboard from trees sourced from FSC®-certified forests and other controlled sources. On average, a Tetra Pak carton consists of 70% paperboard, a renewable plant-based material.

Plastics made from plant-based materials: Plant-based plastics look and perform the exact same as their fossil fuel–based alternative. Look for the Bonsucro logo, which demonstrates responsible sugarcane management.

3. Protection of the product

Good packaging helps protect the product, which is particularly important for foods and beverages. This helps ensure you don’t get sick and helps reduce food waste. Globally, food waste is responsible for 8% of greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

When shopping, look for packaging that helps to extend shelf life without a negative impact on nutrition. For example, foods and drinks in shelf-stable cartons from Tetra Pak are treated using UHT (ultra heat treatment). When combined with the company’s shelf-stable packaging, products ranging from dairy milk to chicken broth are safe and delicious for long periods of time without the need for additives, preservatives or refrigeration before opening.

Bonus: In addition to minimizing food waste, shelf-stable packaging does not require refrigeration. This minimizes energy consumption that would otherwise be used to support a refrigerated distribution chain.

4. Recyclability

Once a package has fulfilled its purpose, what happens at the end of life? Ideally, it can be recycled. When shopping, look for a recycling logo on the package.

Many packages are considered widely recyclable and can be placed in your curbside bin. Keep in mind, though, some packages are not yet recyclable everywhere, so you may see a recycling logo with additional qualifications such as: Recyclable where facilities exist, or, with specific instructions on where to return the item to be recycled.

To prevent litter, reattach caps or push straws into a package before you place them in the recycling bin.

5. Carbon impact

In addition to understanding a product’s lifecycle, some package changes can reduce the overall carbon footprint. For example, the carbon emissions of a package with renewable, plant-based plastics are less than the same package with plastic made from traditional fossil fuel–based materials.

Check the packaging or a brand’s website for information about the carbon footprint of the package. For example, Carbon Trust™ offers a “Reducing CO2 Packaging” certification for brands to include on-pack that demonstrates a move toward a package with a lower carbon impact.
