Busting 5 myths on common barriers to higher education

2025-01-15T09:01:00

(BPT) – The high cost of tuition in traditional higher education settings leads many potential students to question the value of that investment. Whether you’ve just graduated high school or you’re a working adult aiming to enhance your career, you may be wondering what you can expect if you decide to advance your education with an undergraduate or graduate degree or certificate.

The good news is, there are more opportunities than ever before to help you get a degree online around your schedule — or start by taking individual courses designed to help you upskill in a variety of fields. For example, through Colorado State University Global (CSU Global), you can access dynamic, flexible and affordable career-relevant bachelor’s, master’s and certificate programs in a wide range of fields, designed for working adults and post-traditional learners.

As the first 100% online, institutionally accredited public university in the U.S., CSU Global is focused on student success as their top priority. As part of the Colorado State University System, CSU Global sets the standard for quality and innovation in higher education through expert faculty recognized as industry leaders and trained in working with adults in an online learning environment.

CSU Global offers information about its programs to help combat 5 common myths that could be holding you back from achieving your educational and career aspirations.

Myth no. 1: A degree isn’t worth the money

This myth is pervasive; Pew Research recently found that almost one-third (29%) of adults said the cost of a four-year college degree is not worth it. While it’s understandable that rising tuition costs at many schools can cause concern, the truth is that for many careers today, some level of higher education gets you a great return on investment (ROI). According to the CSU Global 2024 ROI Survey of 1,185 undergraduate and graduate students, a significant increase in income was achieved by students after completing their programs, among other benefits.

For example, undergraduate alumni self-reported that:

  • Over 92% of them are currently employed.
  • 77% hold a position in their field or a related field of study.
  • Their median income increased by 4% to 58%, depending on the program.

Graduate alumni self-reported that:

  • 94% are currently employed.
  • 83% hold a position in their field or a related field of study.
  • Their median income increased from 30% to 83%, depending on the program.

As a bonus, for those who decide to go to CSU Global, there are no fees, and their tuition lock guarantee means what you pay on day one will be the same for your final course.

Myth no. 2: I don’t have time to go back to school

A four-year degree can seem like a huge investment in time, especially for traditional programs that require putting your life on hold to attend school in person full-time. In fact, a study by the Strada Education Foundation revealed that over half of prospective students of all ages (56%) would be more likely to enroll in a degree program if the school offered flexible scheduling.

To make school possible for working adults and those with family obligations, CSU Global provides the flexibility busy working students need to complete their degrees. Students can complete their classwork at their own pace, on their own time and from the comfort of their own homes — or wherever they have access to an internet connection. The CSU Global online format allows students to balance education with both their work and family commitments. In addition, CSU Global’s programs include accelerated 8-week courses that start every four weeks, and students can start and stop as they choose. In fact, a CSU Global student can take up to 12 months off and retain their student status with no penalty, which is ideal for working adults and parents who may have conflicting seasonal commitments.

Myth no. 3: I can’t work and pursue a degree at the same time

The truth is a majority of students are also currently working, whether full or part-time. According to the Lumina Foundation, 64% of college students work and about 40% of them work full time, somehow managing to juggle all the demands on their time.

Because of the flexibility of 100% online degree and certificate programs, online institutions like CSU Global offer a variety of avenues to achieve your educational goals, even while you’re working. In addition, many businesses today encourage their employees to pursue upskilling opportunities to keep themselves and their companies competitive, so it’s worth asking your supervisor or HR department about incentives, accommodations or tuition assistance benefits available from your workplace. This could help you save money and get the approval to maximize flexible scheduling when needed. For those who are worried about work deadlines conflicting with coursework deadlines, CSU Global students enjoy a generous late policy that allows assignments to be completed a week late with no grade penalty.

Myth no. 4: Online degree programs aren’t as good or as relevant as in-person programs

In fact, students are increasingly attending online degree programs, leading them to be more widely accepted everywhere. The most recent available data from the National Center for Data Statistics reveals that 26% of students in 2022 were studying exclusively online, and that number has only increased. Global Market Insights estimates that e-learning will grow by 14% between 2023 and 2032, and Upskillwise claims enrollment in online programs has risen every year over the last decade.

The key to identifying the most relevant, high-quality online program is finding an accredited institution that addresses the skills and knowledge you’re looking for, and researching their instructors, majors and certification programs. You can confirm whether any institution is accredited through the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

If you’re looking to learn and develop the most up-to-date, in-demand skills for your field, it’s important to know that CSU Global degree programs are designed in collaboration with industry experts, and use job data to determine the knowledge and capabilities those industries and fields require. The courses offer career-relevant coursework and assignments that can be shared with colleagues and supervisors in the workplace.

Learners also gain experience using the tools they need to be successful in their new positions. CSU Global offers program pathways that include embedded internship opportunities, to allow learners to gain work experience while earning collegiate credit. And if you’re interested in pursuing industry certification exams to further your career, CSU Global helps prepare students to take third-party exams, leading to certifications and licensures valued by employers.

Myth no. 5: I won’t get to interact with experienced instructors in an online program

If you’re concerned about the actual college experience during a fully online program, you may be interested to hear that 81% of student respondents report online learning is better than or equal to on-campus learning, according to BestColleges.com. To ensure that your experience is equally positive, research the instructors in your field at any program you’re interested in, and ask about opportunities you’ll have to interact with them throughout your education. You’ll want a program that encourages student-instructor interactions via individual virtual meetings plus email, phone and other platforms so all your questions are answered, and that you’ll get the most out of each class.

Courses at CSU Global are taught by qualified instructors with academic credentials and industry experience in their areas of expertise who provide workplace insights. In addition to serving as subject matter experts and industry leaders, they’re also trained to understand and meet the needs of online students. Faculty are available to students via email, phone or virtual meetings to answer questions, and they have a 24-hour response time. Faculty also post messages to the class via the online portal and interact with students weekly in Discussion Boards and through feedback on Critical Thinking Assignments.

In addition to the valuable interaction students will have with their skilled and knowledgeable instructors, CSU Global provides fully online, comprehensive academic and career services including tutoring, writing consultations, career counseling, resume and cover letter assistance, and support from a dedicated financial aid advisor.

LinkedIn’s top 3 hiring tips for small businesses in 2025

2025-01-15T08:01:00

(BPT) – If you’re a small business owner, you may be looking for top talent in the new year. A new survey by LinkedIn finds 66% of small businesses in the U.S. are planning to hire more in 2025 than they did in 2024. It signals good news for the market, and for your business, but with an increase in hiring comes increased challenges.

That’s because hiring the perfect fit for a small company is crucial and time consuming. It’s not just about finding the right skills and experience for the job, but culture fit, too. It takes time to source candidates, sift through resumes, schedule and conduct interviews, and handle all hiring-related tasks, on top of managing the day-to-day demands. As a small business owner, you know that on any given day, you can be operations manager, accountant, marketing pro and one-person HR department all rolled into one.

“We know every hire a small business makes is critical to their business goals,” says LinkedIn’s Director of Product Management Andrew Chimka. “They need simple, time-saving solutions that are intuitive to use and help them find qualified candidates fast, and with confidence.”

Here are LinkedIn’s top tips to help small businesses find the right candidate so they can focus on doing what they love most: growing their business.

Showcase what makes your company unique

Showcasing your brand is critical to attracting top talent. Emphasize why job seekers should choose to work for you by highlighting your unique company culture, flexible work hours, or perks like employee discounts. You know what makes your company a great place to work. Potential hires need to know it, too.

Demonstrating benefits like skills development opportunities or online learning programs will also help hirers attract candidates in the new year. New LinkedIn data finds opportunities to learn new, in-demand skills is the #1 factor professionals say will help them grow in their career.

One of the ways you can stand out is through LinkedIn’s new Premium Company Page offering, which helps small businesses grow their audience and credibility on LinkedIn. Premium helps companies like yours grow page followers 6.7 times faster to stand out to prospects.

Consider a skills-based hiring approach

Today, the skills needed to do many jobs are changing. More businesses are recognizing the need to adopt a skills-based hiring approach: hiring for skills and abilities, not only degrees and past job titles.

A skills-based approach allows you to widen your pool of applicants to include candidates that may have slipped under the radar due to factors like whether they have a degree. This allows you to find new, untapped talent, lessening the need to compete with other companies for the same candidates.

Taking a holistic approach to skills by hiring for technical expertise and soft skills, such as communication and collaboration, also enables small businesses to identify well-rounded candidates who can support various business needs.

Just because the size of a business is small doesn’t mean its talent pool needs to be.

Use new LinkedIn AI hiring tools to help post a job and hire!

LinkedIn finds that 72% of hirers at small businesses in the U.S. say they are spending up to 15 hours a week just sifting through applications. That’s a lot of time not devoted to growing and running the business.

This is where AI can come in — as a tool to take on some of the heavy lifting that comes with hiring the right candidate.

LinkedIn is launching an AI-assistant within LinkedIn Jobs, built on its unique professional platform insights of over 1 billion members, 69 million companies and 41,000 skills. Hirers can get help with tedious hiring tasks using the AI-assistant, such as drafting job descriptions, posting a job, identifying qualified candidates and inviting them to apply.

The AI-assistant then helps evaluate applicants based on the hirer’s qualifications and creates a shortlist of the most qualified candidates for the hirer to review so they can make the right hire with confidence. Small businesses like Hestus, Givers, and Part and Sum are already using it today.

In today’s fast-changing work landscape, small businesses face numerous challenges — but hiring shouldn’t be one of them. LinkedIn, with the largest engaged professional network in the world, is uniquely positioned to help. In fact, 86% of small businesses globally get a qualified candidate within 24 hours of posting a job on LinkedIn. By leveraging innovative strategies to attract top talent, from highlighting your brand to using new AI tools, your small business will be better positioned to thrive in 2025.

Reclaim your kitchen space: New refrigerator design reduces clearance constraints

2025-01-13T08:27:00

(BPT) – If you live in a home or apartment with minimal kitchen space due to its wall and cabinet configurations, you probably know how challenging it is to replace major appliances. For example, most newer refrigerators are designed with larger kitchens in mind, so they simply won’t fit in smaller kitchen spaces. This leaves you without many options unless you’re willing to undergo a complete kitchen renovation.

Looking for another solution to your small kitchen dilemma? You’re in luck. With the new LG Counter-Depth MAX™ Refrigerator with Zero Clearance™ (LF24Z6530S), you no longer have to worry about your refrigerator sticking out beyond your current counters or not being able to fully open the doors. And even better, you’ll be able to enjoy a stylish, contemporary design that’s built for today’s living, available in stainless steel to complement various kitchen styles. In addition, its restyled bar handles and the freezer pocket handle combine for easy opening and an attractive look.

The Counter-Depth MAX™ Refrigerator with Zero Clearance™ features an innovative zero clearance hinge system and 45% thinner doors that take up less space (compared to previous LG Counter-Depth MAX model LRYKC2606), letting you install the refrigerator in tight spaces and still fully open both doors.* This reduces the need for extra space while maximizing the refrigerator’s square footage and achieving a sleek, built-in look — without the cost of a built-in.

A contemporary solution for minimal kitchen spaces

If you’ve had to opt for older, smaller refrigerators in the past simply to cope with your limited kitchen space, you’ve probably been frustrated not only by the minimal storage offered by these fridges, but also their complete lack of modern features and technology.

However, the LG Counter-Depth MAX™ Refrigerator with Zero Clearance™ gives you the best of both worlds: You’ll appreciate the sleek design that will complement any kitchen, and you’ll also enjoy the larger interior than traditional counter-depth models. At the same time, you’ll benefit from its advanced cooling technology, which will give you the cutting-edge performance you expect from today’s models.

For example, this refrigerator offers Smart Cooling Plus™ Technology, which will maintain the optimal temperatures and humidity needed for enhanced food freshness. The Slim SpacePlus® Ice System also increases the shelf and door bin space, and the dual ice makers automatically create three types of ice: standard ice cubes, crushed ice and slow-melting round Craft Ice™ — so you can have plenty of ice on hand when you need it for entertaining large parties. You can even automatically increase its ice production with just a touch of the control panel, or through the LG ThinQ® app on your smartphone.

You can feel confident in your choice, because LG is ranked the #1 appliance brand in the U.S.** Discover how to achieve the sleek style you’ll love for your kitchen while also getting the storage space you need from LG’s largest-capacity Zero Clearance™ refrigerator at LG.com.

*For optimal performance, LG recommends 0.16 inches (4 mm) clearance between the sides of the refrigerator and the wall.

60% of Americans feel confident about reaching their financial goals

2025-01-10T09:31:00

(BPT) – Retirement is a journey, and every milestone counts: New Empower research shows that Americans across generations are making progress toward retirement, from building emergency funds to paying off debt. While each generation faces unique financial challenges, many share a strong sense of optimism about their financial futures.

Key takeaways

  • Optimism prevails: 60% of Americans feel confident about reaching their financial goals, with Millennials leading at 63%.
  • Money moves: Nearly half of Americans (47%) have successfully paid off their debts, 40% have achieved homeownership, 39% have established an emergency fund, and 32% have started securing retirement savings.
  • Retirement reality check: Americans aim to retire at 62 but expect they may work until 70. Rising living costs (70%), insufficient savings (50%), inflation (48%), and unexpected financial emergencies (39%) are among the common factors contributing to adjusted timelines.
  • Through the ages: Americans aim to purchase a home by 38, build an emergency fund by 40, pay off debt by 42, achieve financial independence by 46, and accumulate retirement funds by 47.
  • Planning for success: Nearly half of Americans (49%) have a clear financial plan to meet their money goals.

Progressing toward financial goals

Unretired Americans are making headway on key financial goals, with nearly half (47%) having paid off debt and 40% achieving homeownership. Many are also building a financial cushion — 39% have established an emergency fund, while 32% have started securing retirement savings.

For those still working toward these milestones, optimism is high. Sixty percent believe they will reach their goals, with Millennials (63%) being the most confident. On average, Americans aim to accomplish their financial milestones at specific ages: purchasing a home by 38, building an emergency fund by 40, paying off debt by 42, achieving financial independence by 46, and securing retirement funds by 47.

Nearly half of Americans (49%) have a clear financial plan to meet these targets, including 49% of Millennials and 50% of Gen Z. Still, 32% recognize they need a structured plan, particularly among Gen X (37%).

Planning for retirement

Some 73% believe they’ll retire at the age they envision, although 27% still express concerns about timing. This sentiment varies slightly by generation, with Gen Z (28%) and Millennials (27%) most likely to feel this uncertainty, followed by Gen X (26%) and Baby Boomers (11%).

To bolster their retirement plans, most Americans (67%) are focusing on reducing or eliminating debt, and many (63%) are supplementing their income with multiple jobs. Among younger generations, 68% of Gen Zers have taken on side hustles to help save for retirement, while 24% of both Millennials and Gen Zers are considering job changes for higher salaries.

Almost half of Americans (48%) are confident they’ll maintain their current lifestyle in retirement, with Gen Z (51%) being the most optimistic. Setting realistic goals and making intentional financial decisions — like minimizing debt, pursuing additional income, and securing higher wages — can empower Americans to retire on their own terms and enjoy the lifestyle they envision.

Navigating retirement setbacks

Most Americans (54%) are on track to retire as planned, though some feel they have to delay an average of 6 to 8 years due to economic factors like rising living costs (70%), insufficient savings (50%), inflation (48%), and unexpected financial emergencies (39%). On average, Americans are targeting an average retirement age of 62 but anticipate they may work until around 70.

For those concerned about the potential impact of job instability, 49% are mindful of how an unexpected layoff might affect their retirement plans. This concern is shared across generations, with Gen X (52%), Millennials (48%), Gen Z (47%), and Baby Boomers (26%) reporting varying degrees of worry.

Building an emergency savings fund, regularly reviewing your retirement plan, and adjusting your budget as needed can help you stay on track. Seeking advice from a financial planner can also offer extra security and flexibility to navigate unexpected challenges.

6 Doctor-Approved New Year’s Resolutions for Better Health in 2025

2025-01-10T08:01:00

(BPT) – As we turn the page to a new year, many of us are writing our list of resolutions. While grand goals like “lose weight” or “eat healthier” often take center stage, these can quickly feel like a mountain too steep to climb, leaving many of us overwhelmed before we even begin. This year, it’s time to flip the script on those common lofty resolutions and, instead, prioritize small, purposeful changes that can offer real and tangible health benefits.

Dr. Vontrelle Roundtree, family practitioner and Associate Chief Medical Officer from MD Live by Evernorth, weighed in with six health resolutions for the new year, designed to be simple, actionable tips that can make a meaningful impact on your well-being.

1. Take your sick days seriously

We’ve all been there—pushing through work or errands despite feeling under the weather. However, ignoring your body’s signals can backfire, prolonging recovery and increasing the risk of health complications. In fact, studies have found that a lack of rest can affect how fast you recover when you get sick. So, in 2025, take the time to prioritize healing over hustle.

Doctor’s orders: “Resting when you’re ill helps your immune system work more effectively and reduces the spread of infections to colleagues or loved ones,” says Dr. Vontrelle Roundtree, Associate Chief Medical Officer for MD Live by Evernorth, a virtual care provider. “Taking sick days is essential to protecting your health and those around you.”

2. Schedule (and keep) your annual checkup

Your yearly checkup is a key part of preventive health, yet many people skip it unless they’re feeling sick. Routine exams can identify potential health problems early, leading to better outcomes in the long run.

Doctor’s orders: “An annual physical isn’t just a box to check,” explains Dr. Roundtree. “It’s an opportunity for your doctor to spot potential issues in your health, like rising blood pressure or early signs of chronic conditions, that might otherwise go unnoticed.”

3. Trust your ‘Ill-tuition’

Your body has a way of signaling when something’s off with your health — also known as your “ill-tuition” — but all too often people ignore those early signs and delay seeking care.

Doctor’s orders: “Many patients dismiss symptoms until they become unmanageable,” Dr. Roundtree explains. “However, delaying care can lead to a worsening of symptoms. Trusting your ill-tuition and acting on it early can make all the difference for a timely diagnosis and treatment.”

4. Make mental health non-negotiable

Mental health often takes a backseat to physical wellness, but the two are deeply interconnected. Research suggests that untreated mental health issues, such as anxiety or depression, can lead to physical symptoms like chronic fatigue, digestive problems, and even an increased risk of heart disease.

Doctor’s orders: “Unaddressed mental health issues can have a ripple effect on your overall well-being,” says Dr. Roundtree. “Simple practices like mindfulness, journaling, or regular therapy sessions can significantly improve your resilience and reduce stress levels.”

5. Expand your social circle
Loneliness doesn’t just take an emotional toll; it’s a documented health risk. According to recent studies, chronic loneliness can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and dementia, among other health concerns. A robust social network, on the other hand, can reduce stress, promote healthier behaviors and even increase lifespan.

Doctor’s orders: “Humans thrive on connection,” Dr. Roundtree expressed. “Joining a group, reconnecting with old friends, or simply scheduling regular social activities can provide a meaningful boost to your health.”

6. Learn your family’s medical history
Taking the time to understand your family’s health history can offer critical insights into your own health. These insights can help your doctor take proactive measures if necessary, such as earlier screenings for potential hereditary conditions.

Doctor’s orders: “Start the conversation at your next family gathering,” suggests Dr. Roundtree. “Knowing whether conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or certain cancers run in your family can help make a powerful difference for early detection and prevention.”

Prioritizing your health in 2025 doesn’t require a complete overhaul of your lifestyle. And, when you find yourself in need of care or other support from a healthcare provider, virtual care can make it easier and more convenient to get help. Many consumers already have access to virtual care services like MD Live by Evernorth through their health insurance. As your new health benefits take effect this year, check with your health insurance provider to see what virtual care services are available to support your 2025 health resolutions.

Make a New Year’s resolution to prepare your home

2025-01-08T10:59:00

(BPT) – When it comes to goal setting for the new year ahead, why not put prepping your home for unexpected life moments top of the list? After all, your home is the center of your life, and the place you most want to feel safe and secure — especially during severe weather. Take time to think about ways you can be sure your home is better prepared — which is also the best way to protect yourself and your family — as you look forward to the new year.

Keep calm and power on

Prioritize communication

In an age when everyone uses their phones to communicate, it’s more important than ever to have access to contact information for people you may need to contact in an emergency — even when phones aren’t working — which can include close neighbors, friends and family members. Make sure everyone in your household has access to both digital and printed lists of the most essential contacts, including your area’s emergency services numbers.

Make a plan

For the most common weather events that occur where you live, as well as household emergencies that can happen anywhere such as home fires, be sure to have a plan in place so everyone knows what to do and where to go if you need to leave your home. Setting up a neighbor’s home or other safe location nearby to wait during a crisis can make a huge difference and relieve worry. Regularly practice your plan so even younger children will remember what to do if the time comes.

Keep your docs safe

Ensure that your vital documents such as passports, birth certificates, deeds, insurance and other financial info are stored in a waterproof, fireproof safe in your home, so you won’t have to go through the hassle of replacing them — which could slow down access to services your family needs during an emergency. Keep copies of documents in a secondary location such as a trusted family member’s home or a bank safe deposit box for an extra layer of protection.

Be ready with a water supply

Many weather emergencies and natural disasters can interrupt the accessibility of clean, drinkable water to your home. To help give you peace of mind that you can stay hydrated no matter what, the CDC recommends having on hand at least one gallon of commercially bottled water per person in your household per day — up to about two weeks if possible — so you would have enough for drinking, cooking and personal hygiene if your tap water is compromised.

Know your home’s systems

There may be many instances when your local authorities recommend shutting off power to your home (due to the threat of a gas leak, fire or flooding), or times you may need to shut off the water (such as for a burst pipe). Make sure you and every other adult (or older child) knows how and where to turn off the power and water if necessary. Understanding your home’s basic and most crucial systems can help prevent greater calamities from happening, so put this item on your New Year’s to-do list along with these other preparedness steps.

You’ll breathe a lot easier heading into the new year, and you’ll feel more safe and secure if you take concrete steps to prepare your home and family.

Semiconductors 101: What they are, how they’re used and what they mean to you

2025-01-07T08:01:00

(BPT) – Quick, what’s a semiconductor? You probably have a vague understanding — they’re in computers, right? You may have also heard about semiconductor shortages slowing automobile production.

The fact is, this little piece of technology is increasingly important to our modern world and vital to our way of life. Semiconductors are found in everything from smartphones and military guidance systems to modern vehicles. What are they, exactly? How are they used, and what do they mean to you? The ability to access the world in the palm of your hand, for one thing. Not to mention jobs.

It’s worth brushing up on this technology. Here’s a primer on semiconductors, from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC).

What are semiconductors?

Semiconductors, better known as chips, are tiny devices that conduct electricity in certain conditions and block it in others. The ability to act as either a conductor or insulator is important because many of today’s devices rely on the precise control of electric current to function properly. At the highest level, semiconductors are the foundation — the “brains” — powering the electronics we use every day, including smartphones, computers, AI, cars and much more.

Where are semiconductors used?

Even if you’ve never heard of semiconductors, you’re relying on one right now to read this on your computer, tablet or smartphone. But they’re not just for our personal devices. They’re a foundational element in:

  • Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and infotainment systems in cars
  • Electric vehicle powertrains
  • Medical imaging equipment
  • Wearable health devices
  • Robotics and AI
  • Factory automation systems
  • 5G networks
  • Data centers
  • Network infrastructure
  • Satellite systems
  • Missile guidance systems
  • Military electronics

In short, semiconductors help power the modern world. They are vital to our way of life and our economy.

Are all semiconductors made overseas?

With talk of trade wars and tariffs and how they will affect the availability of things like smartphones and cars, discussions come up about reshoring the semiconductor supply chain. In other words, bringing it to the U.S. from overseas. But, what you might not realize is that it’s already happening. The state of Michigan, for example, is a leader in semiconductor manufacturing. Why Michigan? Location, resources and education.

Michigan has long been the global epicenter for manufacturing. The state is home to nearly one-fifth of U.S. auto production, more than any other state in the nation, and has the greatest concentration of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the country, with 26 having headquarters or technology centers in the state.

Furthermore, semiconductor manufacturing relies on purified water — both to clean components and to cool down equipment. Michigan has access to more than 20% of the world’s fresh surface water via the Great Lakes. The state strikes a delicate balance here, recognizing its responsibility to protect this crucial natural resource, while utilizing it to create local jobs and grow surrounding communities.

The availability of chips impacts every part of the modern world economy, much of which is represented by the brands with significant employment and physical presences in Michigan as well. They’re companies like Hemlock Semiconductor, which produces the polysilicon for one-third of the world’s chips, as well as KLA, Wacker, SK Siltron and Calumet Electronics.

Why does upskilling matter in the semiconductor industry?

It’s not enough to be near industries that rely on semiconductors. It’s also about having a skilled, local workforce to get the job done. This means technical training, in which workers learn the skills to operate the rather complex equipment needed to manufacture the chips and the kind of digital literacy necessary to analyze data and deal with problems that come up.

This shows that “bots” aren’t here to take jobs, they’re here to help create jobs. Better jobs, for both today’s workforce and tomorrow’s. And Michigan is at the forefront of this movement.

The University of Michigan is one of the top U.S. universities in semiconductor education, along with other Research 1 (R1) universities like Michigan State University and Wayne State University. Leaders in the state are also creating innovative workforce partnerships with the SEMI Foundation, ensuring the talent pipeline exists for these jobs. The Semiconductor Career and Apprenticeship Network Program will provide grant funding for workers in the microelectronics industry.

As you can see, semiconductors are a small piece of technology with a big impact. The MEDC works with Michigan businesses and communities to deliver the services and support they need to grow and succeed as the demand for semiconductors increases. Woman climbs Kilimanjaro after life-changing blood cancer diagnosis

This is Allison’s personal multiple myeloma story, and others may be different. Allison is a paid spokesperson for GSK.

Allison’s Story

When the back pain, exhaustion and string of respiratory infections hit, Allison Freedman initially chalked it up to the price of a busy life. At age 42, the active mom of twins was fresh out of an MBA program and had just moved to Boulder, Colorado, to start a new job.

As she continued to feel worse and the pain became excruciating, she knew something was wrong. A CT scan revealed multiple broken vertebrae and ribs, and then she heard the words no one is ever prepared for: you have cancer.

A PET scan, bloodwork and bone marrow biopsy confirmed that it was multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer that forms in the bone marrow, weakening the bones and immune system[i].

Multiple myeloma is the second most common blood cancer in the US[ii], with more than 35,000 new cases diagnosed each year[iii].

While anyone can get multiple myeloma, it’s most common in people 65 and older, slightly more common in men than women and twice as common among Black Americans versus white[iv]. Freedman didn’t fit the typical profile at all, which made her diagnosis all the more surreal.

The Battle Begins

Freedman’s doctor told her that although there is no cure for multiple myeloma, there are treatments available[v]. She first underwent induction, or front-line therapy, before it was determined that she was a candidate for high dose chemotherapy followed by an autologous stem cell transplant to rebuild her bone marrow using her own healthy cells[vi].

After the transplant, her cancer went into remission, and she started maintenance therapy to help keep it from coming back. She continues regular care and monitoring by her oncology team. For any person diagnosed with multiple myeloma, this ongoing care and monitoring with your healthcare team is critical as the majority of patients see the cancer return following initial treatment success (known as a recurrence or relapse), or fail to respond to treatment altogether (known as refractory)[vii].

Through it all, Freedman devoted every ounce of her energy to making memories with her kids, who were eight years old at the time of her diagnosis.

“I started to see the value of things I had been rushing through,” Freedman said. “Parenting can be grueling, but suddenly I wanted every moment with my kids.”

Climbing Back to Life

Although Freedman’s cancer seemed to be at bay, she was still very weak, and the fractures had yet to heal. Despite all that, she had a strong drive to get back to her active lifestyle.

“It started with short walks, then longer ones. I missed being out in nature, so I pushed myself, bit by bit,” Freedman said.

Then, she heard about a group of multiple myeloma survivors and supporters who were climbing Mount Kilimanjaro — the tallest mountain in Africa — to raise awareness and money for the disease. The idea was daunting, but for Freedman, it wasn’t just about the physical challenge. It was about reclaiming her life. At age 50, after months of preparation, she found herself standing at the foot of the mountain, ready to begin her ascent.

The climb was brutal, but it was also healing.

“Getting to the top with this new community I’d found — it was one of the most powerful moments of my life,” Freedman said.

Moving Forward

After that experience, Freedman started sharing her story with the world so that she might help others to find their inner fortitude and imagine a future full of possibilities.

Her twins, now high school seniors, have grown up witnessing their mother’s incredible resilience.

“Their childhood has been shaped by having a mom with cancer,” Freedman said. “But I hope they’ve learned that even when life gets hard, you don’t give up. You put one foot in front of the other.”
