Staying a Step Ahead as You Age

2025-12-04T09:01:00

(BPT) – Benjamin Franklin once said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” It’s a helpful mindset for many aspects of life, but particularly so when it comes to your health — small lifestyle changes and preventive treatments can make a big impact. This is particularly true as people age, when many want to maintain their independence. While some proactive measures are helpful to people of all ages, such as exercise, good nutrition and focusing on mental health, others might require a little extra help. Fortunately, AARP member benefits are a great resource to find ways to be proactive with your health and well-being, and even save some money in the process.

“Taking simple actions today can make our lives better tomorrow and for years to come. But sometimes the hardest part is taking that first step,” said Doug Armstrong, AARP Vice President, Health Products and Services. “With AARP member benefits, members may find it easier to take that first step on the path to better health — saving money while doing it — and to proactively build a brighter future for each and every one of us as we choose how we live as we age.”

Find a Four-Legged Friend

Pet ownership is a great way to avoid some preventable health issues. The simple task of walking a dog each day increases physical activity, which improves cardiovascular health and helps maintain a healthy weight. This, in turn, can help prevent a host of other ailments, including diabetes, heart disease, some cancers and more.

Studies have also suggested that among those living alone, having a pet was associated with a slower rate of cognitive decline, enabling these individuals to continue living independently for longer. Dogs also help reduce isolation and loneliness and even help foster social connections when owners engage in activities with their pet. Older adults who socialize tend to have higher levels of physical activity, greater positive moods and fewer negative feelings.

Getting a pet is a great way to be proactive about your independence, but caring for a pet can get expensive. However, you can be proactive about that, too. With Fetch Pet Insurance, AARP members can save 10% on monthly premiums for the lifetime of their pet’s policy. Plans can cover qualifying care for injuries and illnesses, emergency vet visits, prescription meds and supplements, plus boarding fees for your pet should they require hospitalization.

Keep Your Vision Clear

Blurry vision is something small that can affect your life in a big way. Being unable to see clearly can impact your ability to drive, read important information and even safely walk or exercise on your own. Proactively scheduling regular eye exams to ensure your prescription is up to date is an easy way to avoid these issues and can also detect anything more serious before it gets worse. Once you have your updated prescription, avoid any eyesight-induced accidents by also updating your lenses. At Target Optical®, AARP members can get an eye exam or bring their own prescription and get 50% off the purchase of additional complete pairs (frames + lenses) of prescription eyewear or sunglasses, which also protect your eyes. Plus, they save an extra $10 off the purchase of a frame, lenses, a complete pair of glasses or contact lenses (2 boxes minimum).

Little Savings Add Up

Finding ways to save money where you can adds up in the long run. Take prescriptions, for example.

“As we get older, we might require ongoing prescription medication. Saving a few dollars each time that prescription is filled can add up significantly over time. That savings can come in handy for future expenses that might arise, whether they be medical costs, home repairs or even leisure activities,” said Doug Armstrong, AARP Vice President, Health Products and Services.

AARP® Prescription Discounts provided by Optum Rx® offers a free prescription discount card that can be used at over 66,000 pharmacies nationwide for savings on FDA-approved medications. The program is open to anyone, whether you’re an AARP member or not — but AARP members receive additional benefits, including deeper discounts on medications, home delivery, coverage for your dependents and more.

Prevention is the Best Medicine

Focusing on preventive care is a helpful step toward avoiding more severe illnesses. Scheduling regular appointments with a physician can help monitor for any issues and help you formulate a plan for prevention and often treat ailments before they get worse.

Oak Street Health provides personalized care for older adults on Medicare, designed to help you stay healthy and independent. AARP members and non-members get same-day/next-day appointments where available, a dedicated care team, and a 24/7 patient support line. Oak Street Health has over 230 primary care doctor offices across 27 states.

Getting regular exercise and building strength and flexibility is important, not only to your overall health, but also in preventing debilitating injuries or falls. Physical therapy can help identify areas of weakness and provide exercises that will keep you agile and resilient for years to come.

Members and non-members can receive at-home physical therapy from AARP® Physical Therapy At Home™ by Luna. Most insurances and Medicare are accepted by Luna. A prescription may not be needed to start.

Being proactive with your health also means having a plan in place in case of unexpected health care expenses, like considering Medicare-Related Options that allow you to find the right coverage to fit your lifestyle and financial situation. For example, Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) can help pay for hospital costs, inpatient and outpatient care and doctor visits, but it does not cover all costs. Medicare-Related Options can be a great resource to help with some of what Medicare doesn’t pay.

Intentional 2026 resolutions: Eat with purpose, choose Chilean salmon

2025-12-04T09:01:00

(BPT) – The start of a new year is a great time to reset routines and realign with wellness goals. For many Americans, that means shifting to more intentional eating and focusing on foods that nourish both the body and the planet. Chilean salmon makes an outstanding addition to any lifestyle, offering a purposeful protein that supports long-term wellness, sustainability and satisfaction.

How Chilean salmon fits into a healthier 2026

Woman cutting salmon into serving portions.

As consumers continue to prioritize nutrient-dense, high-quality foods, salmon from Chile stands out as an exceptional choice. Each serving provides high-quality, lean protein and a rich supply of omega-3 fatty acids that adds even more nutritional value, delivering benefits for the heart, brain, immune system and more.

Salmon from Chile is considered a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) best choice since it’s low in mercury, making it a safe and family-friendly option, including for pregnant women and children. The FDA also includes salmon on its list of foods that meet the new criteria for its updated definition of “healthy,” which focuses on nutrient-dense foods that promote long-term health.

A sustainable start to the new year

Eating with purpose means thinking beyond the plate. Farmed salmon, including salmon from Chile, has the highest edible yield and lowest feed conversion ratio (FCR) of animal proteins, meaning it’s the most efficient animal to farm. Chilean salmon farmers are also constantly improving their practices to be more sustainable and efficient, ensuring that health-conscious choices also support the planet. The consistently cold waters of Patagonia allow Chilean salmon to thrive year-round, making fresh and frozen salmon available at local grocers no matter the season.

Easy ways to eat with intention

Small, consistent choices can make the biggest impact. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend at least 8 ounces of seafood per week, and incorporating salmon from Chile can be one of the simplest ways to meet this standard. With the rise of budget-friendly frozen options and time-saving hacks, keeping salmon from Chile in the freezer makes intentional eating even more effortless. Flash frozen at peak freshness, Chilean salmon thaws in just 15 minutes, offering a fast and nourishing solution for weeknight meals or meal-prep sessions.

Salmon has a versatile flavor profile that pairs well with countless preparations, whether baked, grilled or pan-seared for a quick weeknight dinner. Ask for salmon from Chile at your local seafood counter and start the new year with a choice that feels as good as it tastes, supporting your health goals and the planet well into 2026.

5 simple ways to fight the winter blues

2025-12-04T08:49:00

(BPT) – Have you noticed that you feel a little low during the winter months? You’re not alone. As daylight hours shorten and temperatures drop, many people experience lower energy and mood, often called the “winter blues.”

Luckily, there are easy steps you can take to lift your spirits, so you can continue to feel energetic no matter how cold and dark it is outside. Check out these five simple tips from Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner that can help keep the winter blues away this season.

Move in ways that feel good

Moving during the colder months is key to keeping yourself happy and healthy during the winter. You don’t have to incorporate an intensive workout. Instead, focus on moving your body in a way that feels comfortable to you. Stretching, dancing, yoga or a brisk walk around your neighborhood can boost your circulation and mood throughout the dark and cold months of the year.

Prevent energy crashes by limiting added sugar

Added sugars in your food and drinks may temporarily boost your energy. However, the sudden spike in blood sugar can quickly lead to a “sugar crash,” leaving you tired and irritable. This winter, be mindful of what you’re eating and limit added sugars, so you can prevent energy crashes and mood dips throughout your day.

Reset your rhythm with light therapy

The short and dark winter days can disrupt your circadian rhythm, leading to poor sleep, lower energy and even a grumpy disposition. Consider starting your day by sipping a cup of coffee in front of a light therapy lamp. A light therapy lamp mimics natural sunlight, which can help reset your body’s rhythm when daylight is short. Just 15 minutes a day can make a difference! If a lamp isn’t available, bundle up and go on a morning walk because even cloudy natural light can support your sleep-wake cycle.

Stay connected

It can be challenging to see your friends and family when the weather is cold, rainy and snowy. However, staying connected with your loved ones is vital to maintaining high spirits during the dark winter months. Get into the habit of making quick phone calls to catch up, sharing a meal or planning a fun activity to nurture your relationships and keep feelings of isolation at bay.

Start your morning with vitamin-rich meals

Starting the day with a meal that fuels your body and lifts your mood is a simple yet effective way to weather the winter months. When choosing a breakfast recipe, look for meals that are rich in Vitamin D — which strengthens immune cells so they can defend against harmful bacteria — and Vitamin E — which acts as an antioxidant to reduce oxidative stress and protects your cells from damage.

Try this Shiitake Mushroom & Red Bell Pepper Frittata with Smoked Salmon recipe using Eggland’s Best eggs. These eggs contain six times more Vitamin D and 10 times more Vitamin E compared to ordinary eggs to help support your energy, mood and overall wellness all winter long.

Shiitake Mushroom & Red Bell Pepper Frittata with Smoked Salmon

Prep time: 12 minutes; Cook time: 12 minutes; Yield: 14

Ingredients

  • 6 Eggland’s Best eggs, large
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 6 ounces shiitake mushrooms stems minced fine, caps sliced 1/4″ wide
  • 6 ounces red bell pepper, seeded and cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 3 tablespoons milk, preferably almond or oat milk
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme, divided
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 ounces smoked salmon, coarsely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons Greek yogurt

Preparation

1. Heat a 10-inch skillet with sloped sides over medium heat. Add olive oil. After 30 seconds, add mushroom caps and bell pepper. Cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

2. Preheat broiler.

3. In a medium bowl, beat together eggs, milk, 1 tablespoon of thyme, and salt and pepper. Stir in smoked salmon. Set aside.

4. Add turmeric and black pepper to the skillet, stirring for a few seconds. Stop stirring and pour egg mixture into skillet over vegetables. Mix well.

5. With a spatula, press vegetables down into an even layer under egg mixture. Cook without stirring until eggs are set on bottom, about 5 minutes. (Center will be wet.) Transfer to broiler. Broil 4-5 inches from heat source for 2 minutes or until eggs are set.

6. Cut into wedges.

7. Drop on spoonfuls of yogurt and sprinkle the remaining one tablespoon thyme over frittata before serving.

Recipe Notes: Crimini mushrooms may replace the shiitake mushrooms but with less savoriness. Two teaspoons dried thyme may replace the fresh thyme. Crush the dried herb for extra aroma. Lox that is not salty may replace the smoked salmon.

Just a few simple tweaks to your day can help you fight the winter blues, so you can continue to thrive no matter the weather. To find more recipes to start your winter mornings with energy and drive, visit EgglandsBest.com.

How to guide your teen’s academic interests on the road to college

2025-12-04T01:59:00

(BPT) – From the time your teen is preparing to enter high school through their senior year, encouraging their interests and expanding their horizons can lead to academic, intellectual and social growth that will serve them well in college and beyond. Using what they’re curious and excited about as your springboard, you can help provide inspiring opportunities, showing them that pursuing subjects that fascinate them can lead to greater things ahead.

Pay attention to cues

Notice when your teen or pre-teen appears to be interested in a specific culture, a historic period, ideas about philosophy, problem-solving or the natural world — or anything else. Encouraging their curiosity about whatever subjects most fascinate them can help open up entirely new academic fields to explore.

Discover summer enrichment options

Because the school year can get so busy for parents and teens alike, summer is the perfect time for students to further explore their growing academic interests.

For example, rising 9th through 12th graders can take online, synchronous enrichment courses through Stanford Pre-Collegiate Summer Institutes. This program provides intellectually curious students the chance to study advanced subjects rarely taught in high school, offering students the opportunity for inspiration and a deep dive into cutting-edge topics. Students from around the world explore academic topics in small classes, allowing them to participate in real-time discussions with expert instructors and other students. Participants pursue in-depth, interactive exploration of fields like creative writing, design, engineering, life sciences, math, technology and more.

Students heading to college can use these summer enrichment opportunities to help them check out potential college majors.

Prepare for college

As your teen begins thinking about college, you can further encourage their academic aspirations by exploring nearby campuses early, even taking advantage of college-level courses that might be available to high school students. This will help them better understand college expectations and give them the chance to learn what college will be like. It’s also never too early to begin discussing future options with their school’s academic counselor.

To give your highschooler a taste of what college life will be like, rising 11th and 12th graders can participate in experiences such as the three-week, in-person residential program at the Stanford Summer Humanities Institute on the Stanford University campus. In this program, students from around the globe gather to experience a college-level humanities course through seminars led by Stanford professors.

Course participants engage with one humanities subject, such as literature, politics or philosophy — ranging from ancient Greek philosophy to the study of revolutions throughout history and more. Participants work alongside faculty and discussion leaders to write college-level research papers that explore complex questions at the heart of the humanities.

These advanced, unique courses are offered for academic enrichment and growth, not for credit or grade. The greatest value of participating in these programs is the experience, which balances a college-level academic experience with field trips and social activities that foster lasting bonds with peers from around the world.

Maximize school-based opportunities

When your child’s school offers courses that overlap their growing interests, encourage them to add those courses to their class schedule, or consider joining an after-school club that matches their interest. No club exists for that topic? They could consider starting a club of their own. Many schools allow students to create clubs, if they have a teacher to sponsor them and approval from the administration. Students can then invite outside guests from the community to speak at the club, organize special events or even plan field trips to enhance their understanding of the subject. Students with specific interests may also benefit from taking courses at a local community college.

Whether they become immersed in a new class, join a club or start their own, students become motivated by school-based activities that explore topics they’re curious about. Extracurricular activities like clubs also speak volumes about their interests and initiative when they’re included in college applications.

The years before college provide inspiring opportunities for students, helping them hone their learning skills and broaden their academic horizons as they prepare for their next steps in life.

Students can find more information about summer enrichment options and apply at SummerInstitutes.SPCS.stanford.edu and SummerHumanities.SPCS.stanford.edu.

Holiday Safety Alert: Expert Tips to Prevent Lithium-Ion Battery Fires at Home and On-the-Go

2025-12-03T13:01:00

(BPT) – With holiday season in full swing, fire safety experts are urging Americans to “Take C.H.A.R.G.E.” of lithium-ion battery safety after data reveals alarming gaps in public awareness and a spike in battery-related incidents at home and while traveling.

According to UL Standards & Engagement, 50% of Americans admit they don’t know anything about lithium-ion battery dangers, despite these batteries powering many modern devices from smartphones to e-bikes. Even more concerning: 60% of travelers don’t realize how prevalent these batteries are in everyday items.

The warning comes as airlines reported lithium-ion battery thermal runaway incidents on an average of two flights per week in 2024. Of the thermal runaway incidents occurring on planes, one in five forced a diverted landing, return to gate, emergency evacuation or unplanned deplaning.

The Holiday Travel Connection

With the holidays around the corner, a time when many are traveling, it’s important to know how to travel safely with lithium-ion battery-powered devices. Most travelers carry four lithium-ion battery devices: smartphones (81%), laptops (40%), wireless headphones (38%) and tablets (35%).

Lithium-ion batteries store energy more densely than traditional batteries. When damaged, improperly charged or overheated, they can enter thermal runaway and spark, explode or cause fire.

“Recent spikes in lithium-ion battery incidents in transit environments have underscored the need to expand public education,” said Nicole Sanders, Public Education Lead for UL Research Institutes.

Six Essential Safety Steps

Follow the Take C.H.A.R.G.E. of Battery Safety for how to properly handle, store and charge lithium-ion battery-powered devices:

  1. Choose Certified Products: Prioritize your safety by selecting lithium-ion battery-powered devices certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory to ensure they meet important safety requirements.
  2. Handle with Care: Always follow manufacturer guidelines and use the provided charger for lithium-ion battery-powered devices. Avoid modifying batteries or chargers and charge your devices in safe environments away from extreme temperatures, direct sunlight and flammable materials. Never charge under a pillow, blanket or in a bag. It’s also important to unplug devices at home and pay attention to size limitations from transit providers before embarking on a trip.
  3. Always Stay Alert for Warning Signs: Regularly inspect devices for any signs of damage, such as swelling or punctures. Be aware of unusual sounds like hissing or popping. Watch out for excessive heat or a strange odor. White or gray wispy smoke indicates there is immediate danger of fire. If you notice any of these warning signs, immediately unplug and stop using the lithium-ion battery-powered device. Keep your devices visible when traveling and charging. Do not put lithium-ion battery-powered devices or holiday gifts in checked bags.
  4. Recycle Devices and Batteries Properly: Never toss batteries in public trash bins or leave them behind when traveling.
  5. Get Out Quickly if There’s a Fire: Know the warning signs to look and listen for and get out if you see or hear them. If a device shows warning signs, evacuate immediately and alert authorities. When at home, follow your fire escape plan to leave immediately, closing doors behind you as you exit and call 9-1-1. Create an escape plan and practice it with everyone living in the home so you’re ready in the event of a fire emergency. In public spaces like transit hubs, locate exits and escape routes.
  6. Educate Others on Safe Practices: If gifting battery-powered devices, inform recipients of how they can Take C.H.A.R.G.E. of Battery Safety using safe travel and charging practices. Help protect your travel companions by reminding them to keep devices in carry-on luggage, never in checked bags. It is crucial to see these guidelines not as individual tips, but interconnected steps.

Each measure supports and reinforces the others. Embracing and adhering to these guidelines can significantly reduce risk and create a safer environment at home, at work or on-the-go. For more information, visit batteryfiresafety.org.

How the Right Nutrition Helps Preemies Come Home Sooner

2025-12-02T08:01:01

(BPT) – Every parent in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) dreams of the day they can bring their premature baby home safely. While many factors influence how long a preemie stays in the hospital, nutrition plays a bigger role than most parents realize in determining when that day arrives.

Premature babies face unique challenges. Born weeks or months before their bodies and digestive systems are fully developed, preemies need 20-40% more calories and 2-3 times more protein than full-term babies, to catch up on the growth they missed in the womb. This is why doctors often add something called a “fortifier” to mom’s breastmilk or donor milk for the smallest, most fragile preemies in the NICU, to give them the extra nutrition they need to grow healthy and strong.

Understanding Your Fortifier Choices

It’s important for parents to know that not all nutritional fortifiers are created equal. There are two types of fortifiers: one is cow milk-based and the other is breastmilk-based. While both are labeled “human milk fortifiers,” in the U.S., only fortifiers from a company called Prolacta Bioscience are made from 100% donor breastmilk, free from cow milk and corn syrup.

This difference between cow milk and breastmilk matters, especially for the smallest preemies born weighing 2.75 pounds or less. Breastmilk contains natural antibodies and immune-boosting properties and is gentle on the immature digestive system of fragile preemies. Studies have shown fortifiers made from cow milk may increase the risk of complications, including a serious intestinal disease called necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).

Human Milk for Human Babies: Clinical Evidence Shows Real Differences

Research shows that premature babies fed breastmilk-based fortifiers, as part of an exclusive human milk-based diet, tend to have:

  • Lower risk of infection (late onset sepsis) and NEC
  • Less lung disease
  • Reduced eye disease
  • Improved long-term outcomes
  • Shorter NICU stays

But it’s not only research. Hospital NICUs across the country are seeing the benefits firsthand for the preemies in their care. This year alone, more than half of the Level 3 & 4 NICUs in the U.S. have used 100% breastmilk-based fortifiers for their smallest preemies. These hospitals are experiencing how the right nutrition can make the difference between a complicated NICU stay and a smoother journey home.

Advocating for Your Baby

If you have a baby in the NICU, talk to your care team about the best nutritional options for your child. The right nutritional choice can make a real difference in your preemie’s short- and long-term health. You can ask for Prolacta nutritional products by name, and your hospital can order them without a contract, often for overnight delivery, even for just one baby!

When your little one is fighting to grow strong, every feeding decision matters. Educational resources are available to help support families. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and advocate for the nutrition that gives your baby the best chance to thrive.

Flu vaccines: Your first line of defense this flu season

2025-12-02T07:01:00

Did you get your flu shot this year? You might think that having the flu (influenza) just means a bad cold or cough. But the truth is that flu can be serious and could cause unpredictable symptoms. It can disrupt your daily life and even be life-threatening,[1] which is why taking steps to help protect yourself, like getting your annual flu vaccine, is so important.

Anyone can catch the flu. Even if you’re healthy, you can still be infected by the virus. Additionally, some people — like older adults and those with certain health conditions like asthma and cardiovascular disease — are at a higher risk of developing serious flu-related complications if they get sick.[1] That’s why it’s crucial that you get a flu vaccine every year to help protect yourself and others against the virus and its potentially serious flu complications.

Influenza by the numbers

The 2024-2025 flu season was one of the most severe in almost a decade, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In fact, the CDC found that it was the first season in seven years to be classified as high severity.[2] Based on data from October 1, 2024 through May 17, 2025, CDC estimates there have been up to[3]:

  • 82 million flu-related illnesses
  • 1.3 million flu hospitalizations
  • 130,000 flu deaths

Adults 65 years and older, pregnant people and those with certain chronic medical conditions of all ages are especially vulnerable to flu-related complications.[4] In addition, about 95% of patients hospitalized due to flu last season had at least one chronic condition.[5]

Getting a flu vaccine may not prevent you from contracting the flu. However, it can help lessen the severity and duration of symptoms and help lower your risk of developing severe flu-related illnesses.

Flu symptoms include more than just a fever, chills and cough. In fact, even if you don’t have a fever, you may still have the virus. According to the CDC, other flu symptoms[1] include:

  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

If you get the flu, you may recover in a few days. However, some people may develop moderate to serious — even life-threatening — complications[1] like:

  • Pneumonia
  • Sinus and ear infections
  • Inflammation of the heart, brain or muscle tissues
  • Respiratory and kidney failure
  • Sepsis

What you can do

The flu can be unpredictable, and the first and most important thing you can do to help lower your risk of getting the flu is to get vaccinated. Higher-dose flu vaccines are among those preferentially recommended for those over 65, according to the CDC and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). Higher-dose flu vaccines contain more antigen (the part of the vaccine that helps your body build up protection against influenza viruses) than other standard dose adjuvanted flu vaccines, as they are potentially more effective than standard dose adjuvanted flu vaccines for your age group.[1]

In addition to scheduling your flu shot, you can take preventative daily actions to stop the spread of germs and reduce your risk of contracting the flu[6]:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water
  • Carry alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Cover coughs and sneezes
  • Limit your exposure to people who are sick
  • Wipe down frequently touched surfaces

Beyond the Basics: Effortless Holiday Tips for a Welcoming and Connected Celebration

2025-12-02T14:17:00

(BPT) – The holidays aren’t just about the food — they’re about laughter, traditions and making special memories. Gatherings provide dedicated time with loved ones to share stories, play games, and enjoy delicious meals, creating long-lasting, treasured moments.

Whether you’re hosting a big family dinner or a cozy get-together with friends, Land O’Lakes® Butter and Cheese can be your go-to for helping create delicious dishes and unforgettable experiences. With the help of Food Network champ, cookbook author and viral recipe creator Mackenzie Smith of @grilledcheesesocial, Land O’Lakes is sharing practical tips to bring people together during holiday gatherings and inspire home cooks and bakers to spend more time at the table:

1. Plan a Family Recipe Swap

Bringing a dish to a holiday gathering is more than just sharing food — it’s sharing a piece of yourself. Whether it’s a family recipe or a festive favorite, it can spark conversations and create connections around the table. As a fun twist, ask guests to bring a favorite holiday recipe card to exchange. This gives everyone a new dish to try next year and is a heartfelt way to share meaningful traditions.

2. Bake and Make Ahead So You Can Be More Present

Plan for more togetherness by prepping baked goods in advance. Make cookie dough or pie crusts early, freeze them, and pull them out when you’re ready to bake. Smith explains, “While I love being in the kitchen, this step makes it less of a chore and allows for more time for visiting with loved ones.” And instead of juggling multiple pots and pans, you can also roast veggies, proteins, and even stuffing on sheet pans. This saves you time and makes cleanup a breeze. Get inspired with more ideas by visiting landolakes.com.

3. Create a DIY Hot Cocoa and Coffee Bar

Set up a cozy welcome station with mugs, coffee, cocoa mix, whipped cream, marshmallows and fun toppings like crushed peppermint or caramel drizzle. Add a few festive extras like cinnamon sticks or flavored syrups for a gourmet touch.

4. Host a Butter Cookie Decorating Station

Turn dessert into a family tradition! Bake classic butter cookies ahead of time, then set up a simple decorating station with bowls of buttercream frosting, royal icing, sprinkles and candy toppers. “It’s interactive, fun and keeps kids of all ages laughing together and occupied,” Smith says. “And when it comes to buttercream frosting, Land O’Lakes® Butter is the secret to that rich, creamy texture everyone loves.”

5. Set Up a Game or Story Corner

Create a collaborative space featuring classic board or card games, vintage photographs or holiday books for kids and adults alike. It’s another great way to promote face-to-face, social interaction that keeps the energy warm while you finish up in the kitchen. Set up a backdrop with gaming props and costumes for guests to capture memories.

6. Leave a Lasting Impression

Make your holiday gathering extra memorable by sending guests home with more than just leftovers! Let guests curate a simple takeaway gift before hitting the road. Smith suggests mason jars of homemade spice blends, sachets filled with festive scents, or rolls of compound butter made with Land O’Lakes® Butter and herbs. Set out simple packaging like parchment paper, twine and gift tags so everyone can personalize their creations and bring home a little piece of the celebration.

The holidays move fast but remember to slow down and savor what matters most: good food and great company. With a little planning and a few creative ideas, you’ll spend less time stressing and more time laughing, sharing stories and making memories that last long after the season ends.
