How to teach kids the value of money when they can’t see it

2026-04-27T08:01:00

(BPT) – Learning about money was once a hands-on experience. Kids counted coins, put dollar bills in a wallet and dropped spare change in a piggy bank. Saving, spending and budgeting were tangible, making those lessons easier to understand.

Today, money matters are much different. Purchases happen with a tap, a swipe or an online checkout, and few physical reminders indicate that money is being spent. For kids, it can be difficult to understand where money goes, how quickly it adds up and why small decisions matter.

Fortunately, financial literacy basics haven’t changed. Kids still need to learn how to save, spend wisely and make thoughtful decisions. Parents may just need to rethink how they teach those lessons, and the following tips can help.

Help kids see where the money goes.

If money feels invisible, parents can find ways to make it more visible. That can be as simple as sitting down together and looking at a balance, reviewing a recent purchase or checking progress toward a savings goal. When kids see what comes in, goes out and remains, they can connect spending decisions with outcomes.

Everyday banking tools can serve as practical learning tools. For example, ICCU youth accounts have free automatic parent transfers, alerts and transaction history, which can support family discussions about saving and spending in real-time.

Use everyday money moments to talk about choices.

Financial lessons don’t need to be formal or delivered all at once. Often, the best lessons happen in the middle of ordinary moments. If a child asks for a treat at the grocery store, wants to buy something online or wonders why a purchase was postponed, parents can use these types of natural openings to talk about money and choices.

Conversations may address distinguishing between needs and wants, deciding if one purchase matters more than another, or weighing whether spending money now means waiting longer for something else. Such discussions can help children understand trade-offs, priorities and planning ahead.

Give children opportunities to practice with guidance.

Kids learn a lot by doing. Once equipped with a basic understanding of saving and spending, it can be helpful to give them opportunities to practice managing money with some oversight.

They may want to set aside money they receive as gifts and watch their savings grow. Or, they may consider where to spend their savings and how much. The amount doesn’t need to be large to be meaningful. Kids simply need a chance to ask questions, make decisions and learn.

As children grow, conversations about money may shift toward earning. Kids can be encouraged to do chores or find jobs around the neighborhood, such as pet-sitting or yardwork, to earn extra money for their expenses. Parents can check in regularly and keep talking through choices as they come up.

Talk about safely managing money.

Teaching kids about money involves addressing how to handle digital tools safely for their protection. As they get older, they may use conveniences like a debit card, digital payments or online banking.

Parents should cover keeping personal information private, paying attention to account activity, and asking questions and speaking up when something seems off. Tools and protections such as zero liability protection, which is often offered through card networks, can be part of a safety net, but kids should learn responsible habits from the start. Understanding how to use money and how to protect it can put them on a stronger financial path.

Managing money may look different than it once did, but one thing remains the same: When kids gain a strong understanding of how money works and how to make smart choices early, they are better prepared to build strong habits for a lifetime.

How writing by hand can reawaken focus and creativity

2026-04-27T08:05:00

(BPT) – Can you remember the last time you undertook a creative activity or project? If it’s been a while, don’t blame yourself. You might be tempted to attribute it to a lack of motivation, but — more likely than not — you’re feeling foggy, drained and uninspired because of digital overload.

The seemingly endless stream of notifications, emails and updates can make it difficult for your brain to turn off and rest, leading to mental fatigue. This fatigue can be the real culprit that keeps you from performing the hobbies that once brought you joy.

The good news? There’s a simple way to help clear the mental fog. Take a step away from the screens and engage in a restorative, analog act: Writing with pen and paper.

Writing by hand can help ground you, encourage you to think more creatively and empower you to act on your ideas. It’s the perfect way to start an energy reset and intentionally form a new habit that can feed your creativity.

Get started with these simple yet engaging practices to spark your energy and create momentum.

Ease your brain into writing with a ritual

Do you find it difficult to launch straight into a relaxing or creative project when you’ve just finished work for the day? It’s not your fault. Your brain needs help transitioning from one task to another, especially when they’re completely different types of activities. Thankfully, you can cue your brain to switch from work mode into creative mode with simple rituals that reduce the mental friction of getting started.

Create an environment that allows you to relax and leave the worries of the day behind. Turn on soft lighting, put on a curated playlist, pour a fresh cup of tea or coffee and grab a notebook that makes you feel excited to put pen to paper. It’s an easy way to train your brain to reset, so you can focus and tap into your thoughts, feelings and creative ideas.

Boost your mood with intentional color choices

Color is more than just an aesthetic choice. It has the power to shift your mood, energy and mindset, and — ultimately — fuel your creativity.

This isn’t speculation; it’s color science. Many studies have shown that different colors can evoke different emotions and stimulate different cognitive functions. For example, blues can create a sense of calm and focus, yellows can inspire optimism and creativity, and reds can stimulate energy and action. That means that the color you choose can help you tap into the mood-boosting and focus-enhancing effects of that hue.

Activate your energy while writing by choosing sun-kissed shades like reds, oranges and yellows to fuel your vitality, motivation and ideas. A tool like the G2 Boost Energy Pack can help integrate color science into your life by giving you the power to supercharge your energy and attitude for creative ventures.

This intentionally curated energy toolkit is thoughtfully designed to support your mood and creativity. The pack features shades of red to stimulate alertness and action, orange to encourage enthusiasm and yellow to spark optimism and idea generation. By incorporating this curated set of pens into your writing ritual, you have the tools to enhance the energy and momentum of your day.

Feeling overwhelmed? Take your thoughts outdoors

In a world where stimulation is everywhere, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and distracted. Instead of trying to fight through the mental fatigue, try writing outdoors to restore your attention, mental clarity and creativity.

Connecting with nature has a grounding effect on your body and mind. In fact, studies have shown just 20 minutes in nature can significantly lower your stress hormone levels.

Take a walk in the park or nature preserve with a notebook and pen in a meaningful color and find a quiet spot. Take a moment to revel in the rejuvenating power of fresh air, sunshine and the feel of grass underneath your feet. Start by listing what you see, then write down how each item from that list makes you feel. You’ll quickly find that pairing nature with writing by hand can be the perfect remedy for mental overload.

Surprise the group chat with letters

Writing letters by hand forces you to slow down and think deeply about your loved one, cultivating a deeper connection. Instead of relying solely on digital communication to keep up with friends and family near and far, try to reconnect by sending handwritten letters.

Digital communication is convenient, but it can also be impersonal and fleeting. However, when you write and send a letter, you can show the recipient that you care for them in a lasting, tangible way. Your friend or loved one will have a lasting memento that they can hold and reread again and again.

Choose stationary or notecards that feel special — whether through inviting colors such as blue that can promote productivity or green that signal a calm and balanced tone — or playful details to help you look forward to letter writing. Select vibrant pen colors like those from the G2 Boost Collection to reflect or enhance the emotional impact of your words.

Capture inspiration without digital distractions

Have you ever had a brilliant idea that you attempted to save to your notes app, but got distracted by notifications before you could capture it? Don’t let your ideas fly away. Stay in the moment and capture your ideas quickly on paper.

Whether you’re at your desk, in the kitchen or out running errands, keep a notebook or notepad nearby. Not only will you be able to quickly record your ideas, but the physical act of writing also strengthens your memory pathways so your ideas can stick. When you have time, you can flip through your notebook and let your ideas build creative momentum.

Build creative moments and energy with intention

Think of creativity and energy as muscles you can activate and strengthen with intentional practices like writing by hand. While it may be challenging at first, tailoring your environment and routines to prioritize writing can spark ingenuity, sharpen your focus and drive your desire to create.

Easy ways to get more greens in your daily routine

2026-04-24T14:01:00

(BPT) – Life is busy, making it challenging to maintain your personal wellness goals every day. Getting in key nutrients tops most people’s lists, and that usually means including more whole foods such as green veggies. While it may seem difficult to prepare nutritious, veggie-full meals day in and day out, there are simple ways to boost your greens intake and make the most of what you have on hand. The nutrition experts at Nature Made offer tips for increasing the amount of greens you consume as part of your wellness regimen.

“For anyone who is health-conscious, eating more greens is a primary goal and sometimes a struggle,” said Valerie Agyeman, RD, and Nature Made brand partner. “The good news is, it’s easier than you may think to meet that goal.”

Here’s why eating greens is so vital, and ways to make it easier.

Why green vegetables?

While all vegetables are high in fiber, vitamins and minerals, green veggies, especially leafy greens like kale and spinach, also support your metabolism, and may reduce the risk of certain diseases. In addition, cruciferous vegetables (think broccoli, brussels sprouts and cabbage) are especially rich in nutrients and fiber, which aids gut health and provides antioxidants plus other beneficial compounds that support your overall health.

Try some of these methods to help you enjoy more greens in your daily routine.

Keep them fresh

After purchasing (or growing!) green veggies, remove wilted or rotten areas to prevent the rot from spreading. Don’t wash veggies until you’re ready to use them, as additional moisture can spoil them.

Dry veggies first, then store in an air-tight container or sealed plastic bag along with dry paper towel to absorb excess moisture. Keep them in the crisper drawer in your fridge, and enjoy them soon!

Switch them up

Not keen on kale? Look for other options to find what you love. Experiment with turnip greens, watercress, chard or others for more variety in flavor and texture. Veggies can be enjoyed raw, sauteed, creamed, stir-fried or steamed, so discover what methods you like best.

Pro tip: Search for recipes from cuisines that typically highlight specific veggies, like Chinese dishes featuring bok choy or Italian food with arugula.

Flex your culinary muscles

You can find plenty of ways to incorporate green veggies into foods and drinks. Love smoothies? Combine greens with fruit along with coconut water or your favorite milk to create your own unique blend. Frozen fruit or veggies create a refreshing shake-like drink you can enjoy for breakfast, lunch or as a treat.

Spruce up green salads with seasonal berries, toasted nuts or grated cheese for extra flavor, color and texture. Try new dressings to keep salads interesting, boosting flavor by adding Dijon mustard, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar or fresh minced herbs.

Finely chop greens or chiffonade (cut into thin strips) to use in pasta dishes like spaghetti and lasagna, or as pizza toppings; they’ll resemble fresh basil and blend right in! Use chopped greens in soups, burgers or meat loaf, casseroles or as an extra layer of freshness for your favorite grilled sandwich or omelet.

You can easily add greens without drastically changing the taste or texture of most dishes. Avoid adding unwanted moisture with extra veggies by blanching first, then squeezing out extra moisture. Adding a more bitter veggie like arugula, broccoli rabe, collard greens or chard? Reduce bitterness with additional salt, healthy fats like olive oil, more acid (lemon juice or vinegar) or aromatics such as garlic and onions. Taste your food as you cook and adjust as needed!

Pro tip: Most greens reduce a lot in volume when cooked, so you can add more than you think!

A new plan to support Latino prosperity and power the national economy

2026-04-21T08:31:00

(BPT) – By Janet Murguía

The Latino community believes deeply in the promise of America. It is for this reason that Hispanics remain among the most optimistic of Americans, according to decades of polling. At the heart of that optimism is the belief that if you work hard and play by the rules, anyone can achieve their American dream.

But for many Latino families and working-class families today, the path to their own American dream has never been more challenging. And that’s not just bad news for Latinos — it’s bad news for America, because when Latino families struggle, so does the broader economy: our businesses, workforce contributions and consumer spending are engines of national growth, and limiting our prosperity limits the nation’s collective potential.

So over the past year, UnidosUS traveled to 15 states, sat with more than 600 people and asked a simple question: What does it take to get ahead in America today?

UnidosUS was a pioneer in making the connection between the well-being of Latino workers and the nation’s future prosperity more than 25 years ago. Many of the same themes we have heard over the years echoed in our conversations: an economy powered by our community that is leaving too many people behind.

Here’s what we are hearing: Housing is out of reach. Wages don’t stretch. Health care is too expensive. Families are just one unexpected bill away from financial collapse.

What emerged from those conversations is a new vision: UnidosUS’s Economic Prosperity Agenda creates a national blueprint for action, focused on areas where action can make the biggest difference, including the cost of housing, the quality and stability of work, the ability to start and grow a business, and the basic supports families need to stay afloat.

This isn’t just a plan to strengthen economic mobility for Latino families, it’s a plan to maximize shared prosperity for the country — because investing in Latino prosperity is a central economic strategy that will power America’s economic future.

Our housing proposition is one of the clearest examples.

For many families, the dream of homeownership is slipping out of reach. Not because they aren’t working for it, but because the goal posts keep moving. Latinos have demonstrated that they eagerly want to become homeowners. Giving a helping hand to potential buyers will help close the homeownership gap and create 2.9 million new buyers while also giving a boost to the struggling middle class and working families housing market.

Woman standing in the doorway of her plant store with an

Even as families work toward homeownership, some Latino entrepreneurs are starting businesses, creating jobs and strengthening their communities often without the same access to capital or networks as others. Latinos represent one-in-five Americans, but far fewer business owners. Closing that gap could unlock $11 trillion in business revenue and $2.5 trillion in worker pay over the next decade.

Smiling family of four outside their suburan home.

For many families, the most difficult trade-offs are the most personal: choosing between a paycheck or caring for a loved one; paying rent or paying for medication. We’ve already seen what works. The expanded Child Tax Credit reached 61 million children, boosted consumer spending by $28 billion and created 500,000 jobs. Expanding access to health care, paid leave and childcare isn’t a luxury; it’s what allows families to survive and plan for the future.

Latinos are the youngest and fastest-growing segment of the American workforce; and UnidosUS projects Latinos will account for nearly one-in-three new workers by 2030. This is a central economic fact of this decade. The ladder that Latino families have spent generations climbing is the same one that will lift up this economy.

Our Economic Prosperity Agenda is a statement of our values, a call to action and a vision for our future.

Spring lawn care: Expert tips for the first mow of the season

2026-04-21T07:01:00

(BPT) – As temperatures rise and lawns come out of winter dormancy, the first lawn mowing of the season becomes a critical reset point for overall turf health. Lawn care experts say how homeowners approach this first cut can influence everything from root development to how well the lawn holds up against heat, drought and weeds in the months ahead.

“Early in the season, your lawn is transitioning into an active growth phase, so it’s more sensitive to stress,” said Jason Wilk, senior product manager at ECHO Incorporated. “How you handle that first mow can either support that transition or set it back.”

Clear debris and address winter damage first

A strong start begins with clearing what winter left behind. Sticks, leaves and compacted debris don’t just get in the way, they can block airflow and sunlight at the soil level, leading to slower, uneven growth.

Before that first mow, Wilk recommends walking the yard to remove buildup and assess any light damage to shrubs, small branches or overgrowth. For quick cleanup, a battery-powered blower like the ECHO DPB-2500 Blower can efficiently clear debris, while a compact pruning tool like the ECHO DHS-3006 Pruning Saw is well-suited for trimming small limbs and winter dieback.

Taking the time to fully reset the yard before mowing creates a more consistent surface and reduces the likelihood of damaging equipment during that first pass.

Prep your equipment to protect the lawn

After months of sitting idle, lawn equipment should be checked to ensure it’s operating properly before the first use. Even small maintenance oversights can impact cut quality and stress your lawn during a critical growth period.

“A sharp blade doesn’t just improve how your lawn looks, it helps protect it,” Wilk explained. “Clean cuts heal faster, while torn grass blades can lead to moisture loss and make the lawn more vulnerable to disease.”

Before your first mow, Wilk recommends running through a quick equipment check:

  • Inspect and sharpen mower blades: Dull blades tear grass instead of cutting it cleanly, which can lead to browning and increased susceptibility to disease
  • Check battery charge and connections (for battery-powered models): Ensuring a full charge and secure connection helps deliver consistent power throughout the mow
  • Check and top off engine oil (for gas-powered mowers): Proper lubrication helps ensure smooth operation and prevents unnecessary wear
  • Clean or replace the air filter: A clogged filter can reduce engine efficiency and impact performance
  • Inspect the deck and undercarriage: Built-up grass or debris can affect airflow and cut quality
  • Test safety features and controls: Making sure everything is functioning properly before use helps avoid interruptions once you begin mowing

Taking a few minutes to address these basics helps ensure more consistent performance and a cleaner, healthier cut from the start.

Control the first mow and trim lawn edges

One of the most common early-season mistakes is cutting too much at once. While overgrowth is normal coming out of winter, removing too much of the grass blade can shock the plant and weaken its ability to recover.

Turf experts widely follow the “one-third rule,” meaning no more than one-third of the grass blade should be removed at a time.

“People want that fresh-cut look right away, but taking too much off too quickly can set your lawn back,” Wilk added. “A more gradual approach helps it recover and grow in more evenly.”

For areas a lawn mower can’t easily reach, like around trees, fences and tight edges, a string trimmer such as the ECHO DSRM-225 String Trimmer can help create a clean, finished look without overcutting those more delicate areas.

Choose the right lawn mower for early spring conditions

Early-season lawns are often thicker and uneven, making that first mow more demanding than routine cuts later in the year. Using a lawn mower that can maintain consistent power and cutting performance in these conditions helps prevent uneven results and reduces unnecessary stress on the lawn.

Walk-behind mowers like the ECHO DLM-2100SP Self-Propelled Lawn Mower are designed to handle these conditions with features like a brushless motor for gas-like power and a self-propelled system that helps maintain a steady pace.

This type of consistency is especially important during the first mow, where uneven cutting can impact how the lawn fills in throughout the season.

“Consistency is key on that first mow,” Wilk noted. “You want a mower that can handle those early-season conditions without forcing you to overwork parts of the lawn.”

Dial in mowing height to support root development

Mower height plays a major role in how your lawn performs throughout the season. For many common cool-season grasses, experts recommend maintaining a height between 2.5 to 4 inches, especially early in the season when the lawn is still establishing.

Keeping grass slightly taller helps retain moisture, encourage deeper root systems and improve the lawn’s ability to withstand heat and weeds over time. Wilk recommends erring on the taller side early in the season, allowing the lawn to build strength before gradually adjusting to a maintenance height.

Time your mow and finish clean

Conditions on mowing day can directly impact results. Cutting wet grass often leads to clumping, uneven distribution and added strain on equipment, while also increasing the likelihood of soil compaction.

Waiting until the lawn is dry allows for a cleaner, more precise cut and helps maintain the integrity of both the grass and the mower. After mowing, using a blower like the DPB-2500 to clear clippings from driveways and sidewalks can help complete the job and maintain a polished look.

Start strong to simplify the season ahead

Taking a more intentional approach to the first mow creates long-term advantages. By improving cut quality, reducing stress and using the right tools, homeowners can set their lawns up for more consistent growth and easier yard maintenance.

With the right preparation, that first mow becomes less about catching up after winter and more about setting the pace for a healthier, more resilient lawn all season long.

5 easy swaps for a greener life (that help the planet and your wallet)

2026-04-20T11:05:00

(BPT) – In honor of Earth Day this year, consider making a few simple lifestyle changes that can help to reduce your carbon footprint, create less waste in landfills and use energy more efficiently. With climate headlines feeling more overwhelming by the day, it’s easy to feel like individual actions don’t matter — but they do. The good news is, even small swaps in your everyday life can make an impact, and the best time to start is now. With AI-powered tools and smart home technology consuming more electricity than ever, finding cleaner ways to meet our energy needs has never been more urgent.

Here are five ideas for living a little greener this Earth Day, and every day. Each one is good for the planet — and your wallet.

1. Opt for a solar generator

As AI data centers, smart devices and connected home systems drive electricity demand to record highs, more and more household power draw is tied to the digital world — making clean, renewable home energy solutions a smart choice for eco-conscious consumers. With extreme weather events becoming more frequent across the country — from wildfires on the West Coast to hurricanes along the Gulf Coast and ice storms in between — having a reliable solar-powered backup isn’t just a green choice. It’s a practical emergency preparedness strategy for your whole family.

Be ready to power your entire home or key appliances during an outage with a quiet, reliable and emission-free solar generator. For example, the Jackery Solar Generator 5000 Plus can harness the power of the sun to keep your refrigerator, lights, medical devices, EV charger and more going — making it a true home energy backup solution. Even better, the generator has expandable capacity thanks to a battery that can be expanded up to 60 watt-hours (Wh) to grow with your household’s needs.

By pairing the generator with Jackery SolarSaga panels to generate clean energy from the sun, you’re further reducing your reliance on the grid to lower your carbon footprint. You can even use the stored solar energy to power heavyweight appliances such as washing machines and dryers, as well as the growing fleet of AI-enabled smart home devices — and offset costs for grid power when it is at peak pricing.

Today, AI-powered home energy management systems can even work alongside solar generators to automatically optimize when you draw from stored power versus the grid, saving money and reducing emissions at the same time. For households in high-sun states like California, Texas, Arizona and Florida, the combination of solar generation and smart energy management is fast becoming one of the most searched home improvement and emergency preparedness investments of the year.

Bonus: The Jackery Solar Generator uses LiFePO4 battery chemistry for long-lasting, stable home use, designed with safety in mind for indoor environments.

2. Eat locally sourced food

The closer to home your food is grown, the less fuel is used to transport and refrigerate it. On top of that, less packaging is needed for locally grown and sold produce. You can shop at neighborhood farmers markets, or when you’re at the grocery store, look for items labeled as grown in your home state. Supporting local farms also makes an impact because smaller-scale production is likely to use beneficial farming techniques like crop rotation, composting and more efficient irrigation. This kind of slow, intentional approach to food — buying less processed, more local — is at the heart of the growing “slow living” movement, which prioritizes quality and sustainability over convenience.

Love going out to eat? Look for restaurants that have a strong farm-to-table practice featuring locally sourced food.

Bonus: Eating local, seasonal food usually tastes better! You’re eating food that’s at peak ripeness and freshness. And with grocery prices still top of mind for most households, buying seasonal and local is one of the easiest ways to eat well while spending less.

3. Minimize kitchen waste

Similarly, finding ways to reduce and reuse kitchen waste at home can also impact the environment in many positive ways, including reducing the amount of methane released by rotting foods, which is a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. In a time when more people are embracing “underconsumption” — the idea of using what you already have before buying more — the zero-waste kitchen has become one of the most searched sustainable lifestyle topics online.

To cut down on kitchen waste, plan your grocery shopping and meal preparation more intentionally, and seek creative ways to use leftovers. Store produce correctly to avoid food items going bad, and try to use them quickly (or freeze if possible). When you do have kitchen scraps, they can be easily composted to help fertilize your garden, where you can grow a little of your own produce for the ultimate locally sourced food. Composting is also one of the most beginner-friendly eco swaps out there, with many cities now offering curbside compost pickup alongside regular recycling.

Pro tip: Some kitchen scraps, like the skins, peels or cut-off ends of onions, carrots and other produce, can be used to make vegetable broth. Just simmer with water and your favorite seasonings for 1-2 hours, then strain through a sieve for a tasty broth that’s better than store bought!

4. Switch to reusable bags

Whenever you’re shopping for groceries or other items, use reusable bags (like those free tote bags collecting in your closets) to significantly reduce plastic pollution and minimize the need to cut down trees to make more paper bags. This is one of the simplest examples of the “buy less, use more” mindset that’s gaining traction across sustainable lifestyle communities on social media — small, consistent habits that add up to real change over time.

Pro tip: Keep a stash of reusable bags near the front door and in your car so you’ll always have some handy.

5. Choose low-waste cleaning products

You can minimize the environmental impact of plastic by opting for products that don’t come in single-use plastic containers. Compared to using conventional cleaning products, this can help lower your carbon footprint, while reducing both plastic pollution and water pollution. Easy swaps to look for include choosing natural sponges, reusable or compostable containers, concentrated formulas like soap blocks, tablets and laundry sheets, plus cleaners that come in refillable glass spray bottles. These swaps also tend to be more cost-effective in the long run — concentrated formulas and refillable options mean you’re buying less packaging and spending less per use, which matters when household budgets are stretched.

Pro tip: Prefer a certain cleaner that only comes in plastic spray bottles? Buy a large refill bottle so you can reuse that bottle as many times as possible.

Any one of these simple steps can make a big difference. And if climate news ever starts to feel paralyzing, remember: doing something — anything — is always better than doing nothing. Start with one until it becomes a habit, then try another. You’ll feel good knowing you’re doing your part to help protect the environment.

Beyond the bowl: Responsible sourcing matters for pets and the planet

2026-04-20T10:01:00

(BPT) – If you are a pet parent, you know how important nutrition is to the health, well-being and longevity of your four-legged loved ones. Just like when you are deciding what to eat, you want your dogs and cats to consume food packed with high-quality proteins and sustainably and ethically sourced ingredients.

Taking a closer look at what’s actually in your pet’s bowl can make a meaningful difference. Research shows that a whole-food, natural, high-meat diet supports overall vitality, including improved energy, digestion, skin and coat health. Avoiding unnecessary fillers will ensure your pet gets the nutrients and nutrition they need, just as nature intended.

Often, this is where pet parents’ research ends. However, it doesn’t matter what’s in your pet’s food if you don’t know where the food comes from. This means having full transparency into how ingredients are grown, the way animals are raised, and what happens to the ingredients at every stage. A farm-to-bowl approach ensures that what your pet is eating is not only good for them, but also good for others and the planet.

Raising the bar on transparent sourcing

Brands in the pet food industry are raising the bar by clearly outlining where their ingredients come from and how they are made. One company in particular, Natural Pet Food Group (NPFG), the New Zealand-based company behind the K9 Natural and Feline Natural brands, are focused on doing things differently by committing to only using high quality ingredients from vetted sources, earning them B Corporation Certification. In doing so, it became just one of three pet food companies in New Zealand to attain this certification.

Certified B Corporations go beyond typical industry practices to meet verified international standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency, achieved through a rigorous assessment across governance, workers, community, the environment and customers.

Rooted in New Zealand’s strong agricultural and seafood sectors, K9 Natural and Feline Natural’s whole-food ingredients are ethically sourced and traceable. By partnering with local farmers and fisheries that share a commitment to animal welfare, sustainability and ingredient integrity, the brand offers pet nutrition you can trust.

“Before we partner with new suppliers, we get into the details,” said Natural Pet Food Group CEO Brett Henshaw. “How animals are farmed, where fish comes from, how it’s caught, how suppliers look after their people. There’s real substance behind our sourcing, and this achievement reflects the strength of our long-standing partnerships with farmers and seafood suppliers across New Zealand and beyond.”

Almost all the ingredients that go into both K9 Natural and Feline Natural pet food products are sourced in New Zealand from grass-fed, free-range and pasture-raised animals, cage-free chicken, sustainable seafood and fertile soil-grown vegetables. No unnecessary ingredients, fillers or additives are used.

Doing good beyond the bowl — prioritizing environmental impact

A meaningful shift has been made by pet brands, including K9 Natural and Feline Natural, to reduce their environmental impact by prioritizing not only responsibly sourced ingredients but also improving packaging and production practices. As a newly B Corp Certified brand, K9 Natural and Feline Natural demonstrates the brand’s commitment to the environment’s health by:

  • Powering all its offices in New Zealand with 100% renewable energy
  • Prioritizing sea freight to reduce emissions
  • Increasing recycled content and removing unnecessary plastics in packaging
  • Donating 8,518 kilograms of pet food to 19 food hubs in the last year
  • Creating strong health and safety systems

“If we make food to help pets thrive, the way we run our business must support people, communities and the environment too,” said Henshaw. “Certification affirms the progress we’ve made and raises the bar for what great looks like in pet nutrition.”

Ensuring Lasting Smiles Act: Closing the Gap in Cleft Care Insurance Coverage

2026-04-17T08:51:00

(BPT) – A child is scheduled for cleft surgery. The family has arranged time off work, coordinated travel, and completed all pre-operative steps, then, just days before the procedure, an insurance denial arrives.

For many cleft-affected patients and their families in the United States, this is a common occurrence. Being born with a cleft lip and/or palate brings not only medical needs, but also the added burden of navigating complex insurance barriers to access essential care. While cleft care is widely recognized by medical professionals as necessary for a child’s health, coverage decisions don’t always reflect that reality.

Clefts affect 1 in 700 births and are not resolved with a single procedure. Treatment often involves multiple surgeries over time, along with speech therapy, dental and orthodontic treatment, and psychosocial support. When any part of that care is denied or delayed, it can directly affect a child’s ability to eat, speak, hear, and build confidence.

When “medically necessary” is up for debate

Cleft-affected patients and their families can frequently find themselves in difficult conversations with insurance providers over what treatments qualify for coverage. This is especially challenging when coverage decisions conflict with a doctor’s medical recommendations.

Delays and denials often stem from misconceptions in which procedures that restore essential functions, such as eating, breathing, and speaking, are incorrectly classified as cosmetic rather than medically necessary.

“Living with a bilateral cleft lip and palate has affected how I speak, breathe, eat, and hear, but the hardest part has been the constant fight with insurance over medically necessary surgeries,” said Toni-Elizabeth Wilkerson, a member of Smile Train‘s Cleft Community Advisory Council. “I’ve even had a procedure canceled just eight hours before I was due to go into the operating room, leaving me with physical, financial, and emotional burdens.”

Stories like this are not isolated. They reflect a broader pattern of coverage delays and denials faced by cleft-affected patients and their families nationwide.

A push for change

The Ensuring Lasting Smiles Act (H.R. 3277/S.1677) aims to close this gap by requiring private insurers to cover the full range of necessary treatments for congenital anomalies such as cleft lip and palate, so doctors, not insurance companies, can determine the care children need to grow, speak, and thrive. From April 21–23, Smile Train is mobilizing to build momentum for this critical legislation by contacting legislators and raising our collective voice. We encourage everyone to #TakeAction4ELSA by reaching out to your legislator via our advocacy tool and joining our campaign kick-off event.

Every child deserves the opportunity to grow, speak, and thrive without unnecessary barriers. By working together to close gaps in coverage, we can help make that a reality for families across the country.

5 smart ways Earth Month can inspire a more affordable spring style reset

2026-04-17T11:59:00

(BPT) – April is all about renewal. It is when many people open the windows, deep-clean their spaces and finally tackle their closets. It is also Earth Month, which makes it a natural time to rethink how you shop, what you keep and where your old clothes go next.

According to the EPA, over 11 million tons of clothing end up in U.S. landfills every year. But here’s the good news: A style refresh can be easier on your budget and the planet.

1. Think of resale as a smarter way to shop

Refreshing your wardrobe does not have to mean starting from scratch. Resale gives shoppers access to current styles at a fraction of traditional retail prices, making it easier to update a look without stretching a budget.

That matters even more in spring, when people are often shopping for warmer-weather outfits, special events and everyday staples all at once.

2. How to give clothes a second life

Earth Month is a reminder that small changes in daily habits can add up. Choosing resale is one of those changes. Buying secondhand and reselling unwanted items helps extend the life of clothing that still has value.

Instead of treating fashion as disposable, resale keeps items moving from one closet to the next. It is a simple way to make style feel more intentional.

3. Cash out your old closet to fund your new one

A lot of people have pieces they no longer wear but have not done anything with yet. Maybe the trend passed, maybe the fit changed or maybe the item just no longer feels like you.

Local resale destinations like Plato’s Closet can turn those pieces into immediate value. Customers bring in gently used, on-trend items and get cash on the spot for what the store buys. That makes it easier to refresh your wardrobe without paying for every piece out of pocket.

4. Find styles that feel more personal

For many teens and young adults, shopping resale feels less like a routine errand and more like a treasure hunt. Inventory is always changing, which means shoppers can discover unique pieces that help them build a look that feels like their own.

That sense of discovery is part of the appeal. Whether someone is trying a new trend or figuring out their signature style, resale offers more room to experiment.

5. Do it all in one trip

One of the biggest advantages of local resale at Plato’s Closet is convenience. You can clean out your closet, sell what you no longer want and shop for new pieces at the same stop.

That makes a spring reset feel manageable. Instead of creating separate to-do lists for decluttering, selling and shopping, you can take care of all three at once.

And resale goes far beyond clothing. Opportunities include stores like Play it Again Sports, Style Encore, Once Upon A Child and Music Go Round. Every year, these brands recirculate more than 195 million items, keeping inventory fresh and creating ongoing opportunities for shoppers to buy and sell.

This Earth Month, a closet cleanout can be more than a seasonal task. It can be a smart, sustainable way to refresh your style and earn cash at the same time.
